Josh Richardson diagnosed with concussion after leaving Clippers game

The shorthanded Sixers are dealing with more injury problems as Josh Richardson has been diagnosed with a concussion.

The shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers put up a valiant effort Sunday afternoon against the Los Angeles Clippers, coming up just short in a 136-130 loss. Unfortunately, the already injury-plagued Sixers didn’t make it out of the game healthy.

Josh Richardson left the game in the second quarter after colliding with teammate Alec Burks. Richardson sat on the court for an extended period of time before walking off with a towel covering his face. The Sixers quickly ruled Richardson out for the rest of the game with what was called a “nose contusion,” and now we have learned it’s a bit more serious than that as the team announced he has a concussion and has been placed in the league’s concussion protocol.

Obviously, this is the last thing the Sixers need right now as they are already without Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons and have another tough game against the Lakers coming up on Tuesday.

As Sixers Wire’s Ky Carlin notes, Richardson will be reassessed tomorrow, and hopefully, he will return sooner than later as the Sixers jockey for playoff positioning and try to build some momentum heading into the postseason. [lawrence-related id=26871,26854]

Joel Embiid to have surgery to repair torn ligament in hand

On Thursday, the Sixers got the news they were dreading regarding star big man Joel Embiid.

The injury news came fast and furious for the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. None of the news was good.

First, it was reported that the dislocated finger that star big man Joel Embiid suffered on Monday night resulted in a torn radial collateral ligament of the fourth metacarpal.

About an hour later, it was announced that Embiid would undergo surgery on Friday in New York, and would be re-evaluated in one-to-two weeks.

Any extended absence for Embiid is bad news for the Sixers, who have put themselves in a tough spot with their uneven play over the first two months of the season.

Prior to the announcement of the surgery, Sixers Insider Jon Johnson reported that a sprain of that ligament can take 3-6 weeks to heal, while a tear can take 2-3 times as long. Clearly, the hope is that having the injury surgically repaired will cut down on that recovery time.

Prior to today’s news, there was hope that the fact that Embiid returned to the game in which the injury occurred meant the injury wouldn’t be too serious. However, the fact that Embiid spent the last two days seeing specialists hinted that unpleasant news may be coming.

It’s terrible news for the Sixers, who are in a serious battle for playoff positioning. Hopefully, the surgery can cut down on Embiid’s recovery time and his teammates can handle business until he returns. Al Horford will certainly have an opportunity to demonstrate his value to the Sixers in Embiid’s absence. [lawrence-related id=23106]

Tobias Harris questionable against Heat with hip soreness

Sixers forward Tobias Harris popped up on the injury report Saturday afternoon ahead of a big game against the Miami Heat.

The Philadelphia 76ers will look to quickly bounce back from a disappointing performance against the Orlando Magic Friday night when they take on the Heat in Miami on Saturday night. The afternoon injury report indicates that task may be a bit more difficult than originally expected.

Per the Inquirer’s Keith Pompey, Sixers forward Tobias Harris is listed as questionable for the game against the Heat with “right hip soreness.” The news comes as somewhat of a surprise after Harris played 36 minutes against the Magic on Friday and there were no indications after the game that he was dealing with any kind of discomfort.

Harris played a decent game against the Magic, scoring 24 points to go with 11 rebounds and three assists. After a slow start to the season, he has been playing at a near All-Star level over the past five weeks or so, playing like the player the Sixers expected him to be when they signed him to a five year, $180 million contract last summer.

For the season, Harris is averaging 19.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

Despite it only being December, Saturday presents a pretty big game for the Sixers. Not only do they want to quickly get the taste of Friday’s disappointing showing out of their mouths, but the Heat currently sit a game and a half ahead of the Sixers in the Eastern Conference standings as a handful of teams jockey for spots two through six in the conference while trying to close ground on the Milwaukee Bucks. Saturday’s game is one the Sixers would really like to win, and being at full strength would certainly be welcomed.

Harris’ status is something to keep an eye on as we approach the 8:00 PM tipoff. [lawrence-related id=22328,22309]

Joel Embiid out with illness Sunday night against Nets

The Sixers will officially be without star center Joel Embiid on Sunday night.

On Sunday evening, the Philadelphia 76ers will put a five-game winning streak on the line when they take the court against the Brooklyn Nets. And they will do so without their franchise big man, Joel Embiid, who has been ruled out with what is being called a “respiratory illness.”

Embiid popped up on the injury report earlier Sunday afternoon, where he had a “doubtful” designation.

With Embiid confirmed as out, it will be interesting to see if Al Horford returns from his recent absence and what the starting lineup will look like without Embiid and possibly Horford. Regardless, it’s likely Mike Scott, Kyle O’Quinn, and Norvel Pelle will see a bump in minutes.

Embiid has played well over the past week after being criticized by Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley on the TNT broadcast.

The Nets enter the game with a 13-12 record. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Al Horford questionable Thursday night against Celtics

The Sixers forward’s return to Boston is in question due to knee soreness and hamstring tightness.

New Philadelphia 76ers forward Al Horford was set to play in Boston Thursday night for the first time since leaving the Celtics to sign with the Sixers this summer. Now, it looks like that homecoming might be in jeopardy.

Per the Inquirer’s Keith Pompey, Horford is now listed as questionable for the key matchup between division rivals. Pompey reports that the forward’s status is in doubt due to left knee soreness and left hamstring tightness, ailments for which he underwent treatment this morning. Pompey also notes that Horford did go through shootaround, which would seem to indicate that Horford will try to play.

Horford spent three seasons in Boston, becoming a fan favorite along the way. He averaged 13.5 points, seven rebounds, and 4.6 assists for the Celtics.

From a Sixers perspective, it would certainly be nice to have Horford on the court. Despite it only being early December, Thursday’s matchup holds plenty of importance. The Sixers and Celtics currently sit tied four games back of the Eastern Conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks. Boston is 17-6 while the Sixers are 18-7.

Stay tuned to Sixers Wire for updates on Horford’s status as game time approaches. [lawrence-related id=21127,21109]

Josh Richardson out for remainder of Kings game with hamstring tightness

Sixers guard Josh Richardson did not start the second half Wednesday night and the team subsequently announced he would not return.

The Philadelphia 76ers find themselves locked in a tight contest with the Sacramento Kings Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Center, and they will now be trying to secure the victory and preserve their perfect record at home without one of their starters.

The team announced that guard Josh Richardson would not return to the game after suffering right hamstring tightness. You probably recall Richardson recently missed a pair of games with what was called right hip flexor tightness. It’s unclear if Wednesday’s ailment is a reappearance of that issue or is related in any way, but it’s worth noting that the latest issue is in the same area as the previous one.

Richardson did stay on the bench in uniform, so hopefully, this is more precautionary than anything else. We’ll have to wait for an update from the team after the game to gain some clarity on if the issues are related.

Furkan Korkmaz started the second half in Richardson’s place, and Matisse Thybulle has seen increased minutes in the third quarter as well.

Sixers rookie Marial Shayok out for Blue Coats on Thursday

The Sixers’ second-round pick has excelled in Delaware through the early part of the G League season.

Wednesday has been a day of injury news for the Philadelphia 76ers, and it’s not just affecting the NBA club.

After the team announced that Josh Richardson would miss Wednesday night’s game against the Knicks with right hip flexor tightness, word came from Delaware that Blue Coats standout Marial Shayok will miss Thursday’s game against the College Park Shyhawks after suffering a right quad contusion in a game Tuesday night. The news was reported by the Inquirer’s Keith Pompey.

While the severity of the injury is unclear, it’s still terrible news for Shayok, the Blue Coats, and the Sixers as Shayok has been on a tear to start the season.

The 54th overall pick in June’s NBA Draft, Shayok has been thriving in Delaware and turning some heads in the process. His hot start earned him G League Player of the Week honors after averaging 35 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. He is currently second in the G League in scoring at 29.5 points per game.

The early returns have been promising, and it looks like the Sixers may have found a gem in Shayok. Hopefully, the injury won’t sideline him for long and he can get back to developing his game as he tries to become a contributor for the Sixers. [lawrence-related id=19474,19331,19121,18971,18790]

Josh Richardson out Wednesday against Knicks with hip tightness

The Sixers will be without Josh Richardson on Wednesday night for the first time this season.

[jwplayer oxAdaBIS-z6KDnl0B]

When the Philadelphia 76ers take the court Wednesday night to take on their I-95 rival the New York Knicks, they will be doing so without a member of their starting five. Josh Richardson will miss the game with what is being called right hip flexor tightness, as reported by Sixers Insider Jon Johnson.

The news is somewhat of a surprise, as Richardson showed no signs of injury or discomfort on Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In addition, he produced his best scoring output of the season last Friday against the Oklahoma City Thunder with 28 points. We will have to wait for more information regarding when the hip started bothering him, but we do know he won’t play on Wednesday.

As Johnson reports, Richardson is set to be re-evaluated on Thursday ahead of Friday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs. Richardson is considered day-to-day.

Richardson and Tobias Harris had been the only members of the starting five yet to miss a game this season, and now Harris will carry that designation solo. Richardson is averaging 14.8 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.7 rebounds so far this season.

Furkan Korkmaz will likely replace Richardson in the starting lineup. Stay tuned for updates on Richardson’s status. [lawrence-related id=19654,19371,19021,19007]
