Georgia freshman standing out so far through spring practice

Joseph Jonah-Ajonye has caught the attention of numerous observers thus far through spring for his size, versatility, and the reps he is getting early on.

Early signs have pointed to one newcomer on the defensive side of the ball having a chance to be a major producer for Georgia this season.

Joseph Jonah-Ajonye has caught the attention of numerous observers thus far because of his size, versatility and number of reps he is getting.

The former five-star has joined incumbent edge rusher Mykel Williams  rotating between outside linebacker and defensive end drills during practices, reflecting the versatility in his game. He is listed at 6 feet, 4 inches and 275 pounds, and he has been lauded by many for his build, including DawgNation’s Connor Riley who compared it to “that of a moose.”

Jonah-Ajonye has been able to get added experience during practice as a result of both the absence of Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins and the lack of experience at the outside linebacker position for the Dawgs. Kirby Smart recently commented on Jonah-Ajonye, saying, “He’s getting 40-50 reps per day, which is huge for his development.”

A native Nigerian, Jonah-Ajonye has given himself the moniker “the Nigerian Nightmare” as a nod to legendary NFL fullback Christian Okoye. In his original commitment announcement, he said, “If you are a football player that loves to win, be surrounded by amazing people, and get developed at a high level, Georgia is a no-brainer.”

Former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones attends spring practice on Tuesday

New York Giants quarterback and former first-round pick Daniel Jones returned to Durham to watch the 2024 team get some work in on Tuesday.

Duke football spring practice is underway in Durham, and there was a familiar face along the sidelines on Tuesday.

Daniel Jones, the New York Giants quarterback and sixth-overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, came back to campus to watch his former team get some work in ahead of the 2024 season.

Jones started for the Blue Devils for three seasons, throwing for 8,201 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions across 36 games. He added 1,323 yards and 17 touchdowns with his legs.

As the Giants quarterback, Jones only played in six games last season as he battled multiple injuries, and his season ended after he tore his ACL in November. He did lead the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, winning a Wild Card Round game over the Vikings for the team’s first playoff win in 11 years.

Former Blue Devils receiver Jake Bobo, now a member of the Seattle Seahawks, joined Jones on the sidelines. Bobo played for the Blue Devils for four seasons before transferring to UCLA for his senior campaign. He caught 19 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns with Seattle as a rookie.

Jones got a close look at former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy, who committed to the Blue Devils back in December. A former four-star recruit, Murphy is the highest-rated quarterback prospect to ever suit up for Duke.

Breaking: Flynn Appleby is no longer with Rutgers football

Flynn Appleby is not on the Rutgers football roster.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Flynn Appleby is not on the roster for Rutgers football, the Australian punter not returning for a third season with the Big Ten program.

The only punter currently on the Rutgers roster is Michael Hartshorn, a freshman from Pennsylvania who did not punt in a game last year. Head coach Greg Schiano confirmed on Tuesday that Appleby has left the team and is no longer pursuing football.

Last year, Appleby averaged 39.6 yards per punt. In the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl win over Miami, he had three punts for 40.6 yards.

Two of the Australian’s three punts landed inside the 20-yard line.

Appleby was a very worthy successor to Rutgers’ strong lineage of producing quality punters. In 2022, Adam Korsak won the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top punter. He became the first player in Rutgers football history to win a national award for on-the-field performance.

Prior to his time at Rutgers, Appleby played Australian Rules Football where he was a standout performer.

He was a redshirt as a freshman in 2022 before earning the starting job last year.

Four-star IMG Academy recruit gets live look at new Florida LB coach

Four-star IMG Academy linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng visited UF recently and got a live look at the Gators’ new linebackers coach.

Like any serious recruit, IMG Academy linebacker [autotag]Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng[/autotag] wants to know more about the coaches in place to develop him at the universities he’s still considering.

At the University of Florida, that would be Ron Roberts, who the football program hired as an executive head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach over the offseason. Owusu-Boateng visited the Swamp for one of Roberts’ first weekend of spring practices.

The experience was an eye-opening one for the linebacker, according to Swamp247.

“I was seeing the way Coach Roberts does things with his linebackers,” Owusu-Boateng said to Swamp247. “Not only that, but seeing the way he interacts and the way they interact with him as well. It tells me a lot just about his coaching or about his leadership, and how he sees his linebackers being fit for the scheme he has for them.”

Owusu-Boateng got a chance to see where he’d fit in Florida’s scheme and how those practices would run. Should he sign with UF, Owusu-Boatgeng is likely to spend time at both the MIKE and WILL linebacker positions in Gainesville.

A return visit isn’t on the books just yet, but an official visit might be in the works. Right now, he has summer dates locked in with Georgia, Stanford and South Carolina. An official visit to Florida might have to wait until the season begins.

Owusu-Boateng is a consensus four-star recruit ranked the highest by Rivals.com at No. 24 overall in the class of 2025. The On3 industry ranking, which considers all four major services, puts him at No. 59 nationally and No. 5 among linebackers in the class.

Duke fans get first glimpses of new QB Maalik Murphy in first spring practice video

Duke football fans got a glimpse of new quarterback Maalik Murphy and his talent in the team’s video recap of the start of spring practice.

Duke football fans got their first taste of the Manny Diaz era, and of new quarterback Maalik Murphy, in a short social media video shared on Saturday morning.

The Blue Devils cut together some highlights from the first day of spring practice, complete with agility drills, scrimmages, and some eye-popping throws from the new signal-caller.

The short clips showed the former Texas quarterback, who committed to the Blue Devils back in December, connecting with new teammates all over the field. At one point in the video, Murphy (wearing the number 57) even fired a no-look pass across his body.

He wasn’t the only passer to star in the short video, however, as one highlight showed Henry Belin IV launching a moonball for a deep completion.

The first season of the Diaz era starts on August 30 against Elon University.

Alabama leader shares extremely high praise for Kalen DeBoer

See why one Alabama player credits Kalen DeBoer for being “man enough” to accept the Alabama head coaching job.

New Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer is in a position that’s not envied by many. Taking over a program still in the midst of a dynasty and taking the reins from Nick Saban, who many consider the greatest college football coach of all time, is a difficult task.

Crimson Tide defensive standout and leader, Malachi Moore, expressed nothing but positive opinions on DeBoer. Whether it’s how he’s conducting practices or the courage he’s displayed in accepting the job, DeBoer seems to have seamlessly transitioned into his new role at the helm of the Alabama program.

“There’s a lot of new changes,” Moore told SEC analyst Cole Cubelic. “Coach Saban left a great legacy here, but Coach DeBoer, coming here and being man enough to come up here after Coach Saban and kind of take on this job head-on, it’s been really great. He’s been bringing a lot of great new energy into the atmosphere and a lot of new ideas, from just scheme-wise with Coach Wo and what we doing with having more vision on the quarterback, and things like that. It’s been fun.”

There have been concerns from fans over the transition of power, and there will continue to be qualms from the masses. However, Moore’s statements should not be taken lightly.

As a veteran Alabama defensive back, Moore not only served as a leader and contributor on the team, he’s been a players who worked closely with Saban. It appears as if DeBoer’s has taken over the job and adopted the systems that worked, while also implementing some changes that have boosted the players and staff as they prepare for the upcoming 2024 season.

There’s no telling how the team will perform under new direction, but it certainly looks like the program is ready to pick back up right where it left off last season: contenders for the national title.

A few months remain before the DeBoer era officially begins in Tuscaloosa, which should not be taken for granted by the new head coach. The 2024 offseason should not just be used as spare time to game plan, he must utilize the new few months to prove to his players that he’s capable of being the leader they need to carry on the legacy left behind by Saban.

Moore’s comments should serve as a sign of encouragement, seeing that players respect his courage for accepting the job, and that they appreciate the “new energy” he brings to the program.

Wisconsin releases updated roster ahead of 2024 spring practice

Wisconsin releases updated roster ahead of 2024 spring practice

Wisconsin football released an updated roster Wednesday afternoon, ahead of the fast-approaching 2024 spring practice period.

There are a few changes to note. The main change: former Michigan State transfer outside linebacker Jeff Pietrowski, tight end Cole Dakovich and linebacker Bryan Sanborn off the roster for medical reasons, according to WOZN’s Zach Heilprin.

Other than that there were no notable omissions from the roster. The only other things to note are former outside linebacker T.J. Bollers officially moving to defensive line, the jersey numbers of every incoming transfer and high school recruit, and the inevitable weight loss/gain chart which should drop in the coming days.

All systems are a ‘go’ for 2024 spring practice, which is set to begin at the end of the month. It’s a critical time for Luke Fickell, Phil Longo and the Wisconsin coaching staff as they work to improve upon 2023’s 7-6 record and establish the Badgers’ place in the new Big Ten landscape.

Game time, TV announced for Georgia’s G-Day spring scrimmage

We have official game time & TV info for UGA’s G-Day spring scrimmage game…

We have game time and TV information for Georgia’s annual G-Day spring scrimmage on Saturday, April 13. The game will begin at 1 p.m. ET and be shown on SEC Network+, the school announced on Monday.

The Bulldogs begin spring practice on Tuesday in the first of five weeks of practices on a Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday schedule. Fans will have their first chance to see the new breed of Bulldogs in Sanford Stadium on April 13.

Spring practice is is often underestimated when it comes to the college football schedule as a whole. It’s the first opportunity for young players to acclimate to Georgia’s process under head coach Kirby Smart and a key opportunity for those who are battling for starting spots this fall.

Georgia lost 21 players to the transfer portal and 12 players to NFL draft declarations this offseason. The sidelines will also look differently after the loss of key assistants from the 2023 season. While getting every new Bulldog acclimated will be a tough task for Smart and company, he’s done it before on the way to back-to-back national championships.

Taylen Green begins as Arkansas starting quarterback at first spring practice

Green is the front-runner for the gig, though Jacolby Criswell has a legit shot, as well.

KJ Jefferson had been a staple on the Arkansas football team for the last five years. His transfer left the Razorbacks with the biggest hole they have, arguably, ever had the position.

On Thursday, at Arkansas’ first spring practice without Jefferson since the Chad Morris era, Taylen Green took first-team reps. The Boise State transfer is one of four players vying for the starting gig this spring and the one with the most experience.

Green threw for more than 1,752 yards mostly as a starter for the Broncos last year, though he played off the bench during a stretch in the middle of the season. His 11 passing touchdowns led the team, but he also threw nine interceptions.

His biggest competition for the job at Arkansas is Jacolby Criswell, a Morrilton High grad. Criswell transferred from North Carolina the season before last and spent the 2023 campaign as Jefferson’s back-up.

Freshman KJ Jackson and redshirt freshman Malachi Jackson are also in the mix, though Jackson is largely expected to redshirt.

Whoever wins the job will have a bevy of options to whom he can throw. All of Arkansas’ top six receivers from last year returned. Jefferson, who left as Arkansas’ all-time leading passer, threw for more than 2,100 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions last year. He transferred to Central Florida over the winter.

The Razorbacks will continue spring practices during the first week on Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
