Colts’ T.Y. Hilton trending in right direction to play vs. Saints

Could T.Y. Hilton make his return Monday night?

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is listed as questionable for Monday night’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints but it seems he’s trending in the right direction to suit up for the matchup.

Still dealing with a calf injury that has been lingering since Week 9, Hilton logged two limited practices this week but was a no show on Saturday. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Hilton is trending in the right direction to play.

The Colts are in a must-win situation. Should they lose Monday night, they would be officially knocked out of the playoff race. Hilton’s impact on the offense is well-known. The unit simply doesn’t run the same without its primary weapon.

The 30-year-old has been battling injuries throughout the season and has missed six games thus far. Even though it is a long shot for the Colts to make the playoffs, they are still technically in the race.

The Colts will release their inactives list an hour and a half before the game Monday night, which makes Hilton’s status certainly one to watch.

6 key matchups to watch for Saints vs. Colts

Battles between playmakers like New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and Indianapolis Colts FS Malik Hooker could define Monday Night Football.

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts entered the year with similar expectations: win the division, and then compete for Super Bowl LIV.

But things derailed quickly for Indianapolis, when franchise quarterback Andrew Luck abruptly retired before the season started, citing a series of years-long injuries that crushed his love of the game. More injuries struck at key positions, with star wideout T.Y. Hilton sidelined for weeks at a time. Now, the Colts are just looking to exit the regular season with grace and build some momentum going into next year.

But that doesn’t mean they’ll be a pushover. The Colts have enough impactful players at key positions to give the Saints trouble, especially if New Orleans underestimates them like they’ve done too often this year (their home loss to the Atlanta Falcons coming out of the bye week still stings). Here are six matchups where individual battles can make all the difference on “Monday Night Football.”

Colts WR Zach Pascal vs. Saints CB Eli Apple

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Apple started the year playing well, executing his responsibilities with penalty-free football. Then he ran into a buzzsaw in that first Falcons game, and still hasn’t really recovered. Whether Apple’s confidence has been shaken in recent weeks or if he’s simply been overmatched by better opponents can’t be said with any surety, but he has to win his matchup with Pascal on Monday.

Pascal has been the breakout star of the Colts this year, emerging out of nowhere to become the team’s big-play threat. He’s averaging 15.6 yards per reception and has snagged five touchdown passes, tying the team lead. While he’s a clear number-two option to Hilton (who Marshon Lattimore should be able to handle, with Hilton questionable to play after missing time with a calf injury), Apple is likely to draw this assignment, and he can’t afford to let Pascal get behind him in coverage.

Colts to play T.Y. Hilton only if he is fully healthy

T.Y. Hilton is doing what he can to get back on the field.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is listed as questionable with a calf injury for the Monday night matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

While there is a chance the veteran wide receiver makes his return after suffering a setback with the nagging calf injury, the only way he will be on the field for the primetime matchup is if he is 100% healthy.

Head coach Frank Reich said Saturday that he appreciates Hilton’s desire to play, but they want to be safe.

“We kind of been down this road before and he wasn’t there. I know it’s T.Y. (Hilton) but we just want to feel good about it,” Reich said to reporters. “We just want to do the right thing, make sure that he feels right and that we feel like he’s good.”

Hilton has done this before. In Week 4 against the Falcons, he tried to play through a groin injury and wound up re-aggravating it just before halftime. Though, he had already recorded 65 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an injury.

Then, Hilton suffered the calf injury in practice before the game against the Steelers in Week 9. He tried to come back just a few weeks later and suffered a setback again before the Titans game in Week 13.

The Colts will need all the help they can get with their season officially on the line Monday night. But, they are making sure he is fully healthy before risking re-injury.

“He’s a warrior. He’s got good work in this week. So I’m not saying that it’s out of the question at all,” Reich said. “I mean for the limited reps that he took, it was solid. It’s a Monday night game so we have a little bit of time. So maybe we can get there.”

Hilton hasn’t been able to get in a groove without dealing with an injury this season. If the calf doesn’t improve, his 2019 campaign could end early, especially if the Colts are eliminated with a loss on Monday night.

Regardless of his competitive desire to play through the pain, the Colts are going to make sure Hilton is perfectly healthy before running him back out there.

Behind Enemy Lines: 5 questions asked and answered with Colts Wire

The New Orleans Saints want to rebound on “Monday Night Football” against the Indianapolis Colts, but that could be easier said than done.

The New Orleans Saints are looking to rebound in a big way this week on “Monday Night Football” against the Indianapolis Colts, but that could be easier said than done. To get the best-informed takes on the Saints’ next opponent, we reached out to our friends at Colts Wire and shared a question-and-answer session with mangaing editor Kyle Hickey. Here’s what he had to say:

1. Andrew Luck’s retirement sent shockwaves around the league. How has Jacoby Brissett performed this year? Is he the long-term answer at quarterback for the Colts, or could they be a team that tries to sign Teddy Bridgewater in free agency?

KH: Brissett has handled an impossible situation with class and elegance. Replacing a franchise QB is never easy and has done so admirably off of the field. When it comes to his play on the field, it is difficult to say that he is the long-term answer. While he has the intelligence, arm talent and pocket mobility to be a successful starter in the league, there have been some concerns that show he isn’t ready to be a franchise guy. There are struggles with timing and anticipation throughout the season, and he’s been far too conservative when throwing. That’s great to keep his turnover totals down, but the offense has seen a dramatic drop off in explosive plays. They could be in the market for a quarterback this offseason, but it is much more likely they look to the draft his replacement.

2. Quenton Nelson is a superstar, which isn’t a word used to describe many guards. But how well do the Colts play up front as a group? The Saints defensive line is loaded with talent, even after losing two starting-quality players this week to injuries (Marcus Davenport and Sheldon Rankins).

KH: The offensive line is the best position group the Colts have. They’ve been mostly consistent this season in pass protection and run blocking. The left side of the line is elite with Anthony Castonzo and the aforementioned Nelson. Center Ryan Kelly is above average when healthy. The weakness is at right guard with Mark Glowinski, who has regressed incredibly while right tackle Braden Smith has been more good than bad. This unit is how the Colts win games, which means they will need to be near-perfect on Monday.

3. If T.Y. Hilton isn’t ready to return just yet from his calf injury, who should the Saints look to defend as the go-to receiving option when the Colts drop back to pass?

KH: Hilton is questionable for the matchup. If he can’t go, the top wide receiver in the room is Zach Pascal, who has enjoyed a semi-breakout in 2019. He’s a reliable possession receiver and is carving out a role in the offense. Wide receivers Marcus Johnson and Dontrelle Inman (just re-signed) will also be in the mix on Monday. Don’t be surprised if tight end Jack Doyle is targeted heavily as well.

4. Darius Leonard is one of the league’s fastest-rising talents at linebacker, just like a player the Saints faced last week in 49ers stud Fred Warner. What makes Leonard so special? Will he be up to the task of playing chess with Drew Brees?

KH: Leonard brings everything you want in today’s linebacker. He has incredible instincts, closing speed and is arguably the best tackling linebacker in the game. He’s nicknamed “The Maniac” for a reason. He will get a really tough task across from Brees, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Brees have a few plays that out-smart Leonard. That said, the All-Pro linebacker will also have his share of big plays whether they come from a blitz or punching a ball out of a receiver’s hands.

5. Finally, who’s winning this one? Will the Colts defense be able to slow down the Saints? What’s your final score prediction?KH: The Colts are in a really bad place having lost five of their last six. The Saints are rolling even after their exciting loss against the 49ers. I think the Saints take this one pretty easily, 31-20.

Drew Brees listed on Saints-Colts injury report, Jared Cook upgraded to full practice

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts updated their injury report, with Drew Brees and Jared Cook in on full practice participation.

The New Orleans Saints have had a rash of injuries recently, as evidenced by Thursday’s injury report. Ahead of their Week 15 clash with the Indianapolis Colts on “Monday Night Football,” the Saints had one of their longest injury reports of the season.

All eyes will be on the defense, with players such as defensive end Cameron Jordan (limited), safety Vonn Bell (did not participate), and linebacker A.J. Klein (limited) each managing injuries. The health of the offensive line is also a concern; left tackle Terron Armstead and backup guard Will clapp were limited, while left guard Andrus Peat is not practicing yet. Quarterback Drew Brees also appeared on the injury report after taking a hit in the final drive of the Week 14 game against the San Francisco 49ers. However, he was a full participant. Tight end Jared Cook was also upgraded to full practice participation while returning from last week’s concussion.

Indianapolis is not without their own injury woes. Star wideout T.Y. Hilton has dealt with a calf issue that has seen him miss time since Week 8 of the season. However, he could potentially return to the field against New Orleans in Week 15.

Here’s what we learned on Thursday’s injury report. Because the Saints are playing on Monday instead of the usual Sunday, this week’s injury reports will be issued on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday — so check back often for updates. The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts published their first injury report ahead of Week 14’s big kickoff on “Monday Night Football.” All eyes are on star Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, while the Saints have a long list of key players battling various ailments — ranging from tight end Jared Cook (concussion) and left tackle Terron Armstead (ankle) to starting linebackers Kiko Alonso (thigh) and A.J. Klein (knee). That’s hardly the position New Orleans would like to be in so close to the playoffs.

Here’s what we learned on Thursday’s injury report. Because the Saints are playing on Monday instead of the usual Sunday, this week’s injury reports will be issued on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday — so check back often for updates. Colts’ T.Y. Hilton believes he will play again this season

T.Y. Hilton hopes to return.

The Indianapolis Colts are fighting to keep their season alive with three games remaining and even though the odds are very slim, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is doing all he can to get back on the field.

Battling a lingering calf injury for the majority of the second half, there is concern that Hilton won’t be able to return. The 30-year-old, though, isn’t quitting on this team and is fighting to return with just three games left.

Hilton was adamant that he would never quit on the team even when the Colts are on the brink of officially being knocked out of the playoff race.

It has been a tough season for Hilton, to say the least. He’s dealt with a few injuries this season and has played in just seven games entering Week 15. His numbers are obviously down because of the limited playing time.

In those seven games, Hilton has recorded 35 receptions for 378 yards and five touchdowns with 10.8 yards per catch—which is a career-low.

The Colts could very well see their playoff hopes officially end on Monday night against the Saints, but Hilton is doing all he can to get back to his team.

Colts’ T.Y. Hilton (calf) still week to week

Ghost is still week to week.

The Indianapolis Colts offense has been without wide receiver T.Y. Hilton for the majority of the second half, and it is looking like it will continue that way for now.

The Colts get a long week given the Monday night matchup with the New Orleans Saints (10-3) in Week 15, but there wasn’t much reassurance that Hilton will be ready anytime soon.

Head coach Frank Reich joined the Indy media on a conference call on Monday and confirmed that Hilton is still week to week with the calf injury.

“No, we are still week-to-week with T.Y. (Hilton) at this point,” said Reich.

With just three games remaining and the Colts’ postseason hopes all but done, week to week means there’s a high chance Hilton doesn’t get back to the field at all in December.

At this time of year, any injury that might have a timetable of a month for recovery will send a player to the injured reserve list.

Hilton’s season has been marred by injuries. Maybe it’s a fluke thing. Maybe it’s because he’s 30 years old and the years of physical toll are finally breaking his body.

Regardless, it has been a rough season for the Ghost as he’s battled several ailments throughout the season. From a groin issue to this lingering calf injury, Hilton’s chances of returning this season are extremely slim.

Colts rule out 3 starters vs. Bucs in Week 14

T.Y. Hilton, two others ruled out on Friday.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich ruled out three players on Friday ahead of the Week 14 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including wide receiver T.Y. Hilton.

The other two players that Reich ruled out were cornerback Kenny Moore (ankle) and veteran kicker Adam Vinatieri (knee). Hilton and Vinatieri weren’t expected to play this week and while Moore didn’t practice all week, it still wasn’t clear if he would be ruled out.

He has, and now the Colts will be without three key players against a tough Bucs team that has won three of their last four games.

The Colts are looking at their playoff hopes dwindle even more as each day passes. The injuries have been nearly insurmountable and while they stayed competitive during the beginning of the season, it seems to have finally had enough of an impact to end their playoff hopes, especially with the team losing four of their last five games.

The Colts will release their injury designations later on Friday, which will give a better idea of the status of others entering the weekend. However, they will be without three key starters on Sunday.
