Celtics training camp invitee Jake Layman headed to Greece?

The potential move to Athens seems to be awaiting only hearing back for certain from whatever NBA ball clubs Layman’s agent may be in conversation with.

Boston Celtics camp invitee Jake Layman may soon be headed to play overseas in Greece according to new reporting from SDNA’s Tolis Kotzias (via BasketNews). Per Kotzias, the former Maryland player will end up playing for Panathinaikos Athens if “nothing changes in the near future,” presumably with regard to an offer by another NBA team.

The potential move to Athens seems to be waiting only for Layman’s agent to hear back from whatever NBA clubs he may be in conversation with. Reports have said Panathinaikos and Layman have already agreed on terms.

The 28-year-old didn’t work out with Boston. His brief appearances in the Celtics’ preseason games were not noteworthy, but over 243 games played across six seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves, the Norwood, Massachusetts, native averaged 4.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.

Report: There ‘does not seem to be an extension coming’ for Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams

Fans shouldn’t worry too much about the lack of extension as the Charlotte native will remain a restricted free agent regardless.

The Boston Celtics are unlikely to extend reserve forward Grant Williams before the Oct. 17 deadline to get the deal done by according to new reporting from Yahoo’s Jake Fischer. In a recent article by the Yahoo NBA insider, the Tennessee product’s prospects of landing a significant pay boost before the cutoff date ahead of the start of the 2022-23 NBA season appears to be at a standstill.

While the former Vol had an infamously poor start to his career with a historic case of the 3-point yips, he has since transformed himself into one of the better marksmen in the league as he has continually added to his game in other areas.

That growth has made Williams an important part of Boston’s rotation, but fans shouldn’t worry too much about the lack of extension as the Charlotte native will remain a restricted free agent regardless.

Additionally, the team may prefer to have flexibility with Williams’ salary should they want to include him in a deal for an as-of-yet-unknown star player becoming available for trade during this season.

Report: Boston Celtics interested in Frank Vogel, Terry Stotts as assistant coaching targets

There is reportedly internal skepticism Boston can convince either to serve under interim head coach Joe Mazzulla, however.

The Boston Celtics reportedly have their eye on a pair of former NBA head coaches to help guide interim head coach Joe Mazzulla through a season in which the Celtics are hoping to contend for a title, according to recent reporting from Substack’s Marc Stein. In the wake of head coach Ime Udoka’s suspension, the team has been inquiring after potential additions to Boston’s bench.

Per Stein’s most recent newsletter, “the Celts are … interested in two of the top available former head coaches — Frank Vogel and Terry Stotts — but pessimistic about their chances of luring either to usher the unproven Mazzulla through this massive step up onto the big stage.”

After striking out with former Boston and current Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Jay Larranaga, the Celtics may hope to land a high-profile assistant with head coaching experience.

But, at this time of the NBA calendar year, such candidates are typically difficult to find unemployed.

Woj: Boston Celtics to sign Blake Griffin to fully-guaranteed, one-year deal

Griffin was previously on Boston’s radar as a potential bench option, but ultimately chose the Brooklyn Nets after being warned of a chaotic situation, ironically, within the Celtics.

Based on new reporting from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, it seems the Boston Celtics will be turning to a veteran big man for help weather the absence of starting center Robert Williams III after all.

Per Wojnarowski, the Celtics will sign veteran big man Blake Griffin to a one-year, fully guaranteed contract. The 33-year-old, 6-foot-9 power forward and center has found new life in a second act to his career by developing an away-from-the-basket game to compliment his passing to help make up for declining defensive skills.

With both Timelord and veteran swingman Danilo Gallinari both out at the start of the season and expected to miss considerable time, there will be plenty of opportunity for the Oklahoma product to see the floor in the regular season.

Griffin was previously on Boston’s radar as a potential bench option, but ultimately chose the Brooklyn Nets after being warned of a chaotic situation, ironically, within the Celtics.

He has averaged 7.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game with Brooklyn over the last two seasons while shooting 30.5% from deep.

Celtics reportedly ‘not planning’ to sign a big-name veteran free agent

Instead, The Athletic’s Jay King reports Boston will add another name to their list of camp invites to compete for a roster spot.

Those among the fans of the Boston Celtics who hoped to see the ball club sign a veteran big man to shore up their shaky frontcourt rotation in the news of the looming clean-up surgery for starting center Robert Williams III will be disappointed with new reporting from The Athletic’s Jay King.

The Athletic reporter relates that the Celtics are “not planning to sign one of the big-name veteran centers still available” and that we ought to expect the Celtics to “replace the recently waived Bruno Caboclo with another young big man to compete for a spot in training camp.”

While no obvious name pops out at as a likely candidate, it does signal a degree of confidence regarding Timelord’s return — and with camp practically upon us, it should not be a lingering mystery.

Report: Onetime Celtic Isaiah Thomas working out with Los Angeles Lakers for 2022-23 roster spot

IT reportedly joined Armoni Brooks, Sharife Cooper, Mychal Mulder, Shabazz Muhammad, Jeremy Lamb. Dwayne Bacon, and Miye Oni in working out with L.A.

The Boston Celtics’ longtime rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, are loading up on rotation players from what solid options remain on the market. After signing one former Boston point guard, Dennis Schroder, it seems the Lakers could bring on board another.

HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported former Celtics floor general Isaiah Thomas has “worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers along with several players, including Armoni Brooks, Sharife Cooper, Mychal Mulder and others” which include “former lottery picks Shabazz Muhammad and Jeremy Lamb. Dwayne Bacon (and) Miye Oni”.

It is unclear how the Schroder signing might affect the Lakers’ plans, but if the franchise does plan to move off veteran guard Russell Westbrook, Thomas as the team’s third point guard could make sense for Los Angeles.

As could IT’s shooting if he is able to recapture the 39.7% rate he was hitting in his NBA stint with the Charlotte Hornets last season.

Ex-Boston big man Tristan Thompson a potential Brooklyn Nets signing target

As the Nets look to fill out their roster for 2022-23 in the wake of the end of the KD trade request saga, Thompson is reportedly a player to keep an eye on.

Another unsigned Boston Celtics alumnus might find himself a home playing with the Brooklyn Nets. The team is looking to add frontcourt depth after star forward Kevin Durant rescinded his trade request earlier this week, according to new reporting from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Ex-Boston big man Tristan Thompson played 54 games for the Celtics before he was dealt to the Sacramento Kings as part of the deal that brought back reserve guard Kris Dunn and backup big man Bruno Fernando in 2021. The Canadian center has since played with the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls but has remained unsigned after his contract with the Bulls expired at the end of the 2021-22 season.

With little in the way of proven depth in the frontcourt beyond Nick Claxton and Ben Simmons, bringing on sturdier bigs able to hold their own with some of the larger bodies in the NBA would make sense for Brooklyn moving forward.
