Raiders sign former Chiefs starter, Super Bowl champion Darius Harris

The #Chiefs saw one of their 2022 starters sign with an AFC West rival when LB Darius Harris agreed to terms with the #Raiders on Monday.

The Kansas City Chiefs saw one of their top starters in last year’s Super Bowl LVII championship campaign sign with an AFC West rival on Monday when linebacker Darius Harris agreed to terms on a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Harris, a former Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider, is expected to be an early contributor in Las Vegas’ defense as the storied franchise looks to rebuild after the departure of quarterback Derek Carr in the offseason.

Details of Harris’ new deal are not yet known, but the contract isn’t expected to break the bank for the Raiders, who only have about $5 million in cap space according to overthecap.com.

The fourth-year linebacker made four starts for Kansas City last season, recording 43 combined tackles and tallying one and a half sacks in the Chiefs’ march to the playoffs. He wasn’t so productive in the postseason, though, only racking up four solo tackles in Kansas City’s three-game playoff effort.

Chiefs guard Trey Smith excited to don pads for first time since Super Bowl LVII

#Chiefs guard Trey Smith spoke about putting on pads for the first time since Super Bowl LVII after practice on Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ intensity at training camp took another step up on Friday as the team conducted their first practice in pads. The addition of the protective equipment under their uniforms will allow for physicality during workouts as the Chiefs continue to get in shape before their first preseason game in August.

Friday’s practice was circled on the calendars of many players, but Kansas City’s linemen in particular, for that reason. The most anticipatory of any Chiefs lineman was guard Trey Smith, according to his teammate Creed Humphrey who spoke on the matter during his comments to reporters earlier in the week.

Smith is well-known for being a physical presence on the team’s offensive line and spoke with the media on Friday about his mindset now that he is finally able to get rough with Kansas City’s front four in practice.

Said Smith: “You know, the first time you put on the pads, obviously, you’re still a little bit rusty. Someone made a comment earlier; the last time we really put in pads was during the Super Bowl. I was like, dang, it’s been a while.

“So, you know, you have some things that you got to clean up, some things you can be a little bit tighter, technique-wise, but it’s always good to put the pads back on. It’s always good knowing the [regular season is] around the corner.”

Smith and his teammates had a life-changing experience during their last time in pads when they earned Kansas City its third Super Bowl title back in February.

Hopefully, the work that they started on Friday will help them achieve their ultimate goal of winning yet another ring and ending the 2023 season covered in championship confetti once more.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson says Eagles D-Line would have smashed Chiefs’ O-Line on ‘legit grass’

Discourse regarding the playing surface in Super Bowl LVII continues with C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s bold claim about the #Eagles D-Line and #Chiefs’ O-Line.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former Philadelphia Eagles DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson was tweeting through it in regards to the Super Bowl LVII turf on Monday, taking aim at both the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line.

The discourse surrounding the field at Arizona’s State Farm Stadium continues during this dead portion of the offseason. First, it was Brandon Graham blaming the turf for their loss in the Super Bowl. Now, a recent report indicated that the NFL privately blamed players’ choice in cleat studs for the issues with footing in Super Bowl LVII.

Gardner-Johnson saw aggregation of the report on social media and reacted, mentioning that he changed out his cleats three different times during pre-game warm-ups.

Gardner-Johnson’s next comments were about the turf that Arizona used in the regular season, saying they should have stuck to the original playing surface. Ironically, the Chiefs actually played in Arizona during Week 1 of the regular season as well. Andy Reid even claimed in an interview with Pro Football Talk that the equipment staff was prepared given the issues they had with footing back in Week 1 against the Cardinals, which caused injuries to both Harrison Butker and Trent McDuffie.

Alas, Gardner-Johnson turned his focus to the Chiefs’ O-Line, claiming that the Eagles’ D-Line would “smash” them on “legit grass.” Of course, Kansas City’s offensive line allowed no sacks during the game.

Gardner-Johnson, now with the Detroit Lions, will get a stab at the Chiefs on the best playing surface in the NFL at Arrowhead Stadium during Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. We’ll see how his new team fairs against the latest iteration of the offensive line in Kansas City.

Chiefs CB Joshua Williams returns to Fayetteville State a Super Bowl champion

#Chiefs CB Joshua Williams returned to his alma mater, Super Bow LVII ring in tow, to host a youth football camp this past week.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Kansas City Chiefs CB Joshua Williams returned to his HBCU alma mater — Fayetteville State University — this past week to host a youth football camp.

A year ago at this time, Williams was just entering the league as a bright-eyed rookie. Now, he returned to Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina as a Super Bowl champion.

“It was good,” Williams told CBS reporter Chris Clark. “It really reminded me of when I was a kid — these kids are really out here competing.”

One of the reasons that the kids are out there playing with such passion is because they know they’re in the presence of a Super Bowl-winning defensive back. He represents what these kids can achieve with hard work and dedication.

Williams, of course, brought his brand new Super Bowl LVII ring along.

“It’s a manifestation of all the work you put in through the year,” Williams explained. “You know. . . training camp, preseason, the regular season, all the way into the playoffs, all the way into the AFC Championship Game and then the Super Bowl. All of that hard work has paid off. It’s just breathtaking. I couldn’t even speak, all I could do was look at it. Of course, it looks good, but it just feels good to get that. It is ‘blingy’, don’t get me wrong, but it has some real sentimental value.”

The 2022 NFL season is still processing for Williams. He was thrown into the fray early as a rookie and it was a whirlwind of a year culminating in a championship win.

The second-year corner says using his now 20 games of NFL experience to fortify his game for the 2023 NFL season, with the goal of becoming the best version of himself on the field. Last year was about surviving for Williams, but he says this year is all about thriving.

“A lot of those firsts, you’re just thrown into a lot of situations,” Williams said. “Of course, you may have been prepared, but you didn’t have the experience to go along with it. So, I feel like this year has just been fine-tuning everything, building on every good thing I did last year and breaking down any bad thing that I did. You know, working on any weakness I have. Perfecting the playbook. Really trying to master and understand everything that goes on around me. Last year a lot of that was, let me just know what (responsibility) I have for this game, for whatever situation, you just wanted to survive. Now, I’m trying to go out there and thrive and actually be the best I can be.”

With teammates Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed sidelined by injury early in the offseason program, Williams should certainly receive the practice repetitions necessary to achieve those goals.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones ends speculation over Super Bowl ring ceremony absence

#Chiefs DT Chris Jones put an end to the speculation surrounding his absence from the team’s Super Bowl LVII ring ceremony.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones’ absence from the team’s Super Bowl LVII ring ceremony wasn’t related to his current contract situation.

Yes, Jones skipped out on the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp, leaving himself open to nearly $100K in fines as he awaits a long-term contract extension. When he missed the team’s Super Bowl LVII ring ceremony on Thursday, fans began to assume the worst and that his absence was somehow related.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach told reporters that he “felt good” about contract negotiations, expressing that he’d be surprised if Jones didn’t attend the ring ceremony. Well, Jones didn’t attend, but as it turns out, the absence was entirely unrelated.

Jones responded to a fan on Twitter over the weekend, explaining that he couldn’t attend the ceremony because he was sick.

Now this could be a convenient excuse, but Jones has no reason to mislead his fans. He has always maintained that he doesn’t want to play for another franchise. He wants to finish his career in Kansas City and continue competing for championships with his teammates.

The current expectation among coaches, executives and players in the building is that Jones and the Chiefs will strike a deal on an extension ahead of or right after the beginning of training camp. His current four-year deal with the Chiefs came right ahead of the deadline for teams to extend franchise-tag players. Given that Jones is under contract, there isn’t a hard deadline for an extension.

Miles Sanders enjoying increased role with Panthers after lack of opportunities in Super Bowl

Carolina running back Miles Sanders is relishing his increased role with Panthers after lack of carries and opportunities in Eagles’ Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Miles Sanders took his talents to Carolina in free agency, signing a four-year deal worth $25 million with $13 million guaranteed.

His last appearance as an Eagle was an unforgettable performance in the Super Bowl LVII loss, where Sanders logged seven carries for 16 yards in a 38-35 loss.

Now comfortably meshing with the new-look Panthers and quarterback Bryce Young, Sanders told the Associated Press that heeady for ‘more opportunities’ to help Carolina after his Super Bowl disappointment.

“Last game of the season? For all of the marbles? Everybody can answer that question,” Sanders said when asked if he was disappointed by how he was used in the Super Bowl. “If they put themselves in my shoes, would they be happy? I don’t want to make headlines, (but) if it does, I don’t care.”

Sanders said that isn’t the reason he left Philadelphia.

“I can get into that another day, maybe,” Sanders said. “Maybe you should ask them why I’m moving here.”

Sanders isn’t here because Philadelphia doesn’t value the running back position, and all four key ball carriers under contract make about the same as Sanders combined.

Sanders had his best season as a pro in 2022 but only played 34% of the offensive snaps, while Gainwell played more than 50% in the 38-35 loss.
