Scott Van Pelt apologizes after he lost his voice mid-SportsCenter

Get well soon, SVP!

I’ve often wondered just how broadcasters are able to keep their voices so strong when they have to speak on air for hours and hours, then have to repeat that so many times a year.

But, voices go out, sometimes for no reason at all. That appeared to be what happened to Scott Van Pelt on Wednesday night when he hosted the late edition of SportsCenter.

As you’ll see below, so many people noted SVP struggling on the air, something he acknowledged right up front before tweeting and apologizing about the “bizarre deal” of how his voice just stopped working.

He got some love from Twitter:

Get well soon, SVP!

Bills’ Dion Dawkins shared valuable insight into the team’s unyielding support of Damar Hamlin

The Bills are staying focused on their friend and teammate Damar Hamlin.

As the sports world continues its outpouring of support and hope for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, one of his teammates has offered insight into how the organization is processing the situation.

Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins appeared on SportsCenter and discussed how the team is only focused on Hamlin. He said that they are channeling all the energy they have in to supporting those around Hamlin, including those on the Bills roster that are closest to him.

While Dawkins acknowledges that their work as NFL players will continue, their efforts to support Hamlin’s family and friends will remain paramount.

The Bills did get “a guardedly optimistic update” about Hamlin’s condition on Tuesday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. While he remains in critical condition at UC Medical Center, Hamlin’s uncle Dorrian Glenn has shared that his nephew’s breathing has improved and has “a chance to recover.”

We all continue to keep Hamlin in our constant thoughts in prayers and hope for a swift, full recovery.

Dante Moore trending to West coast school as announcement day is here

Is he off to the West coast?

The Irish and their courtship of Michigan star quarterback [autotag]Dante Moore[/autotag] has been documented very well. For Moore, his recruiting journey seems to be coming to an end as he will make his announcement in just a few hours on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Notre Dame was firmly in the mix, even the perceived leader but when 2024 Michigan quarterback [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] made his verbal to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] and the Irish, it seemed like Moore took that as a sign that the Irish were moving on. According to many insiders, it seems like Moore will choose Oregon at 12:45pm EST when he makes his selection official.

It is a loss for the Irish, but in the grand scheme of recruiting it might not be a big one. Yes, it would have been very nice to have both Moore and Carr in the same room, but the probability that the loser of the starting job transfer would be high, especially in this era.

We will all soon find out where Moore is headed, even if it’s not a bit South and much further West.

29 classic ‘This is SportsCenter’ commercials you need to watch again

Some classics you may have forgotten!

Though so much time has passed since the heyday of This is SportsCenter commercials promoting ESPN’s flagship show and the need to tune in to see all the sports highlights it provides, the ads live on.

And as someone who will still quote, “Jimmy Key, what’s he, like, 45? I could hit him,” I figured it was a good time to help the world remember some of the all-time best commercials that are classics (and we ranked them back in 2017!).

So here are a bunch of This is SportsCenter ads, many of which I bet you haven’t watched in a long time, but that you should DEFINITELY rewatch:

Watch: Notre Dame snaps bowl losing streak in 2008 Hawaii Bowl

Need a sports fix this Christmas Eve?

In case you haven’t heard, there will be no live sports this Christmas Eve. The one event that was supposed to take place, the Hawaii Bowl between Hawaii and Memphis, has been canceled after the Rainbow Warriors’ roster was ravaged by injuries, transfers and COVID-19. Those who are hungry for this particular bowl will have to wait another year.

However, if you must watch the bowl that takes places in the Aloha State, check out SportsCenter highlights of the 2008 edition between the Warriors and Notre Dame. Going in, the Irish had not won a bowl since the 1994 Cotton Bowl. Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate ended that drought by setting program bowl records in a 49-21 victory. The game also was notable for the Irish wearing last names on the back of their jerseys and Michael Floyd’s helmet losing a bit of the iconic gold paint.

After you watch these highlights, go have a safe and happy holiday with whoever it is you care about if you can:

Desmond Howard: ‘It feels like Clemson is 3-7’

ESPN analyst Desmond Howard picked the Clemson-Wake Forest game as the matchup he wanted to see the most on Saturday during his appearance on SportsCenter.

“The matchup that I am looking forward to today is in the ACC.  It is Wake Forest against Clemson.  Now you are looking at a Wake Forest team that is still undefeated in the conference even though they lost to UNC.  You figure that one out.  But listen Sam Hartman is still playing at a high level,” said Howard.

What did Howard have to say about the Tigers?

“But this Clemson team.  They are 7-3 but it feels like they are 3-7.  They are like the forgotten team in the ACC.  This is going to be an incredible matchup.  It is in Clemson.  I want to see if they can get after Sam Hartman and more importantly can Clemson move the ball on this porous Deacon defense,” said Howard.

Drake might have just dropped a release date for ‘Certified Lover Boy’ on ESPN’s Sportscenter

This is WILD

We’ve all been waiting since the beginning of the year for Drake’s newest album, Certified Lover Boy, to drop.

It was supposed to come at the beginning of the year but he tore his ACL which, coincidentally, may or may not have happened while he was trying to guard Steph Curry.

Regardless, that delayed the album. And all we’ve been getting is featured verses and an EP full of singles since then. The anticipation is still building up.

But good news is finally here. We may actually be getting the album soon if this hacked spot on Sportscenter’s morning broadcast is any indication.

On Friday morning before the rundown of the show, there appeared to be a cut with someone saying something in a distorted voice holding a sign that said “CLB, September 3.”

It was wild.

Nothing is confirmed, obviously. But if this holds true? That’s a pretty cool way to roll out an album. It’s not surprising at all he’d take this route — I mean, he shot an entire video at Nike’s headquarters.

Regardless, let’s hope this album comes soon. We’re tired of waiting.

Why did Aaron Rodgers break his silence on SportsCenter?

Why did Aaron Rodgers appear on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” Monday night?

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has spoken.

Don’t get all in an uproar. the NFL great did not say anything about his current situation. He made an appearance on ESPN “SportsCenter” Monday night as it was host Kenny Mayne’s final show.

So, what did Rodgers say?

And Mayne got in a classic parting shot — in jest — as he closed the interview. Mayne said Rodgers suggested he get into cryptocurrency, he lost his job and you can list to the rest below:

ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt owes debt to Justin Thomas for Alabama basketball beating Maryland

ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt owes debt to Justin Thomas after Alabama basketball defeated Maryland in the NCAA Tournament.

ESPN broadcaster Scott Van Pelt went to Maryland.

Professional golfer Justin Thomas went to Alabama.

So when Thomas appeared on “SportsCenter” with Van Pelt the night that the NCAA Tournament bracket was chosen, Van Pelt noted that Maryland and Alabama could play in the second round. The two joked about a wager on the potential game that involved Thomas’ $2.7 million purse for winning The Players Championship.

Alabama and Maryland ended up meeting Monday night in the round of 32. Alabama won comfortably, 96-77.

Van Pelt tweeted Monday night during the game, “I’m going to owe @JustinThomas34 2.7”

They settled on something more reasonable — lunch at The Masters.

Thomas replied to Van Pelt on Tuesday, “:) it’s ok. The win was enough for me. Buy me lunch at @TheMasters we’ll call it even.”

The Masters is scheduled to take place April 8-11.

Van Pelt discussed the wager on his podcast “SVPod” on Tuesday.

“I appreciate him allowing me to wiggle off the hook there,” Van Pelt said. “I sent him a text that said, ‘Hey man, do you take checks?’ And he said, ‘I just hope we can keep it going.'”

Van Pelt then compared Alabama’s dominating win against Maryland to professional golf and the tough task of following up a great performance with another one.

“You see somebody shoot 64 in a round on Thursday, one of the hardest things on the PGA Tour to do is shoot another great score the next day,” Van Pelt said. “Same person, same course. Why don’t you, why can’t you go shoot a great score the next day. Nobody has a really great explanation for it.

“Now in basketball, clearly, playing Maryland and playing UCLA, it’s a different team,” Van Pelt added. “But you’re the same team, and so, why would you maybe not shoot it as well the next game. Well, because sports are odd. This tournament is a one-off. You get 40 minutes on the clock. What can you do with those 40 minutes?”

Alabama is scheduled to face UCLA in the Sweet 16 on Sunday, March 28 at 7:15 p.m. ET.
