Joel Embiid listed as ‘questionable’ for Tuesday against Warriors

Sixers star Joel Embiid appears close to making his return, which could come as early as Tuesday night.

The Philadelphia 76ers received some encouraging news on the injury front Monday afternoon as star big man Joel Embiid is officially listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors.

The big man has missed the last nine games with a torn radial collateral ligament in his finger, an injury he sustained on January 6 against the Thunder. Embiid finished that game, but later had surgery to repair the injury.

It was yet another setback for Embiid and complicated things for a Sixers team that has demonstrated frustrating inconsistency over the first half of the season. As a result, instead of competing for the top seed in the East, the Sixers find themselves battling a handful of teams for spots two through six.

As Sixers Wire’s own Ky Carlin notes, Embiid will see the doctor who performed his surgery on Tuesday to determine if he will be able to go against the Warriors.

The Sixers have gone 6-3 in Embiid’s absence, with Ben Simmons picking up the slack in a big way. Still, getting Embiid back will be a welcomed result for the team as it tries to find its grove, make a push up the standings, and get rolling for what it hopes will be a legitimate title run.

Embiid is averaging 23.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.4 blocks this season and was just named to his third straight All-Star team.

Regardless if Embiid makes his return Tuesday, Monday’s news indicates he will be back on the floor sooner than later, and that is good news for the Sixers.

Joel Embiid to have surgery to repair torn ligament in hand

On Thursday, the Sixers got the news they were dreading regarding star big man Joel Embiid.

The injury news came fast and furious for the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. None of the news was good.

First, it was reported that the dislocated finger that star big man Joel Embiid suffered on Monday night resulted in a torn radial collateral ligament of the fourth metacarpal.

About an hour later, it was announced that Embiid would undergo surgery on Friday in New York, and would be re-evaluated in one-to-two weeks.

Any extended absence for Embiid is bad news for the Sixers, who have put themselves in a tough spot with their uneven play over the first two months of the season.

Prior to the announcement of the surgery, Sixers Insider Jon Johnson reported that a sprain of that ligament can take 3-6 weeks to heal, while a tear can take 2-3 times as long. Clearly, the hope is that having the injury surgically repaired will cut down on that recovery time.

Prior to today’s news, there was hope that the fact that Embiid returned to the game in which the injury occurred meant the injury wouldn’t be too serious. However, the fact that Embiid spent the last two days seeing specialists hinted that unpleasant news may be coming.

It’s terrible news for the Sixers, who are in a serious battle for playoff positioning. Hopefully, the surgery can cut down on Embiid’s recovery time and his teammates can handle business until he returns. Al Horford will certainly have an opportunity to demonstrate his value to the Sixers in Embiid’s absence. [lawrence-related id=23106]

Joel Embiid ruled out Thursday against Celtics with finger injury

Sixers big man Joel Embiid will miss Thursday’s clash with the rival Celtics due to his dislocated finger.

On Thursday night, the Philadelphia 76ers face a big game when they host the rival Boston Celtics. On Wednesday afternoon, we learned that the path to winning that game will be a little tougher than anticipated as it was announced that star big man Joel Embiid will miss the game due to his dislocated finger.

After Embiid returned to the game against the Thunder on Monday when the injury occurred, the feeling was that he would be okay. However, after the game he mentioned the possibility of missing Thursday’s game. After he missed practice on Tuesday while getting off-site testing on the finger, doubt started to creep in. And today we got the news we were hoping to avoid.

It’s certainly a blow to the Sixers. Their uneven play over the early part of the season has left them in a battle for positioning in the Eastern Conference, where they currently sit fifth. They are three games behind the Celtics, so Thursday’s game definitely carries some weight.

We’ll have to wait and see how much time Embiid will ultimately miss, but for now his Sixers face a daunting challenge on Thursday without him.

Joel Embiid undergoes further testing for his dislocated finger

Sixers star Joel Embiid missed practice Tuesday as he got further testing on his dislocated finger.

After suffering an ugly-looking finger injury during Monday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid simply got the finger reset and taped and returned to the game, contributing 18 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists in the team’s 120-113 win.

After the game, Embiid admitted that the injury was painful and that it was limiting him on the court, particularly when trying to rebound. He also left the door open to it causing him to miss Thursday’s game with the Celtics.

On Tuesday, Embiid missed practice as he was undergoing further testing on the finger at an off-site location.

At this point, it’s tough to draw any real conclusions as to what that means for Embiid’s status for Thursday. It makes sense that the team wants to take an abundance of caution with their franchise big man and would try to gather as much information as possible before making any decisions.

With that big game against the Celtics rapidly approaching, we’ll be waiting for updates on the big man.

Joel Embiid says ‘it’s a possibility’ he’ll miss game against Celtics

Sixers’ big man Joel Embiid toughed it out on Monday against the Thunder, but his status for Thursday against the Celtics is up in the air.

The Philadelphia 76ers got a much-needed win Monday night when they beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 120-113. But the win may have come at a cost.

Sixers star Joel Embiid was forced to leave the game with a dislocated finger. Despite the gruesome appearance of the injury, Embiid returned to the game and produced 18 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists while committing just two turnovers.

Embiid admitted after the game that the injury was causing him quite a bit of pain and was impacting his ability to rebound the ball, but he wanted to be out there to help his teammates as the Sixers tried to snap their losing streak. He also noted that there was a possibility that the injury could keep him out of Thursday’s matchup with the rival Celtics.

Despite it only being January, Thursday’s contest represents an important game for the Sixers. The team’s recent struggles, combined with other missed opportunities against lesser opponents, have reduced its margin for error. Philadelphia currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, three games behind the Celtics. They would certainly prefer to have their star big man available.

It was good to see Embiid tough it out and return to the game on Monday, and hopefully he will be able to do the same on Thursday. We’ll be keeping an eye on his status over the next few days.
