The Philadelphia 76ers have strategically bolstered their lineup this offseason to contend strongly in the Eastern Conference. With the addition of Paul George, the dynamic within the team shifts, allowing Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to maximize their roles, with George serving as a crucial third scoring option. This restructuring aims to optimize Embiid’s performance, particularly in the postseason.

By managing Maxey’s contract extension to maintain a lower cap hit, the team successfully signed impactful players like George and Caleb Martin, and brought back Andre Drummond. Martin’s four-year, $32 million deal underscores his value as a versatile role player, while Drummond provides a strong rebounding presence. Veteran Eric Gordon, acquired on a minimum deal, adds depth to the lineup, complementing the re-signings of Kelly Oubre Jr. and Kyle Lowry, which solidify the bench.

This season, the Sixers are poised not just to compete, but to challenge for the top, especially if Embiid and George stay healthy.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps claims Sixers are biggest threat to Celtics

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps claims the Philadelphia 76ers are the biggest threat to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference.

The Philadelphia 76ers have waited for this moment. They spent all season telling Joel Embiid to be patient and that they would go out and get the best player available in free agency due to the cap space they possess.

They came through on that school of thought as they were able to lure Paul George away from the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency. The Sixers agreed on a 4-year $212 million deal to bring George in to join Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to chase down the defending champion Boston Celtics in the East.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps hopped on “Get Up” praising the Sixers for their move and saying that they are the biggest threats to the Celtics in the East:

The Sixers now have the best Big 3 in the NBA. It’s really not close. With the three guys have now, all of them were All-Stars last year. You’ve got a lead guard in Maxey, got an elite two-way wing in Paul George, you got maybe the most dominant big in the league and Joel Embiid. They fit together perfectly. They complement each other in every way on the court. They’re versatile. Paul George an elite shooter. You have two elite shooters now giving spacing around Embiid. They can go out and get any kind of role players that can fit alongside them. They’re versatile in a lot of ways. They have the highest ceiling now of any team in the league, but the Boston Celtics, and they can go toe to toe with the Celtics depending on how healthy these guys are, which is obviously the biggest question.

Health will absolutely be the biggest question mark with this group. Obviously, Embiid has a vast injury history, but so does George. It will be interesting to see how the Sixers handle the regular season with these two leading the way. Coach Nick Nurse has a history with an oft injured star–Kawhi Leonard–so it will be interesting to see what happens next for the Sixers.

Report: Klay Thompson planning to have discussions with 4 teams in free agency

The four-time champion is reportedly planning on having discussions with four teams at the start of free agency.

All signs point to the end of the legendary Klay Thompson era with the Golden State Warriors.

Multiple reports have indicated that Thompson and the Warriors are set to part ways this summer after 13 years and four championships. The veteran sharpshooter is rumored to suit up in a new uniform for the first time in his career.

Shortly after the NBA’s free agency window opened on Sunday, Thompson is reportedly planning to have discussions with four teams. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Thompson is planning to have discussions with the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Via @wojespn on Twitter:

Shams Charania of The Athletic is reporting Thompson and the Warriors are exploring different sign-and-trade options. If the Warriors and Thompson’s preferred destination can agree to a sign and trade, Golden State could potentially acquire players or draft compensation.

Via @ShamsCharania on Twitter:

In his final season with the Warriors, Thompson averaged 17.9 points on 43.2% shooting from the floor and 38.7% from beyond the arc to go along with 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 29.7 minutes per game.

Sixers consulting Commanders on how to handle day 2 of NBA draft

The Philadelphia 76ers are consulting the Washington Commanders on how to handle day 2 of the NBA draft.

There will be a new wrinkle in the 2024 NBA draft with it being a two-day event rather than one night. In the past, both rounds of the draft would be conducted in just one night, but this year, the draft is two days.

It’s a little different for teams who are so used to having everything done in one night so some have hit up some teams in the NFL to see how things are done. The NFL draft is three days so those teams understand how something like this works.

The Philadelphia 76ers, who are governed by Josh Harris and David Blitzer of Harris & Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, have been in collaboration with the Washington Commanders to get advice on what to do on day 2 on Thursday.

Per Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports:

The Philadelphia 76ers are owned by a managing group spearheaded by Joshua Harris, who’s also led a recent acquisition of the Washington Commanders. All teams under the Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment umbrella regularly collaborate, and the Sixers and Commanders held a meeting about how to approach the second night of this year’s NBA Draft, according to one source with knowledge of those discussions. Philadelphia is slated to pick at No. 41 on Thursday night.

It will be interesting to see how the Sixers handle this type of draft process. Round 1 of the draft is set for Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. EDT while Round 2 is set for Thursday at 4 p.m. EDT.

Sixers hold workout for USC’s Isaiah Collier before NBA draft

Isaiah Collier in Philadelphia? Intriguing.

USC guard Isaiah Collier will know in a few days where he will begin his NBA career. The NBA draft will shape Collier’s future. Let’s see what’s being projected just before the main event. One team which has shown enough interest in Collier to hold a workout for him is the Philadelphia Sixers. The 76ers need to get over the hump in the Eastern Conference. One wonders if Collier is actually part of their NBA draft plans.

Sixers Wire has more on this story:

“The Sixers have conducted some predraft workouts. They have looked at prospects such as Baylor big man Yves Missi as well as Uconn’s Tristen Newton. Now, according to reports, they have brought in USC’s Isaiah Collier for a predraft workout, too as they are covering all their bases. Collier averaged 16.3 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.9 rebounds as a freshman at USC. He shot 49% from the floor and 33.8% from deep as he showed off some real offensive game throughout his collegiate season. One has to like his fit next to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey if the Sixers were to go this route.”

Officials didn’t help, but Sixers played into their own demise in Game 2

The officials didn’t help the situation, but the Philadelphia 76ers played into their own demise in the Game 2 loss to the New York Knicks.

NEW YORK — The Philadelphia 76ers had it. They had Game 2 against the New York Knicks in their grasp.

Tyrese Maxey hit a 3 with 1:09 left to put Philadelphia up four. The Sixers then produced a stop, and Kyle Lowry made a free-throw to put Philadelphia up five with 47.3 seconds to go.

Then, chaos.

Jalen Brunson made a side-step triple that hit the front of the rim and bounced into the air before dropping to pull New York within two, 101-99.

The Sixers then had trouble getting the ball in. Nick Nurse claimed he called timeout and the officials didn’t grant him one. It also appeared Maxey was fouled by Brunson on the inbounds pass. He didn’t get a call.

Maxey lost the ball in the corner. New York’s Josh Hart picked it up and found Donte DiVincenzo wide-open on the wing. He missed the 3-point attempt, but Isaiah Hartenstein grabbed the offensive rebound and the ball found DiVincenzo for a 3 to give the Knicks a 102-101 lead with 13.0 seconds left on their way to a 104-101 win.

Two separate things can be true:

  • The officials messed up and didn’t help the situation. Philadelphia has every right to file that grievance with the league.
  • If the Sixers had just grabbed a rebound off the DiVincenzo miss, they would have won the game and rendered everything else pointless.

Afterward, Joel Embiid ripped the officials and guaranteed the Sixers would win this series against the Knicks. The sentiment is great. Philadelphia should want its leader to speak like this. However, the Sixers played into their own demise.

A big factor was once again rebounding. Philadelphia did a great job of rebounding overall compared to Game 1, but it came down to Hartenstein crashing and grabbing the critical rebound. That led to the DiVincenzo go-ahead 3. If the Sixers grab that rebound, then they win the game.

The Sixers are not out of this series. At all. They’re down 2-0, but they have two huge games at home that they have to win. Philadelphia has been right there in both games 1 and 2.

The excuses and blaming the officiating have to stop. The Sixers had their chance in Game 2. Even with the chaotic possession, DiVincenzo missed that initial triple. The Sixers needed to grab that rebound and that would have won the game.

Sixers vs. Knicks Round 1 schedule: Complete dates, times for series

The Round 1 schedule for the Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks has been released with dates and times.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the playoffs following their play-in tournament win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday evening. They received a big performance from Nic Batum that swayed the game in their favor, and they are the No. 7 seed in the East heading into the playoffs.

That means they get a matchup with the New York Knicks who earned the No. 2 seed in the East. Led by dynamic guard Jalen Brunson and numerous physical players with great chemistry, the Knicks will be a challenge for Philadelphia.

With that being said, the schedule is out for the series and it goes like this:

  • Game 1: April 20 at Knicks 6 p.m. EDT
  • Game 2: April 22 at Knicks 7:30 p.m. EDT
  • Game 3: April 25 vs. Knicks 7:30 p.m. EDT
  • Game 4: April 28 vs. Knicks 1 p.m. EDT
  • *Game 5: April 30 at Knicks TBD
  • *Game 6: May 2 vs. Knicks TBD
  • *Game 7: May 4 at Knicks TBD

*if necessary

The Sixers will lean on Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to lead the way and help Philadelphia go on a deep playoff run in the Eastern Conference.

Pistons fall to Celtics, tie the Sixers for consecutive NBA loss record

The Detroit Pistons fall to the Boston Celtics to tie the Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing skid in NBA history at 28.

The Philadelphia 76ers are no longer alone.

During The Process era, the Sixers dropped 28 consecutive games starting at the end of the 2014-15 season and into the beginning of the 2015-16 season. Philadelphia dropped its final 10 games of the 2014-15 season and then started the 2015-16 season on an 18-game losing skid.

It stood as the longest losing streak in U.S. professional sports history.

Now, the Detroit Pistons have joined them.

The Pistons dropped their 28th consecutive game on Thursday: a 128-122 overtime road loss to the Boston Celtics. Detroit led by as many as 21 before the Celtics stormed back to force overtime and win.

Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 31 points and Jaden Ivey had 22 for the Pistons.

The Pistons take on the Toronto Raptors at home on Saturday. That will be their next opportunity to end the streak. If they fall again, the Sixers will no longer have a record that nobody wants.

Pistons fall to Nets, tie Sixers for longest losing streak in history

The Detroit Pistons fall to the Brooklyn Nets and tie the 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing streak in NBA history.

The 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers have more company.

The Detroit Pistons fell to the host Brooklyn Nets, 125-103, on Saturday night. Their 26th loss in a row ties the Sixers and 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers for the longest losing streak in a single season.

The 2013-14 Sixers, who were at the beginning of The Process years, lost 26 in a row from Jan. 31, 2014 through March 27, 2014.

The difference between these Pistons and those Sixers and Cavs teams: Detroit is trying to win. The effort has been there, but the Pistons have not been able to overcome the obstacles in their way.

The Sixers hold the record for most losses in a row overall: 28, a streak that spanned the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

The Pistons next two games are against the Nets at home on Tuesday and the Boston Celtics on the road on Dec. 28.
