Sy’veon Wilkerson finds new team after entering transfer portal

It didn’t take long for Sy’veon Wilkerson to find a new home

It didn’t take long for former Colorado football running back Sy’veon Wilkerson to find a new team in the transfer portal.

Only about two weeks after entering the portal on April 23, Wilkerson announced his commitment to the Sun Belt Conference’s Georgia State Panthers on Sunday.

Georgia State, which finished 7-6 last season with a win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, represents Wilkerson’s fourth college program. The 5-foot-9, 210-pound running back played two years at Deleware State and one at Jackson State before joining the Buffs for their 2023 campaign.

In 11 games played at Colorado, Wilkerson rushed for 191 yards on 53 carries. His three rushing touchdowns ranked second on the team behind quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ four.

Wilkerson entered the transfer portal the same day as fellow running back Dylan Edwards, who has since signed with the Kansas State Wildcats.

Transfer RBs Dallan Hayden (Ohio State) and Rashad Amos (Miami-Ohio) committed to Colorado last month.

Colorado running back Sy’veon Wilkerson responds to social media critic

Sy’veon Wilkerson defended himself against a social media critic

Social media oftentimes brings out the absolute best in people, and other times it brings out their worst. If you are a high-level athlete, you will always have those fans who are supportive, but you will also have those who never have anything positive to say.

That is where Colorado running back Sy’veon Wilkerson found himself this past weekend.

As Buffs fans eagerly want to see a consistent ground game, Wilkerson, a transfer from Jackson State, became the topic of conversation on X (formerly known as Twitter) this weekend. He quickly let the naysayers know that he isn’t in Boulder by accident and that he worked hard to get where he’s at now.

Wilkerson and the Buffs will look to get back in the win column on Saturday night as they host the Oregon State Beavers.

Trio of Buffs make Doak Walker Award watch list

The #cubuffs have a whopping three representatives on the Doak Walker Award watch list

The Doak Walker Award is given annually to the top running back in college football. The Colorado Buffaloes, with their new roster and a new head coach, have three running backs who landed on the preseason watchlist Wednesday.

The three players are Kavosiey Smoke, Sy’veon Wilkerson and Alton McCaskill IV.

It’s not often that the Buffs have even one running back make the list, so three in the same year is outstanding. Wilkerson followed head coach Deion Sanders from Jackson State and has a lot of familiarity with quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Smoke transferred from Kentucky and has an impressive highlight reel. But McCaskill might be the best of the bunch despite missing all of his final season in Houston due to injury. Early on, McCaskill is catching eyeballs at Buffs camp and there’s a path to him being the lead back.

This is terrific news for Coach Prime and offensive coordinator Sean Lewis, who have a logjam at running back. But, it’s better to have too much talent than not enough.

Colorado football 2023 state of the position: Running back

How do you see Colorado’s offensive backfield shaking out in 2023?

The Colorado Buffaloes’ passing offense is getting a lot of love heading into the 2023 season. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders earned rave reviews for his play during spring ball and the wave of talented wide receivers have been social media darlings during offseason workouts.

So, Colorado will be a pass-first team next season, right? As the great Lee Corso often says, not so fast, my friend! Offensive coordinator Sean Lewis mentioned his Badger blood as a way of reminding the country that the Buffaloes are going to run the ball early and often.

Below is a breakdown of what Colorado’s RB room looks like with fall camp just weeks away:

Sy’veon Wilkerson isn’t intimidated by the “healthy competition” forming in Colorado’s running back room

In my opinion, Colorado doesn’t have a definitive starter at running back.

Houston transfer Alton McCaskill may be the most talented, but it’s yet to be seen how he’ll bounce back from an ACL injury; Kavosiey Smoke, a Kentucky transfer, brings a veteran presence following his five SEC seasons; and Sy’veon Wilkerson rejoins head coach Deion Sanders after being Jackson State’s primary back last fall.

Oh, and don’t forget about sophomore Anthony Hankerson, walk-on standout Charlie Offerdahl and incoming freshman Dylan Edwards, who’s likely the fastest of the bunch.

Wilkerson recently spoke with BuffZone’s Brian Howell about the competition forming in Colorado’s offensive backfield:

“I feel like with this running back room, it’s gonna be healthy competition,” Wilkerson told BuffZone. “We’ve already kicked off the chemistry. We jell really well already. I feel like that’s gonna help us be like the best running back room in the Pac 12 – no matter who is starting, who is second, who is third.”

Jackson State transfer Sy’veon Wilkerson joins Colorado’s RB room

The #cubuffs added a “secret weapon” to their backfield

The Colorado Buffaloes have added another piece to their loaded running back room, this time in the form of former Jackson State Tiger Sy’veon Wilkerson. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound RB has two years of eligibility remaining.

It has been a whirlwind of an offseason for Wilkerson, as he originally entered the transfer portal after Deion Sanders left JSU for Colorado. He then announced he was staying at JSU but ultimately re-entered the portal on April 17.

All was quiet until Wilkerson was spotted in a summer conditioning video. Any doubt was then erased on Friday as Wilkerson met with Darius Sanders in a Reach The People YouTube video and confirmed he’s a Buffalo.

Brian Howell of BuffZone also confirmed Wilkerson’s arrival.

Last season, the power RB rumbled for 1,152 yards and nine touchdowns for the Tigers.
