Social media reacts to Duke legend saying he would transfer to UNC

Social media reacts to former Duke star Jay Williams saying he would transfer to the UNC basketball program if he had a choice.

The UNC men’s basketball team has been playing their best basketball of the year lately, so much so that even a former Duke star admitted that the Tar Heels would be his choice in the transfer portal.

Duke guard turned sports analyst Jay Williams had social media in a frenzy while commentating the Kansas and Oklahoma State. Williams was asked, if the transfer portal existed when he played where he would go, answering Georgetown. However, when followed up about playing in today’s game, which school would be his choice, he reluctantly said UNC.

Williams credited the fast pace UNC plays with as why, highlighting how they let RJ Davis go out and play at his pace. Williams even acknowledged how the answer would make it difficult to return home (Cameron Indoor Stadium), but decided to keep it real.

Safe to say the answer caused quite a stir on social with college hoop fans discussing their what if. Let’s take a look at how social media reacted to Williams saying he would transfer to UNC if he played today.

Social media reacts to Baker Mayfield’s big win over the Eagles in the NFL playoffs

Baker Mayfield had a big game in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win over the Philadelphia Eagles and here’s how social media reacted.

Vindication. Redemption. There are a number of words you could use to describe Baker Mayfield’s performance against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.

Mayfield was 22 of 36 for 337 yards and three touchdowns in the Buccaneer’s 32-9 win to move on to the divisional round of the playoffs, where they’ll face the Detroit Lions.

The former Sooner and Heisman Trophy winner completed passes to nine different receivers while completing 61% of his passes.

Mayfield was the first quarterback in Bucs history to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in the playoffs. He joined Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in the playoffs for Tampa Bay.

It was quite the statement to an NFL that had written off the former No. 1 overall pick. Mayfield was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL draft and in 2020, helped Cleveland win its first playoff game since the 1994 season. But after playing through an injury to try and help Cleveland get back to the playoffs, the Browns went in a different direction.

This win provided further evidence that [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] is a quarterback that you can win with in the NFL. Now he and the Bucs take their story on the road to see if they can knock of the Detroit Lions who are having their own magical season.

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners loss to the Kansas Jayhawks

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners 78-66 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse

It was an all too familiar feeling as the second half played out and the Oklahoma Sooners finished on the wrong end of another game inside Allen Fieldhouse.

The Kansas Jayhawks made the right adjustments to take the Sooners out of their game in the second half. Turnovers killed Oklahoma’s efforts once again and they couldn’t shoot themselves back into the game when it came to crunch time.

Still, this is just Oklahoma’s third loss on the season. They’ve lost to two top-10 opponents and a TCU team that was able to hang with Kansas to a two-point loss just a week ago.

Oklahoma is a good team, but they’ll have to figure out how to get some wins on the road in a Big 12 conference that isn’t going to give the Sooners anything.

After being down by just one at halftime, this loss is a tough one. However, there’s a lot of basketball left to be played down this season to put Oklahoma in a favorable position to make the NCAA tournament with a top-eight seed in March Madness.

Here’s a look at how social media reacted to the Sooners’ loss to Kansas.

Social media reacts to UNC Basketball silencing the Wolf Pack

Social media reacts to UNC silencing the Wolf Pack howl, beating NC State 67-54.

The UNC men’s basketball program traveled 23 miles to take on NC State with dibs on first place in the ACC on the line.

The bad blood between the two programs has reached new heights in the last few years, and the play on the court showed it as both teams struggled to find rhythm early on. In the first 15 minutes of action, turnovers and missed calls painted the picture, and frustration built on social media with fans in awe of the bad shooting and ACC refereeing.

Frustration only grew more, mostly directed at the officiating, with an alarming differential at the free throw line in the first half, with UNC having two free throw attempts compared to NC State’s 15. The second-half pace picked up as both teams traded buckets, keeping the score tight.

Despite the lack of calls, [autotag]Armando Bacot[/autotag] riding the bench because of foul trouble, and a quiet scoring night for [autotag]RJ Davis[/autotag], UNC found a way to avoid the upset by beating NC State 67-54. Using the same formula to beat Pitt and Clemson, UNC has proven no matter the physicality of the opponent they can still get their buckets once they find their groove.

The win gives UNC sole first place in the ACC, passing another test in their journey for the National Championship. Let’s look at how social media reacted to UNC quieting the Wolf Pack.

Social media reacts to UNC’s lockdown defensive performance at Clemson

The UNC men’s basketball team proved to be among college basketball’s best on Saturday afternoon, clamping down Clemson in a 10-point win.

If there were any remaining concerns about UNC not being an ACC basketball contender this year, those completely diminished on Saturday afternoon.

The Tar Heels weren’t able to unleash their high-octane offense on the Clemson Tigers, but instead lock them down defensively in a 65-55 UNC victory.

This game featured two of the ACC’s best big – UNC’s Armando Bacot and a 20-point scorer in Clemson’s P.J. Hall. It was a battle in the paint throughout the crucial conference clash, but one Bacot ultimately won. Bacot recorded yet another double-double, this time with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Hall only scored 10 points and fouled out late.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half and played a close game for most of the second, but that changed with Carolina’s late spurt. With 5:18 remaining in the game, UNC took a 5-point lead on Bacot’s first made free throw. Then, with 2:23 remaining, Harrison Ingram pushed the Tar Heels’ advantage to seven with a contested latup.

Carolina isn’t known to be a great 3-point shooting team, but the perimeter shooting proved a major advantage against Clemson. UNC made 8/23 downtown attempts, while limiting the Tigers to a horrid 1-of-18 mark.

Let’s see what Tar Heel Nation thinks of the timely victory:

Social media reacts to UNC hiring Jeff Collins as DC

Geoff Collins had up-and-down head coaching stints, but has greatly excelled as a defensive coordinator. He now takes over UNC’s worst unit.

Not one player – or one person – can fix how horrendous the UNC football team’s defense is.

The 6-0 start fooled all of Tar Heel Nation. A 9-sack performance in the 2023 opener against South Carolina and emergence of Alijah Huzzie, turned into allowing Georgia Tech and a lowly UVA squad to combine for over 1,000 offensive yards.

There were plenty of calls for firing Gene Chizik from his defensive coordinator position during the season, a trend I feel like is emerging across struggling teams on all levels. That finally happened on Wednesday this week, as Chizik’s firing came exactly a week after UNC’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl loss to West Virginia.

It only took Carolina two days to find its next defensive coordinator, as former Temple and Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins was hired earlier Friday.

In addition to his two head coaching stops, which include most wins in a Temple Head coach’s first two seasons, Collins has also been the defensive coordinator at Albright Colege, Florida International University, Mississippi State and Florida. His Mississippi State and Florida defenses finished Top-25 nationally, a sign all UNC fans are sure to be excited about.

Let’s take a deeper look into what Tar Heel Nation thinks of the hire:

Social media reacts to the report that Zac Alley will be Oklahoma’s next defensive coordinator

The Oklahoma Sooners appear set to hire Zac Alley as their next defensive coordinator and here’s how social media reacted.

The Oklahoma Sooners made news on Thursday when it was announced they had mutually agreed to part ways with defensive coordinator Ted Roof. But it didn’t take long for news to surface that the Sooners have found their replacement.

According to a report from 247Sports Matt Zenitz, the Sooners are expected to hire Jacksonville State defensive coordinator Zac Alley.

Alley spent the last two years with the Gamecocks, helping them win nine games in their first season at the FBS level. He’s also spent time with Louisiana-Monroe and Boise State. He also spent time with Brent Venables as a student and grad assistant at Clemson.

It’s yet to be officially announced, but based on reports from several outlets, the Sooners have their next defensive coordinator in Zac Alley.

Here’s how social media reacted.

Social media reacts to UNC Football parting ways Gene Chizik

Social media reacts to the news of the UNC Football parting ways with defensive coach Gene Chizik, a week after the Nightmare Bowl loss.

The day many Tar Heel fans had hoped for came, as it was announced Wednesday morning that the UNC football program and [autotag]Gene Chizik[/autotag] had agreed to part ways.

The news shot out to social media like a cannon, with some satisfied by the staff changes, and others feeling like it was a little too late. Despite fans clamoring for Chizik’s departure for quite some time, the defensive coach era at UNC didn’t last long, only spending two seasons in Chapel Hill.

UNC did improve on the defensive end from Chizik’s first season to his second, allowing 30.8 points in year one to 27.3 in year two. Still, UNC’s struggles on the defensive end remained a liability, and the play calling was abysmal, resulting in the eventual parted ways.

The Tar Heels will now be in search of their third defensive coordinator since [autotag]Mack Brown[/autotag] returned as the Head Coach in 2018. Brown whose support from fans has begun to waver, finds himself in a spot to bring in a defensive coordinator who can bring the excitement and promise back to the UNC football program.

It was quite a sight on social media as opinions began to circulate. From the good to the bad, here are the social media reactions to UNC Football parting ways with Gene Chizik.

Social media reacts to UNC basketball’s gritty win over Pitt

Social media reacts to UNC basketball’s gritty win over Pitt, winning their first conference road game of the season.

The UNC men’s basketball program traveled to Pittsburgh for their first road conference game of the season, as UNC looked to kick off the new year with a victory.

UNC had yet to beat Pitt in the [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag] era, losing three straight. So, when the Tar Heels got off to a slow start, going 0-10 before [autotag]RJ Davis[/autotag] broke the scoring seal, overreactions had already filled the timelines on social media.

In Pitt fashion, they kept the game physical, and without too many whistles blown, it was the ideal recipe to keep UNC uncomfortable. The lack of a whistle didn’t go unnoticed as social media gave referee Ted Valentine a piece of their mind, even former UNC QB Marquise Williams got in on the action calling out Valentine’s “agenda”.

Despite fighting tooth and nail for every ball with not much help from the refs, the Tar Heels were able to go on a few runs, creating a sizable lead late in the second half. Even with Pitt’s attempts at a comeback, UNC was able to close the show, beating the Panthers 70-57.

The hard-fought victory swept through social media, as some praised the Tar Heels and others saw a blind spot in UNC’s strengths. From the good to the bad, we take a look at how social media reacted to UNC’s gritty win over Pitt.

Social media reacts to the Texas Longhorns’ loss in the Sugar Bowl

The Texas Longhorns lost in devastating fashion in the College Football Playoff and here’s how social media reacted.

In what many are calling the best College Football Playoff semifinal ever, the Texas Longhorns walked away empty handed.

After it looked like they weren’t going to get another significant chance to try to win their semifinal with Washington, the Longhorns moved the ball to the Huskies 15-yard line with a shot to win the game.

Four plays later, the Longhorns’ season ended in defeat. Steve Sarkisian inexplicably threw a swing pass to Jaydon Blue on first down, which gained zero yards but took time off the clock. On second down, Ewers threw the ball out of the end zone with Adonai Mitchell well covered. On third down, the Texas quarterback felt the pressure on the blitz and had to get rid of the ball. As he did, the clock nearly struck zero.

The officiating crew rightfully put one second back on the clock. On the final play, Ewers threw a jump ball to Mitchell in the end zone, which was knocked away by Washington cornerback Elijah Jackson to seal the win for the Huskies.

Washington moves on to take on the Michigan Wolverines in the College Football Playoff national championship, and Oklahoma fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

Here’s how social media reacted.
