‘Squid Game’ creator responds to LeBron criticism by ripping ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

Zing!

LeBron James is among the many, many viewers who took in Squid Game, the Netflix hit that’s all kind of buzzy around the interwebs.

But when asked about the series by a reporter, James responded that he wasn’t pleased with the ending. I’m not sure if that’s a widely-shared opinion since I haven’t seen it yet — I promise, I’m starting soon! — but that’s what he said.

That criticism got back to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who came right back at James by taking a shot at Space Jam: A New Legacy starring James and the Loony Tunes crew.

Here’s what he said, via The Guardian:

Hwang giggles from Seoul, before referencing one of James’s film career highlights. “Have you seen Space Jam 2?” he asks. Not all the way through, I reply. “LeBron James is cool and can say what he wants. I respect that. I’m very thankful he watched the whole series. But I wouldn’t change my ending. That’s my ending. If he has his own ending that would satisfy him, maybe he could make his own sequel. I’ll check it out and maybe send him a message saying, ‘I liked your whole show, except the ending.’”

Zing! James saw what was said and was amused:

No matter how weird ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ looks, we’re still going to watch because LeBron

Of course we’re going to watch.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Charles Curtis is filling in for Andy Nesbitt.

I was 14 years old when the first Space Jam hit theaters, and like every NBA fan (who happened to also love the Loony Tunes when I was younger), I had to go to the theaters to see it.

I knew it was perhaps made for a moviegoer who was younger, but it didn’t matter. Michael Jordan was in it. I had to go see the GOAT acting with Bugs and the gang. Could the world’s most talented athlete at the time carry a movie with some cartoons and Bill Murray?

He could. And he was good!

On Thursday, we saw the latest clip from Space Jam: A New Legacy, in which Porky Pig raps. It’s … not great. And the plot of the movie is pretty wild.

But none of that matters.

This is LeBron James we’re talking about. And at least with him, we know he can act: back in 2016, I named him the greatest athlete playing himself in a movie thanks to Trainwreck. He was darn funny, charismatic, and the gag reels showed he cracked up Bill Hader, who is an extremely funny person.

So, yeah. You’re going to watch the new Space Jam. And while I’m sure the movie will produce some jokes and memes and criticisms, I’m betting we’ll still come out of it saying, “Man, LeBron can do it all.”

Quick hits: The Olympics are coming!! … NIL rules are in effect … Worst NFL uniforms … and more.

— With the Tokyo Olympics coming up later this month, we’re spotlighting one athlete a day until the opening ceremonies. First up is swimming superstar Katie Ledecky.

— The NCAA NIL policies are now in effect, and Bo Nix immediately got a deal. Meanwhile, lots of people want to see Reggie Bush get his Heisman Trophy back, something he addressed on Twitter.

— Here are the worst uniforms worn by every NFL team.

— One of the funniest Twitter threads you’ll see stars a reporter who traveled from Pittsburgh to New York to see Shohei Ohtani … but the pitcher/slugger lasted for just one inning.

Clips from ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ make the movie look unspeakably bad

How is this helping?

It’s always difficult — if not impossible — to judge an entire movie from a few social media clips or a trailer, but they can go a long way towards setting expectations.

So, with that in mind, you should probably have your bar for Space Jam: A New Legacy set at ground level.

We’re just about two weeks away from the debut of a movie that LeBron James has long looked forward to being a part of, and let’s just say that the marketing team around the film isn’t doing James any favors.

From the absolutely incoherent plot to, well, these latest social media clips, it’ll honestly be a shock if this film is even watchable.

Like, what is going on here …

LeBron James made a cryptic rabbit tweet and everyone made space jam jokes

LeBron James’ cryptic tweet backfired into a joke

LeBron James is the king of cryptic social media posts. He’s always got a good, passive-aggressive heater in the tuck.

Remember that time he gave us “mood” with the Arthur fist? Or how about that weird “Fit IN” tweet? And that time when he just unfollowed the Cavs for no good reason, really? Good times.

Cryptic LeBron is back. He let another one fly on Friday after reports surfaced about him missing yet another game due to him tweaking his ankle again after returning last week.

Clearly, it’s been a pretty rough month for James. So he let off some steam with this tweet.

What does it mean? Is he the rabbit with the gun? Or is he the hunter trying to catch the rabbit? Was it all really fun and games before? We don’t know.

And since we don’t know, now is as good a time as ever to make Space Jam jokes about a tweet with a rabbit in it. So that’s what Twitter did — they made Space Jam jokes. And they were incredible.

Twitter, man. It’s the best.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Trailer: LeBron and Bugs vs. the ‘Goon Squad’

The first full trailer for the upcoming Space Jam movie with LeBron James debuted on Saturday morning.

While LeBron James continues to recover from his high ankle sprain and his Los Angeles Lakers fight to stay high in the standings without him, James had another off-court milestone. On Saturday morning, Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for LeBron’s “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” his biggest movie project yet as an actor.

In the trailer, the audience finally gets a chance to see what the actual story will be, after years of script rewrites and reports about what the movie is about. You can see the full trailer below, with LeBron James falling through the Warner Bros. “serververse” to save his son. James also has to finish the “Goon Squad,” which is likely where the other NBA and WNBA players will come in.

As fans have noted online after watching the trailer, it included one incredible reference to an iconic moment in LeBron’s career, his dunk trailing Dwyane Wade from their first year together on the Miami Heat.

The July 16 release date is projected to be during the 2021 NBA Finals, so James could potentially be playing in the Finals again while his blockbuster movie debuts.

The new plot details from LeBron’s ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ sound wild

This sounds like a thrill ride.

When we first heard some details about the plot of Space Jam: A New Legacy, the LeBron James and Bugs Bunny flick that’s a sequel of sorts to the Michael Jordan classic, it sounded pretty awesome: James’s son Dom is being held captive by “rogue AI,” so the Los Angeles Lakers star has to get him with the help of the Tune Squad.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have a lot more detail, and it sounds like a wild thrill ride that will apparently include incorporating some other Warner Bros. movies into this one. Here’s a bunch about what you’ll see:

Playing a heightened version of himself, James struggles to relate to [Cedric] Joe’s Dom, who’s much more interested in creating games than playing them. When Dom’s tech skills draw the attention of a CGI humanoid named Al G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), the father-son duo get sucked into the Warner 3000 entertainment “Server-verse,” with the A.I. kidnapping Dom in the hopes of stealing some of the King’s followers (IRL he has about 80 million on Instagram). Cheadle doesn’t consider Al G a bad guy (what bad guy does?), but rather “an A.I. with a chip on his shoulder,” says the MCU veteran.

Not wild enough for you? How about this?

When James is sucked into the WB server, he drifts through some of the studio’s most famous films to track down his underdog squad. “It was a tricky thing just in terms of what you may want, like, ‘Oh my God, look, there’s Mad Max, and there’s Casablanca!'” Lee explains. (James also mentioned The Matrix and Wonder Woman as part of the WB look back, though no title is confirmed yet.) In addition to entering these worlds, “we have a lot of the WB characters at the game, watching like they do at Rucker Park,” [director Malcolm D.] Lee says, referencing the historic NYC street court.

And here’s a first look thanks to EW and James:

OK, I’m in. This sounds like fun.

The ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ plot actually sounds pretty awesome

This sounds fun.

We finally have a plot summary for Space Jam 2, and you know what? It sounds pretty great!

Why do I sound so surprised? Well, the original was a lot of fun, but how do you get LeBron James to do it as well or better than Michael Jordan with Bugs and the Tune Squad?

The answer is: you don’t try to do what the original did and you try something similar but new, just like the new uniforms that we saw earlier this year.

Here’s the summary, which was part of a tie-in with Microsoft (see below) that was released on Monday:

In this film, basketball champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny. When James and his young son Dom – who dreams of being a video game developer – are trapped in a digital space by a rogue AI, James must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the AI’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before.

James and Bugs promoted the new film on Instagram and the tie-in with Microsoft and Xbox, in which fans can submit their own ideas for a Space Jam: A New Legacy video game. Two winning ideas will be turned into arcade-style games and win a bunch of prizes.

HBO Max announces it will have Space Jam 2 release on July 16, 2021

HBO Max announced on Thursday that their new same-day release features will include Space Jam 2.

Fans who are awaiting the debut of next summer’s “Space Jam 2” starring LeBron James will be able to watch it from the comfort of their own homes, so long as they are HBO Max subscribers.

HBO Max announced on Thursday that they will have same day box office releases on their service starting on Christmas Day and through 2021, including the release of the “Space Jam 2.” The remake of the legendary Michael Jordan-Looney Tunes movie starring LeBron James and Don Cheadle will release on the app on July 16, the same day that it’s scheduled to release in movie theaters. HBO, of course, is owned by Warner Bros.

The announcement from Warner Bros. and HBO is a major one for the movie industry as the pandemic has kept crowds small or realistically non-existent for movie theaters. Until there is some level of control with the virus, movies, especially blockbusters like ‘Space Jam 2,’ will have to find success on the small screen.

Leak: ‘Space Jam 2’ to include characters outside of the Looney Toons

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James could be trying to dunk on Pennywise and The Joker, according to a new Space Jam 2 leak.

LeBron James throwing the ball on the break to Harry Potter for a dunk on The Joker? Well, while none of the details are confirmed, according to the latest leaks from the ‘Space Jam 2’ production, pretty much any character from the Warner Bros. universe could pop into the remake of the 1996 classic starring Michael Jordan.

According to leaks that came out from ScreenGeek.net and screenwriter Ben Mekler, the new ‘Space Jam’ will take place in a multi-verse, where characters from other Warner Bros. properties will be popping up, in addition the Looney Toons. Some leaks have included Pennywise from the IT movie, The Joker, The Mask, and The Wicked Witch of West.

LeBron, Bugs Bunny, and the other basketball stars from the WNBA and the NBA will have some pretty vicious villains that they have to take down in the upcoming ‘Space Jam 2.’ I, for one, cannot wait to see what appears to be an incredibly bonkers premise.

The old ‘Space Jam’ jerseys are better than the new ones, but we’re still excited for LeBron’s movie

Classic Tune Squad unis > LeBron’s Tune Squad unis.

There are times when nostalgia is overblown, when we all love throwback uniforms and remakes of old movies and TV series because they’re something we’re familiar with.

But when it comes to the new Space Jam: A New Legacy uniforms LeBron James will wear — which we got to see on Monday night — in the sequel to the Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny flick, the original Tune Squad unis are better.

A twelve-second clip revealed James wearing a kit that had teal on one side and the Looney Tunes circles (the ones Porky Pig uses to say “That’s all folks!”) splashed across them. There’s a lot going on here, to be honest:

It’s a take on the originals, with those same circles and the blue “Tune Squad” name on the center of a mostly white uni:

Simple and understated. I’m not saying James’ movie had to lift them directly, but if we’re comparing the two, it’s MJ > James.

All of that said, I’m excited to see James’ movie, mostly to see him act with cartoons.
