Report: Boston Celtics interested in Frank Vogel, Terry Stotts as assistant coaching targets

There is reportedly internal skepticism Boston can convince either to serve under interim head coach Joe Mazzulla, however.

The Boston Celtics reportedly have their eye on a pair of former NBA head coaches to help guide interim head coach Joe Mazzulla through a season in which the Celtics are hoping to contend for a title, according to recent reporting from Substack’s Marc Stein. In the wake of head coach Ime Udoka’s suspension, the team has been inquiring after potential additions to Boston’s bench.

Per Stein’s most recent newsletter, “the Celts are … interested in two of the top available former head coaches — Frank Vogel and Terry Stotts — but pessimistic about their chances of luring either to usher the unproven Mazzulla through this massive step up onto the big stage.”

After striking out with former Boston and current Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Jay Larranaga, the Celtics may hope to land a high-profile assistant with head coaching experience.

But, at this time of the NBA calendar year, such candidates are typically difficult to find unemployed.

Kenny Atkinson turns down head coaching job in Charlotte

Adrian Wojnarowski: ESPN Sources: Kenny Atkinson has decided he won’t become the Charlotte Hornets’ head coach and will remain with Golden State as top assistant. After being offered job during the NBA Finals, further conversations led Atkinson to believe it would be best to remain with Warriors.

If Utah ends up interviewing more than …

If Utah ends up interviewing more than 20 candidates for its coaching vacancy, no one in the coaching community will be surprised. Jazz CEO Danny Ainge loves intel and will surely amass plenty by the time Utah names its successor to Quin Snyder. Utah’s only known candidates with NBA head coaching experience on a list already in the teens are Terry Stotts and Frank Vogel.

Jazz receive permission to interview several assistant coaches

Adrian Wojnarowski: ESPN Sources: The Jazz received permission to interview several assistant coaches for head job, including Johnnie Bryant (Knicks), Will Hardy (Celtics), Charles Lee (Bucks), and Joe Mazzulla (Celtics). Jazz assistant Alex Jensen and Terry Stotts will interview too.

With Quin Snyder stepping down, Terry Stotts would be an obvious name to look at. But I think the Jazz take their time and conduct a thorough search. I also think they will be open to considering assistants – 6:09 PM

As for candidates for the sixth head coach in team history… my informed speculation might point to Terry Stotts, among others. – 5:39 PM

Two-time Coach of the Year Mike …

Two-time Coach of the Year Mike D’Antoni and former Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts are among the other finalists in the Hornets’ coaching search that started in late April when the team fired James Borrego. Neither D’Antoni nor Stotts has so far advanced to the Jordan stage of the process, sources said, but that possibility remains.

Terry Stotts reportedly not interested in assistant coach role

Terry Stotts, one of the final assistants for the Lakers’ head coaching job, doesn’t want to join Darvin Ham’s staff.

Now that the Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly hired Darvin Ham to be their next head coach, the next item of business is for him to decide who to hire to his staff.

It appears Ham will be given autonomy to pick his own assistants, which seems to be a change from how the Lakers have operated in the recent past.

When they last looked for a head coach in 2019, senior basketball adviser Kurt Rambis reportedly wanted to dictate who would be hired as assistants, which prompted Ty Lue and Monty Williams to turn down the job.

Former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts, who was one of L.A.’s final three candidates along with Ham, made it clear during the interview process that he would not be interested in being an assistant should he lose out on the head coaching job.

Via Los Angeles Times:

“According to sources, Stotts was asked previously if he would have interest in joining the Lakers as an assistant should he not be hired as a head coach. Stotts, sources said, told the team that he has no interest in a role as a lead assistant.

“Stotts was approached about joining Frank Vogel in that role last season on the Lakers’ bench and also declined, sources said.”

Stotts had been at the helm of the Blazers for nine seasons before leaving following the 2020-21 campaign. He is regarded as a stellar offensive tactician, which would’ve made him a nice addition to Ham’s staff.

Most of the front office, it seems, has …

Most of the front office, it seems, has zeroed in on Darvin Ham, with former head coaches Terry Stotts (Portland) and Kenny Atkinson (Brooklyn) also in the mix. Ham was briefly an assistant with the Lakers, and according to league sources, he is the favorite of the Phil Jackson-Kurt Rambis layer of Lakers decision-makers. “I think those guys want a young coach they can mold a little bit,” one Western Conference executive told Heavy.com. “I do not think Darvin is a pushover by any means. I just think that they want a guy they can point in the direction they want to go, more traditional basketball, using Russell Westbrook a certain way.”
