Panthers GM Dan Morgan asked if there are new developments with free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore

Has there been any recent movement between the Panthers and free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore?

Mum still seems to be the word between Stephon Gilmore and the Carolina Panthers.

Before kicking off training camp on Wednesday, president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan chatted with reporters this afternoon. He was asked if he had anything new to offer on the free-agent cornerback.

“I think with all free agents, they’re on the street,” Morgan replied. “We contact all the free agents out on the street, kinda get their status, see where they’re at from a money perspective, just kinda see where they’re at. Are they interested in our organization? Are they interested in playing for us here?

“So we keep in contact with everybody. We’re gonna try to sign guys that fit what we do. And if they’re a fit out there and they’re a free agent on the street, then we’re gonna entertain all those guys.”

Gilmore, a former Panther, may have been one of those guys earlier on this offseason. Morgan, in fact, said back in April that the team would “leave the door open” on a possible reunion.

The 2019 AP Defensive Player of the Year and five-time Pro Bowler could be of great help to the Panthers, even as he’s set to turn 34 years old in September. Other than starter Jaycee Horn, Carolina’s current stable of outside cornerbacks feature a handful of relative unknowns including Dane Jackson, Dicaprio Bootle, D’Shawn Jamison and Lamar Jackson.

Ravens named as a possible landing spot for free agent CB Stephon Gilmore

The Ravens were named as a possible landing spot for free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore

The Baltimore Ravens will enter the 2024 training camp with questions about which players will step up after losing major talent during the offseason. One area to look at is the team’s secondary, where their cornerback room has plenty of depth, but the safety position does not outside of their two stars, Kyle Hamilton and Marcus Williams.

When naming landing spots for veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports threw the Ravens into the ring. He talked about how Gilmore and fellow cornerback Marlon Humphrey could be mentors for rookie Nate Wiggins, and playing in Baltimore could allow the veteran to compete for another Super Bowl.

“Gilmore, along with Humphrey, could prove to be two great mentors for Wiggins. Plus, teaming up with two-time NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson would allow the 12-year vet to remain in the Super Bowl hunt in his 13th season.”

The Ravens already have Humphrey, Wiggins, Brandon Stephens, T.J. Tampa, and more in their cornerback room. While Gilmore could potentially move to safety at this point in his career, it seems like he wants to stay at his regular position, making it challenging to see a fit in Baltimore without an injury.

CB Stephon Gilmore reacts to still being an unsigned free agent

Stephon Gilmore is still a free agent

Former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore is still looking for a team to play for this fall.

However, he isn’t ready to hit the panic button just yet. There is still plenty of time for his phone to ring before the start of the season. There’s also the fact that he doesn’t believe there are 64 starting corners in the NFL better than he is right now.

“Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have in training camp; but you mean to tell me among 32 teams that there are 64 starting corners that are better than me? I don’t think that.” Gilmore told NFL insider Josina Anderson. “If teams want to win, I think they should sign the best players. I know I’m still a starter in this league. I started games last year, but the season doesn’t start until September, we got a while.”

Gilmore most recently played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. He recorded 68 tackles, 13 pass deflections and a forced fumble in a one-and-done season with the team.

The former Defensive Player of the Year has had three quick stops with the Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers since his four-year run with the Patriots.

His best years came in New England, where he won a defensive MVP and a Super Bowl. The veteran defensive back seemed open to a possible return to the Patriots when asked about it at the Tom Brady Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The Patriots could use cornerback depth on the field, and a player like Gilmore being in the locker room could be a positive for the younger defensive backs, including 2023 first-round draft pick Christian Gonzalez.

New England was plagued with depth issues at the position last season, and things got tough for the team late in the year.

Gilmore might be on the back end of his career at age 33, but it could still be worth it for the Patriots to take a flyer on him as a possible low-risk, high-reward option.

Former Panthers CB Stephon Gilmore gives update on his free-agent status

Free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore: “I know I’m still a starter in this league.”

The waiting game continues for former Carolina Panthers cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

As arrivals for training camp begin to trickle in this week, the two-time First-team All-Pro and 2019 Defensive Player of the Year still remains a free agent. Gilmore provided an update on his status to NFL insider Josina Anderson, who posted the following quote from the 33-year-old defender on Tuesday afternoon:

“There are still some good corners and safeties out there like Justin Simmons and myself that are still not signed. Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have in training camp; but you mean to tell me among 32 teams that there are 64 starting corners that are better than me? I don’t think that. If teams want to win, I think they should sign the best players. I know I’m still a starter in this league. I started games last year, but the season doesn’t start until September, we got a while.”

Gilmore has been linked back to Carolina a few times this offseason. New Panther, fellow Rock Hill, S.C. native and University of South Carolina teammate Jadeveon Clowney has even hinted at bringing his old pal in—telling reporters he’s remained in touch with Gilmore since his signing.

The Panthers traded for Gilmore in the middle of the 2021 campaign. He earned his fifth career Pro Bowl selection despite playing in just nine games that season.

Raiders 2024 camp position battle: Cornerback

One of the cornerback spots is wide open for the Raiders. Is the starter currently on the team?

Outside cornerback was a bit of a revolving door last season. The starters at the beginning of the season were rookie Jakorian Bennett on the left and veteran Marcus Peters on the right. And neither were starting by season’s end.

Four games in, Bennett was benched in favor of Amik Robertson. Then ten games in, Peters was benched for waiver pickup Jack Jones.

Jones played well enough to keep the starting job. Amik Robertson left in free agency, leaving the left side up for grabs this offseason.

As of right now there are two guys competing for the job.

Jakorian Bennett vs Brandon Facyson

The veteran Facyson might have been the starter coming into last season had he not been injured in camp, thus opening the door for Bennett. Now they battle for that spot once again.

The two rotated work with the first team defense during minicamp, with Bennett coming away with a couple interceptions. Bennett has speed to burn while the seventh-year veteran Facyson is more of a proven talent, though only once starting more than four games in a season.

My take:

This competition is far from settled. It could be one of these two or…someone else entirely.

I wouldn’t be surprised if by the time camp begins, there is another name who enters this competition. There are still a few good cornerback options unsigned who would either offer an immediate starter or heat up the competition at that spot. Stephon Gilmore, Adoree Jackson, and Ahkello Witherspoon top that list.

Giants are betting favorites to sign this four-time All-Pro safety

The New York Giants are betting favorites to sign both a four-time All-Pro safety and a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Denver Broncos waived four-time Second Team All-Pro safety Justin Simmons in an effort to save $14.5 million against the salary cap back in March. Surprisingly, the 30-year-old remains available.

With obvious and glaring needs in their secondary, the New York Giants could become a potential destination. In fact, BetOnline has them as the odds-on favorites to land the prized free agent.

As of this writing, the Giants are +400 to sign Simmons, just ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles (+600) and Buffalo Bills (+800). The San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns are also listed at +900 each.

Simmons, who is also a two-time Pro Bowler, has appeared in 118 career games (108 starts) and recorded 604 tackles (443 solo, 19 for a loss), five QB hits, 4.5 sacks, 64 passes defensed, 30 interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

In 2022, Simmons led the NFL with six interceptions.

The veteran would be an ideal option for the Giants if general manager Joe Schoen valued the safety position but after allowing Julian Love and Xavier McKinney to walk in back-to-back years, it’s clear that he doesn’t.

In addition to Simmons, BetOnline also has the Giants at +700 to sign veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore (third-best odds) and +400 to sign four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard (best odds).

One way or another, BetOnline expects the Giants to add a body to their secondary ahead of training camp.

Former Panthers CB Stephon Gilmore still waiting on ‘right opportunity’ in free agency

Ex-Panthers CB Stephon Gilmore on his free agency: “I’m just being patient and waiting for the right opportunity.”

Tom Brady’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction played host to a who’s who of NFL greats, including a former Carolina Panther.

Free-agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore, a teammate of Brady’s from 2017 to 2019, was on hand for the occasion in Foxborough this past week. The 33-year-old was asked if he’d be interested in making a return to New England.

“You never know. I’ll weigh any options,” Gilmore said, via Nick O’Malley of MassLive.“This is a place that I played great ball, so just letting it play out how it’s gonna be.”

After being named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year as a Patriot in 2019, Gilmore would then be traded to the Panthers in the middle of the 2020 campaign. The Rock Hill, S.C. native played nine games for his hometown team, a tenure that resulted in his fifth career Pro Bowl selection.

Gilmore has also been linked back to Carolina this offseason. But the latest on that potential reunion, according to Joe Person of The Athletic, is that there was “no movement” on a deal as of five weeks ago.

So until one is reached with somebody, the outlook remains the same for Gilmore.

“Being patient right now,” he said. “I feel good, Year 13, been playing a long time. So I’m just being patient and waiting for the right opportunity.”

CB Stephon Gilmore open to returning to Patriots

Stephon Gilmore isn’t ruling out a return to New England.

Free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore did not rule out a return to the New England Patriots when asked by Barstool Sports at the Tom Brady Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Wednesday.

Gilmore had a tremendously successful run in New England. He played for the organization from 2017-2019 and earned two Pro Bowl nods and the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year award. He recorded 11 interceptions and 185 combined tackles in 56 games during his Patriots tenure.

His last stop was with the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, and he recorded 68 tackles and two interceptions on the year. At 33 years old, Gilmore is looking for his next NFL opportunity. Could it be in New England?

“You never know,” said Gilmore.

It remains to be seen if this will happen, as the Patriots have a formidable secondary as it stands.

Nevertheless, Gilmore’s return would add another piece to an already loaded defensive unit, and a reunion would certainly be a low-risk, high-reward move.

Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney says he’s still trying to recruit Stephon Gilmore

Jadeveon Clowney still wants the Panthers to sign free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore.

Did Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney do any more recruiting while he was away from the team?

The 11th-year veteran returned for mandatory minicamp this week, and even hit the lectern for some questions on Tuesday. Clowney was asked if he’s still trying to bring fellow Rock Hill, S.C. native and Gamecock Stephon Gilmore to the Panthers.

“Oh yeah, that’s my guy, I talk to him all the time,” he replied with a smile. “He want me to move out here though. I was like, ‘Bro, I ain’t movin’ up there.’ But we can hang out. Just come on and sign with the Panthers and be up here with me.”

Gilmore, who remains a free agent, played nine games for Carolina during the 2021 campaign. He’s since picked up one-year stops with the Indianapolis Colts and the Dallas Cowboys.

Clowney continued.

“I stay out of it, let him do his thing,” he added. “I just hope and pray he end up here with me. But it’s fun. It’s fun. Like I said, just talking to him and just picking his brain. He got options. When you got options, it’s even funner. So, I ‘m just ready to see where he end up.”

Former Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore a ‘logical fit’ for Commanders

Should the Commanders sign cornerback Stephon Gilmore?

It’s no secret the Washington Commanders have question marks at cornerback. Will Emmanuel Forbes blossom under the new coaching staff? Can this staff help Benjamin St-Juste reverse his 2023 fortunes?

The Commanders better hope both players can give them something in 2024. Washington allowed its best cornerback, Kendall Fuller, to walk in free agency. Considering Fuller’s age and injury history, general manager Adam Peters made a wise decision.

However, the Commanders didn’t sign a starting-level cornerback outside of Michael Davis. The 29-year-old Davis spent the past seven seasons with the Chargers, where he appeared in 107 games with 74 starts. Davis isn’t a shutdown cornerback, but he is a good, dependable veteran. Outside of Davis, the Commanders added other veterans for depth, who will compete for a roster spot.

Washington selected Michigan cornerback Mike Sainristil in the second round of the NFL draft. Sainristil is strictly a slot cornerback, meaning the Commanders could still use another veteran insurance policy on the outside.

There’s a perfect candidate available who has played for head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.

Gilmore will be 34 in September, but last season, he proved he can still play. A two-time first-team All-Pro, five-time Pro Bowler, and former NFL Defensive MVP, Gilmore started all 17 games for the Cowboys last season under Quinn and Whitt. Gilmore recorded 68 tackles, two interceptions, and 13 passes defended.

Teams are clearly staying away from Gilmore due to his age. However, proven veterans like Gilmore often do not sign with a team until training camp or after Week 1, so he could remain an available option or them.

Bleacher Report recently named Gilmore as a “logical fit” for Washington. We agree.

The Washington Commanders would be wise to give him a call as well. They lost Kendall Fuller in free agency, and Gilmore has experience with new head coach Dan Quinn.

Gilmore to Washington makes sense. The Commanders have signed numerous veterans to short-term deals who have connections to the new coaching staff. Why not give Gilmore a call?

Even if Forbes and St-Juste look to be progressing this summer, Gilmore would be a worthy addition to the 2024 roster.
