“Everything went according to plan, even when we were coming out to the cage. My coaches, Khabib (Nurmagomedov) and Javier Mendez, they said first round, try to stand up with him – see how it is. Move around, see what happens. Then we’ll let you know when it’s time to take him down. That’s kind of what happened.”

Ulanbekov on pressure

“(Friday) night is when all the pressure kinda came to a head and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m the one who’s entrusted to open this whole team’s week. I have to come out there and I have to win.'”

Ulanbekov on what he wants next

Alexandre Pantoja

“I really respect the champion. I think he’s a very hard fighter. I’ve been watching him for a long, long time and I really respect what he’s done. It’s just that he’s the champion and I want the championship belt, so I have to keep calling him out. But I don’t care if it’s (Alexandre) Pantoja at the end of the day or if it’s somebody else. My goal is the belt.”

Alex Perez vs. Tagir Ulanbekov back on for UFC Fight Night on June 15

It’s safe to say UFC flyweight Alex Perez is making up for lost time.

It’s safe to say [autotag]Alex Perez[/autotag] is making up for lost time.

Just days after knocking out Matheus Nicolau on short notice in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 55 headliner, Perez’s originally scheduled bout vs. [autotag]Tagir Ulanbekov[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night on June 15 has been rebooked. The event takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the booking confirmed the matchup to MMA Junkie following an initial report from Eurosport NL.

After just one fight in almost four years, Perez (25-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) will step into the octagon for the third time in 2024. The former title challenger lost a unanimous decision to unbeaten Muhammad Mokaev in March but made a less than two-month turnaround to replace Manel Kape against Nicolau this past Saturday. With the win over Nicolau, Perez snapped a three-fight losing skid.

Russia’s Ulanbekov (15-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is coming off back-to-back submissions over Nate Maness, and most recently Cody Durden at UFC 296 in December.

With the addition, the June 15 lineup includes:

  • Andrei Arlovski vs. Martin Buday
  • Ikram Aliskerov vs. Andre Muniz
  • Jimmy Flick vs. Nate Maness
  • Adam Fugitt vs. Josh Quinlan
  • Gabriella Fernandes vs. Carli Judice
  • Josefine Knutsson vs. Julia Polastri
  • Garrett Armfield vs. Brady Hiestand
  • Jeka Saragih vs. Westin Wilson
  • Asu Almabayev vs. Jose Johnson
  • Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. Miles Johns
  • Alex Perez vs. Tagir Ulanbekov

UFC 296 video: Tagir Ulanbekov taps Cody Durden with relentless submission attack

Tagir Ulanbekov tried, tried, and tried again – until he finally tapped out Cody Durden at UFC 296.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Tagir Ulanbekov[/autotag] tried, tried, and tried again – until he finally tapped out [autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag].

At UFC 296, Ulanbekov (14-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) put forth a relentless performance against Durden (16-4-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC), who he submitted with a rear-naked choke at 4:25 of Round 2. The flyweight bout took place at T-Mobile Arena as part of the event’s prelims.

The bout was full of scrambles, submission attempts, and near-sunk-in chokes. While Durden shut down many of Ulanbekov’s attempts, he didn’t shut down them all – and that’s what mattered.

After a lengthy along-the-fence battle with Ulanbekov on his back, Durden was dragged to the canvas during a rear-naked choke attempt. The tap came seconds later.

With the win, Ulanbekov, an Islam Makhachev training partner, has now won back-to-back fights. His only career loss was a unanimous decision dropped to Tim Elliott in March 2022.

With the loss, Durden has a four-fight winning streak snapped. The stretch of success turned his career around after a 1-2-1 start to his promotional tenure.
