Listen to how late the whistle was on the controversial Patriots’ sack of Patrick Mahomes

It’s difficult to justify this call on the field.

One of the lingering topics from the New England Patriots’ Monday night matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs was a would-be interception against Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes was sacked by Chase Winovich and it appeared he fumbled, but Shilique Calhoun caught the ball and it could’ve been ruled as an interception as well. The Patriots were down by three points and had would’ve been positioned to score following the play — if it wasn’t prematurely called dead.

Referee Tony Corrente justified the call and said he was protecting the quarterback by calling the play dead. While watching this video, it seems as if the referees blew the play dead about seven seconds after Mahomes was wrapped up by Winovich.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss examined the play further on Monday and had many different takeaways from the play. All of these thoughts backed up the idea that the call was wrong, even though Corrente wouldn’t admit it.

Regardless, the Patriots didn’t do enough to win the game and they’ll have a chance to earn a winning record while playing the Denver Broncos next week.

This Patriots LB absolutely buried Travis Kelce with monster hit

Shilique Calhoun absolutely buried Travis Kelce with a big hit.

As the New England Patriots take on the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s always fun to observe the little matchups and nuances that happen throughout. One of those occurrences came when Shilique Calhoun absolutely leveled Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce.

Calhoun chipped Kelce at the line of scrimmage to stop the tight end’s route before it began. That seemed to be the team’s game plan to stope Kelce — they intended to beat him up at the line of scrimmage.

Kelce was stopped right in his tracks. In a game where every defensive tackle is going to be crucial for New England, this was certainly a big one of in terms of the actual and not allowing the tight end to gain extra yards.

It will be interesting to see is that play this momentum in this game. One thing is for certain, this is sure to be an entertaining Monday night.

Shilique Calhoun was more than just one of Mark Dantonio’s best recruits ever, he was one of the most productive pass rushers to ever play for Michigan State. Because of his incredible ability and accomplishments, Calhoun was named to the Big Ten Network’s All-Decade second team, joining Darqueze Dennard in the All-Decade group.

Calhoun made the All-Big Ten First Team three years straight from 2013-15 and was the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2013. Of course, Calhoun was also a huge part of Michigan State’s two Big Ten championships in 2013 and 2015.

Calhoun ended his career at Michigan State with 27 sacks, 44 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles and 3 touchdowns, which is hilarious for a defensive lineman. The Spartans star was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the Third Round of the 2016 draft and now plays for the New England Patriots.

Patriots re-sign LB Shilique Calhoun

Shilique Calhoun should get a shot to compete for a starting job.

The New England Patriots announced on Wednesday they would be re-signing linebacker Shilique Calhoun.

His signing comes with the addition of former Jets linebacker Brandon Copeland and the departure of outside linebackers Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy. Because of those departures, Calhoun should get a shot to compete for a starting outside linebacker job in 2020.

Calhoun spent 2019 on the Patriots, but he struggled with injuries after a strong training camp. He played in 15 games and got one start in a deep group of linebackers in New England. While playing 26% of defensive snaps and 50% of special teams snaps, Calhoun had nine tackles, three quarterback hits and one forced fumble.

Calhoun played three years in Oakland after entering the NFL as a third-round pick out of Michigan State.
