Micah Parsons’ words of wisdom for Penn State recruits

Micah Parsons says anyone from Pennsylvania would be crazy not to play for Penn State.

Former Penn State linebacker [autotag]Micah Parsons[/autotag] certainly had a stellar rookie season in the NFL. The first-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2021 NFL draft went on to run away with the NFL’s defensive rookie of the year award, and he gives plenty of credit for preparing him for NFL success to Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag].

As Penn State continues to make some key recruiting pushes this summer, Penn State shared some words of advice offered by Parsons for recruits to consider, specifically those from within the state.

“If you’re from Pennsylvania and you don’t go to Pen State, LBU, to play for Coach Franklin, you my friend are crazy,” Parsons said on the night he was drafted. “My dreams, my vision all came true under hard work and under Coach Franklin’s vision. So if I were you, I’d come here too.”

That quote from Franklin is now being used once again as a message on Penn State’s official Twitter account and the timing of the tweet is not insignificant.

Within the last couple of days, one of the state’s top defensive recruits, [autotag]Ta’Mere Robinson[/autotag], announced when he will be making his college decision official and which three schools are included in his top three. Penn State is expected to be the team to beat for the commitment by recruiting analysts and insiders as the Pittsburgh native has made numerous visits to Penn State during his recruiting process. Robinson is an edge rusher who can play linebacker, and Penn State is hoping that message from Parsons will resonate.

Robinson is the top defensive recruit in the Class of 2023 in Pennsylvania according to the 247Sports composite player rankings. Penn State has already secured the top recruit in the state with offensive tackle J’ven Williams and the second highest-ranked edge rusher in the state with Jameial Lyons from Philadelphia.

But two top 10 linebackers in the state (Josiah Trotter and James Heard) have been successfully recruited by West Virginia, and another top linebacker in the state is starting to take traction with Oklahoma (Phil Picciotti). So Penn State’s social video of Parsons may not necessarily be intended for Robinson, who many assume is in the bag for Penn State at this point. It may be intended for a few other recruits that are still going through the recruiting process or could potentially be flipped.

Jameial Lyons kicks off Penn State’s Blue-White weekend with commitment

Penn State kicks off Blue-White Game weekend with a four-star commitment from Jameial Lyons

Penn State is wrapping up spring football practices this weekend with the annual Blue-White Game in Beaver Stadium, but the weekend is already off to a nice start for head coach James Franklin and his staff. [autotag]Jameial Lyons[/autotag], a four-star edge rusher from Philadelphia, gave his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon.

Lyons has long been expected to be Penn State’s to lose on the recruiting trail. A four-star edge rusher according to his 247Sports recruiting profile, Lyons actually moved up his commitment date by a few months in order to commit to the Nittany Lions. Lyons previously wanted to make his announcement official in August, on his mother’s birthday, but the decision to move up the commitment date suggests there was little competition for Penn State to worry about.

Lyons chose Penn State over offers from West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Illinois, and Cincinnati (the other schools in his top five). But when it came to visits, Penn State hosted Lyons far more than the other candidates in the running, which is the big reason why recruiting insiders had been heavily leaning on Penn State for their official predictions for Lyons.

Lyons is the first defensive lineman to hop on board for Penn State’s Class of 2023. Much of the focus on Penn State’s current recruiting cycle has addressed the concerns on the offensive line. Of the nine commitments prior to Lyons, four were offensive linemen ([autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag], [autotag]J’ven Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Joshua Miller[/autotag], [autotag]Anthony Donkoh[/autotag]).

Penn State has picked up the verbal commitments of two of the top players in Pennsylvania, according to the 247Sports recruit rankings for the state. Williams is the top-rated recruit from the Keystone State, and Lyons is No. 13. Cornerback [autotag]Lamont Payne[/autotag] is the No. 10 recruit from Pennsylvania. There could be more success from within the state on the way at some point as well. Edge rusher [autotag]Ta’Mere Robinson[/autotag] (No. 3 overall in Pennsylvania) from Pittsburgh is widely projected to commit to Penn State, as is linebacker [autotag]Phil Picciotti[/autotag] of Perkasie (No. 8 in PA). At the moment, the only in-state recruit in the top 10 to get away from Penn State has been linebacker Josiah Trotter, who recently committed to West Virginia.

The commitment of Lyons is the first big headline from what is typically an important recruiting weekend for Penn State. Whether or not more commitments are on their way this weekend remains to be seen, but the spring game for any school is always used as a nice recruiting tool, and Franklin will hope to make a good sales pitch to any recruits in attendance this weekend.

Ohio State looking to add more to its 2023 class.

In what has been a slow start by Ohio State standards in the 2023 recruiting class, things are starting to pick up speed. Ta’Mere Robinson is a four-star prospect from Pittsburgh, Pa. Robinson is listed as the No. 8 linebacker in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings. The 6-4, 210-pound star could end up playing defensive end, linebacker, or safety at the next level depending on how he grows.

Robinson cut his list to ten teams which include Ohio State, as well as Cincinnati, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pitt, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia.

We’ll keep you posted as Robinson continues to cut his list and where the Buckeyes land in his recruitment.
