LeBron James responds to criticism over “Space Jam: A New Legacy”

LeBron James had a short but sweet message in response to critics’ ratings of “Space Jam: A New Legacy”.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” was officially released in theaters Friday, and many have taken the opportunity to watch LeBron James star in the second segment of the iconic “Space Jam” that Michael Jordan starred in.

It’s the first movie James has ever had a leading role in as he teams up with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes squad to win a basketball game in order to save his son.

However, the movie has received criticism for not living up to the first installment, and the ratings on various sites are lower than the originals.

In spite of those downfalls, James’ Space Jam earned top acknowledgments in the box office department, via Deadline:

“Even with Space Jam: A New Legacy in homes on HBO Max, Warner Bros. proves again that when they shell out on TV spots, they can open the film in movie theaters to a solid number, and in this case it was the best 3-day we’ve seen for a family film during the pandemic with $31.65M. That’s also the best for Warner Bros. beating Godzilla vs. Kong‘s big Easter opening of $31.625M by a smidge.”

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” also topped Marvel’s “Black Widow” — in its second week in theaters — for the No. 1 spot, which isn’t easy to do given it being the most recent Marvel movie to hit theaters since “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

James posted the article on his Twitter with a message to the critics:

The opposite side of the low ratings are spectators saying this film is specifically targeted towards children and a family audience, so rating it as an adult movie is unfair.

Nonetheless, as James said in his response, and just like he does on the court, the numbers will back it up.

LeBron James discusses parallels of real life and Tune Squad life in ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’

LeBron James discussed how real life and Tune Squad life came together in ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’.

With LeBron James’ new movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy” releasing in about a month, there is plenty of intrigue about James’ role in the movie.

Other NBA and WNBA players like Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Diana Taurasi and more are featured in the film, but the premise focuses on James’ character and the importance of family.

James is all about family, which is evident in the way he supports his sons as they grow up in the world.

In a promotional interview for the movie, James discussed the parallels between real life and life as a Tune Squad member:

“This is a fictional version of myself but it’s also kind of who I am as well. What works so well with the character is I was able to implement a lot of the things I actually do when the camera’s not on…For me, to able to produce a movie like this but also to be able to star in a movie like this is very humbling for me, just knowing where I come from.”

James shared the interview on Twitter and reacted to it as well:

Also making its debut in the film is the new Nike LeBron 19 shoe, which James dons throughout the game. He’ll also wear No. 6 on his Tune Squad jersey, which he’ll switch to when next season tips off.

The switch from No. 23 could result in James having four retired jerseys, which would be the first time in NBA history a player has had that many jerseys in the rafters.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Trailer: LeBron and Bugs vs. the ‘Goon Squad’

The first full trailer for the upcoming Space Jam movie with LeBron James debuted on Saturday morning.

While LeBron James continues to recover from his high ankle sprain and his Los Angeles Lakers fight to stay high in the standings without him, James had another off-court milestone. On Saturday morning, Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for LeBron’s “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” his biggest movie project yet as an actor.

In the trailer, the audience finally gets a chance to see what the actual story will be, after years of script rewrites and reports about what the movie is about. You can see the full trailer below, with LeBron James falling through the Warner Bros. “serververse” to save his son. James also has to finish the “Goon Squad,” which is likely where the other NBA and WNBA players will come in.

As fans have noted online after watching the trailer, it included one incredible reference to an iconic moment in LeBron’s career, his dunk trailing Dwyane Wade from their first year together on the Miami Heat.

The July 16 release date is projected to be during the 2021 NBA Finals, so James could potentially be playing in the Finals again while his blockbuster movie debuts.

LeBron James, Looney Toons adorn Entertainment Weekly cover

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly for “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

No matter what happens with the Los Angeles Lakers this season, the summer of 2021 will mark another major accomplishment for LeBron James with the release of “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” And as part of the promotion for the Space Jam reboot with LeBron, Entertainment Weekly did a cover story on LeBron and the Tune Squad with Bugs, Lola and Daffy.

LeBron James was thrilled to share the cover and he addressed once again how big of a deal it is for him to be in his own “Space Jam” movie in the cover story.

“There was a lot of films growing up for me, but Space Jam was up there,” James told EW of Micheal Jordan’s 1996 classic. “For my friends and I, just growing up, loving the NBA, obviously loving Michael Jordan, and loving the Looney Tunes, it was an automatic and a very organic blend between the two worlds. It was fun to see what MJ and Bugs and Taz and all those great Tunes were able to go through in that first movie. It was pretty cool, as a kid, wanting to see the same inspiration from movies and from people that you look up to, and people that you watch on a day-to-day basis. So it definitely was a big part of my childhood.”

But the Entertainment Weekly cover wasn’t just a story for the magazine. The I Promise school in Akron also got their own special cover.
