Oklahoma falls to Kansas 8-7 in ten innings to even series

Oklahoma baseball dropped the second game of their series to Kansas falling 8-7 in ten innings on Saturday afternoon.

Oklahoma baseball returned to the home diamond on Saturday afternoon for the second of a three-game series against Big 12 opponent Kansas.

After taking the series opener on Friday night, the Sooners entered with a glimmer of momentum having taken two in a row after the rough patch previously. This game provided another opportunity to keep things rolling on home soil.

Getting the start for Oklahoma was left-hander Jake Bennett who didn’t have one his better outings of the season. After a solid first couple of scoreless innings, the third frame would prove to be his undoing.

Kansas would strike for five runs in the inning, capped off by a big three-run home run by catcher Anthony Tulimero. After the Sooners were turned away quietly in the bottom half of the frame, the Jayhawks took a 5-0 lead into the fourth.

It was at this point the Oklahoma bats would come alive with five straight hits to score four runs. Catcher Jimmy Crooks got things started with a moonshot home run to right field to get the Sooners on the board. Right fielder Brett Squires and second baseman Conor McKenna would both then later pick up doubles that scored three more runs collectively. Kansas was clinging to a 5-4 lead through four.

After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, the Jayhawks would tack on two more in the sixth on an RBI double by center fielder Tavian Josenberger – who would later come in to score on a grounder to first base. Josenberger was initially called out on a close play at the plate, but after review he was deemed safe and Kansas got another insurance run to lead things 7-4.

After trading scoreless turns at bat, the Sooners would draw closer in the bottom of the seventh on another home run to right field by Crooks – this one a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 7-6. Oklahoma would then get a couple more men on with two outs for the piping hot Squires, but his hard hit ball found the glove of Jayhawks right fielder Jack Wagner to end the threat.

After a lock down eighth inning from right-hander Carson Carter, the Sooners would then knot things up in the bottom half of the inning on a squeaker solo home run to right field off the bat of right fielder Peyton Graham. The game would head to the ninth all square at 7-7.

Closer Jason Ruffcorn would enter to try and keep things even and he would do just do that. After a deep fly ball to center for the first out, he would strike out the next two batters to send things to the bottom of the ninth with his team needing just a run to walk it off.

Crooks would work a one-out walk to get a man on base, but first baseman Tyler Hardman and left fielder Diego Muniz were unable to move him around for the winning run. The game would need an extra frame to determine a winner.

Ruffcorn would come back out to pitch the tenth, and would make a rare mistake offering up a solo home run to Kansas second baseman James Cosentino to put the Jayhawks in front 8-7. He would limit the damage there, but Oklahoma would head to the bottom half of the inning needing a run to stay alive. Unfortunately for Skip Johnson’s club, they weren’t able to do that being turned away 1-2-3 to fall in ten innings.

This is a pretty tough all-around loss for the Sooners in a game where they were so close to breaking through all day long. They played from behind essentially the entire game but always were threatening and never felt out of it, even after balling behind 5-0. But alas, they come up short and drop one that will be hard to swallow.

Now at 15-15 and 2-6 in conference play, Oklahoma will desperately look to take the rubber match tomorrow back at L. Dale Mitchell Park at 2:00 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma wins wild slugfest over Oral Roberts 14-12 to break losing skid

Oklahoma baseball got back in the win column Tuesday night winning a high-scoring battle over Oral Roberts 14-12.

Oklahoma baseball returned to L. Dale Mitchell Park on Tuesday night needing a win about as bad as possible. The Sooners entered play having dropped seven of their last eight games and seemingly having lost their way in just about all facets of the game, this was a big game to try and get right.

Awaiting them was in-state foe Oral Roberts, who despite being below .500 on the season had picked up multiple impressive wins throughout the year. The Golden Eagles are never an easy team to beat, and they were more than game for this one.

As has been the norm as of late, right-hander Javier Ramos was given the ball for Oklahoma to start the game, but he wouldn’t last long. He was only able to record a single out before being yanked in the opening frame, eventually being charged with four earned runs in the process.

The disaster opening inning would continue under the watch of the normally-effective Carson Carter, who came in out of the bullpen in a much earlier spot than we have often seen him. He would struggle to force soft contact allowing another four Oral Roberts runs to come across to have the Golden Eagles out to an 8-0 lead before the Sooners ever came to bat.

Oklahoma would do a good job making an immediate dent in that sizable early hole in the bottom half of the inning. After two batters were hit by a pitch and a walk was drawn, second baseman Conor McKenna cut loose for a grand slam to left field to chop the deficit in half at 8-4.

Oral Roberts would get two of those right back in the top of the second on a solo home run by left fielder Joshua Cox and an RBI single by the designated hitter Jordan Wiley. The Golden Eagles led 10-4 midway through two frames.

The Sooners, meanwhile, would put up another four spot in the bottom half of the inning on two-run hits by left fielder Diego Muniz and right fielder Brett Squires. In the first two innings of the game, 18 total runs were scored and just 12 total outs.

After both teams were turned away scoreless in the third, Squires would come up big once again with a mammoth two-run home run to left field to bring Oklahoma all the way back and tie the game up at 10-10. The game wouldn’t stay knotted up for long, though.

Oral Roberts shortstop Anthony Martinez would return the favor with a solo shot in the top of the fifth to put the Golden Eagles back on top. Catcher Alec Jones would then hit one of his own in the seventh to make it a 12-10 at the seventh inning stretch.

In the bottom half of the inning, after a walk drawn by shortstop Brandon Zaragoza and a single by the pinch-hitting Justin Mitchell, center fielder Tanner Tredaway lifted one up and over the wall right down the left field line for a three-run homer to put the Sooners in the lead 13-12.

After right-hander Luke Taggart pitched a clean top of the eighth, Oklahoma would add to their lead in the bottom half with catcher Jimmy Crooks coming across to score on a passed ball. The Sooners would take a 14-12 advantage into the final frame. Preseason All-American closer Jason Ruffcorn would come on and shut the door in the ninth to finish things off and get the much-needed win.

The win gets Oklahoma back to even on the season at 14-14 and it really can’t be overstated how important it was to put this game in the right column. After how rough the last couple of weeks have been, and falling behind 8-0 in the first inning, finding a way to rally and get this one is simply monumental for the team’s confidence moving forward.

The Sooners will now take a couple of days off before returning to L. Dale Mitchell Park for the first of a three-game set against Kansas on Friday night.

Oklahoma loses series finale to TCU 7-3 for home sweep, seventh loss in last eight games

Oklahoma baseball fell to TCU 7-3 Sunday afternoon for their seventh loss in the last eight games and suffer a series sweep.

Oklahoma baseball limped into Sunday’s series finale against No. 11/12/22/25 TCU needing a win about as bad as you could need one. After getting clobbered 17-6 by the Horned Frogs Saturday night, the Sooners had dropped six of their last seven games and had fallen all the way back down to .500 on the season.

Needing a good outing desperately, Skip Johnson turned to left-hander Braden Carmichael who did well in a similar spot just a week ago to help Oklahoma salvage the series and avoid a sweep against Texas. He was solid in this one, giving his team a chance to win, but got burnt late perhaps being left in the game just an inning too long.

Carmichael started off strong tossing three scoreless frames to open things up. Meanwhile, the Sooners were able to plate three runs in the second and third innings on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Conor McKenna and a two-run home run by first baseman Tyler Hardman to hold a 3-0 lead heading to the fourth.

It was at that point where Carmichael would run into serious problems for the first time, allowing the Horned Frogs to knot things up with three runs of their own on a two-run double by shortstop Tommy Sacco and an RBI single by left fielder Porter Brown.

The game would remain even at 3-3 into the seventh inning when TCU’s bats would come alive again on a trio of home runs. The first was a two-run shot off the bat of Brown to make it 5-3 and knock Carmichael out of the game. Oklahoma would then turn to one of their best relievers in right-hander Carson Carter, but he would serve up a pair of solo home runs to right fielder Phillip Sikes and third baseman Brayden Taylor to make the lead 7-3.

7-3 would go on to be the final score as the Horned Frogs completed the sweep of Oklahoma in Norman, dropping the Sooners below .500 on the season at 13-14 and just 1-5 in Big 12 play.

This rough patch for Oklahoma has gotten to a very tough point for the team, as this is their seventh loss in the last eight games. To say they have to find a way to turn things around soon would be a pretty big understatement, as their hopes for making much of this season are starting to hang on by a thread.

Granted playing Texas, Oklahoma State and TCU is certainly a difficult seven-game stretch on the schedule for just about any team in the country…but you still have to find a way to win more than once. You just have to. The next week is easily the biggest of the season to this point for the Sooners as they simply have to pick up wins to try to turn things around before any hope of NCAA Tournament berth is gone.

Luckily for the Sooners, they have many home games still coming up over the month of April to try and stock pile some wins and get momentum back. Next up is a date with in-state foe Oral Roberts on Tuesday night back at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Oklahoma gets drubbed by TCU 17-6, loses sixth of last seven games

Oklahoma baseball was blown out at home by TCU Saturday evening 17-6 for their sixth loss in the last seven games.

Oklahoma baseball’s struggles continued in a major way on Saturday getting hammered by TCU 17-6 at L. Dale Mitchell park for their sixth loss in the last seven games.

Jake Bennett (3-2), who has arguably been the Sooners most reliable starting pitcher, had massive problems in this one allowing an obscene eight runs and was unable to get through the second inning. He would go on to get handed the loss.

The Oklahoma bullpen didn’t fare much better, as Ben Abram, Jaret Godman, Dalton Fowler and Javier Ramos would allow nine more runs between the four of them over the rest of the game. The Horned Frogs held a 17-1 lead through seven and a half innings.

The Sooners wouldn’t go down without battling despite the score, managing five runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth to bring the final to 17-6. First baseman Tyler Hardman, left fielder Diego Muniz and center fielder Tanner Tredaway all picked up RBI hits and right fielder Brett Squires picked up his first home run of the season.

There really isn’t much to analyze with this game from an Oklahoma standpoint, the game was inarguably a disaster. After dropping the first game of the series, finding a way to bounce back and set up a rubber match on Sunday felt relatively important. This couldn’t have been all that much further from that as the game was essentially over before the Sooners came to the dish.

Now at 13-13 and 1-4 in conference play, Sunday’s series finale feels like the most important game of the season to date. Avoiding the home sweep is absolutely paramount.

When, where, how to watch and pitching matchups for Oklahoma baseball’s series against TCU

Everything you need to know for Oklahoma baseball’s three-game weekend set against TCU beginning Friday night.

Oklahoma (13-11, 1-2) has returned back to home soil for their first set of games in Norman since they took on Houston a couple of weeks ago. This will be the Sooners first home conference series of the season as awaiting them will be another tough foe in No. 11/12/22/25 TCU (17-7, 3-0).

The road swing wasn’t especially kind to Skip Johnson’s club, for after sweeping the Cougars to run their win streak to six in a row they dropped four of the five games played away from Norman including getting walked off by Oklahoma State in Stillwater earlier this week. The team enters this weekend looking for a good series to right the ship.

The Horned Frogs come into the weekend as one of the better teams in the country playing some really good baseball as of late. They have won each of their last six contests including a home sweep of Baylor in their first conference set last weekend. They also have a very impressive win over Mississippi State under their belt they picked up back in February.

For Oklahoma to be successful against another tough opponent, they will need to fair far better with runners in scoring position – something that has been an issue over the losing skid. Both Johnson and players expressed this week a necessary mentality change to do better in those situations moving forward.

This series will provide the 100th, 101st and 102nd all-time meetings between the Sooners and TCU, with Oklahoma leading historically 62-37. The Horned Frogs, however, took three of the four meetings between the two in 2019. TCU is coached by Jim Schlossnagle in his 18th year with the program.

Oklahoma drops first Bedlam game of the season 5-4 on Oklahoma State walk-off single

Oklahoma baseball dropped Bedlam 5-4 on Tuesday night in Stillwater on an Oklahoma State walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Oklahoma baseball entered Tuesday night on a bit of a rough stretch in the past week having dropped three of four games south of the Red River falling to Texas State on Wednesday and then dropping two of three against Texas over the weekend. Things hardly ever get much easier on the Big 12 schedule, as awaiting them next was Bedlam-foe No. 11/16/17 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, with the Sooners once again falling in a close one 5-4.

Oklahoma continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, missing a plethora of opportunities throughout the night to seize control. Eventually the missed chances caught up to them, with Cowboys center fielder Caeden Trenkle coming through with a walk-off RBI single to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Getting the ball for Skip Johnson was right-hander Javier Ramos, who did not have his best command and really struggled to find the zone. He allowed two runs to cross in the first inning and failed to record an out in the second before being pulled in favor of Ben Abram.

While the Sooners mightily struggled to pick up the big hits necessary throughout the evening, they were able to get runs early to build a lead through sacrifices and small ball. Four Oklahoma runs were plated in the second, fourth and fifth innings all by way of either a sacrifice fly or a run in on a fielder’s choice to give them a 4-2 advantage at the halfway point of the game.

Abram would do a fantastic job settling things down over the next few innings after he replaced Ramos, absolutely cruising through the fourth frame before running into some trouble in the fifth. He would be taken out with runners on first and second and nobody out in favor of Carson Carter, who would proceed to hit a batter before serving up a two-run knock to tie the game at 4-4.

But, Carter managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat and keep the game all square at the end of the inning. He would proceed to absolutely dominate the next three innings, but time and time again the Sooners missed golden opportunities to get the lead. Twice they had a man on third with nobody out and failed to bring him around, something you absolutely can’t do if you want to beat good teams consistently.

In the bottom of the ninth, Skip Johnson turned to right-hander Luke Taggart who wasn’t as bad as the box score may display given he didn’t record an out, but still certainly struggled. After a leadoff single, some high-quality bunting on the part of the Cowboys loaded the bases up with nobody out before Trenkle ripped a ball through the right side of the brought-in infield to bring home the game-winning run.

The loss drops Oklahoma to 13-11 on the year and is their fourth loss in their last five games after their best stretch of the season having won six in a row previously. Similar to the two losses to Texas in Austin, this was a game that was absolutely winnable and could haunt the Sooners down the line given the large amount of missed chances to get the big hit late in the game.

Given how streaky the sport of baseball can be in the long winding road of a season, it seems premature to put any kind of panic out at this point. But, this is yet another frustrating loss if you are Oklahoma, obviously, They have to find a way to take advantage when the chances are there late in the game. This has cost them multiple times recently in spots where they could have gotten very big resume-building wins.

These two teams have far from seen the last of each other, of course, as they will meet four more times throughout the year with the next coming a month from now back in Stillwater. As for this week’s slate, the Sooners will take a couple of needed days off to reset before hosting TCU for a weekend series beginning Friday night.

When, where, how to watch and pitching matchup for Bedlam baseball in Stillwater

Everything you need to know before Oklahoma baseball takes on No. 11/16/17 Oklahoma State on Tuesday night in Stillwater.

Oklahoma (13-10, 1-2) is returning to the diamond Tuesday night for the final game of a five-game road swing and the first of five Bedlam matchups this season against in-state rival No. 11/16/17 Oklahoma State (15-6-1, 4-2).

The Sooners had a bit of a tough stretch last week dropping three straight games before salvaging the first conference series of the year against Texas by taking the finale on Sunday. The Big 12 slate remains unforgiving, as Skip Johnson’s club now has to quickly turn around to deal with a very solid Cowboys team before hosting TCU this weekend.

Oklahoma State got off to a hot start to their 2021 campaign before running into a rough patch of their own dropping six of eight games from March 13-23. They are, however, fresh off of a home sweep of Kansas State over the weekend.

The Cowboys certainly pose another difficult challenge for Oklahoma as a ball club who has high aspirations for the season. This is also a matchup that is has gone heavily against the Sooners in recent years, with Oklahoma State having taken an astonishing 10 of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.

This matchup marks the 302nd all-time Bedlam baseball contest with the the Cowboys holding the historical edge 159-142. Should Oklahoma get the win, it would be their first victory in Stillwater since 2014. The Pokes are coached by Josh Holliday in his eighth year with the program.

For this huge midweek rivalry clash, here is everything you need to know:

PITCHING MATCHUP:   Oklahoma RHP Javier Ramos (1-0, 8.38) vs Oklahoma State RHP Bryce Osmond (2-1, 5.55)

WHEN:   6:00 p.m. CT

WHERE:   Stillwater, Oklahoma (O’Brate Stadium)

HOW TO WATCH:   Big 12 Now on ESPN+ (Dave Hunziker & Tom Holliday)

HOW TO LISTEN:   Sooner Sports Radio Network – Sportstalk 99.3 FM/1400 AM KREF; Tune In Radio App; Sporstalk1400.com (Toby Rowland)
