Hopefully, this game will be the start of a new winning streak for Kansas City as the defending Super Bowl champions look to finish their 2024 regular season campaign on a high note.

The Chiefs came into this matchup with a 9-1 record, and seemed to have an advantage over Carolina on paper on both sides of the ball. Patrick Mahomes led Kansas City to a touchdown on the game’s first drive, and the Chiefs’ defense was able to hold the Panthers to field goals early in the matchup.

Despite expectations of an easy win things came down to the wire for Kansas City, which has become something of a theme for the Chiefs recently.

Today’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers delivered several of the electric plays that fans have come to expect from the defending Super Bowl champions.

Kansas City’s bounce-back effort against Carolina resulted in a much-needed win after the Chiefs lost to the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.

The Panthers could not contain Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense on the game’s final drive, and a last-second field goal by kicker Spencer Shrader sealed a 30-27 for the Chiefs.

Mahomes didn’t neglect his receivers against Carolina and threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Backup tight end Noah Gray was on the receiving end of two touchdown passes from Mahomes, and veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins scored the third.

The Chiefs’ defense held its own against the Panthers’ surging air attack. Defensive back Nazeeh Johnson made his presence felt in the game and led Kansas City’s defense with eight combined tackles.

There have not been many good football decisions around New York football in 2024. Spencer Shrader arguably made the best one.

The kicker had the choice of remaining a New York Jets — elevated from practice squad — or signing with the Kansas City Chiefs to replace the injured Harrison Butker for at least four games.

Shrader chose the Super Bowl champs and on Sunday  kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired to life the Chiefs over the Carolina Panthers.

It was the first game-winning kick of Shrader’s NFL career.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 12 matchup against the Carolina Panthers made for intriguing television on Sunday afternoon.

Though the game wasn’t expected to be close, Carolina was ultimately defeated when Kansas City drove downfield to get kicker Spencer Shrader in range to kick a last-second field goal.

The Panthers’ defense did its best to keep up with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-octane offense late in the game but ultimately crumbled when the reigning Super Bowl MVP took the field for a final drive with the score tied at 27 points.

When Mahomes broke off a 33-yard run to get Kansas City near the red zone, it only took a few simple plays to set up Shrader for a chip-shot game-winner.

Shrader’s aim was true when he booted his 31-yard field goal try, and the Chiefs secured their tenth win of the season when the ball sailed through the uprights at Bank of America Stadium.

With its victory over the Panthers in Week 12, Kansas City will maintain its lead for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

The Kansas City Chiefs were in scramble mode last week ahead of their Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills. Harrison Butker’s injury and immediate placement on injured reserve led to the signing of rookie Spencer Shrader, as special teams coordinator Dave Toub explained the decision to reporters on Thursday.

“Every year, we rate all the kickers coming out. A lot like (Harrison) Butker, he (Spencer Shrader) was our number one guy coming out; we had him number one on our list,” said Toub. “He was a guy obviously we targeted, we looked at, and we liked him early, and then he was on the practice squad, so we took a shot and got him. We’re happy we got him. He’s got a strong leg. We haven’t seen a lot of him but in practice, he’s looked really good.”

Shrader is on his third team since going undrafted in April. He filled in for the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets before being signed off their practice squad last week. He didn’t have a field goal attempt with the Chiefs in Week 11 but did connect on his extra-point attempts.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has managed to keep his team undefeated through numerous injuries and has added another starter to the growing list. The veteran coach announced to reporters on Friday the status of Harrison Butker after news broke on Thursday that the kicker will be placed on injured reserve.

“Alright, as far as the injuries go, (Harrison) Butker is the main one there. He did this in practice, tried it on Thursday and tried to warm up and get going and then wasn’t able to do it. Then, we took care of that.” said Reid. “Then, it was confirmed what it was, and so we – he ended up having surgery this morning.”

Butker’s injury is his meniscus, and he posted on social media that the surgery was successful early Friday morning. Reid also confirmed that he should be able to return this season once he’s healed from the procedure.

“So, the surgery was successful. We’ll see how it all goes, time-wise. I mean, I can’t tell you time-wise, but within that, we brought Spencer Shrader in to do the kicking,” Reid said. “He’s a young guy, so his resume isn’t long, but the ones he’s had, he’s done a nice job with, and he felt comfortable with that, along with Dave Toub, so we invite him in, and he can, you can do the kicking going forward here until but is able to return.”

Reid is confident in Butker’s replacement. Shrader played in Week 10 for the New York Jets and successfully replaced their injured kicker.

“He’s got a very strong leg, and he’s done well. “said Reid. “They used him, obviously elevated him at the Jets, so they had a couple of kickers there, and obviously they favored him.”

The Chiefs face the Buffalo Bills in a crucial AFC rivalry matchup this Sunday, which could affect their postseason seeding.

#Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave fans an update on his condition in a post to Twitter after he underwent a surgical procedure this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without Harrison Butker for at least four games after the veteran kicker was placed on the defending Super Bowl champions’ injured reserve list.

Butker is dealing with a knee injury and is set to be replaced by rookie boot Spencer Shrader, who was signed off of the New York Jets’ practice squad by Kansas City on Thursday.

The exact nature of Butker’s injury remains unclear, but he underwent a surgical procedure this week to fix the knee issue.

On Friday morning, Butker took to Twitter to let fans know that the surgery he had on his knee was a success:

 

Though Butker isn’t expected to miss the rest of the season due to this latest setback, his absence is something to watch over the next few weeks as the Chiefs look to keep their undefeated record intact.

Injuries continue to pile up for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into their Week 11 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

On Thursday, it was revealed that the defending Super Bowl champions intend to place star kicker Harrison Butker on their injured reserve list.

Butker is said to have a knee injury, but the exact nature of his condition is unclear.

The veteran kicker did not appear on Kansas City’s injury report on Wednesday.

As a result of Butker’s injury, the Chiefs are reportedly signing rookie kicker Spencer Shrader off of the New York Jets’ practice squad.

Shrader played at the University of South Florida and Notre Dame as a collegian and signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent after the 2024 NFL draft.

 

Though Kansas City’s special teams unit will need to adjust its approach with Butker on the sideline, Shrader should prove to be a worthy addition to the Chiefs’ roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without another key player for an extended period due to injury.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are signing kicker Spencer Shrader off the New York Jets practice squad and placing kicker Harrison Butker on injured reserve due to a knee injury. Butker, who initially wasn’t on the radar of any significant injury concerns earlier in the week, was announced as limited in Thursday’s practice with a left knee injury.

The veteran kicker will miss at least the next four games due to the injured reserve designation. Through nine regular-season games, Butker has connected 18-for-20 on field-goal attempts and 21-for-22 on extra-point tries. He notably had an uncharacteristic moment in the fourth quarter of the Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos, pushing the kickoff out of bounds, giving the opponents excellent field position for the final drive.

The Chiefs are reportedly adding kicker Shrader from the Jets practice squad; he played in New York’s Week 10 game against the Arizona Cardinals, connecting on both field-goal attempts. He was relegated to the practice squad after regular Jets starter Greg Zuerlein was cleared to return from injured reserve.
