Giants sign LB Jermaine Grace to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed LB Jermaine Grace to their practice squad and released OL Tyler Haycraft.

The New York Giants made a series of transactions on Tuesday, including the addition of running back Devonta Freeman and the placement of running back Saquon Barkley on injured reserve.

They also made a few practice squad moves, which saw safety Sean Chandler demoted from the active roster and defensive back Ryan Lewis signed to the 53-man roster.

To round things out, the Giants also released offensive lineman Tyler Haycraft from the practice squad and signed veteran linebacker Jermaine Grace to the unit.

The 6-foot-1, 223-pound Grace originally signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a rookie free agent following the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks.

Other than the Browns, he’d had at least two stints with each of those teams.

In 24 career games, Grace has recorded nine tackles (one for a loss).

Browns waive 4 players to get to 80-man limit

Jermaine Grace is the most notable of the 4 players released

The Cleveland Browns made some moves at the bottom of the roster on Friday. The team parted ways with four players to get to the 80-man roster limit for the start of training camp.

The four players:

  • WR Tony Brown
  • LB Jermaine Grace
  • DE George Obinna
  • DT Justin Zimmer

Zimmer was waived with a non-football injury designation.

Brown and Obinna are undrafted rookies who were hoping to make a quick impression. Grace spent the last couple weeks of the 2019 season on Browns practice squad. He has two separate stints with Cleveland as well as stops in Atlanta, Indianapolis and Seattle since 2017. He was part of the team’s considerable Miami Hurricanes contingency under the prior regime.

The Browns are now at 80 players on the active roster after the moves and the COVID-19 reserve and opt-out lists are factored in.

Seattle Seahawks sign linebacker Dekoda Watson

The Seattle Seahawks brought back linebacker Dekoda Watson, who was signed for two days in October before the team claimed Josh Gordon.

The Seattle Seahawks signed veteran linebacker Dekoda Watson to the active roster, taking the place of suspended receiver Josh Gordon.

This is Watson’s second time being signed by the Seahawks this season. He originally signed on October 30, with the hope that he would help contribute on the special teams and on Seattle’s depleted pass rush unit.

“We’re gonna give him a chance to give us some rush on the edge,” coach Pete Carroll commented after the signing. “He’s been a really accomplished [special] teams guy too. We’re hoping he can give us some additional boost there. We’ll see.”

However, Watson’s first stint in Seattle only lasted a few days, as the team released him to make room for Gordon, who they won on waiver claims two days later.

Now he’s back, this time replacing Gordon, and he’ll once again have a chance to contribute off the edge and on special teams.

The nine-year veteran has primarily been a special teams contributor, but he does have six career sacks – including two in 2018 as a member of the 49ers.

The Seahawks also shuffled things around on the practice squad, cutting linebacker Jermaine Grace and replacing him with rookie linebacker Sutton Smith, who was a sixth round pick by Pittsburgh this year out of Northern Illinois.
