Sooners 2024 SEC schedule toughest, Longhorns 2nd easiest per CBS Sports

CBS Sports ranked each of the SEC schedules for 2024 and the Oklahoma Sooners came in with the toughest, while Texas the second-weakest slate.

Moving to the SEC was going to provide challenges. Of that, there was never a doubt. Yet, it’s still impressive to see Oklahoma’s SEC opponents for the 2024 season laid out on paper.

The Sooners will play Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina at home. They’ll travel to play LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss and Missouri. Then there’s the annual matchup with Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Simply put, it’s a tough schedule to navigate. Alabama is arguably the best program in the country over the last 15 years, and Tennessee’s on the upswing with Josh Heupel’s offense leading the way. LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss create incredible game-day environments.

Over at CBS Sports, Barrett Sallee ranked each of the 16 Big 12 schedules and your Oklahoma Sooners’ 2024 slate is considered the toughest in the conference.

Get ready, Sooners. Your first trip through the SEC gauntlet is going to be a monster. Two of their three true home games are against teams that hit the double-digit win mark in 2022 (Alabama and Tennessee), and they have to travel to three raucous road atmospheres (LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss). When you throw in the fact that coach Brent Venables had an extremely underwhelming debut in 2022, things might get sketchy. — Sallee, CBS Sports

2022 has no bearing on 2024. They will be completely different teams heading into Brent Venables’ third season in Norman. The 2022 recruiting class will be the core of that roster, with Jackson Arnold headlining at quarterback. The team speed and physicality will be at a different level, and it will be a more experienced group, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Especially if guys like Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman stick around for one go-round in the SEC.

But it is a tough schedule. There’s no way around it. The Sooners have work to do on both sides of the ball to prepare the roster for the matchups they’ll face each week in their new conference home. But that doesn’t mean it’s an impossible schedule.

At the back end of the ranking with one of the weakest SEC schedules is the Texas Longhorns, who came in at No. 15.

We are all excited about the rekindled rivalry between the Longhorns and Aggies, and the fact that it’ll be on the road will make it an even tougher test for coach Steve Sarkisian’s crew. However, the other two true road games — Arkansas and Vanderbilt — more than make up for it. The Horns get Georgia at home, but their other three home games will likely be winnable. Sallee, CBS Sports

The Longhorns have the unenviable task of traveling to play the Vanderbilt Commodores (note sarcasm). Sure, they’ll host Georgia, and they return to College Station, but a schedule with Texas A&M, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Arkansas is fairly straightforward for Texas. If the Longhorns don’t go at least 6-2 in the conference, it will be incredibly disappointing.

Mississippi State had the second-best record of teams on their schedule in 2022. Everyone but Georgia and Mississippi State finished 7-6 or worse last season.

In contrast, six of Oklahoma’s eight opponents (including Texas) finished 8-5 or better in 2022.

Now, it’s impossible to get schedule equity in a 16-team league with historic rivalries to consider. The schedule was going to be tough, any way you slice it, and this is what the Oklahoma Sooners asked for.

Final 2022 SEC East football standings

How did SEC East teams, like the Georgia Bulldogs, perform when compared to preseason expectations?

The Georgia Bulldogs have won the SEC East for the second consecutive season. Georgia was voted to win the SEC East in the preseason.

How did the rest of the SEC East teams perform when compared to preseason expectations?

Not many folks saw Tennessee’s fantastic start to the season coming. Additionally, South Carolina’s finish to the regular season could give the Gamecocks a great deal of momentum moving forward.

Report: Aggies will be without multiple starters against South Carolina

Texas A&M will be without multiple starters on offense and defense against South Carolina

Texas A&M is set to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night in Columbia, South Carolina, as tonight’s kickoff is currently set for 6:30 PM CT, and will be aired on the SEC Network.

Well-known to Aggie fans and media by now, head coach Jimbo Fisher is not one to openly discuss injuries in detail throughout the pre-game week, and this time was no different as the team was coming off their bye week, and looked to be the healthiest they’ve been with the week off coming at the perfect time.

Well, as erratic as the information flow in college football media is just hours before a team is set to kick off, some surprising news hit the Aggies in the form of a tweet from TexAgs owner Billy Liucci, who stated that starting center Bryce Foster and starting guard Aki Ogunbiyi are officially out tonight, while starting nickel corner Antonio Johnson, linebacker Edgerrin Cooper may also be out for tonight’s game.

Some good news? As I alluded to in the final injury report earlier today, linebacker Andre White Jr., cornerback Tyreek Chappell, left tackle Trey Zuhn, defensive tackle Shemar Turner, and defensive end Tunmise Adeleye are slated to return to action tonight against the Gamecocks.

Final injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. South Carolina

Final injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. South Carolina

We’re less than 24 hours away from Texas A&M’s (3-3, 1-2 SEC) road matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks (4-2, 1-2 SEC) at the always raucous Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. As both programs are coming off their bye week, the Gamecocks hope to finally break Texas A&M’s win streak in the series once and for all, with the Ag’s leading 8-0 all-time.

Aggies Wire has provided copious amounts of pre-game analysis to satisfy even the most dedicated Aggie fan, so what’s left you may ask? The final injury report ahead of Saturday’s prime-time showdown. On Monday, head coach Jimbo Fisher discussed the team’s current injury status at the start of the week, starting with the availability of quarterback Haynes King who replaced injured starter Max Johnson in the Alabama game, where Fisher stated the King would indeed be available against South Carolina on Saturday night.

Fisher did not confirm who the starter would be on Monday, leaving the door open for the former 5-Star recruit, quarterback Conner Weigman, who would make his first career start with the Aggies if his name was called. However, it remains 50/50 as of today, just as Jimbo Fisher prefers.

Based on my initial injury report from Monday, Fisher did not elaborate on any season-ending injuries, aside from Ainias Smith earlier this season. Finally, there was no mention of defensive end Tunmise Adeleye, defensive tackle Shemar Turner, left tackle Trey Zuhn, or any of the other 9 total starters who missed the Alabama game, though there is the hope that a number of those listed could be available against South Carolina, including linebacker Andre White, and cornerback Tyreek Chappell.

Aggies look to remain undefeated in young history versus the Gamecocks

Aggies look to remain undefeated in young history versus the Gamecocks

The Aggies will look to remain unbeaten versus South Carolina this Saturday night as they travel to Columbia, SC for their third straight SEC road contest (fourth straight if you’re counting the neutral site game in AT&T Stadium).

The history between these two programs began less than a decade ago, with their first match-up taking place in August 2014 – a decisive 52-28 Aggies’ victory in South Carolina. Since then, the Aggies have rattled off seven straight wins with an average margin of victory of 18 points.

In their most recent match-up in October 2021 – a 44-14 victory in College Station – the Aggies rushed for 301(!!!) yards, with 154 of them coming from Devon Achane. Zach Calzada’s passing stats weren’t too impressive (50% completion, 187 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and an interception), but with two backs rushing over 100 yards, there wasn’t much of a need in their passing attack.

As both teams return from their Week 7 bye, the Aggies will be a rested group looking to earn their ninth straight victory over the Gamecocks.

The Aggies take on the Gamecocks on Saturday night, 6:30PM CT, at Williams-Brice Stadium.

As we will continue doing every week until the end of the season, Aggies Wire is here to provide copious amounts of background on every upcoming opponent, with this week’s focus centered around Texas A&M’s week 8  opponent, their SEC West rivals, the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Here is a brief overview of the team heading into Saturday’s 6:30 PM Kickoff on the SEC Network:

Twitter reacts: No. 1 Georgia rolls South Carolina in SEC opener

Twitter is reacting to No. 1 Georgia dominating South Carolina….

No. 1 Georgia has moved to 3-0 on the season after a 48-7 win over South Carolina in the Bulldogs’ SEC opener and first true road test.

Quarterback Stetson Bennett continued his dominate play this season with four total touchdowns.

‘The Mailman’ completed 16 of 23 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 36 yards on three carries and two scores on the ground.

Tight end Brock Bowers had an incredible day racking up 5 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a five-yard touchdown rush to boot.

The Georgia defense held Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler, who threw for 376 yards a week ago at Arkansas, to 13 of 25 passing for only 118 yards and two interceptions.

The UGA defense has yet to take a step back from a record-setting season in 2021. The Bulldogs forced three turnovers, allowed only 7 points – which came in garbage time with backups on the field – and held South Carolina to 306 total yards.

Here’s how UGA Twitter is reacting to the Dawgs win.

BROCK BOWERS SHOW…

There is a Brock Bowers show in Columbia, South Carolina right now.

I”ll stress how rare it is to see a tight end run after the catch like this.

Bowers has put the Bulldogs up 31-0 over South Carolina with more than 12 minutes remaining the third quarter on ESPN.

Bowers stats on the day:

  • One rush for five yards and a touchdown.
