Top news leading into the conference championship games

Weighing in on the biggest news items surrounding the conference championship games Sunday — Tampa Bay at Green Bay and Buffalo at Kansas City.

Sunday is the second-to-last weekend of NFL football, and the date in which two teams will advance to Super Bowl LV (that’s Super Bowl 55 to you and me), scheduled for Feb. 7 in Tampa. The Green Bay Packers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 3:05 p.m. ET for the NFC championship, and the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills for the AFC championship at 6:40 p.m.

Our four respective team sites — Packers Wire, Bucs Wire, Chiefs Wire and Bills Wire — have you covered at a specific level, but here are the top news stories from these four teams leading into kickoff.

Detroit Lions Week 16 inactives: Frank Ragnow, Jamie Collins, Jayron Kearse OUT

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 16 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 16 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After elevating CB Tramaine Brock and C Evan Brown from the practice squad this week, their roster has increased to 55-players. On a traditional week, the Lions would need to reduce that roster down to 46-players, but because they kept eight offensive linemen on their active game-day roster, they are now eligible to expand their roster to 48-players, meaning they need to declare seven of their 55-players inactive.

Here are those seven players.

Lions inactives list

  • WR Kenny Golladay (hip) — Ruled OUT
  • RT Tyrell Crosby (ankle) — Ruled OUT
  • C Frank Ragnow (throat)
  • LB Jamie Collins (neck)
  • SAF Jayron Kearse (hip)
  • OG Logan Stenberg
  • DT Frank Herron

With Golladay out, the Lions have turned to Mohamad Sanu as their starting WR-X position with rookie Quintez Cephus getting in the mix as well. Expect the same today.

With Crosby out, the Lions will turn to Hal Vaitai — who has cleared the league’s concussion protocol — at right tackle. No Ragnow, means the Lions will start Joe Dahl at center once again, with Evan Brown as his backup. With eight offensive linemen active, Stenberg was not needed.

The Lions starting offensive line will likely be:

Left tackle Left guard Center Right guard Right tackle
Taylor Decker Jonah Jackson Joe Dahl Oday Aboushi Hal Vaitai

Missing defensive starters Collins and Kearse will hurt, and they will likely be replaced by Jahlani Tavai and Tracy Walker respectively.

No Frank Herron means the Lions will roll with just three interior defensive linemen, meaning they will likely lean on EDGE rushers Romeo Okwara, Everson Griffen, Austin Bryant, and Julian Okwara more on the defensive line.

Watch: Bears’ Kyle Fuller devastates Bucs’ Ke’Shawn Vaughn

Kyle Fuller delivered quite a shot on Bucs’ RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn in the second quarter.

The Chicago Bears’ Kyle Fuller proved there still can be hitting in football.

Check out how the DB uses perfect form to crush the Bucs’ Ke’Shawn Vaughn and jar the ball loose in the process.

First, officials threw a flag on the hit. They then huddled and decided the shot was clean.

There was a booth review on the play and that turned into the play being called a fumble that the Bears recovered, setting up a TD that sent them into the half with a 14-13 lead after falling behind 13-0.

2020 Lions schedule: Fan’s most anticipated game on the schedule

With the Detroit Lions schedule released, we gauged the #OnePride fanbase’s thoughts on which Lions game they are most eager to see.

With the Detroit Lions 2020 schedule released, it is not only a  time for everyone to make their season predictions but a time to circle our calendars for the most anticipated games.

We at Lions Wire gauged the #OnePride fanbase’s thoughts on which Lions game they are most eager to see.

Unfortunately for fans, they are going to have to wait until Week 16 before they can see the Lions play against the new faced Bucs at Ford Field.

With a new sheriff in Tampa Bay, it’s no surprise that the majority of fans what to see the matchup with Tom Brady at the helm. Also, with no primetime games on the Lions schedule and this being a potential flex game, this may be the closest fans get to a big stage game.

Looking solely at opponents, I was eager to see games against the Saints and Titans. The Saints sport an offense consisting of Drew Brees, Michael Thomas, and Alvin Karama, and would be a good test for the Lions’ new-look defense. This could make for exciting television.

The Titans and Lions run a similar style scheme — on offense and defense — and their balanced attack on offense with Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, Corey Davis, and A.J Brown makes it difficult for defenses to figure out. Along with their strong defensive front led by DaQuan Jones and Jeffery Simmons could make it a long day for the Lions’ offense. With the similar styles of play between the Lions and Titans, it could look like an 80’s style ground and pound football game.

The top game I have circled on my calendar is the Thanksgiving game against the Houston Texans. The last time the Lions played the Texans on Thanksgiving it was something most Lions fans want to forget. Due to a rule that shouldn’t have been there in the first place, the Lions lost in heart-breaking fashion. Outside of the turkey and pie, getting revenge on the Texans should be enough to get you excited on Thanksgiving.

The initial predictions have the Lions landing between six and eight wins, which would be quite an improvement from last years 3-12-1 finish, but would more than likely fall short of a playoff spot. It’ll be a tough road ahead playing against quality opponents with some elite quarterbacks and robust defenses, but it’s the NFL, and you never know what can happen.
