Browns injury report for Thursday: Near status quo on the player front

The good news is no players who were limited got worse

The injury report from the Cleveland Browns on Thursday in advance of the AFC divisional round matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs looks very similar to the one the team produced on Wednesday.

Three players — RT Jack Conklin, LB B.J. Goodson and TE David Njoku — remained out from Thursday’s session. Coach Kevin Stefanski did not elaborate on the injury front beyond noting the players’ statuses.

The four players who were limited on Wednesday all stayed in that status on Thursday. DE Myles Garrett, DT Sheldon Richardson, OC JC Tretter and RG Wyatt Teller all worked in some capacity but not fully with the team. They were joined by TE Stephen Carlson, who is listed as limited with a groin injury.

Cleveland holds one more practice on Friday, after which the team will release the official game status for the players.

Browns injury update: 3 players out, 4 more starters limited in Wednesday’s practice

The list includes 3 of the starting 5 offensive linemen

The first official Cleveland Browns injury report for the divisional round matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs features a lot of prominent names. Three players sat out Wednesday’s practice session in Berea, including All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin and starting LB B.J. Goodson. Tight end David Njoku also sat out.

Four more starters were limited, most notably All-Pro DE Myles Garrett. Two fellow starters with Conklin on the offensive line, center JC Tretter and right guard Wyatt Teller, were also limited with lingering injuries. Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson rounds out the limited list.

Conklin’s status, missing with a designated knee/hamstring issue, is the most concerning. He left Sunday’s wild-card win over Pittsburgh with the injury and did not return. Kendall Lamm is in line to replace Conklin if he’s not able to play.

Garrett, Teller and Tretter have all played through their respective injuries in recent weeks.

Browns injury update: Wyatt Teller still sits, 9 players limited in practice

Sheldon Richardson and Malcolm Smith returned after being out on Wednesday

Christmas Eve saw the Cleveland Browns practice indoors due to inclement weather in Berea. It also saw several Browns sitting out at least part of the scheduled practice session.

Nine different players were listed as limited by the Browns in the post-practice injury report.

For two of the players, it was an upgrade from Wednesday’s “did not practice status. Both DT Sheldon Richardson (neck) and LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring) were back on the field as limited participants.

The remaining limited players:

  • RT Jack Conklin (knee)
  • RB D’Ernest Johnson (groin)
  • CB Kevin Johnson (knee/groin)
  • WR KhaDarel Hodge (hamstring)
  • C JC Tretter (knee)
  • CB Denzel Ward (calf)
  • LB Sione Takitaki (knee)

The only player sitting out fully was right guard Wyatt Teller with his ankle injury. He is not expected to play in Week 16 or Week 17.

Sheldon Richardson expected to play for Browns vs. Jets

Coach Stefanski indicated he expects the DT to play vs. his old team in New York

Head coach Kevin Stefanski sure seems to believe that defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson will be on the field and ready to roll when the Browns take on the New York Jets on Sunday. Richardson’s status is up in the air at this point after the veteran defensive tackle suffered a neck injury while making a tackle in the Browns win over the Giants on Sunday night.

Stefanski was asked if Richardson was being held out of Wednesday’s practice for simple precautionary reasons and not a serious injury. He acknowledged that was the case.

Richardson is a former Jet who spent the first four years of his career in New York. He was the Jets’ first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Missouri and earned his one career Pro Bowl berth in 2014 with New York.

Coach Stefanski also revealed that safety Andrew Sendejo has been cleared from the concussion protocol and will be a full participant at practice.

Report card: Grading each Browns position group after third quarter of season

Updated report card on where each position group is at through the first 12 games

The Cleveland Browns have a 9-3 record after the first three quarters of the season. Kevin Stefanski has guided his Browns to the top seeding in the AFC Wild Card race and the team is steaming towards its first postseason berth in almost two decades.

Now it’s time to close on the goals. Put up the four fingers and focus on finishing the season strong. But before the Browns finish, here’s an updated report card on where each position group is at through the first 12 games.

Grading the Browns position by position at the bye week

Studs and Duds is all studs in the Browns win over the Titans

Not everyone had great games but the team is 9-3 and sometimes it’s best to just enjoy the happy moments

The Cleveland Browns just finished putting the Tennessee Titans away to an impressive tune of 41-35 and are now 9-3 for the first time since 1994. Everyone should be stoked and for that reason in this week’s stud and duds, we will only be exploring the studs baby!

Baker Mayfield

It is still shocking that people question Baker Mayfield and his ability, but maybe after orchestrating another phenomenal game against a good opponent the critics will shut up. Mayfield threw four touchdowns, all in the first half, and finished the game with 334 passing yards. Maybe no pass was prettier than the 75-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones.

Myles Garrett

Garrett is a mainstay on this list, except for when he is dealing with COVID. He had another fantastic game with two tackles and a sack that showed just how elite and explosive he is off the edge. Garrett is the first player in franchise history to earn 10 or more sacks in three straight seasons. The only thing that would make his game even better would be the refs calling a hold every once in a while.

Donovan Peoples-Jones

“DPJ” didn’t have the perfect game as illustrated by his atrocious drop, but the late-round rookie did finish as the second leading receiver with two receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown. We spoke of the glory of his 75-yard touchdown in which he worked the defensive back like a rodeo clown and hopefully we can expect more of this moving forward.

Rashard Higgins

Higgins was the actual leading receiver for the Browns with six receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. It almost makes you forget that he was in the coaching doghouse for some unknown reason last season…almost. Benching Higgins may have been the biggest mistake of the John Dorsey tenure.

Sheldon Richardson

Richardson may be the real MVP of the game as he was the focal point of stopping the Derrick Henry rushing attack, which was the main reason Tennessee was favored by a touchdown to begin with. Richardson not only stopped Henry early and often but also forced a fumble on Henry.

Not everyone had great games but the team is 9-3 and sometimes it’s best to just enjoy the happy moments.

Sheldon Richardson misses Browns practice with an Achilles injury

Richardson worked out on the exercise bike instead of practicing

Fear not, it’s not a torn Achilles tendon. Gotta get that out of the way before proceeding…

Browns starting defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson did not practice on Thursday. The team listed him with did not participate status with an Achilles injury.

Richardson was a full go in Wednesday’s practice and the move appears just precautionary. He was filmed riding an exercise bike off to the side of the practice field in Berea and working with trainers. That wouldn’t be happening if Richardson had a torn Achilles.

Linebacker Jacob Phillips (knee) and right tackle Wyatt Teller (calf) were also sidelined from Thursday’s practice. Both missed Wednesday’s session with their injuries as well.

Browns injury update: 8 limited, 2 out at Thursday’s practice

Sheldon Richardson moved up to limited but Karl Joseph joined the list

The injury list from Thursday’s practice session in Berea is a crowded one, as is becoming the norm for the Cleveland Browns in 2020. Eight players, including starting RB Kareem Hunt and WR Odell Beckham Jr., were limited in the practice.

Two other Browns did not participate at all. Starting defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi and reserve LB Tae Davis remained out. Both also missed Wednesday’s practice.

Sheldon Richardson upgraded from not practicing on Wednesday to limited duty on Thursday. He is battling a thigh injury.

The list of limited players:

  • WR Odell Beckham Jr.
  • RB Kareem Hunt
  • DT Sheldon Richardson
  • DE Adrian Clayborn
  • S Karl Joseph
  • OC JC Tretter
  • LB Jacob Phillips
  • CB Greedy Williams

Joseph is a new addition to the list with a hamstring issue.

Browns injury update: 3 defenders out on Wed. but Adrian Clayborn returns

Updating the Browns practice participation from Wed. in advance of Week 5

Wednesday marked the first transition into Week 5 practice preparation for the Cleveland Browns. The team took to the practice field in Berea without its starting defensive tackle tandem, though the Browns did welcome back a key defensive reserve.

Both Sheldon Richardson (thigh) and Larry Ogunjobi (oblique) did not practice on Wednesday. Ogunjobi left Sunday’s win over the Cowboys with the injury and has yet to return to action.

They were joined on the sidelines by reserve LB Tae Davis, who has missed considerable time the last two weeks with an elbow injury.

The Browns did get a return from top reserve DE Adrian Clayborn. The veteran missed Week 4 with a hip injury but was back at full speed on Wednesday in the portion of practice open to the media.

Also of note: Greedy Williams did not appear on any injury updates as still being out. The second-year CB has yet to take the field after suffering a shoulder injury in training camp.

Ex-Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson suspended following DWI arrest in March

The Jets’ former first-round pick won’t play for the first two games of the 2020 season if he signs with a team.

Regardless of if former Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson lands on an NFL team in 2020, he won’t play at the start of the season.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the NFL suspended Wilkerson for the first two games of the season after he was charged and arrested in March for DWI, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia by New Jersey State Police. It was his second drunk driving arrest in 12 months.

Wilkerson hasn’t played since 2018 as a member of the Green Bay Packers after he spent the previous seven seasons with the Jets. While he only played in three games with the Packers and tallied five total tackles, he initially flourished with the Jets after being drafted 30th overall in 2011. He combined for 44.5 sacks, 410 combined tackles, 11 forced fumbles and 103 quarterback hits in New York.

Wilkerson, along with Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams, formed a formidable trio on the Jets defensive line that tallied 20 combined sacks in 2011. That season also featured Wilkerson’s best year as a pro, as he recorded 12.5 sacks, was selected for his first and only Pro Bowl and signed a lucrative five-year, $83 million contract extension with $53 million in guaranteed money the following offseason.

Wilkerson failed to live up to his new contract and tallied just eight sacks and 104 total tackles in the two years after his extension. The Jets cut him after the 2017 season. He signed with the Packers soon after but suffered a serious ankle injury that forced him to miss all but three games of the 2018 season. Wilkerson didn’t sign with any team after the 2018 season.

Wilkerson recently turned 30, but his off-the-field history, coupled with his declining production, doesn’t bode well for a return to the league.
