Jim Schwartz on T.J. Edwards ‘playing football well’ despite not being a workout warrior

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz says middle linebacker T.J. Edwards plays football very well

The Philadelphia Eagles are most responsible for the NFL Combine craze after the Birds traded up to select Mike Mamula in the 1995 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia was enamored with Mamula’s performance at the NFL Combine and traded with the Buccaneers to acquire the No. 7 pick. The Eagles chose Mamula over Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks among other notable names.

Sapp and Brooks went to become Hall of Famers, while Mamula ended up out of the NFL by the 2000 season after playing in 77 total games with the Eagles. Mamula finished his career with 206 tackles and 31 total sacks, but he’ll always be defined by the combine and a top-10 selection.

Fast forward some 25 years and workout warriors are all the rage, while guys who may not test well seem to slip through the crack. Eagles middle linebacker T.J. Ewards was a great player in the Big-10 at Wisconsin but ended up going undrafted despite having been athletic enough to play the quarterback position coming out of high school.

Edwards is now firmly entrenched as the Eagles starting middle linebacker and he has a huge fan in defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

During his Monday zoom meeting, Schwartz praised Edwards as a player, while explaining how his middle linebacker is more football player than workout warrior.

An All-American linebacker, Edwards went undrafted because of his lack of height and speed but has more than made up for it by becoming a rock in the middle for the Eagles defense.

[jwplayer ZU8Eypmg]

The Philadelphia Eagles survived a brutal offensive performance from quarterback Carson Wentz to hold off the Dallas Cowboys, 23-9 in front of a national television audience.

Here’s the snap count for Sunday night:

***
Quarterback: Carson Wentz 63 snaps, Jalen Hurts 3 snaps,

Wentz struggled again early on and if not for stout defense and a rookie quarterback playing for the opposition, things could have been a lot worse.

Offensive Line: Matt Pryor 63 snaps, Jordan Mailata 63 snaps, Jason Peters 63 snaps, Jason Kelce 63 snaps, Nate Herbig 63 snaps

The Eagles offensive line finished the game injury-free with aff five guys logging 63 snaps. Jordan Mailata at right tackle after giving up an initial sack to DeMarcus Lawrence early on, while Nate Herbig played well at right guard.

Running Back: Boston Scott 41 snaps, Corey Clement 20 snaps, Jason Huntley 2 snaps,

Scott had a career game, while Clement had 24 yards on five carries but lacks the explosiveness from the 2017 season.

Wide Receiver: Travis Fulgham 59 snaps, Greg Ward 59 snaps, Jalen Reagor 46 snaps, John Hightower 10 snaps, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside 5 snaps

Fulgham again was the best wideout on the field leading the Eagles in targets, catches, yards, and TDs. Reagor scored his first TD in his return and his contributions and snaps took away from John Hightower, who looked out of sorts. Arcega-Whiteside’s snaps continue to dwindle

Tight End: Dallas Goedert 53 snaps, Richard Rodgers 16 snaps, Jason Croom 1 snap

Goedert’s not 100% and didn’t get his first target until late in the first half.

Defensive Line: Fletcher Cox 74 snaps, Javon Hargrave 48 snaps, Brandon Graham 43 snaps, Derek Barnett 41 snaps, Josh Sweat 41 snaps, Vinny Curry 36 snaps, Malik Jackson 17 snaps, Raequan Williams 16 snaps

Fletcher Cox once again logged the most snaps, while the rest of the unit rotated and stayed fresh with the defensive ends all logging about 40 snaps apiece. Brandon Graham recorded another sack on his way to the goal of 10+ on the season.

Linebackers: T.J. Edwards 62 snaps, Alex Singleton 62 snaps, Duke Riley 55 snaps,

Jim Schwartz may have finally found his linebacker trio and T.J. Edwards was a star in his return leading the Eagles in tackles and blowing up Ben DiNucci on the play that put the game out of reach.

Defensive Backs: Rodney McLeod 79 snaps, Jalen Mills 79 snaps, Avonte Maddox 79 snaps, Nickell Robey-Coleman 35 snaps, Michael Jacquet 30 snaps, Darius Slay 28 snaps, Will Parks 28 snaps, Marcus Epps 16 snaps,

Slay left the game with an ankle injury, and the Eagles were able to hold up at the cornerback position. McLeod was the Eagles’ best defender on the backside and made a huge play on the game-ending fumble recovery.

The Eagles activated a 21-day practice window for four players including Jason Peters, Rudy Ford, T.J. Edwards, and Jalen Reagor.

The Eagles are set to get even more reinforcements back and a short time ago, the team announced that they have activated the 21-day practice windows for LB T.J. Edwards, S Rudy Ford, T Jason Peters, and WR Jalen Reagor.

Peters went on injured reserve with a foot injury just before the 49ers game. Jordan Mailata has started at left tackle in each of the past four contests.

Reagor suffered a thumb injury in the Week 2 Rams game and with DeSean Jackson likely to go on Injured Reserve with a lower-body injury, Reagor is returning at a perfect time. Reagor has five catches for 96 yards, including a 55-yard reception in Week 1.

T.J. Edwards suffered a hamstring injury in the win over the 49ers.

Philadelphia Eagles place LB T.J. Edwards and safety Rudy Ford on Reserve/Injured list

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they have placed linebacker T.J. Edwards on the reserve injured list

The Philadelphia Eagles made three roster moves on Thursday, first signing linebacker Dante Olson to the practice squad and then placing middle linebacker T.J. Edwards and safety Rudy Ford on the reserve/injured list.

Edwards and Ford both suffered hamstring injuries in the Eagles Week 4 win over the San Francisco 49ers and were forced to leave the game.

Linebacker Alex Singleton is likely to take Edwards’ spot in the lineup.

Philadelphia Eagles host LB Dante Olson for a visit & workout

The Philadelphia Eagles had undrafted free agent linebacker Dante Olson in for a visit after cutting him during training camp

With the Philadelphia Eagles dealing with injuries at significant positions and linebacker T.J. Edwards set to miss time with a hamstring injury, the Birds had a familiar face in for a workout at the NovaCare Complex.

Former Eagles undrafted free agent and Montana star linebacker Dante Olson was in town for a visit.

Olson was the 2019 Buck Buchanan Award winner, which is given to the most outstanding defensive player in the FCS. A tackling machine at Montana in the last two seasons.

Olson started 25 of 47 games at Montana and during his final season, he set the Big Sky Conference’s single-season record for tackles with 179 and made 26 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. In the game that put him on the map, Olson registered 14 tackles against Oregon.

A smart and instinctive ball-hawk, Olson plays in the mold of T.J. Edwards.

Eagles LB T.J. Edwards to miss some time with a hamstring injury

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards is expected to be out a few weeks with a hamstring injury

Alex Singleton earned himself some playing time with his performance on Sunday night and he’ll likely get it after Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced that Edwards and safety Rudy Ford would “miss some time” with hamstring injuries.

Pederson provided an update on right tackle Lane Johnson, stating that his ankle is “sore,” and that it takes time to loosen up and get warm.” Pederson made it clear that it’s something Johnson we’ll have to play through.

The Eagles injury woes continue and now they’ll be without safety Rudy Ford and middle linebacker T.J. Edwards for the rest of the game against the San Francisco 49ers, as both are dealing with hamstring injuries.

Eagles LB T.J. Edwards is questionable to return vs. the 49ers with a hamstring injury

T.J. Edwards is questionable to return vs. the 49ers with a hamstring injury

The Philadelphia Eagles injury woes continue and it looks like Jim Schwartz’s defense could be without middle linebacker T.J. Edwards for the remainder of the game.

Edwards leaves the game with four tackles and Duke Riley will take his place with the Eagles leading the 49ers 8-7 late in the second quarter.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers: 5 matchups to watch on defense

Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers: 5 matchups to watch on defense

The Eagles and 49ers are just moments away from kicking off their huge Sunday Night football debuts for the 2020 NFL season and with both teams dealing with massive injuries on both sides of the ball, here are five matchups to watch when the Niners have the ball:

***

1. Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz vs. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan

The Eagles defense played well in Week 3 against the Bengals after being shredded by the LA Rams a week prior.  Jim Schwartz will once again have hands full with an offensive guru in  Kyle Shanahan.

The 49ers offense is similar to what Sean McVay and the Rams like to run and with the Niners likely to utilize a ton of motion and presnap movement, Schwartz will need to put his players in good positions.

Nate Gerry says Eagles linebackers are looking to ‘flush it’ and move on after debacle against the Rams

Nate Gerry looking forward to the Bengals afer bad loss to the Rams

[jwplayer XGQeKGws]

The Philadelphia Eagles entered their Week 2 matchup against the Rams with the No. 1 rated defense in football. That honor quickly evaporated and 60 minutes later, the Eagles defense was a disaster during a 37-19 loss to the Rams.

The Eagles linebacker corps led by Nathan Gerry played below average in the afternoon, looking outmatched in the running game and beyond confused by the Rams short passing game. On Wednesday, Gerry took the blame for the Eagles brutal play against the run and used the phrase, “flush it” when talking to Les Bowen of The Inquirer, to describe where the Birds though process in advance of the matchup with Cincinnati.

“It’s easier for us to flush it knowing we still have the objectives and goals ahead of us that we still want to accomplish. … It’s just one of the bumps in the road. … I feel like we learned from it, and especially after today’s practice, I feel like we’ve definitely flushed it.”

The Eagles gave up 191 rushing yards on 39 carries and were gashed for big plays both on the ground and in the air as well.

Gerry called Sunday a bump in the road and something the Eagles will move on and learn from.
