The chalk: Dallas Cowboys

Who they play: Home vs. Houston Texans – 1 p.m. (FOX)

Dallas is a 16-point favorite. While I don’t expect the Cowboys to cover this is spread, it doesn’t matter when making a survivor pick. All I care about is a victory, which should be easy for Dallas on Sunday.

QB Dak Prescott has not been playing great football. Even in a 54-19 blowout of the Colts last week, Prescott only managed 170 yards passing. But the run game and defense are what will carry Dallas in this game.

RBs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard have come on strong as of late and the defense led by LB Micah Parsons has been dominant.

Houston is not just limping to the end. It’s outright stumping for the No. 1 overall pick, which the Texans can all but secure with a loss here. RB Dameon Pierce has had a wonderful rookie season. But the rest of the team has done nothing to help him or coach Lovie Smith. After being benched, QB Davis Mills is back as the starter after Kyle Allen struggled.

There is not much to say about this game other then take Dallas in your survivor pool. Dallas is by far my favorite play this week.

Off the board: Buffalo Bills

Who they play: Home vs. New York Jets – 1 p.m. (CBS)

The Jets beat the Bills 20-17 in their last meeting. That game was not only at home, but it was also against an injured QB Josh Allen, who was having trouble throwing.

Since then, the Bills and Allen have gotten healthy. They have also regained the No. 1 seed in the AFC. This will become extremely important in the playoffs and Buffalo does not want to lose this.

The Jets are better then many expected them to be this season. With 7 wins entering this game, New York is currently in the playoffs as the final team. QB Mike White has given this team life. But this game comes in a difficult spot for the Jets.

The Bills are final returning home after a snowstorm forced their last home game to be relocated to Detroit. The Bills will be excited and so will the fans. The energy will be immense in Buffalo, and this leads me to loving the Bills in this spot. Look for the Bills to roll in this divisional game.

Want to win your survivor pool? Who to take in Week 13

Breaking down the best strategies of how to win your NFL survivor pool as the season continues into Week 13.

We’re 12 weeks into the season and if you’re fortunate enough, you’re still alive in your NFL survivor pool.

As mentioned in the 1st survivor column of the season, these things are not easy.

We opened with back-to-back victories using the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos, but lost in Week 3 when the Los Angeles Chargers were upset at home by Jacksonville Jaguars 38-10. So much for the Chargers being 6.5-point favorites.

While the loss would have eliminated us from a survivor pool, our goal was to help you in picking winners. Plus, some survivor pools allow for 2 or 3 losses before elimination.

We bounced back with wins in Week 4 (Green Bay Packers) and Week 5 (Buffalo Bills), but then lost when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dropped a 20-18 stunner at the Pittsburgh Steelers as 10-point favorites in Week 6.

We’ve gone 4-2 since but currently are on a 3-game win streak. Hopefully, we can lead you in the right direction for a few more weeks and help you win bragging rights … and possibly some money.

The chalk: Seattle Seahawks

Who they play: At Los Angeles Rams – 4:05 p.m. (FOX)

Seattle is coming off a 40-34 loss in overtime to the Las Vegas Raiders last Sunday. An 86-yard TD by Raiders RB Josh Jacobs will do that. So will allowing 229 rushing yards to Jacobs.

Luckily, the Rams have no such running back. At this point, they actually don’t have much of anyone left.

With WRs Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson out, Los Angeles is counting on WRs Van Jefferson and Ben Skowronek. Plus, QB Matthew Stafford still has not cleared the concussion process and DE Aaron Donald has been ruled out for this Seattle game.

Los Angeles has nothing and is pretty much done for the season.

Seattle, on the other hand, still has a lot to play for. The Seahawks (6-5) are only 1 game behind the NFC-West leading San Francisco 49ers (7-4) and have a legitimate shot at a playoff berth. Heading into Week 13, they’re on the outside looking in, but they’re only ½ game out.

Seattle needs wins and this is one of its easiest games in which to get one.

With QB Geno Smith and WRs Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, the pass game is in great shape to take advantage of the Rams’ struggling secondary, including CB Jalen Ramsey, who has just 1 interception on the season — back in Week 2.

Seahawks rookie RB Kenneth Walker III (613 rushing yards with 9 TDs) is Tipico Sportsbook’s current favorite (-180) for Offensive Rookie of the Year. With Donald missing, Walker should have a field day against the Rams line.

This game shouldn’t be close — the Seahawks are 7.5-point favorites — and therefore SEATTLE is my FAVORITE SURVIVOR PICK for Week 13.

Off the board: Dallas Cowboys

Who they play: Home vs. Indianapolis Colts – 8:20 p.m. (NBC)

While Indy QB Matt Ryan (22 of 34 for 199 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and RB Jonathan Taylor (86 rushing yards, 1 TD) looked OK Monday night in a 24-17 home loss to the Steelers. the rest of the team needs help.

The defense still has DL DeForest Buckner on the line, which will help against Dallas RBs and Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott in the run game. But without LB Shaquille Leonard (season-ending surgery), the pass defense will not be as effective, which will allow Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb and TE Dalton Schultz to run free and make plays for QB Dak Prescott.

On defense, I expect the Cowboys to give up yards to Taylor. This has been the weak part of the Dallas defense all season. But the pass rush with stud LB Micah Parsons will sack Ryan several times. Being pressured constantly, Ryan will not have enough time to find WRs Michael Pittman Jr, Parris Campbell and Alec Pierce.

This will force the Colts to be one dimensional. Taylor will run for more than 100 yards, but Dallas will do far more on offense and win this game after an extended rest since it last played Thanksgiving Day.

If you can’t take Seattle, TAKE DALLAS as your Week 13 survivor pick.

The chalk: Buffalo Bills

Who they play: At Detroit Lions, Thursday 12:30 p.m. (CBS)

I’m not a fan of using a team playing Thanksgiving Day, but the Bills come into this game after beating the Cleveland Browns 31-23 last week in this same stadium.

Buffalo was supposed to host Cleveland in Week 11, but the game was moved to Ford Field due to the snowstorm that dumped on Western New York.

QB Josh Allen (197 passing yards, 1 TD, 0 INT) avoided the interception bug in the win. He had 6 in his previous 3 games, including 2 in the Bills’ Week 10 overtime home loss to the Minnesota Vikings 33-30.

The Bills need to win Thursday to remain on pace with the Miami Dolphins in the AFC East — they’re both 7-3 — and to keep their hopes alive in the race for conference’s No. 1 seed. The Kansas City Chiefs are 8-2, while the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans are both 7-3.

Detroit looked good in a 31-18 road victory at the New York Giants last week. Well, RB Jamaal Williams looked good with his 3 rushing TDs. The rest of the team still needs help and the defense, which held up against the Giants, have another tough test this week.

The Lions were able to contain Giants RB Saquon Barkley, holding him to 22 rushing yards on 15 carries and 13 receiving yards on 2 catches. Now Detroit will have to deal with Buffalo’s RB duo of Devin Singletary and James Cook, while Allen is a huge running threat, too.

With Allen and WR Stefon Diggs leading the way, the Buffalo offense will put up points on a fast track in Detroit. BUFFALO is my FAVORITE SURVIVOR PLAY for Week 12.

Off the board: Miami Dolphins

Who they play: Home vs. Houston Texans, 1 p.m. (CBS)

Miami has been one of the surprise teams this season. QB Tua Tagovailoa and WR Tyreek Hill have found a connection. This has only amplified the effect WR Jaylen Waddle has had opposite Hill. Following his rookie season with 104 catches for 1,015 yards and 6 TDs, Waddle has fit into the WR 2 role perfectly behind Hill.

Miami is coming off its bye week to take on the Texans, the team with the worst record in the NFL at 1-8-1. Coach Lovie Smith has been noncommittal on QB Davis Mills keeping the starting job. If Mills struggles vs. the Dolphins, there could be a quick change to backup QB Kyle Allen, who started 17 games for the Carolina Panthers between 2018-20.

Whether Mills remains the starter or the Texans turn to Allen, the Dolphins should not have any trouble shutting down the Houston offense, which has averaged just 13.3 points per game over the last 4 games.

The Philadelphia Eagles (8-1) finally lost, the Seattle Seahawks (6-4) came crashing down to Earth, and the Buffalo Bills (6-3) took another loss as well. Hopefully, you did not have those teams in your NFL survivor pool for Week 10.

The Eagles dropped their 1st game of the season, falling 32-21 as 11-point home favorites to the Washington Commanders (5-5) Monday night. The Seahawks had a 4-game win streak snapped in 21-16 defeat as 2.5-point road underdogs at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-5), and the Bills lost as 6.5-point favorites in what some are calling the “game of the year” in a 33-30 overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings (8-1).

Those games are now in the past, so let’s focus on the future to Week 11.

The chalk: Philadelphia Eagles

Who they play: At Indianapolis Colts, 1 p.m. (CBS)

Although Monday’s home loss to the Commanders was not the result the Eagles or their fans wanted, it could serve to make the team more focused moving forward. No longer do they have to hear about being undefeated. Now, it’s all about the next game and their next opponent.

Despite upsetting the Las Vegas Raiders 25-20 as 4.5-point road underdogs in Week 10, the Colts (4-5-1) are still not in a wonderful spot. New coach Jeff Saturday had the Colts amped in his 1st game Sunday, but the Eagles are not the Raiders.

After coming into Monday night’s game with a +18 turnover margin and only having 3 turnovers all season, Philadelphia had 3 turnovers in the loss. This was the main reason the team failed to improve to 9-0 … bad officiating aside. Philadelphia will bounce back at Indy. CB Darius Slay and FS C.J. Gardner-Johnson will shut down Indianapolis’ wide receivers, while Colts RB Jonathan Taylor, who after getting back on track with 147 yards against the Raiders — his 1st 100-yard game since Week 1 — will find running far more difficult against the Philadelphia front.

The Eagles area good team, and I’m not yet willing to say the Colts are back with their new coach. Therefore, the EAGLES are my FAVORITE SURVIVOR PLAY in Week 11.

FOOTBALL NEVER STOPS

Off the board: Baltimore Ravens

Who they play: Home vs. Carolina Panthers, 1 p.m. (FOX)

The Ravens (6-3) are coming off their bye week following a 27-13 victory as 1-point road favorites at the New Orleans Saints. Despite losing 3 games, the Ravens have held double-digit leads in every game this season. They should be able to continue that streak against the Panthers (3-7), one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Carolina QB P.J. Walker has been ruled out for Sunday’s game after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 10’s surprising 25-15 home win vs. the Atlanta Falcons. QB Baker Mayfield will start, which we’ve seen before and it didn’t turn out well for Carolina.

RB Christian McCaffrey is gone — traded to San Francisco — and, unfortunately for the Panthers, WR D.J. Moore can’t throw the ball to himself.

With the Ravens getting healthy in the bye week, the defense will get after Mayfield and force him into bad decisions. The Ravens, at home, will win another game they lead by double-digits. Only this time, they will win by double-digits as well.

Carolina Panthers? OK, this one was not a surprise.

The chalk: Kansas City Chiefs

Who they play: Home vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, 1 p.m. (CBS)

It is getting increasingly difficult to find teams to trust. The Chiefs at home, although normally gold, has been shaky this season.

If not for 2 last-minute comebacks — against the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans — the Chiefs would have 2 more losses at home where they’re 3-1.

Fortunately for us, the Jaguars come to town this week. They’re playing better, for sure, but at 3-6, Jacksonville brings less of a challenge than other top teams have to face in Week 10.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes threw a career-high 68 times in Sunday’s 20-17 overtime home victory vs. the Titans. He will not need to do so this week vs. the Jaguars … but it’s nice to know he can if needed.

With Mahomes throwing so many attempts, you would think the Chiefs would have scored more than 20 points. They will this week vs. the Jaguars, which is why KANSAS CITY is my FAVORITE NFL SURVIVOR POOL PICK for Week 10.

Off the board: Miami Dolphins

Who they play: Home vs. Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m. (CBS)

The Dolphins are doing well. QB Tua Tagovailoa has been stellar since returning from his concussion and WR Tyreek Hill has been outstanding all season.

With 4 games of 150 receiving yards already, Hill has more than made up for his trade cost this offseason. His presence has lifted Miami to new heights, and he has taken Tagovailoa and WR Jaylen Waddle with him on the journey.

The Browns come into Miami off a bye week. This allowed RBs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt to get fresh, which could be worrisome for Miami. The Dolphins defense, which has improved with the addition of DE Bradley Chubb is good enought to mitigate the effect Chubb and Hunt will have on this game.

Miami is on a 3-game win streak, recently defeating the Chicago Bears 35-32 at Soldier Field last week and the Detroit Lions 31-27 at Ford Field Oct. 30. After a 2-week road trip, Miami returns home, where it will find a friendly atmosphere.

The Dolphins lie only 1 game behind the Bills (6-2) in the AFC East. If Buffalo QB Josh Allen is unable to go, Miami will want to take advantage of the Bills missing him by getting a win while the Bills hopefully lose to the Minnesota Vikings.

However, the Dolphins can only take care of their part of the deal by winning this game. I think they will.

The chalk: Buffalo Bills

Who they play: At New York Jets – 1 p.m. (CBS)

Was there really any other choice here? The Bills (6-1) and the Eagles (7-0) are the 2 best teams in the NFL right now. Both teams are playing on the road in Week 9, but only 1 is playing on Sunday.

QB Josh Allen and WR Stefon Diggs are making magic right now and although many will pooh-pooh the addition of RB Nyheim Hines as nothing, he adds a real element out of the backfield.

The Bills drafted RB James Cook hoping he would be a pass catching back and take some pressure off Allen. He has done alright, but Hines has done it since his rookie season in 2018. He will fit right into this offense and will truly take pressure off Allen.

The Jets (5-3) come in after a loss 22-17 loss to the Patriots in Week 8. QB Zach Wilson has not progressed and with WR Elijah Moore disgruntled and WR Corey Davis ailing, the pass game is in shambles. This is a bad spot for the Jets. With the Bills favored by 12.5 points, they are my FAVORITE SURVIVOR PLAY this week.

Off the board: Philadelphia Eagles

Who they play: At Houston Texans – Thursday, 8:15 p.m. (Prime Video)

Normally, I would not have a Thursday night game in this spot. Thursday games are weird and anything can and usually does happen. But the Eagles are far superior to the Texans (1-5-1), and even if something funny does happen, I do not see Philadelphia losing.

The Eagles are coming off a demolition of the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-13 in Week 8. WR A.J. Brown had 6 catches for 156 yards and 3 TDs. The Eagles were able to sit their starters for most of the 4th quarter, so they’ll be rested coming into this game.

The Texans have RB Dameon Pierce and nothing else on offense. The Eagles run defense with DL Fletcher Cox and company should dismantle the Houston offensive line much like it did against Pittsburgh. If this game were not on a Thursday, it would be my favorite play this week, but since it is, it finishes a close second to the Bills.

The chalk: Buffalo Bills

Who they play: vs. Green Bay Packers, 8:20 p.m. (NBC)

I love QB Aaron Rodgers as a football player. I never thought I would be picking against him in a survivor pool. Yet here we are.

The Packers have been terrible this season. RB Aaron Jones and Rodgers have done their part. But the lack of receiving weapons has shown itself to be too much to overcome. Coming into Buffalo, the Packers are on a 3-game losing streak. This is a bad spot for Green Bay to try to get back on track.

Not only are the Bills coming off a bye week. They will also have CB Tre’Davious White back for this game. Just another talented player in the secondary for Green Bay to try and overcome.

The Packers have only been underdogs by more than a TD 7 times with Rodgers at QB. In those 7 games, the Packers are 0-7 straight up and 0-7 ATS. When Las Vegas thinks the Packers are going to be blown out, they are. And I expect the same here.

The Bills over the Packers is my favorite survivor play in Week 8.

Off the board: Cincinnati Bengals

Who they play: at Cleveland Browns, Monday 8:15 p.m. (ESPN)

The Browns have been on a downward spiral in recent weeks. Starting with a loss to the Atlanta Falcons and continuing last week with a divisional 23-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The defense, which was thought to be a strength, has taken a step down and with Jacoby Brissett at QB the offense is struggling outside of RB Nick Chubb.

After a hard-fought 30-26 victory over the New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati returned home and blasted the Falcons 35-17 on Sunday. RB Joe Mixon had a TD and the connection of QB Joe Burrow to WR Ja’Marr Chase accounted for 2 more in the victory.

Despite losing Chase for a few weeks with a hip injury, the Bengals finally have things rolling and they will continue the roll with a victory over the Browns Monday night.

The chalk: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Who they play: at Carolina Panthers, 1 p.m.

It is tough going back to the well with the Buccaneers. But if you stayed away from them last week, they are a great play this week against the crumbling Panthers.

Not only does Carolina have a new coach, but it also has a lack of depth at receiver with Robbie Anderson traded to the Arizona Cardinals.

With the defense of Tampa Bay able to clamp down, it will be up to QB Tom Brady and the offense to gain the victory over the 1-5 Panthers.

Tampa Bay comes in off a 20-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers led by QB Mitch Trubisky. Whether it’ll be P.J. Walker, Sam Darnold or Jacob Eason at QB for the Panthers, they are not as good as Trubisky and do not have the chemistry with the receivers the way Brady does with his team. The Buccaneers are my FAVORITE SURVIVOR PLAY in Week 7.

Off the board: Cincinnati Bengals

Who they play: vs. Atlanta Falcons, 1 p.m.

This game might be a bit difficult to swallow. The Bengals are coming off barely beating the Saints 30-26, while the Falcons are coming off a 28-14 win over the 49ers.

Atlanta is 6-0 this season (ATS). The Falcons always keep things close win or lose. So, don’t expect a blowout by Cincinnati. This means you will be sweating it down to the final bell.

This game is going to be played outdoors at Paul Brown Stadium. As an indoor team, the Falcons will need to adjust to the conditions, while the Bengals will be used to it.

With Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow finally re-igniting his connection with WR Ja’Marr Chase last week, facing the Falcons secondary is just the gift the duo needs as a follow-up.

The Falcons are better than many expected they would be coming into the season. QB Marcus Mariota has led them to a 3-3 record and relevance in the NFC South. Cincinnati is starting to gain steam as the season goes forward. I expect the Bengals train to run through the Falcons in this game.

Want to win your survivor pool? Who to take in Week 6

Breaking down the best strategies of how to win your NFL survivor pool as the season continues into Week 6.

Congratulations. You have made it through a rough season and to Week 6 of your NFL survivor pool. As the weeks go on, it becomes tougher and tougher to find a solid play. Did you use the Green Bay Packers against the New England Patriots? Or do you still have them coming home against the New York Jets this week. It is decisions like this which have some people winning and some losing when the results are tallied.

The chalk: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Who they play: at Pittsburgh Steelers, 1 p.m.

If this game were in Tampa Bay, it would be a must play. Being that it’s in Pittsburgh, it’s just the best play.

Even in a down season so far, the 3-2 Buccaneers are far better than the 1-4 Steelers. Tom Brady, along with WRs Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and RB Leonard Fournette provide an arsenal of weapons unmatched by Pittsburgh. Even having to pull out a clunky 21-15 victory over Atlanta last Sunday, Tampa Bay has the offense and the defense to shut down the struggling Steelers.

Pittsburgh’s only victory this season was a 23-20 overtime upset in Week 1 of the Cincinnati Bengals, in a game in which the Steelers were outgained by more than 200 yards on offense. They only won that game due to an injured long snapper for the Bengals leading to some late game FG mishaps. This game will not be close enough for those mishaps to happen here.

Tampa Bay is my favorite play this week for survivor pools.

Off the board: Los Angeles Rams

Who they play: vs. Carolina Panthers, 4 p.m.

The Los Angeles Rams are having a tough start as defending champions. WR Allen Robinson has been invisible, and RB Cam Akers has been non-existent. But the team still has WR Cooper Kupp on offense.

Even in the Rams 22-10 loss to Dallas last Sunday, Kupp still produced having a 75-yard TD reception from QB Matthew Stafford. After a slow start to the season, CB Jalen Ramsey also shined. He was able to shadow CeeDee Lamb and held the Cowboys WR to 1 catch for 9 yards during his time in coverage.

With QBs Baker Mayfield out and Sam Darnold still not ready, the Panthers will turn to Temple product P.J. Walker this week. On top of the QB change, the team also fired coach Matt Rhule after 2 seasons of disappointment from the college prodigy with Steve Wilks taking over. The Panthers will not make a run at the Rams, making Los Angeles is another wonderful bet this week for your NFL survivor pool.

Want to win your survivor pool? Who to take in Week 5

Breaking down the best strategies of how to win your NFL survivor pool, starting with who to pick in Week 5.

Some of you have been tossed out of NFL Survivor Pools with all the unforeseen outcomes of early season games. Whether it was the Baltimore Ravens‘ brutal loss to the Miami Dolphins or the Los Angeles Chargers laying an egg against the Jacksonville Jaguars. For those of you who are left, it is time to decide on your next play to hopefully stay alive.

The chalk: Buffalo Bills

Who they play: Home vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, 1 p.m.

This could be the easiest pick of the entire season. Not only is Pittsburgh coming off a devastating 24-20 loss to the New York Jets, but they have also decided to move on to rookie QB Kenny Pickett for this showdown.

The last meeting between these teams, a 23-16 victory by the Steelers on opening day last season, has left a bitter taste in the mouths of Bills QB Josh Allen and company. They will want to avenge this loss while also hoping to gain their position back atop the AFC East with a victory and a potential Dolphins loss. Vegas thinks this will be a non-competitive game with the Bills listed as 14-point favorites. I agree and therefore the BUFFALO BILLS ARE MY FAVORITE SURVIVOR PLAY in Week 5.

Off the board: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Who they play: Home vs. Atlanta Falcons, 1 p.m.

QB Tom Brady and the Buccaneers looked terrible on Sunday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs in a 41-31 loss. With all the devastation left from the remnants of Hurricane Ian, it is easy to see why they were preoccupied. This week will be different.

The Buccaneers got behind early in Week 4. This led them to have to abandon the run game (6 carries for 2 yards). The Falcons’ defense is mediocre at best and the Buccaneers will reassert the run game with RB Leonard Fournette here.

On the other side, TE Kyle Pitts has still not been involved in the game plan for the Atlanta Falcons this season. Their only true weapon to this point, RB Cordarrelle Patterson (leg) is now on IR, and it will be left to rookies WR Drake London and RB Tyler Allgeier to get the offense in motion.

The Tampa Bay defense was embarrassed Sunday. It will show this week what it truly is against a depleted Falcons offense. The line for this one is Buccaneers -8.5 (-110), and this is about right. But do not be surprised if this game gets out of hand in favor of Tampa Bay.
