Alabama OC Steve Sarkisian undergoes successful heart surgery

The Crimson Tide offensive coordinator is resting at home following the procedure last week.

On Tuesday, Alabama football announced that Steve Sarkisian, the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator, had underwent a successful heart surgery last week.

Per the statement:

“The Alabama football coaching staff participates in an annual executive physical,” Alabama released in its statement. “During Coach Sarkisian’s physical last week, it was determined that he needed a procedure to correct a congenital cardiovascular anomaly before it became an issue. Coach Sarkisian underwent a successful procedure this past Thursday (July 2) in Birmingham. He is back home in Tuscaloosa and is expected to make a full recovery.”

“The Alabama Football coaching staff participates in an annual executive physical. During coach Sarkisian’s physical last week, it was determined that he needed a procedure to correct a congenital cardiovascular anomaly before it became an issue. Coach Sarkisian underwent a successful procedure this past Thursday (July 2) in Birmingham. He is back home in Tuscaloosa and is expected to make a full recovery.”

There have been no details released regarding his recovery time, and what this means for practice and the upcoming season.

Sarkisian joined the Crimson Tide in 2016 as an analyst in 2016 before taking over as offensive coordinator in the National Championship game in 2017. Less than a month later, he joined the Atlanta Falcons as offensive coordinator and stayed there for two seasons. In 2019, Sarkisian rejoined Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa and helped the Crimson Tide to an 11-2 season.

According to reports from CBS Sports, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian may once again be leaving Tuscaloosa, this time to become head coach for the Colorado Buffaloes.

CBS reported that “As of Wednesday, the pecking order to replace Mel Tucker is believed to be Sarkisian, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and former Wisconsin and Arkansas coach Bret Bielema.”

Sarkisian’s last head coaching job ended in 2015 when he was fired from USC. Since then, he has been offensive coordinator at Alabama (twice) as spending a year as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2017-2018.

Salary info has been reported for new Georgia football OC Todd Monken,.

New Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken was recently hired by Kirby Smart to bring the Bulldogs’ passing game up to speed with the rest of college football.

Monken, who previously coached as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Bucs, will take over for James Coley calling plays.

Per contract information obtained by DawgNation, we now know Monken’s salary at Georgia.

Monken will be earning $1.1 million as Georgia’s offensive coordinator in 2020.

According to the College Football Assistant Coach Salaries database at USA TODAY, that figure will make Monken a top-15 paid assistant in college football. There are only two offensive coordinators who earn more than Monken – Steve Sarkisian at Alabama ($1.55m) and Jim Chaney at Tennessee ($1.5m).

Coley, who remains on staff at the moment, earned $950,000 last season as offensive coordinator of the Bulldogs.

As reported by 247Sports, new UGA quality control analyst Buster Faulkner will earn a $150,000 salary.
