Watch: C’Bo adds onto Notre Dame’s lead over USF

The Irish lead gets bigger, as running back C’Bo Flemister adds to South Florida’s first half misery.

The Irish have their offense rolling. They have had four possessions, they all have resulted in touchdowns.

Running back C’Bo Flemister makes it three players who have scored touchdowns, Ian Book twice, Chris Tyree and now Flemister. The Irish have opened up a big lead, 28-0, over the visiting Bulls.

Watch Notre Dame take an early lead against South Florida in South Bend.

Last week the offense didn’t look all that great. New offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, a new zone blocking scheme and finding new player makers didn’t result in the best outcome. Just 27 points on the board last week, but his week has been a different story.

The Irish marched down the field 54 yards on 7 plays for the opening drive score.

Notre Dame/South Florida Game Predictions

Can Notre Dame do something they’ve only done 12 times the last 30 years? We’ll find out Saturday

When Notre Dame welcomes South Florida to South Bend on Saturday the Irish will be looking to do something for the third year in a row but for what would be just the 12th time in the last 30 seasons.

That is start the year 2-0.

Under Brian Kelly, Notre Dame has done exactly that five of his ten years, including the last two seasons.  From 1990-2009 however the Irish did that just seven times in those 20 seasons under the watch of Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham, Bob Davie and Lou Holtz.

It’s not the most difficult of opponents coming to Notre Dame Stadium but then again, we said that in September of 2011 when South Florida visited, too.

So what happens this weekend?  Here’s what the staff at Fighting Irish Wire thinks headed into the game weekend:

First up Geoffrey Clark (1-0)

Notre Dame Reunion for Charlie Weis, Jr. This Weekend

The Notre Dame sideline will provide a bit of a homecoming for Charlie Weis, Jr. who returns to ND an assistant on South Florida’s staff this weekend.

It’ll be a homecoming of sorts this weekend when South Florida’s offensive coordinator steps into Notre Dame Stadium to take on the Fighting Irish.

That’s because that offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach used to roam the Notre Dame sideline for a number of years in what was his introduction to coaching.

That offensive coordinator is Charlie Weis, Jr., a young adult that Brian Kelly called a “rising star” in the coaching industry earlier this week.

Charlie Weis, Jr. to Andrea Adelson of ESPN:

Weis said that when he heard USF was working on a last-minute deal to play Notre Dame, his first thought was, “We’ve got a lot of work to do because they’re really good.”

“It’s definitely something I thought about and dreamt about: It would be really cool to go back to South Bend, a place that I love, a place that I still call home, and get to be in Notre Dame Stadium one more time,” Weis Jr. said. “I was really excited about the opportunity to go there. It’s a very special place to us.”

The piece on ESPN also goes on to tell a story of how Weis, Jr. drove from South Florida to South Bend this summer to be able to see his sister Hannah only through a screen door.  Hannah still lives in the group home and neighborhood that was established by Charlie Sr. and his wife through Hannah & Friends.

The rise of Weis, Jr. may come as a surprise but after leaving Notre Dame he’s seen a lot in the football world as he’s had stops at Kansas, Florida, Alabama and Florida Atlantic as well as spending time with the Falcons and Patriots in the NFL.

Notre Dame football: Injury updates for Thursday, Sept. 17

Who will be back and who remains out for Notre Dame this Saturday versus South Florida?

When Notre Dame suits up to host South Florida on Saturday we know they’ll officially be without graduate-transfer Ben Skowronek on the receiver depth chart as Brian Kelly officially ruled him out during media availability on Thursday.

Skowronek is nursing a hamstring injury he sustained in the season-opening win over Duke and won’t be available Saturday according to Kelly.

Kelly also gave the latest on star safety Kyle Hamilton, who he called day-to-day.  Kelly said that Hamilton is in a PPT program (Prayers and Personal Thoughts) after suffering an ankle injury against Duke that looked a lot more severe than it seems to have wound up being.

Other injury news for the Fighting Irish featured speedster Braden Lenzy who had a hamstring flare up and keep him out against Duke.  Kelly stated that Lenzy “looked good after practice”.

And finally wide receiver Kevin Austin who broke his foot early in training camp has progressed far enough to be out of a boot.  His six week scan showed “good signs” he’s now starting to run. No estimate on a return to game action was given.

Notre Dame kicks off their second game of the season against South Florida at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday and will showed on USA as NBC will be showing coverage of the third round of the US Open.

Takeaways from Brian Kelly’s Monday press conference

A few key notes from what Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly told the media on Monday afternoon.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly did his weekly Monday visit with the media and here are a few takeaways from what the Irish leader said.

-Kelly thinks Rees’ did a good job in play calling. Mentioned that the blocking scheme has changed to an outside zone scheme, and “coach Rees did a good job being patient and sticking with the running game.” Later, Kelly would note that the run blocking “looked better in the second half. Got to have live reps.” The offense was much more effective in the second half, after a very slow start to begin the game

-Michael Mayer’s debut was impressive. Kelly was excited for the freshman’s development and this game was a confidence builder for the Kentucky native. Expect to continue to see Mayer as part of the tight end rotation.

-A young wide receiver needs to step up. Kelly was very happy with getting a lot of players game experience, “it allows them to develop as the season goes on.” Two players were called out at the position, Xavier Watts and Jordan Johnson. Both true freshman came into the program with plenty of hype, Johnson being the more sought after prospect. The opportunity is there for one of them to emerge, we’re all just waiting to see it happen.

-Details, details, details. They say that the best football teams do the little things right and that’s exactly what Kelly is suggesting. Focus on the small aspects and then big things will happen. This seemingly was more towards the offense than the defense, but both sides can work on it.

-When asked about this weeks opponent South Florida, Kelly likened their offense to Virginia’s Tech’s. The Bulls “structure is hard to pick up,” with them running an option offense. He was also very complimentary of their offensive line, saying it might be the biggest one they face all season.

Here is the latest injury update, with news on safety Kyle Hamilton and two wide receivers.

After one week the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports saw some significant movement inside the Top 25. The Irish were #10 entering the day and after beating Duke 27-13 they moved up three spots to #7.

Part of the movement was the omission of the Big Ten, who according to reports will try and have a fall football season after all. The polls also dropped Pac-12 teams as well.
