Raiders send FB Alec Ingold to injured reserve, activate S Roderic Teamer from IR

Raiders send FB Alec Ingold to injured reserve, activate S Roderic Teamer from IR

It seemed a foregone conclusion that when Alec Ingold left the field last Sunday with a non-contact knee injury that he would be headed to injured reserve. Fears were that he had a torn ACL and that his season was over. Today the Raiders made that expected move, placing Ingold on IR.

To fill his role in the offense, the team added FB Sutton Smith to the practice squad. He was activated today as the team is set to face the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday.

Also getting activated today was safety Roderic Teamer who had was out the past three weeks. Teamer had been playing well enough to be the next man up at the safety spot and even play some cornerback. His return is a welcome one especially with the team sending safety Tyree Gillespie to injure reserve this week.

The cornerback position is also banged up with Keisean Nixon OUT and Brandon Facyson Questionable for the game.

Jets’ recent fullback tryouts could spell trouble for Trevon Wesco

Fullbacks Sutton Smith and Nick Bawden recently worked out for the Jets. Does that mean Gang Green could move on from Trevon Wesco?

Two fullbacks, Sutton Smith and Nick Bawden, worked out for the Jets on Wednesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Smith entered the league as a linebacker after being drafted by the Steelers. He has never played in a regular season game, but he did spend the preseason with the Saints after being signed as a fullback.

Bawden, meanwhile, has 10 games on his resume after being drafted by the Lions in the seventh round of the 2018 draft. All of those games came in 2019. Bawden caught four passes for 17 yards.

Neither player is flashy or experienced, but their tryouts with New York indicate that the team may not be satisfied with its current option at the position. That would be converted tight end Trevon Wesco.

The 2019 fourth-round pick spent the summer making the transition, as Mike LaFleur’s offense could use a fullback and Wesco had little chance of making the roster as a tight end. All indications were that the switch was going well, but Wesco played just 20 offensive snaps in Week 1 and saw that number cut to two this past week against New England. He has also played just 10 special teams snaps.

Now the 26-year-old’s roster spot is something to keep an eye on after a pair of workouts.

Saints sign defensive tackle after tryout, waive backup fullback

Saints sign DT Damion Square after tryout, waive FB Sutton Smith

A series of free agent tryouts this week have resulted in the New Orleans Saints signing some help. Friday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire saw New Orleans report a new addition to the depth chart in defensive tackle Damion Square, who spent his first six years in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Square, 32, weighs in at 6-foot-2 and 293 pounds. He was recently waived after spending training camp with the Cleveland Browns. He’s never been much of a pass rusher (bagging just 8 sacks in 1,196 pass-rush snaps, per Pro Football Focus) but could help solidify a position that’s running thin on experienced players with David Onyemata starting the year with a six-game suspension and Jalen Dalton landing on injured reserve.

Right now, the defensive tackles on New Orleans’ roster eligible to play in Week 1 are Square, Malcolm Roach, Shy Tuttle, Christian Ringo, Albert Huggins, R.J. McIntosh, and rookie Josiah Bronson. The team typically only keeps four or five, so at least three of that group will soon be waived and maybe revert to the practice squad.

The corresponding move was the release of fullback Sutton Smith, who was pushing veteran pickup Alex Armah Jr. for the starting job. Smith will test the waiver wire. He had been playing a high number of snaps on both offense and special teams while auditioning for the gig, but the Saints must have seen enough from Armah to call this battle off early. That marks the third preseason roster battle to be settled in as many days — punter Blake Gillikin won his job over rookie Nolan Cooney, while Jameis Winston was of course named the starting quarterback earlier Friday. The Saints’ Week 1 roster is beginning to take shape.

3 free agents sign with Saints in time for rookie minicamps

The New Orleans Saints brought in three free agents before their rookie minicamps, adding Albert Huggins, Easop Winston, and Sutton Smith.

The Saints veteran players have already said through the NFLPA that they won’t be attending voluntary workouts this offseason while the COVID-19 pandemic persists, but rookies and inexperienced pros hunting for roster spots are already setting their sights on New Orleans. The Saints still have jobs up for grabs, which these players can get an early leg up on during rookie minicamps from May 14 to May 16.

Here’s what you need to know about each new addition, which brings the total roster up to 81, with nine spots remaining before the Saints hit full capacity:

Seahawks sign 6 players to futures contracts for the 2020 season

The Seattle Seahawks announced the signing of six players who finished the season on the practice squad to reserve/future contracts.

The Seattle Seahawks dropped their divisional-round matchup to the Green Bay Packers to wrap up their 2019 campaign. With the season now in the books, the team is already looking ahead to next year, beginning to build the 90-man roster.

On Tuesday afternoon, Seattle announced the signing of six players to reserve/future contracts: cornerback Brian Allen, wide receivers Penny Hart and Cody Thompson, linebackers Sutton Smith and Pita Taumoepenu, and defensive end Shakir Soto.

All six players finished the season on the Seahawks’ practice squad.

Seattle Seahawks sign linebacker Dekoda Watson

The Seattle Seahawks brought back linebacker Dekoda Watson, who was signed for two days in October before the team claimed Josh Gordon.

The Seattle Seahawks signed veteran linebacker Dekoda Watson to the active roster, taking the place of suspended receiver Josh Gordon.

This is Watson’s second time being signed by the Seahawks this season. He originally signed on October 30, with the hope that he would help contribute on the special teams and on Seattle’s depleted pass rush unit.

“We’re gonna give him a chance to give us some rush on the edge,” coach Pete Carroll commented after the signing. “He’s been a really accomplished [special] teams guy too. We’re hoping he can give us some additional boost there. We’ll see.”

However, Watson’s first stint in Seattle only lasted a few days, as the team released him to make room for Gordon, who they won on waiver claims two days later.

Now he’s back, this time replacing Gordon, and he’ll once again have a chance to contribute off the edge and on special teams.

The nine-year veteran has primarily been a special teams contributor, but he does have six career sacks – including two in 2018 as a member of the 49ers.

The Seahawks also shuffled things around on the practice squad, cutting linebacker Jermaine Grace and replacing him with rookie linebacker Sutton Smith, who was a sixth round pick by Pittsburgh this year out of Northern Illinois.
