Commanders make roster moves after players signed from practice squad

The Commanders announce multiple roster moves after two players signed away from practice squad.

When you’re having a good season, others notice. That’s the case for the 3-1 Washington Commanders, who sit alone in first place in the NFC East.

Other teams don’t often sign players away from Washington’s practice squad, but that’s what happened this week. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed guard Max Scharping to their roster from the Commanders’ practice squad. Scharping initially signed with Washington on Aug. 28.

That wasn’t the only player leaving the Commanders’ practice squad. Linebacker Jalen Graham, also signed in August, was signed to the San Francisco 49ers’ 53-man roster. The 49ers released Graham during their final roster cuts, and Washington GM Adam Peters, who was in San Francisco when the 49ers drafted Graham in 2023, quickly added him to the practice squad.

The Commanders announced two new practice squad signings to replace Scharping and Graham: Offensive lineman Marquis Hayes and safety Sheldrick Redwine.

Hayes, 25, played collegiately at Oklahoma and was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2022 when Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury was the head coach.

Redwine has ties to Commanders head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and spent time this summer with Washington before he was released during final cuts.

Cowboys waive former 4th-round defensive back

From @ToddBrock24f7: Sheldrick Redwine had been dealing with a hamstring injury in camp as he tried to separate himself from a group of talented safeties.

The crowded Cowboys defensive secondary has been thinned by one.

The team waived safety Sheldrick Redwine on Tuesday, as first reported by Nicole Hutchison of dallascowboys.com. The Cowboys confirmed the move Tuesday afternoon.

The 27-year-old is a former fourth-round draft pick, taken by Cleveland in 2019 out of Miami. After two seasons with the Browns, Redwine bounced around from the Jets to the Panthers to the Dolphins and finally the Colts before signing with Dallas in January 2023.

In that time, the 6-foot safety saw action in 36 games (playoffs included), recording one interception and 77 tackles. His only appearance for the Cowboys came on Thanksgiving Day last season, during a 45-10 blowout win over Washington.

Per Nick Harris of the team website, Redwine “had been battling a hamstring injury” during this summer’s training camp. He signed a futures contract with the club back in January, but was unable to carve out a role in a position group that includes Malik Hooker, Donovan Wilson, Markquese Bell, Juanyeh Thomas, Israel Mukuamu, Julius Wood, and Emany Johnson.

All clubs must get their 90-man rosters down to 53 by the end of business next Tuesday, Aug. 27. The latest roster projections from Cowboys Wire forecast four safeties making the final team, with one more being signed to the practice squad. Redwine was not on that list.

The Cowboys will return to Frisco this week after a long stay in Oxnard, Calif. and play their final preseason game this Saturday at AT&T Stadium against the visiting Chargers before concluding training camp.

Cowboys open 21-day window for Fehoko, Harper; add CB to practice squad

The WR and LB had been on injured reserve since October and can now practice with the team. Sheldrick Redwine has been signed as a DB. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Even if they keep winning playoff games, the Cowboys are running out of days in what will constitute their 2022 season. But a trio of young players is looking to make the most of the late opportunity, perhaps even getting into some postseason action.

The Cowboys on Thursday opened the 21-day practice windows for wide receiver Simi Fehoko and linebacker Devin Harper, allowing them to return to work with the team and possibly be added to the 53-man roster within the next three weeks.

Fehoko, in his second year out of Stanford, recorded three catches in five game appearances this season before suffering a shoulder injury in practice just before the Week 6 contest at Philadelphia. He’s been on injured reserve since then.

Harper is in his rookie campaign, a sixth-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State. He saw special teams snaps over the Cowboys’ first three games of 2022 as he tried to work his way into the team’s talented linebacker corps. He was placed on IR in late October after dealing with an Achilles issue.

The Cowboys also welcomed a new man to the practice squad, signing defensive back Sheldrick Redwine on Thursday. A fourth-round pick of the Browns in the 2019 draft, the former safety out of the University of Miami then had stints with the Jets, Panthers, Dolphins, and Colts, mostly on those clubs’ practice squads.

He has eight NFL starts over 33 games, with an interception recorded in 2020.

To make room for Redwine, cornerback Mackensie Alexander was moved to the practice squad’s injured list. The veteran had been signed in December and saw just a handful of defensive snaps against the Eagles in Week 16.

Colts promote RB Jake Funk from practice squad

The Colts promoted RB Jake Funk from the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts promoted running back Jake Funk from the practice squad to the active roster and waived running back Jordan Wilkins. They also signed safety Sheldrick Redwine to the practice squad.

Funk was a seventh-round pick with the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 NFL draft. He missed the majority of his rookie season due to a hamstring injury but was activated just before the playoff run that ended in a Super Bowl win.

Funk was waived in October by the Rams and spent roughly a month on the practice squad of the New Orleans Saints. He signed with the Colts’ practice squad in December.

Funk hasn’t taken a carry yet this season and only has two carries for five yards in his career.

Dolphins place two players on injured reserve, waive three

Miami has trimmed down to 80 players.

In an effort to cut down to the NFL’s 80-man roster limit, the Miami Dolphins announced a number of moves on Tuesday morning.

The Dolphins announced that they waived safety Sheldrick Redwine, which was previously reported by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson. They also announced that they’ve waived punter Sterling Hofrichter and linebacker Deandre Johnson.

On top of those moves, the Dolphins also placed cornerback Mackensie Alexander and fullback John Lovett on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

Alexander is the most surprising transaction here, as he was just brought in after the first preseason game to replace Trill Williams, who was also placed on injured reserve. Now, Miami’s looking even thinner at cornerback.

Lovett had been not participating in practice or games during the last two weeks, so this move wasn’t all that shocking, especially considering Alec Ingold had a guaranteed roster spot.

Hofrichter, like Lovett, was in a battle with a veteran that basically won the spot already. He was really just in there to limit Thomas Morstead’s punt attempts while he was dealing with an injury.

Johnson was signed as an undrafted free agent this offseason to compete in a rather deep battle for outside linebacker/defensive end reps. While he flashed at times, he had an outside shot to make it.

Report: Dolphins release S Sheldrick Redwine

The safety joined Miami midway through 2021.

On Tuesday, all 32 NFL teams will be required to get their rosters down to 80 players before the deadline at 4 p.m. ET.

The Miami Dolphins began that process by releasing safety Sheldrick Redwine, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

Redwine originally joined the Dolphins during their 2021 campaign when he was signed off of the Carolina Panthers practice squad in October. He appeared in four games for Miami, recording just two sacks. Miami re-signed Redwine as a restricted free agent this offseason.

This move leaves the Dolphins with Jevon Holland, Brandon Jones, Eric Rowe, Verone McKinley III and Clayton Fejdelem at the safety spot.

2022 Dolphins position preview: Breaking down the safeties heading into camp

The top spots appear to be locked up.

The Miami Dolphins are beginning their first training camp with new head coach Mike McDaniel at the helm, as rookies reported last week and veterans arrive on Tuesday.

Fans will have to wait until Saturday to get their first peek at the team, as that is the first session open to the public.

Until then, it’s a great time to finish assessing the roster after an offseason of moves.

We’ve talked about quarterbacksrunning backswide receiverstight ends, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebackers, cornerbacks and specialists but now it’s time to finish the final position group and discuss the safeties on the roster.

Dolphins RB and S ratings in Madden NFL 23

Two safeties made it into the 80s.

With the end of another NFL offseason insight, football fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the newest installment of the Madden video game series, Madden 23.

After the release of wide receiver/tight end ratings on Monday, and linebacker/defensive end ratings on Tuesday, EA Sports, the publishers of the game, released running back and safety ratings on Wednesday. The Dolphins have some solid players at each position, but no one made it into the elite 90s.

Here’s a look at most of Miami’s running back and safety ratings for launch and how they compare to other players at the same position:

  • Jevon Holland – 83 overall (t-No. 10 FS)
  • Eric Rowe – 80 overall (t-No. 17 SS)
  • Chase Edmonds – 79 overall (t-No. 33 RB)
  • Raheem Mostert – 78 overall (t-No. 37 RB)
  • Sony Michel – 77 overall (t-No. 42 RB)
  • Myles Gaskin – 74 overall (t-No. 59 RB)
  • Brandon Jones 72 overall (t-No. 40 SS)
  • Clayton Fejedelem – 70 overall (t-No. 45 SS)
  • Sheldrick Redwine – 70 overall (t-No. 47 FS)
  • Salvon Ahmed – 69 overall (t-No. 91 RB)
  • Quincy Wilson – 67 overall (t-No. 61 SS)
  • Verone McKinley III – 63 overall (t-No. 79 FS)
  • Gerrid Doaks – 62 overall (t-No. 157 RB)

While Dolphins fans may not be the happiest with these rankings, they can rest on the fact that Mostert was listed as the fastest running back in the league with a 95 speed rating.

Breaking down Dolphins DB Sheldrick Redwine’s new contract

He doesn’t have a ton of guaranteed money.

The Miami Dolphins made so many splash moves this offseason, that some of the smaller moves, like the re-signing of defensive back Sheldrick Redwine, haven’t been discussed as much.

Redwine, 25, joined the Dolphins last October when he was signed off of the Carolina Panthers practice squad, making Miami his fourth team in the last year. The former Hurricane spent the first two seasons with the Cleveland Browns after being a fourth-round pick in 2019.

During his time with the Dolphins, he was actually moved between the practice squad and active roster. He played in four games, recording two total tackles while contributing mostly on special teams.

This offseason Miami re-signed Redwine to a one-year deal worth roughly $1.153 million with $125,000 guaranteed. That guaranteed money comes in the form of a $25,000 signing bonus and $100,000 of his $1 million base salary being guaranteed. He also has a roster bonus of $127,500.

Between his limited role on the bottom of the depth chart and the lack of dead money created if he were to be released ($125,000), it’s evident that Redwine needs to give the Dolphins a reason to keep him around for 2022 in training camp and preseason.

Dolphins are re-signing S Sheldrick Redwine

The Dolphins have yet to lose a player from their defense.

The Miami Dolphins are just hours away from the start of the new league year, and the official start of the NFL’s free agency period.

While they’ve been busy in recent days agreeing to deals during the legal tampering period, they’ve also done a lot of work retaining their own free agents that were set to hit the market.

Now, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, they’ve kept another one, as safety Sheldrick Redwine is re-signing with the Dolphins.
