Lions hit up Auburn, Central Michigan pro days in search of draft prospects

The Detroit Lions hit up Auburn and Central Michigan pro days in search of 2022 NFL draft prospects

The pro day circuit spread out across the country on Tuesday. Even in the midst of the free agency legal tampering period, the Lions still had reps in attendance for at least two of the college workouts.

The first of the day was close to Detroit, a short jaunt to Mt. Pleasant for Central Michigan’s pro day. All 32 teams were in attendance, with OT Bernhard Raimann as the primary attraction.

Raimann is an Austrian native who is often projected as a top-40 pick. The Lions don’t need another offensive tackle, but he’s an intriguing prospect who also met with the team during the Senior Bowl week. Linemate Luke Goedeke, another Senior Bowler, does have some potential to head to Detroit as a versatile reserve lineman in the later rounds. He can play all the OL spots and has some impressive people-moving skills as a run blocker. Both Raimann and Goedeke began their college careers as tight ends.

There were several prospects from D-II programs Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State at the workout as well. Another Chippewa prospect to know: WR Kalil Pimpleton, a lightning-quick but undersized slot receiver who has a lot of juice as a return man too.

Auburn Tigers

The bigger school on Tuesday’s schedule was Auburn, where all 32 teams were also in attendance. The Lions primary focus from the Tigers was likely in the secondary, where CB Roger McCreary and S Smoke Monday are both appealing prospects.

The Lions know McCreary quite well. They coached him on the American team in January’s Senior Bowl. McCreary measured smaller and with shorter arms than expected in Mobile, but he’s working hard to overcome his lack of desired length. His game film against Alabama is one of the best any cornerback in this draft can boast, however. McCreary did improve upon his NFL scouting combine workout numbers in the morning workout. CB in the 32-34 overall range isn’t generally regarded as a priority need for Detroit but McCreary fits the bill if they are looking in that range.

Monday is a hard-hitting safety with size and closing speed. In Detroit’s defense he would function more as an extra linebacker until he proves he can handle coverage assignments down the field, something he struggled with for Auburn. Monday is generally projected in the third or fourth round of most mock drafts.

Other Tigers who could interest the Lions include LB Zacoby McClain and LB Chandler Wooten.

Auburn NFL hopefuls participate in pro day

The likes of Roger McCreary and Smoke Monday got another chance to show their skills at Auburn’s pro day on Tuesday.

It was a busy Tuesday for the former Auburn football players who showcased themselves for Auburn’s pro day.

Pro days are typically held by universities in a separate event to the NFL combine, where many players decline to show off their talent in favor of working out at their university. Auburn prospect Roger McCreary was the most notable of that category, opting to run drills he didn’t participate in during the NFL combine.

McCreary did run the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis, but he managed to improve his time from a 4.50 at the NFL Combine to an unofficial 4.46 at Auburn’s pro day. He also boasted a 31.5-inch vertical jump and an impressive 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench.

“Growing up, I always had a chip on my shoulder,” McCreary said in a team release. “I just want to prove everybody wrong. That was my mindset: prove everybody wrong and dominate the No. 1 receiver.”

Safety Smoke Monday was another prospect that has been getting NFL buzz. He’s not as highly projected as McCreary, currently set for the third or fourth round, He ran a relatively slow 4.52 forty at the Combine that he didn’t attempt again at pro day, but he did run defensive back drills in an attempt to drive his stock upward before the NFL Draft next April.

“It’s been great. It’s been what I dreamed it would be growing up,” Monday said. “Not many guys get to feel this moment. If you work hard and you do everything right, God will put you in the right position.”

Other notable pro day performances came from the likes of Devin Guice, a walk-on safety who managed an impressive 35-inch vertical leap and 10-7 broad jump, and linebacker Chandler Wooten, who was able to put his talent on display after opting out of the 2020 season and becoming a team captain when he played last year.

The NFL draft will take place from April 28-30 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Smoke Monday’s outlook for the 2022 NFL Draft

A look at how Smoke Monday will fit into the NFL.

Smoke Monday is set to begin the next stage of his football career.

Monday started at safety for two seasons but was a key contributor in each of his four seasons on The Plains. Monday appeared in 50 games in his time at Auburn and made 172 tackles, 17.0 TFLs, 6.0 sacks, five interceptions, 13 passes defended, and three pick-sixes.

Monday earned a bigger role for himself each season and eventually became one of the hardest-hitting players in the country.

With the NFL Combine completed the next step for Monday is Auburn’s Pro Day on March 15 and then the NFL Draft. Ahead of those two milestone days here is a look at Monday’s strengths and weaknesses as a prospect.

Full seven-round Eagles mock draft: Post NFL scouting-combine edition

With the #NFLCombine in the rearview mirror, here are our updated full seven-round #Eagles mock draft 3.0 #NFLDraft2022

The NFL scouting combine is a wrap and now all 32 teams will turn their attention towards free agency and roster building.

The Eagles are one week away from the start of an intriguing offseason that starts with free agency,  features three-first round picks, valuable salary-cap space, and several different routes the franchise can choose to follow.

If Jalen Hurts is the quarterback for at least the next calendar year, then Philadelphia will choose to build around the quarterback, and they still could push a first-round pick back to 2023 where the quarterback class will be much more talented.

With Russell Wilson now a member of the Broncos, it’ll be either trade for Deshaun Watson or Hurts as the guy.

It’ll be an interesting lead-up to April’s NFL draft and we’re adding to the fun with our third full seven-round mock draft 3.0, this time, post-scouting-combine.

In this seven-round mock draft using Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, we again avoided making any trades in this version, choosing to fully restock a roster that has holes on both sides of the ball, utilizing seven of the 10 picks on high-profile and highly versatile defensive players.

Breaking down Chiefs’ picks in latest Draft Wire 3-round mock draft

The #Chiefs add a weapon on offense before addressing the defense in the latest 3-round mock draft from @TheDraftWire

The Kansas City Chiefs front office is hard at work composing their draft board with the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine just a few short weeks away.

With Super Bowl LVI and the 2021 NFL season officially in the rearview, our friends at Draft Wire have released an updated three-round mock draft. In these projections, Kansas City adds a weapon for Patrick Mahomes and the offense first before turning their focus to the defensive side of the ball. They started things off by grabbing a receiver who is coming off of an injury.

Keep in mind, the NFL should soon solidify the complete 2022 draft order, but they haven’t done that yet. So in this mock draft, you won’t see the third-round compensatory pick that the team is expected to receive from the Ryan Poles hiring.

Auburn secondary duo get a new home in latest Draft Wire mock

The latest Draft Wire mock sends the Auburn duo to new homes for 2022.

A new week, a new mock draft from Luke Easterling of Draft Wire.

The top two draft-eligible Tigers both play on the defensive side of the ball. In fact, they are both in the secondary. Roger McCreary is among the top cornerbacks available and Smoke Monday will likely be a day two selection come April.

McCreary and Monday were among the trio of Auburn defenders invited to the NFL Combine on Mar. 1. The event will run through Mar. 7, where they will compete in drills and meet with prospective teams. As we know it, these are the biggest job interviews of their lives.

As we focus on the task at hand, where could Roger McCreary and Smoke Monday land in the NFL?

Several former Auburn Tigers lead NFL draft positional rankings

Two Auburn defensive backs are among the top of their group.

The completion of the Super Bowl on Sunday means we are full speed ahead towards the NFL draft. Three former Auburn Tigers will take part in the NFL Combine next month in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Among the best draft prospects for the Tigers is cornerback Roger McCreary, who really solidified himself as the SEC’s best boundary defender in 2021. He didn’t lead the league in interceptions, but McCreary showed consistency for the defense. He will now have an opportunity to do it at the next level.

Given how the Super Bowl ended for the Cincinnati Bengals, could they use him in coverage? Absolutely. They do need help on the offensive line but if McCreary is still on board at pick No. 31, they should strongly consider it.

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire put together his updated positional rankings following the Senior Bowl festivities. A pair of defenders are among the top 10 at their position and a former quarterback leads his group.

Next, the rankings

Eagles land Nakobe Dean, Jermaine Johnson in Draft Wire’s latest 3-round mock

#Eagles land #NakobeDean, #JermaineJohnson, and #SmokeMonday in @TheDraftWire’s 3-round post-Senior Bowl mock #NFLDraft2022

The Super Bowl is just three days away and as fans around the world get prepared to end the 2021 season, teams around the league are preparing for the NFL draft.

Philadelphia will have three first-round picks and four of the first 55 picks overall, setting the Eagles up for a monumental reload if Howie Roseman can land the talent needed to upgrade Jonathan Gannon’s defense.

The Draft Wire just released their most recent three-round mock draft and Philadelphia came away with an impressive haul that could go a long way towards putting this franchise back into the Super Bowl.

Auburn sends three players to the NFL Combine

Three Tigers heading to the Combine.

The next step in the process for the draft is the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event will take place from Mar. 1 through Mar. 7.

The Auburn Tigers are sending three players from the 2021 roster to the combine, all of which come on the defensive side of the ball. It was announced on the NFL’s website on Wednesday.

Jake Crandall / USA TODAY NETWORK
  • Roger McCreary, Cornerback
  • Smoke Monday, Safety
  • Zakoby McClain, Linebacker

McCreary was a two-year starter for the Tigers defense over the last two seasons. He was used in more of a reserve role in this first two seasons on the Plains. McCreary is viewed as one of the top three cornerbacks in the upcoming NFL draft, as one of the most consistent boundary defenders in college football.

Monday wrapped up his Tigers career as he played in all 13 games in 2021. In all, Monday played in 50 games for the Auburn defense over four seasons. He is viewed as a day two selection and could see playing time immediately at the NFL level. His size will make him highly-coveted by NFL defenses at safety.

[lawrence-related id=41480]

McClain saw time as a freshman at linebacker in a limited role that increased in his sophomore campaign. As a multi-year starter, McClain will bring experience in a reserve role at the next level with the opportunity to work his way into rotations and sub packages. He appeared in 49 games for Auburn with 268 tackles, 19 TFLs, and 5.5 sacks.

This trio will have the biggest job interviews of their life in Indianapolis as they look to impress NFL organizations.
