Marquise Brown traded to Arizona Cardinals, reunites with quarterback Kyler Murray

Former Oklahoma Sooners running buddies Kyler Murray and Marquise Brown reunite after Baltimore trades Brown to the Cardinals.

It’s only the first round of the 2022 NFL draft and it isn’t Oklahoma Sooners draft prospects making noise on day one, but two Sooners in the NFL. Wide receiver [autotag]Marquise Brown[/autotag] has been traded by the Baltimore Ravens to the Arizona Cardinals to reunite with his former Sooners quarterback.

In [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag]’s Heisman trophy season, he and Brown connected 75 times for more than 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns. The electric duo helped Oklahoma win 12 games and qualify for the College Football Playoff.

Baltimore send Brown and No. 100 overall to the Cardinals for pick No. 23.

Murray was selected first overall in 2019 and Brown was selected 23rd overall. Now the two sides will go to work trying to chase Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West.

Murray has been in the news a lot in the 2022 offseason as he and the Cardinals are in the midst of contract negotiations. While the discussions haven’t been entirely amicable, the move to trade for Murray’s former teammate should signal their commitment to their franchise quarterback.

Marquise Brown will play alongside All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Brown’s ability to take the top off of the defense will help Hopkins while Brown should get more opportunities in the Cardinals’ passing game because of DeAndre Hopkins.

Baker Mayfield gets support from social media amid trade speculation

The subject of trade speculation, Baker Mayfield received an outpouring of love and support for the Browns quarterback on social media.

The life of an NFL player can change drastically. From helping the Cleveland Browns to their first playoff win since 1994, Baker Mayfield became the subject of trade speculation Tuesday as the Browns flirted with trading for troubled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

In response to the rumors, Mayfield broke his social media hiatus to share his feelings on the matter on Twitter and Instagram.

Mayfield’s time in Cleveland hasn’t been smooth, but the former No. 1 overall pick helped make Browns football competitive again. In his time with Cleveland, Mayfield helped it achieve its first winning season since 2007. The 11-5 record in the 2020 season marked the third time since 1994 that the Cleveland Browns had a winning record. 1994 also was the last time the Browns had won a playoff game until Cleveland beat the Steelers in 2020.

In that AFC wild-card game, Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns in the Browns’ 48-37 win over the Steelers.

While 2021 didn’t go as Mayfield and Cleveland would have liked, Mayfield played through several injuries throughout the season according to Joe Rivera of the Sporting News.

As trade speculation ramped up yesterday, fans of the Cleveland Browns and Mayfield went to social media to express their support of Mayfield and their frustration with the Browns.

Check out some of the best social media reactions to the trade rumors below.

Baker Mayfield shares heart-felt message with Cleveland Browns fans via social media

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield broke his social media silence amid the focus of trade speculation surrounding the Sooners great.

Heading into the final year of his rookie deal, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has become the subject of trade rumors of late. Yesterday, rumors began popping up that the Cleveland Browns were looking into trading for quarterback Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans. Watson has been the target of trade rumors all over the NFL after coming under fire for sexual assault and misconduct allegations in criminal and civil cases. A Harris County Grand jury opted not to pursue criminal proceedings, but Watson still faces a civil suit related to the claims.

Baker Mayfield, who is currently recovering from offseason shoulder surgery that limited him down the stretch, reflected on his time in Cleveland. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Mayfield could still be subject to trade discussions whether or not the Browns acquire Watson from the Texans,

Taking a break from his social media hiatus, Mayfield shared a message to Cleveland fans on Twitter and Instagram. Mayfield said, “This is not a message with hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me.”

Mayfield went on to say, “We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through the ups and downs. I have no clue what happens next, which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process. I can only control what I can, which is trusting in God’s plan throughout this process.”

While Mayfield’s career with the Browns has been an up and down experience, he’s been a part of building a team that hadn’t had much success in the two decades before he arrived. Before beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2020 wild card round, the Cleveland Browns had not won a playoff game since 1994.

Mayfield was 21 of 34 for 263 yards and three touchdowns in that game. They lost the following week by five points to the Kansas City Chiefs, but Mayfield has been a massive part of changing the culture and the narrative surrounding Cleveland Browns football.

It can’t be easy hearing your name attached to trade rumors, and Baker Mayfield’s never been shy about sharing his feelings. Mayfield said, “I have given this franchise everything I have. That is something I’ve done at every stage and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap. Whatever happens, I just want to say thank you to the fans who truly embraced who I am and the mentality that aligned so well with this city’s hard-working people.”

As Mayfield awaits more clarity about his playing future, the Sooners great will be honored after OU’s spring game with a statue in Heisman Park in Norman, Oklahoma celebrating his 2017 Heisman trophy selection.

Looking to keep pace with the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI, Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon threw a touchdown pass to Tee Higgins to make it 13-10 in the 2nd quarter.

The Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals got off to a slow start before the Rams got the scoring going with a Matthew Stafford touchdown pass to Odell Beckham Jr.

The Bengals were able to answer with a field goal before the end of the first quarter to make it 7-3, but the Rams took a 10 point lead when Stafford found Cooper Kupp in the back of the end zone on a play action rollout to make it 13-3.

Just a few minutes later, the Bengals drove deep into Rams territory were set up with a second and goal from the six-yard line. OUDNA took over on the next play as Joe Mixon took the toss play and pulled up before throwing to Tee Higgins in the back of the end zone for the touchdown.

It’s a tight game midway through the second quarter as the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals continue to battle for NFL supremacy.

Oklahoma the only school with 2 rookies with 80+ grade per Pro Football Focus

According to Pro Football Focus, the Oklahoma Sooners are the only school to have two rookies with grades of 80 or more in 2021.

It’s been a tremendous year for the Crimson and Cream at the NFL level. Kyler Murray was the hottest quarterback in the game during the first half of the season, and Jalen Hurts helped get the Philadelphia Eagles into the playoffs for the first time in his career.

Several former Sooners are heading to the Super Bowl as members of the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams.

To further illustrate the tremendous success the University of Oklahoma has experienced at the NFL, Pro Football Focus shared a little nugget. Oklahoma was the only school to have two or more NFL rookies with 80-plus graded seasons in 2021. The two rookies were Creed Humphrey and Rhamondre Stevenson.

Humphrey was the highest-graded center according to Pro Football Focus and received the highest grade for a center since Jason Kelce in 2017. Humphrey and the Chiefs came up short in their bid to make the Super Bowl.

Stevenson received the 12th highest grade for a running back in 2021. He rushed for 633 yards and five touchdowns including 444 yards after contact. His 3.15 yards after contact per attempt was 16th in the NFL among players with at least 68 attempts.

Creed Humphrey among ESPN’s top-10 rookies in 2021 NFL season

Creed Humphrey has enjoyed one of the best rookie seasons in all of the NFL. ESPN placed Humphrey inside its final top-10 rookies ranking.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://soonerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Creed Humphrey could be headed to his first Super Bowl if the Kansas City Chiefs can beat the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

One thing is for certain, Humphrey has had one heck of a rookie season regardless of the outcome on Sunday afternoon. Humphrey finished in the top-10 of ESPN writer Jeff Legwold’s final rookie rankings.

Legwold ranked Humphrey as the No. 4 rookie in the NFL in his final rankings. Here’s what he wrote about Humphrey’s rookie campaign.

Like the first three players on this list, Humphrey wasn’t just good for a rookie; he was playing at an All-Pro level for much of the season. He was the biggest value pick among this year’s top 10 rookies after checking in as the second-to-last selection of the second round last April. Humphrey’s movement skills, recognition and composure are evident throughout the game tape, and he is exactly what a long-term solution looks like at the position. His 97.7% pass block win rate was No. 1 in the entire NFL, and his 98.2% pass block win rate when facing double-teams was sixth. – Legwold, ESPN.

The former Sooner was drafted by Kansas City in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the No. 63 overall pick. Humphrey started all 17 games for Kansas City.

Humphrey was named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Pro team. The 6-foot-5, 309 pound center was also named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie Team.

The Chiefs retooled their offensive line after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9 in Super Bowl LV. Of course, Humphrey was part of that metamorphosis for K.C.

He’s joined on the Chiefs’ offensive line by former OU star Orlando Brown Jr. who plays left tackle for Kansas City.

The Chiefs also signed guard Joe Thuney and drafted rookie Trey Smith in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft as well.

If he’s healthy, former Sooner and star tackle Trent Williams will play in the NFC Championship Game for the San Francisco 49ers against the Los Angeles Rams.

Philadelphia Eagles GM, head coach say Jalen Hurts is the team’s 2022 starting quarterback

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni both said they expect Jalen Hurts to be the 2022 starter.

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni served up a vote of confidence in second-year starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Pressed whether or not Hurts would indeed be the Eagles’ starting quarterback in 2022, Roseman answered yes multiple times during Philadelphia’s exit interviews with the local media.

“You know, we talk about Jalen and the growth he had. Really, first-year starter, second-year player leading this team to the playoffs. Tremendously impressed by his work ethic, his leadership. We talked, last time we talked was during camp and we said we wanted to see him take the bull by the horn and he certainly did that,” Roseman said.

Hurts finished the 2021 regular season with 3,144 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns against nine interceptions. The former Sooner signal-caller led the Eagles into the NFL Playoffs as the NFC’s No. 7 seed after Philly posted a 9-8 record.

Hurts threw for 258 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he was also intercepted twice in the Eagles’ 31-15 loss in the wild card round versus the Bucs.

With three first-round picks (Nos. 15, 16 and 19) in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft, there was speculation that the Eagles might use those picks to either draft another quarterback or perhaps trade for another established starter.

At least for now, Roseman made it clear that Philadelphia’s intention is to build the roster around Hurts.

“I think for us we’ve got to do whatever we can to continue to help him develop and how do we do that? By surrounding him with really good players. Players continue to grow. That’s a huge part of developing. They grow. How they are in their second year is not how they’re going to be in year four, five, six and seven. They’re also products of the people around them, so that’s on us to continue to build this team,” Roseman said.

Sirianni said it’s been made clear to Hurts that he is the Eagles’ starting quarterback moving forward as well.

“Jalen knows where he stands with us. He knows he’s our quarterback. How do you know where you stand with a coaching staff? Because you communicate and you talk over and over and over and over again. And so, Jalen knows where he stands with us. I thought he did a great job of getting better throughout the year as we’ve talked about. And so, yeah, there’s no secrets there. He knows he’s our guy,” Sirianni said.

Hurts reflected on his season the day before and said the Eagles can build off what they accomplished in 2021 together.

“I think I’ve done a lot of great things this year. A lot of things to learn from personally. I think the most important thing for me when you ask that question is the relationships that I’ve built with my teammates. The time that we’ve put in. Put in the work, getting this far in the season and overcoming the different things we’ve overcome this year and being with my coaches, building relationships with them and building something special in the future. I think there’s a lot of value in everything that’s happened this year and it’ll do us a good deed coming up next year,” Hurts said.

Hurts is one of three former Sooners that were starting quarterbacks in the NFL this past season, joining Arizona’s Kyler Murray and Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield.

Oklahoma Sooners Wide Receiver Michael Woods II declares for the 2022 NFL draft

Oklahoma’s Michael Woods II became the 11th Sooners player to declare for the 2022 NFL draft.

Roster turnover is a reality for every school, every January. The best college football teams are the ones that find a way to mitigate losses either with developing players or through the transfer portal. The Oklahoma Sooners will need to do both as the roster takes on a whole new look under new head coach Brent Venables.

Joining a growing list of NFL draft declarations is wide receiver Michael Woods II who announced via his Twitter account that he’ll be heading to the NFL draft this April.

In the statement he released via social media, Woods stated, “I want to start off by saying thank you to every person that has had a hand in my development as a person as well as a football player. Thank you to everyone who has ever coached or supported me. Thank you to my alma mater, Arkansas for taking a chance on a 17-year old kid from Magnolia, Texas and turning him into a man. Thank you to the University of Oklahoma for gifting and blessing me with a chance to put on the Crimson and Cream. Thank you to my family and friends for their endless support. Lastly, I would like to thank God, for blessing me with my talents and allowing me to play this game. With that being said, I am declaring for the 2022 NFL draft.”

Michael Woods II becomes the 11th Oklahoma Sooners player to declare for the NFL draft since the end of the regular season. He joins Jeremiah Hall, Tyrese Robinson, Marquis Hayes, and Kennedy Brooks as members of the offense to declare.

Michael Woods had a nice season for the Sooners, catching 35 passes for 400 yards and two touchdowns. His season was much like the rest of the Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver group. Up and down. Woods most productive game of the year came against the West Virginia Mountaineers where he had eight receptions for 86 yards.

Underutilized in the offense, Woods only had three games with more than four receptions on the season.

Heading to the NFL, Woods has the size, speed, athleticism, and tackle breaking ability that will make him an asset for NFL teams. Without elite production in college it’s likely he falls to the middle or later rounds of the NFL draft despite the fact that he’ll test well at the NFL Draft Combine and Oklahoma’s Pro Day.

Former Sooner Mark Andrews sets Ravens’ single-season receiving yardage record

Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews set the franchise’s single-season receiving mark in the Ravens’ 20-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s been a record-breaking season for Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews already. On Dec. 19 versus the Green Bay Packers, Andrews became the first Ravens tight end in franchise history to eclipse the 1,000-yard receiving mark in a single season.

Andrews crossed off another milestone today and entered the Ravens’ record books. The former Oklahoma tight end hauled in an 18-yard reception from Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley early in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Rams to become Baltimore’s single-season receiving yardage leader.

Andrews finished with six receptions for 89 yards in the Ravens’ 20-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. That brings Andrews’ receiving yardage total up to 1,276 receiving yards this season.

It broke the mark of 1,201 receiving yards that former Ravens wide receiver Michael Jackson set back in the 1996 season during the franchise’s first season in Baltimore after relocating from Cleveland.

“It’s an honor, you know what I mean? There’s a lot of great players that have played here and I’ve played with a lot of great players. Without my teammates, without the guys throwing me the ball, pass protecting, my receivers on the outside, my tight end room, man, shout out to them…without all those guys, man, I wouldn’t be where I’m at. They push me to be great each and every day and that’s what we all do. We’re all working to be the best that we can be. Again, I’m honored. It’s humbling to be able to be in this position that I am,” Andrews said.

Andrews is within striking distance of the Ravens’ franchise single-season receptions record, too. With 99 grabs on the season, Andrews is now five receptions shy of breaking former Baltimore wide receiver Derrick Mason’s franchise-best 103 receptions during the 2007 season.

Andrews’ play is one of the lone bright spots over the last five weeks for Baltimore. The Ravens have lost five straight with starting quarterback Lamar Jackson sidelined to plummet out of the AFC playoff picture after dropping Sunday’s game against the Rams.

Andrews has five games this season where he’s eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark.

Baltimore closes its regular season next Sunday at noon when the Ravens host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

WATCH: CeeDee Lamb scores first touchdown of the season for Dallas Cowboys

In a tight contest between the Cowboys and Tampa Bay to open the NFL season, CeeDee Lamb scores the Cowboys’ first TD of the season.

As the NFL season kicks off tonight with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football, the eyes of Sooners Nation tuned into watch former Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

In the first quarter of action, Lamb did not disappoint.

With the Dallas Cowboys down 7-0 vs. the Buccaneers, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott dropped back to pass. After faking a WR screen to Lamb, Lamb took off down the sideline. Prescott pump-faked again and found CeeDee Lamb wide open. The former Sooner made a Bucs defender miss and found his way into the endzone for the Cowboys’ first touchdown of the season.

As a big part of the Dallas Cowboys passing attack, CeeDee Lamb is in line for big-time production in 2021. After a really nice rookie season playing with four different quarterbacks, Lamb gets to settle in with a returning Prescott.

Through three quarters, Lamb has five receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Though CeeDee Lamb has struggled with drops, he’s still one of the bright young stars at the wide receiver position in the NFL.
