Where does the #Bills’ roster rank in terms of age in the NFL?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Bills are a team poised to be a Super Bowl contender in 2021. Something that helps a team with such lofty goals is experience.

Buffalo has just that.

Following the team’s final roster construction last week, the Bills have the seventh-oldest roster in the entire NFL. That number comes via Spotrac.

Overall, the Bears clock in as the oldest roster in the NFL with an average age of 27.15. The Bills sit at an average of 26.68.

On the flip side, the Jets slide in as the youngest team entering 2021. Their average age is 25.38 years old.

In terms of the rest of the AFC East, the Patriots nearly have a roster as old as the Bills. The Pats’ average age of 26.81 clocks in as the sixth-oldest.

Rounding out the division, the Dolphins have the 22nd oldest roster at 26.08 years old.

What’s worth noting on Buffalo is context.

While, from top to bottom, the Bills do have an older roster. Many of their players in key spots, such as quarterback Josh Allen (25) and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (23), are still very young.

Because of that, the Bills could be set to compete for both the short and long term.

What could a potential Cam Robinson extension look like?

If the Jaguars decided to sign Robinson to an extension, what could that deal look like?

It came as a bit of a surprise when Jacksonville decided to place the franchise tag on fifth-year offensive tackle Cam Robinson. Though he’s far from a bad starter, injuries have limited him throughout his career, and his play when healthy didn’t exactly justify the $13.8 million the Jaguars are on the hook for paying him in 2021.

Still, finding a starting-caliber tackle is one of the most difficult tasks in football, and with a rookie quarterback in Trevor Lawrence to protect, the Jags didn’t have much of a choice other than to keep Robinson around for at least one more season. He’s likely not part of the team’s plans beyond this season, with either 2021 second-round pick Walker Little or someone else expected to take over in 2022.

But if Robinson can stay healthy and take a step forward this season, those plans could change. If the Jaguars decided to sign him to an extension, what could that deal look like? Spotrac estimates Robinson’s market value as being $11.3 million per year, a salary that would rank just 19th among left tackles in the league. It also predicts that an extension for Robinson would be for four years.

Spotrac arrived at this number by making statistical and contractual comparisons, and the players deemed most comparable to Robinson are Taylor Lewan, Taylor Decker, Dion Dawkins, and Donovan Smith. All of those players except Smith signed extensions of at least four years.

This would be a more affordable deal for the Jags than what they’re giving him this year, but it would still be the team’s third-most expensive deal overall. Unless Robinson’s play improves significantly, the Jags will probably look to go in a different direction. And if he does make a considerable improvement, any extension would likely need to be more in line with what the league’s top tackles are making. Because of that, it seems like this deal wouldn’t ever come to fruition.

Fantasy football: Players entering a contract year in 2021

Which players may have added incentive this season?

While simply entering a contract year is not a guarantee of increased fantasy football production, gamers look for any extra on-field motivation to put their fake squads over the top.

The key when evaluating such data is to treat it as another piece of the puzzle and not get too caught up in this extra info. This offseason, largely due to COVID-19 creating a decrease in the salary cap, more free agents opted for one-year deals than usual. Therefore, an increase in players with greater focus on striking a monster payday following the upcoming campaign is at what could be an all-time high as they’ll return to the market in less than a calendar year.

The data is based on USA TODAY Sports’ partner Spotrac.com’s free-agent charts.

Notes: All notable players listed below will be unrestricted free agents as of March 2022. Ages reflect how old the player will be upon the opening free agency. Players in bold font are considered to have the most to gain from a strong season.

Dan Bailey’s agent on Vikings: ‘No bad blood from either side’

Minnesota released kicker Dan Bailey on Tuesday, right before he was supposed to have $1.8 million guaranteed for the 2021 season.

The woes for the Vikings at the kicker position continue.

Minnesota released kicker Dan Bailey on Tuesday, right before he was supposed to have $1.8 million guaranteed for the 2021 season.

After the release, Bailey’s again had this to say via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press:

Bailey will likely get an opportunity somewhere to at least compete for a job. After hitting 93.8% of his field goals in 2019, Bailey struggled mightily in 2020, hitting just 68.2% of his field goals and 88.2% of his extra points.

Bailey made $4.25 million last season with the Vikings and has made $21.6 million in his career via Spotrac.

Spotrac predicts Kenyan Drake’s free agency landing spot and contract details

Kenyan Drake may be on the move before the 2021 season if he doesn’t re-sign with the Cardinals. Spotrac guesses where he might land.

One of the top websites for reporting on contracts, Spotrac, has released their predictions for big-name free agents in the 2021 offseason.

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac has made his predictions, and one of them include a former Alabama running back.

Kenyan Drake has had an interesting time in the NFL, despite still having a young career. After beginning his career in Miami, then being traded to Arizona, Drake is likely going to be on the move again.

Ginnitti believes Drake could be heading back to the AFC East, but to be with the New York Jets on a two-year, $10 million deal.

“Drake had a chance to grab hold of the #1 role in ARZ on a transition tag in 2020, but failed to do so. He’s a good addition to a multi-RB situation, but not at top dollar.”

There is still a chance Drake re-signs with Arizona, but all signs point to him exploring free agency and seeing what’s offered to him.

Brandon Beane has completely flipped Bills’ dead cap situation

Buffalo Bills dead cap situation according to Spotrac heading into 2020 NFL season.

In just a few short seasons, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has entirely revamped the team’s salary cap situation. Spotrac recently updated the dead cap space totals for every NFL team and displays just that.

The Bills currently have $1.04 million in dead cap space against their salary cap. That’s the second-lowest total in the NFL. Only the Buccaneers have less with $88.2 thousand.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Panthers currently have the most dead cap against their salary cap in the league at a massive $48.1M. The next closest team is the Jaguars at $38M.

Those two help put the work Beane and the Bills have done into focus.

When Beane and head coach Sean McDermott moved into their positions with the Bills in 2017, the two started cleaning house. Often touting “culture” in their locker room, high-profile players such as receiver Sammy Watkins and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus were moved out. But such players aren’t just high-profile, they’re costly, too.

While off the team’s roster, the Bills still have to take on dead cap for moving these players. The club’s front office placed a bunch of that burden on the team’s salary cap during the 2018 season.

Heading into that season, the Bills had near $50 million in dead cap against the team’s cap. The next closest team was the Cowboys, half of that near $25M. That caused the Bills to fall to a 6-10 record after earning a playoff berth the year prior. But in 2019 when things loosened up, as things were once again during the current offseason, Buffalo made their way back to the postseason. The club is poised to make it back-to-back trips in 2020.

Looking at the Bills’ current dead cap situation through the lens of 2018’s roster, that’s a big change in a relatively quick manner.

For those wondering, the Bills currently have $19.4M in overall salary cap space, ranking Buffalo at the 12th most space overall in the league.
