List of Panthers 2023 free agents who remain unsigned

2023 Panthers free agents who remain unsigned

The Carolina Panthers re-signed two of their own free agents before closing out the month of May—offensive tackle Cameron Erving and guard Michael Jordan. But there remains a handful of the team’s players from the 2022 roster who are currently out on the open market.

Here are those seven free agents . . .

PFF compares draft prospects to current, former Colts

Plenty of 2023 prospects compare to current and former Colts.

The 2023 NFL draft is less than two weeks away, and the Indianapolis Colts are working to solidify their big board ahead of the offseason’s biggest weekend.

As the draft approaches, Pro Football Focus handed out their player comparisons for the top 150 players in this year’s class, based on their own rankings. There were plenty of prospects who are being compared to both current and former players of the horseshoe.

It should be noted that comparisons are far from a perfect science and are meant to give an idea about a prospect’s play style or dominating trait rather than a projection of a career path.

Here’s a quick look at the draft comparables related to the Colts in the 2023 NFL draft:

Panthers make additions to active roster, practice squad on Tuesday

With Baker Mayfield now gone, the Panthers had to make a few adjustments to their active roster and practice squad on Tuesday.

When the Carolina Panthers granted Baker Mayfield’s release on Monday, they—in turn—opened up a spot on their program. So, they patched that spot up today.

Cornerback T.J. Carrie has been signed to the active roster. This move comes three weeks after the ninth-year veteran was initially brought into the organization as a member of the practice squad on Nov. 15.

Carrie has appeared in two games for the Panthers thus far. He recorded six snaps on special teams in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens and 30 (15 defensive) in Week 12 against the Denver Broncos.

One of those 15 plays in that 23-10 win over Denver resulted in a forced fumble and subsequent recovery by the 32-year-old defender. Just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Carrie pulled and corralled the ball from Broncos returner Jalen Virgil—a takeaway that eventually led to a 36-yard field goal by kicker Eddy Piñeiro.

To fill Carrie’s spot on the practice squad, Carolina brought back quarterback Davis Cheek. The Elon University product was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Panthers this spring.

Panthers sign CB T.J. Carrie to practice squad

With their CB room wearing thin, the Panthers signed ninth-year veteran T.J. Carrie to their practice squad on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers got just what they needed on Tuesday . . . another player whose first name is a pair of initials that end with a “J.” Oh, and he’s also a cornerback—which is something they actually do need.

As first reported by Darin Gantt on Tuesday evening, the Panthers signed T.J. Carrie to their practice squad. The move comes one day after the team placed starter Donte Jackson, who sustained a torn Achilles tendon in last week’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, on injured reserve.

Carrie is now in his ninth-year as a pro. The Ohio University product first broke into the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2014.

He’d go on to spend his first four seasons there—amassing 205 combined tackles, three interceptions and three forced fumbles over 60 games. Carrie then moved on to play with the Cleveland Browns from 2018 to 2019 and then the Indianapolis Colts in 2020 and 2021.

To make room for his addition, Carolina released safety Kenny Robinson Jr.

Ravens officially make four roster moves on Wednesday

The Baltimore Ravens on Monday announced they signed veteran cornerback T.J. Carrie to their practice squad.

The Baltimore Ravens lost cornerback Kyle Fuller for the season during their Week 1 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh confirmed on Monday that Fuller suffered a torn ACL, effectively ending his season. However, the team has already made a move to add more depth at the cornerback position.

The Ravens on Wednesday announced that they signed veteran cornerback T.J. Carrie to the practice squad. Carrie was drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft, where he spent his first four professional seasons. Carrie would then play two seasons with the Cleveland Browns and another two years with the Indianapolis Colts.

A couple hours after the transaction was announced, Harbaugh spoke with the media. Harbaugh addressed the signing of Carrie and expressed excitement about the veteran joining the squad.

“Carrie will be on the practice squad. Heck of a corner. Been around. Played against him many times so we’re pleased to have him with us.”

During his first six seasons, Carrie has 386 combined tackles, nine fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles, and seven interceptions with one of them being returned for a touchdown in 118 games played. Carrie can be a great veteran addition to the 53-man roster should his services be needed.

In other roster moves, Harbaugh announced that the team signed linebacker Steven Means onto the 53-man roster after starting the season on the practice squad. Offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James and Fuller were both placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Ravens bring in veteran CB for workout on Tuesday

The Ravens brought in a veteran cornerback for a workout on Tuesday

The Baltimore Ravens have had bad injury luck over the past few seasons when it comes to the cornerback position. That trend unfortunately continued in Week 1 of the 2022 season, as they lost cornerback Kyle Fuller for the year with a torn ACL.

Baltimore built up cornerback depth over the course of the offseason, but general manager Eric DeCosta is always looking for ways to improve his roster. On Tuesday, the Ravens brought in veteran cornerback T.J. Carrie for a workout, who most recently played for the Indianapolis Colts, with stints also with the Cleveland Browns and the then-Oakland Raiders.

Carrie has played for eight NFL seasons, totaling 386 tackles, seven interceptions and six forced fumbles. With the loss of Fuller, Baltimore’s cornerback room becomes extremely young, so adding a veteran presence would add experience to the group.

Other veteran cornerbacks available includes Joe Haden, A.J. Bouye, Jimmy Smith and others.

Colts activate CB T.J. Carrie, elevate S Jaleel Addae

The Colts made roster moves ahead of the Week 10 matchup against the Jaguars.

The Indianapolis Colts activated cornerback T.J. Carrie from the injured reserve list, waived cornerback BoPete Keyes and elevated safety Jahleel Addae from the practice squad, the team announced Saturday.

With Carrie returning to the active roster, he’s likely to be on a pitch count coming off of a knee injury.

Addae comes up from the practice squad to add some depth at safety with both Khari Willis and Julian Blackmon on the injured reserve list.

Colts’ T.J. Carrie could be activated for Week 10

The Colts could activate CB T.J. Carrie for the Week 10 matchup against the Jaguars.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback T.J. Carrie could be activated from the injured reserve list for the Week 10 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Carrie has been on the injured reserve list since suffering a knee injury in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans and if he’s activated for the game against the Jaguars, it would likely include a pitch count.

“He’s in play. We’ll see how he responds. I think there’s a chance he could be up. I’m hopeful he’ll be up. He got through the last two days pretty good. To my eye, he did well today and we’ll just see how he responds tomorrow, but I’m optimistic that he would be up,” said head coach Frank Reich. “If he is, we might put him on some kind of a pitch count if he’s up.”

The Colts have some injuries in the secondary that will hinder the defense. They are without both of their starting safeties and cornerback Xavier Rhodes has been ruled out with a calf injury.

One of the questions that will surround Carrie is where he would play. He’s initially a cornerback but he saw reps at safety during training camp. Given the need the Colts have at both safety spots, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to rotate him in.

That said, Reich mentioned Carrie would most likely stick at cornerback.

“Yeah, he does have that versatility. For right now for us, he’s primarily corner first outside and he also plays nickel,” Reich said. “We can move him around depending on the combination we want on the field. We can play him inside, Kenny (Moore II) outside, Kenny inside, him outside and then emergency, he can play safety. He’s such a smart, savvy player. That gives us good versatility.”

Activating Carrie would be a nice addition of depth to the secondary so it will be interesting to see if any move is made to activate him.

Colts designate CB T.J. Carrie to return from IR

Colts designated CB T.J. Carrie to return from IR.

The Indianapolis Colts designated cornerback T.J. Carrie to return from the injured reserve list on Tuesday, per the league’s transaction wire.

With the Colts opening the window for return, Carrie is allowed to practice with the team while remaining on the reserve list. They have 21 days to activate him or else he stays on the reserve list for the rest of the season.

Carrie has been on the injured reserve list with a knee injury since being placed there following the Week 3 loss against the Tennessee Titans.

Carrie would be a sight for sore eyes when it comes to the secondary. Even though he’s listed as a cornerback, there’s a good chance he sees time at safety. He saw reps there during training camp and given the injuries to both Khari Willis and Julian Blackmon, he could be a helpful addition.

Though he’s eligible to return this week, it still remains to be seen if he will be able to suit up against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.

Colts place CB T.J. Carrie on IR among several roster moves

Colts made several roster moves, including placing CB T.J. Carrie on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts placed cornerback T.J. Carrie on the injured reserve list among a handful of roster moves, the team announced Wednesday.

The Colts also elevated cornerback Anthony Chesley from the practice squad to the active roster and signed safety Jordan Lucas to the practice squad. The team also signed tight end David Wells and safety Ibraheim Campbell to the practice squad on Tuesday.

The Colts saw the return of starter Xavier Rhodes in Week 3 but Rock Ya-Sin suffered an ankle injury during the fourth quarter so the secondary is a bit thin at the cornerback position.

With Carrie on the injured reserve list, he will be forced to miss the next three games and will be eligible to return in Week 7.
