Where each Longhorn landed in the 2022 MLB Draft

Texas baseball has had at least one player selected in every single MLB Draft.

The 2022 Major League Baseball Draft came to a conclusion on Tuesday afternoon.

Texas baseball was well represented through the 20 rounds on the draft. Eight Longhorns were selected this year, Gold Spikes Award Winner Ivan Melendez was the first off the board in the second round.

Four members of the Texas 2022 signing class heard their named called over the past three days. Cutter Coffey, Henry Bolte, Brenner Cox and Wyatt Cheney will likely turn pro over suiting up in the Burnt Orange.

Texas’ eight draft picks ranked fourth among college programs behind a few Big 12 and SEC schools.

David Pierce’s roster is going to have a much different look next season. Pitcher Lucas Gordon and outfielder Dylan Campbell return as key contributors from the 2022 team. Texas has already landed a few transfers to replace the slew of players headed out the door.

Here is where all eight Longhorns landed in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Social media reacts to Texas baseball’s comeback win over ECU

Dylan Campbell’s clutch walk-off has social media buzzing.

The Longhorns came all the way back from down 7-2 to come out with a 9-8 win over East Carolina.

Home runs off the bat of Douglas Hodo and Skyler Messinger tied the ballgame in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for Texas outfielder Dylan Campbell’s heroics.

The sophomore ripped out the hearts of the purple and gold faithful with a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth and a walk-off single in the ninth.

Campbell has been one of Texas’ best hitters down the stretch this season and came through when the Horns needed him most.

Texas and East Carolina will face off again tomorrow with a trip to Omaha on the line. Expect Texas to empty the tank from a bullpen perspective. David Pierce said in his postgame presser that every pitcher would be available if needed.

Here is how social media reacted to Texas’ miraculous comeback victory.

Dylan Campbell plays hero as Texas beats ECU 9-8

Late inning heroics forced a winner-take-all game three in Greenville.

There will be baseball played tomorrow in Greenville as Texas has forced a winner-take-all game three against East Carolina. The Longhorns trailed 7-2 heading into the seventh inning before a miraculous comeback started off the bat of Douglas Hodo.

The Texas centerfielder launched a two-run home run over the right field wall to cut the Pirates’ lead to 7-4.

More fireworks came in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Back-to-back singles from Murphy Stehly and Austin Todd put runners on the corners for Skyler Messinger.

Messinger flipped the script of the ballgame as he sent a three-run bomb to right to tie the ballgame.

That was not all for Texas in the frame. Dylan Campell would provide Texas the lead with a solo shot of his own against ECU’s top arm Carter Spivey.

East Carolina would not go away in the ninth. Down to their last out, Jacob Starling smoked a ball just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game yet again. All the momentum and energy went to the ECU side.

Texas stayed calm and composed in the bottom half of the ninth. Ivan Melendez smiled as he led off the inning with a single, followed by a couple of walks to load the bases with two outs.

Dylan Campbell hit a two-strike pitch off the right field wall to walk off the Pirates and send this series to three games. The winner of Sunday’s affair will clinch a ticket to the College World Series.

No. 9 Texas opens the NCAA tournament with an 11-3 win over Air Force

Texas is off to a fantastic start to the NCAA Tournament.

No. 9 Texas baseball could not ask for a better start to the NCAA Tournament. The Longhorns took down Paul Skenes and Air Force 11-3, saving relief pitcher Tristan Stevens in the process.

Texas was able to force the Falcons to the bullpen in the fifth inning by taking excellent at-bats and working deep into many counts. Skyler Messinger had a huge day at the plate, going 4-5 with three RBI. The third baseman broke the game open with a bases loaded RBI single in the fifth.

Texas’ offense would keep the foot on the gas all game, finishing with 11 runs on 12 hits.

Pete Hansen brought his prototypal ace stuff on Friday. The lefty held down Air Force’s powerful offense to just three runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Marcus Olivarez and Coy Cobb provided strong innings of relief to close the door.

Texas is on to the winner’s bracket and will face the winner of Louisiana Tech and Dallas Baptist on Saturday night.

No. 8 Oklahoma State outlasts No. 10 Texas in an 8-6 thriller

The bullpen struggles continue for No. 10 Texas.

On a night with two of the Big 12 top arms going up against each other, the offenses were the star of the show in game one between No. 8 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Texas.

Texas lefty Pete Hansen surrendered a rare six runs across seven innings. The Cowboys took advantage of the windy conditions in Austin, hitting three home runs against the Longhorns ace.

Oklahoma State star Justin Campbell did not have his best stuff on the mound either. Texas scored four runs on eight hits against the All-American to chase him out of the game in the fifth.

The game turned into a battle of the bullpens, a scenario where Texas has not fared well this season. After Skyler Messinger’s second home run of the night tied the game a 6-6, Aaron Nixon gave up a two-run, two-out double in the top of the ninth inning.

The Cowboys slammed the door on the Longhorns to take the series opener 8-6.

Texas Baseball: Five players with breakout potential

Big seasons from these players could put Texas over the top.

The 2022 Longhorns do not have many question marks entering the new season. Texas returns a star-studded pitching staff as well as a very experienced lineup from a team that was right on the doorstep of playing for a national title.

For that reason, most media outlets have Texas ranked as the preseason No. 1 team in the country.

Much of the success of the Horns’ 2021 season came from breakout stars Mike Antico and Ivan Melendez along with freshman All-Americans Tanner Witt, Mitchell Daly and Aaron Nixon. Even Tristian Stevens who was an older guy stepped up and became an All-Big 12 weekend pitcher.

On paper, Texas has another Omaha caliber roster but if the Horns have a few breakout players similar to last year, the sky is the limit for this group.

Here is a list of five players who could have breakout seasons this spring and put Texas over the top:

Texas ranks No. 1 in D1Baseball’s preseason rankings

Texas baseball ranks preseason No. 1 after coming up just short in Omaha a season ago.

We are about a month away from the start of a new college baseball season and Texas fans have lots to be excited about.

The Horns rank No. 1 in D1Baseball’s preseason top 25 rankings and will return the majority of their College World Series team from a year ago.

Tanner Witt, Tristan Stevens and Pete Hansen will make up one of the best starting rotations in the nation backed by freshman All-American Aaron Nixon returning as the team’s closer.

In the field, Texas has six of nine guys back from last season. The return of outfielder Austin Todd from injury and Kansas transfer Skyler Messinger help fill the holes left by Mike Antico and Zach Zubia.

Texas will be tested early and often in 2022. The Horns will play 11 games against five teams ranked in D1Baseball’s top 25:

  • No. 19 Tennessee
  • No. 8 LSU
  • No. 14 Texas Tech
  • No. 17 TCU
  • No. 7 Oklahoma State
