The MultiVersus roster expands today …

The MultiVersus roster expands today with the news that LeBron James, Rick Sanchez, and Morty Smith are stepping into the ring. King James joins the roster on July 26, the launch of the open beta, as the version of himself that appeared in Space Jam: A New Legacy. That means he’s rocking his Toon Squad jersey and unleashing all manner of over-the-top basketball moves.

But the real key to James’ …

But the real key to James’ billion-dollar fortune: He’s been more than just a pitchman. James has long structured deals to give him equity in brands he partners with, giving him a cut of the upside instead of a quick paycheck. In 2015, James walked away from an endorsement agreement with McDonald’s, worth an estimated $15 million over four years, to instead gamble on the fast-growing Blaze Pizza chain, where he’s an investor. He’s taken equity in brands like smart gym-maker Tonal and rideshare giant Lyft as well. Then there’s SpringHill, the TV and movie production outfit built by James and business partner Maverick Carter. Last October, outside investors including Boston Red Sox owner Fenway Sports Group and Epic Games bought into the venture–which helped produce the $163 million (worldwide box office gross) Space Jam: A New Legacy and HBO documentary What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali–at a $725 million valuation. James, of course, remains the biggest shareholder.

LeBron James gets worst actor Razzie award

Space Jam: A New Legacy and star LeBron James became part of the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies traditionally celebrate the worst coming out of Hollywood on the eve of the Oscar Awards. The Los Angeles Lakers star himself, taking over from Michael Jordan in the Space James sequel, was named worst actor and worst screen couple along with any cartoon character of Warner Bros, as announced On Razzies.com. The movie was labeled as the worst remake, rip-off or sequel.

‘Squid Game’ creator responds to LeBron criticism by ripping ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

Zing!

LeBron James is among the many, many viewers who took in Squid Game, the Netflix hit that’s all kind of buzzy around the interwebs.

But when asked about the series by a reporter, James responded that he wasn’t pleased with the ending. I’m not sure if that’s a widely-shared opinion since I haven’t seen it yet — I promise, I’m starting soon! — but that’s what he said.

That criticism got back to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who came right back at James by taking a shot at Space Jam: A New Legacy starring James and the Loony Tunes crew.

Here’s what he said, via The Guardian:

Hwang giggles from Seoul, before referencing one of James’s film career highlights. “Have you seen Space Jam 2?” he asks. Not all the way through, I reply. “LeBron James is cool and can say what he wants. I respect that. I’m very thankful he watched the whole series. But I wouldn’t change my ending. That’s my ending. If he has his own ending that would satisfy him, maybe he could make his own sequel. I’ll check it out and maybe send him a message saying, ‘I liked your whole show, except the ending.’”

Zing! James saw what was said and was amused:

NBA Twitter reacts to Klay Thompson with the ‘Goon Squad’ in ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

Following the premiere of “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” NBA fans across Twitter chimed in with reactions to Klay Thompson’s “Wet-Fire” character in the movie.

*** Warning: The following post contains spoilers for “Space Jam: A New Legacy” ***

For the first time in two seasons, basketball fans got to see Klay Thompson lace up for a game. Yet, it wasn’t in the Bay Area at Chase Center. On Friday, the Golden State Warriors shooting guard made an appearance in the LeBron James-led movie, “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

Instead of his blue and gold Golden State jersey, Thompson suited up alongside Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard, Los Angeles Sparks guard Nneka Ogwumike and Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi with the “Goon Squad.”

As the character “Wet-Fire,” Thompson and the Goon Squad’s cast of NBA and WNBA All-Stars challenged James, Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes in the “Server-Verse.”

While all the players for the Goon Squad were given unique powers, Thompson’s Wet-Fire character would switch back and forth from a water-based player to a fiery flame-themed hooper.

Following the premiere of Space Jam: A New Legacy, fans across social media chimed in with reactions to Thompson’s character in the movie.
