Texas announces Steve Sarkisian as its head football coach

Steve Sarkisian is leaving Alabama to become head coach at Texas

That didn’t take long.

Hours after firing Tom Herman on Saturday, the University of Texas hired Alabama OC Steve Sarkisian as its head football coach.

For Sarkisian, it is a return to head coaching at a legendary program. The 46-year-old was named head coach at USC in Dec. 2013. He remained in that position until Oct.11, 2015, when it was announced Sarkisian would take an indefinite leave of absence.

The next day Sarkisian was fired. It was reported he had issues with alcoholo and there had been several incidents.

He became an analyst for Alabama football in 2016. In 2017, he was hired by the Atlanta Falcons and return to the Crimson Tide in 2019 as offensive coordinator.

Overall as a head coach, he has a 46-35 mark, including five seasons at Washington.

Sarkisian will remain with Alabama through its Jan. 11 College Football Playoff championship game with Ohio State.

This is four years to the date of when another Alabama OC left for a head coaching job. Lane Kiffin took the Florida Atlantic job and elected to remain as the Alabama Offensive Coordinator through the playoffs, However, Kiffin was relieved of his duties as OC and replaced in the interim by … Sarkisian.

He stepped into the role in the National Championship game against Clemson. The Tide would lose narrowly to the Tigers in his first and only game of the 2016 season as offensive coordinator at that time.

It’s official, Steve Sarkisian named next head coach at Texas

It is officially official as the Texas Longhorns named Alabama assistant Steve Sarkisian the successor to Tom Herman.

After hours of speculation on if Steve Sarkisian turned down the job offer at Texas, we have our answer. The Texas Longhorns announced that the current offensive coordinator at Alabama is indeed the successor to Tom Herman. Did Steve Sarkisian end up turning down the Texas head coaching job?

Alabama offensive coordinator has been linked to the Texas Longhorns head coaching job, but now some analysts and reporters are pointing…

Earlier today, the University of Texas announced Tom Herman would no longer be the head coach of the Longhorns, and in what appeared to be in the same breath, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian had been assumed the new hire.

Sarkisian, who has been linked to head coaching vacancies across the country, was recently given a raise of $3.5 million after he withdrew his name from consideration for the Auburn job.

The report, which originated from 247Sports’ Chip Brown, made it seem like a done deal. However, prominent college football analysts and reporters are beginning to hear otherwise.

David Pollack of ESPN tweeted that he is hearing both sides: that Sarkisian has been hired, and also that he hasn’t accepted the job.

Fox Sports commentator Tim Brando has also publicized what he’s hearing, and it corroborates Pollack’s claim that he could have turned the job down.

There’s no official word on the status of Steve Sarkisian, but it has been made clear that Texas football is currently without a head coach, as Tom Herman has been terminated.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to post updates as more become available regarding Sarkisian and his future with the Crimson Tide.

Update: ESPN’s David Pollack has ‘heard’ Steve Sarkisian turned Texas down

In a whirlwind of event around Texas Longhorns football program, David Pollack of ESPN states that Steve Sarkisian turned down the job.

What would a Texas Longhorns head coaching search be without a little bit of drama? News broke that Tom Herman was terminated on Saturday morning and his replacement would be Alabama’s offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

Sarkisian had two different stints with the Crimson Tide sandwiched around a stint in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. Now the Longhorns have zeroed in on him as the next head coach for Texas. Although, maybe there should be some brake pumping when it comes to getting too excited about the possibility of landing Sark as the guy for Texas. At least according to ESPN’s David Pollack.

That would be quite the turn of events on Saturday morning. Relieving Tom Herman of his duties to naming his successor to being turned down in a matter of hours. Nothing is official until it is official, but Pollack is a trusted media member when it comes to college football.

The question now is, are you entertained?

Texas should be in the national championship hunt every year.

At the very least, it should be in the Big 12 Championship game every season in an okay-not-amazing conference. The school and football program are bound by nothing, they have all the resources, the right recruiting base, and no real excuse to not at least be a bigger overall player.

However, even with a minor miracle to get by Texas Tech, and a few too many tight fights, the Longhorns only had three losses, and they were all close. They lost by three to TCU, lost on a late field goal against Iowa State, and lost in a crazy firefight to Oklahoma. Texas went 7-3, blew out Colorado in the Alamo Bowl, and … fired Tom Herman.

Herman went 32-18 in his four years with no Big 12 Championships and just one conference title appearance, but he won all four of his bowl appearances.

He’s out, and Steve Sarkisian is in.

The current Alabama offensive coordinator has taking the Tide attack to another level, helped make it all explode even after losing star WR Jaylen Waddle, and he’s got the seal of approval from Nick Saban as one of his top assistants ever.

He struggled at Washington – earning the moniker Seven Win Sark after going 34-29 in five years – he never went better than 5-4 in his time in Seattle – and went 9-4 in one year at USC before off-the-field and personal issues led to his dismissal.

He revived his career as a high-end offensive coordinator, and now it’s his job to bring that offensive magic from Alabama to Texas, start beating Oklahoma, start winning Big 12 Championships, and get the program back to being among the elite of the elite.

Report: Steve Sarkisian expected to be named new head coach

The Texas Longhorns removed Tom Herman from his spot as head coach, he is to be replaced by Alabama’s Steve Sarkisian per reports.

The news broke on Saturday morning that Tom Herman was relieved of his duties as the head coach. The next question is who will be replacing him as the new lead man in Austin? According to a report from Horns247, that man is Steve Sarkisian.

Currently, Sark is the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide and is preparing for a College Football Playoff National Championship game. This would be his third shot at being the head coach after stops in Washington and a failed stint to replace Lane Kiffin at USC.

One thing that should be exciting is the level of recruiting on the offensive side of the ball for Sarkisian. Not to mention his offense at Alabama put on offensive explosion after explosion.

The Alabama offense averaged 49.7 points per game and 543.9 yards of total offense per game. Both were top five in the country. The biggest question is did he learn from his mistakes at USC? After learning under one of the best college coaches of all-time in Nick Saban, one should believe that he is ready for this opportunity.

Sarkisian has held other head coaching positions in the past in Washington and USC, now he will be taking his talents to the BIG12 to coach the Texas Longhorns.

Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman has been terminated

The Texas Longhorns decided to go in a different route as they terminated Tom Herman just days after defeated Colorado 55-23.

There has been a lot of discussions about the possibility of Tom Herman being let go after the season. On Saturday morning it became a reality for the man who replaced Charlie Strong. The University announced they would be moving on from Herman in a statement.

With our football season coming to a close, our vice president and athletics director, Chris Del Conte, has evaluated the UT program’s strengths and weaknesses and where the program is relative to our goals. While we have made measured progress during the past several years under Tom Herman’s leadership, Chris has recommended to the university president, Jay Hartzell, that UT make a coaching change to get us on track to achieving our ambitious goals. President Hartzell and the chair of our Board of Regents, Kevin Eltife, concur with this recommendation and have approved the change. We thank Coach Herman for his service and dedication to our student-athletes, our program and our university.

Herman finished out his Longhorns career as the head coach with a 32-18 record and 22-13 in conference play. The latest name to replace him will be current Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian according to reports.

Hugh Freeze discusses analyzing Alabama every week while at Liberty

Hugh Freeze discusses analyzing Alabama every week, key in defeating the Crimson Tide.

Hugh Freeze has experienced success coaching against three Southeastern Conference head coaches that are playing in New Year’s Six bowl games this season.

Freeze is 18-6 with two bowl victories in as many seasons as Liberty’s head coach.

He was 39-25 from 2012-16 at Ole Miss.

While at Ole Miss, Freeze was 3-2 against Dan Mullen and Mississippi State, 2-3 versus Nick Saban’s Alabama teams and 1-0 taking on Kirby Smart at Georgia.

“I was fortunate to beat people like Nick Saban and Kirby Smart and Dan Mullen, that are in that league and with probably a lesser roster than what they had,” Freeze said during a media availability ahead of Liberty’s bowl game against Coastal Carolina.

Following Liberty’s 37-34 overtime victory over Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl, Freeze was a guest on “The Paul Finebaum Show.”

Breaking down Steve Sarkisian’s offense

Finebaum asked Freeze about Alabama’s offense during the 2020 season under coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

The Crimson Tide have two Heisman Trophy finalists this season in quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver DeVonta Smith. Running back Najee Harris is fifth amongst top 10 finishers in the 2020 Heisman Trophy voting.

“I don’t watch many teams on film because I’m obviously pretty consumed with who we are, and would like to think that we know what we’re doing offensively, and I think the stats over my ten or so years in the college game prove that we do,” Freeze said. “I will tell you this, there is one team that my video coordinator will have cued up for me on Sundays when I come in to watch, and it’s Alabama. Sarkisian is great gameday play-caller, and you’ve put together the best of the best – offensive line, tight ends, receivers and quarterbacks – that they’ve had over the last few years, and you see what’s happening because they have expanded their offense to what I consider to be the up to date version of offensive football.

“It is so difficult because you have to put an extra guy accounting to the run, to stop their run game. With the quality of offensive line and tailbacks that they have, and it just forces you to be in too many one-on-one situations with the receivers that they have. It will take an absolute elite defense to slow them down – and really I don’t know if that is really a possibility. My goal, if I were coaching the defense that had to play them, would be to work all week long, on what are we going to do when they get to the 25-yard line because here is the key – we have to hold them to some field goals.”

Vols Wire previously provided a breakdown of Freeze’s offenses by the numbers since he has been a head coach at the FBS level.

“I will never change what we do offensively. I don’t know all but what we’ve done, it’s had success everywhere we’ve been. It’s what I am familiar with and what I feel comfortable calling the game with, so we’re doing the same stuff.” — Hugh Freeze on the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days”
