Giants had ‘exploratory meeting’ with Russell Wilson

The New York Giants hosted an “an exploratory meeting” with veteran quarterback Russell Wilson this week.

The New York Giants are in the market for a quarterback this offseason.

On Friday morning, veteran quarterback Russell Wilson stopped over in East Rutherford for an “exploratory meeting” with the New York Giants before traveling to Pittsburgh to meet with the Steelers.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen is adamant that the team will add a quarterback, citing a lack of depth. Tyrod Taylor is an pending free agent, and Daniel Jones, the presumed starter, is recovering from a neck injury and torn ACL.

Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll say Jones will be the starter. And although there is early optimism that DJ can return in time for training camp, there remains a possibility that he will miss the first few weeks of the regular season.

The 35-year-old Wilson is technically still a member of the Denver Broncos, but the team has announced he will be released in the coming days. He’s been granted permission to meet with other teams.

Wilson has some very limited crossover with Giants passing game coordinator/QB coach Shea Tierney.

In 15 games last season, Wilson completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 341 yards (4.3 ypc) and three touchdowns.

Giants promote Mike Kafka to assistant head coach, announce staff changes

The New York Giants have promoted three assistants, including Mike Kafka to assistant head coach, and announced other staff additions.

The New York Giants have promoted offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to assistant head coach, secondary coach Jerome Henderson to defensive passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney to offensive passing game coordinator.

All three will continue in their previous roles while taking on the additional responsibilities.

In addition, Charlie Bullen was hired as the new outside linebackers coach, and Zak Kuhr was added as a defensive assistant.

The moves should complete the Giants’ coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Earlier this week, the Giants hired Shane Bowen as their new defensive coordinator, replacing Wink Martindale, and Mike Kelly to assume the open tight ends role after Andy Bischoff left to join Joe Harbaugh’s staff with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Both Bowen and Kelly came from Tennessee, where they served under the now-former head coach Mike Vrabel.

Kuhr also comes from Tennessee — first as a quality control coach in 2020 and then worked with the Titans’ defense under Bowen, becoming their inside linebackers assistant in 2021.

Bullen was most recently with the Arizona Cardinals (2020-22) as their outside linebackers coach. Before that he was with the Miami Dolphins from 2012-2018, working with the linebackers and defensive line. He will assume the roles held by Drew Wilkins, who was let go last month.

Giants’ Shea Tierney earns high praise at 2024 Senior Bowl

New York Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney earned high praise from players at this week’s Senior Bowl, where he served as an OC.

The New York Giants appear to have another rising star on their coaching staff.

Shea Tierney, the Giants’ quarterbacks coach, made a big splash as the offensive coordinator of the National team at this week’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

“Honestly, if I didn’t know he wasn’t a coordinator where he was, I would have thought he was,” Penn State tight end Theo Johnson told The Athletic.

Tierney, a former assistant for the Buffalo Bills who worked with Josh Allen, is getting a good look at the offensive talent down in Mobile this week, especially the quarterbacks.

More from Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic:

The 37-year-old Tierney joined Brian Daboll’s Giants staff in 2022 after working with Daboll in Buffalo for four years. He also spent time with Daboll at Alabama. Back in the state this week, he bounced around the field during three practices, running the National offense. Tierney had a front-row seat to the top prospects in this year’s draft class, including the three quarterbacks on the National team: Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Oregon’s Bo Nix and Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman.

Tierney has displayed vast knowledge and experience as well as his ability to relate to players.

“He’s been awesome,” Hartman said. “He’s got a lot of energy, and he’s been really impactful because he makes it stress-free. I think that’s the big thing. This can be a very stressful environment. The entire coaching staff but obviously as him being the OC, he’s able to really dial everything up and then dial it back in a sense where we can go out and just execute and play our game.”

Tierney will use the experience to help him take the next step in his career, which will likely be an offensive coordinator at the NFL level.

“It’s been really fun to get around the other staff members first of all, and the people at the Senior Bowl did a great job of putting it together,” Tierney told The Athletic. “So having a good time with them putting the plan together and just kind of making adjustments has been a really cool deal.”

See it: Giants coaches scouting for the future at Senior Bowl, Shrine Bowl

Some sights and sounds from New York Giants coaches and assistants at both the 2024 Senior Bowl and 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl.

The New York Giants are well-represented at the 2024 Senior Bowl and the 2024 East-West Shrine Game this week — both in terms of coaches and scouts.

At the Senior Bowl, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney is serving as the offensive coordinator of the National Team with assistant special teams coach Mike Adams serving as the special teams coordinator of the American Team.

Meanwhile, at the Shrine Bowl, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is serving as head coach of the West Team. He’s been joined by offensive assistant Angela Baker, who is coaching tight ends.

Newly hired special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial is filling that same role for the East Team.

Here are some quick sights and sounds from the Giants’ side of things at these two games.

Giants’ Shea Tierney, Mike Adams will serve as Senior Bowl coordinators

New York Giants QB coach Shea Tierney and assistant special teams coach Mike Adams have been named coordinators for the 2024 Senior Bowl.

The New York Giants will be well-represented during the college All-Star season.

On Thursday, February 1, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will serve as head coach of the West team during the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl. But he’s not the only one who will be busy that week.

Just a few short days later, on Saturday, February 3, two other members of the Giants will step up to the plate during the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney will serve as offensive coordinator of the National Team.

Tierney has coached quarterbacks for the past two years with New York after four seasons with the Buffalo Bills. During that time, he served as offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach under Brian Daboll, who is currently head coach of the Giants.

In addition to Tierney, Giants assistant special teams coach Mike Adams has been named special teams coordinator of the American Team.

After 16 seasons in the NFL and two Pro Bowl appearances, Adams joined the Chicago Bears as an assistant defensive backs coach in 2021. He sat out the 2022 season before joining Daboll’s Giants staff in July of 2023.

Giants minicamp: Notes, videos and highlights from Day 2

News, notes, highlights and a few videos from Day 2 of the New York Giants’ 2023 mandatory minicamp.

The New York Giants were back on the field for their final practice of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. They will now head into summer break and are not required to return to East Rutherford until the start of training camp in late July.

The day began with offensive assistants meeting with members of the media before head coach Brian Daboll took the podium for a press conference. Then it was off to practice.

Here is some news, notes, highlights and videos from Day 2 of minicamp:

Giants players thrilled to have their coordinators back in 2023

New York Giants players are thrilled to have offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale back in 2023.

Following their unexpected success in 2022, New York Giants coordinators Mike Kafka and Wink Martindale quickly became hot commodities on the head coaching circuit this offseason.

Kafka, who was a first-time offensive coordinator for the Giants last season, was a finalist for the Arizona Cardinals’ job. He also held interviews with the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, and Houston Texans.

Martindale, meanwhile, was a finalist of his own. He very nearly landed the Colts job but had some philosophical differences with owner Jim Irsay.

Ultimately, both Kafka and Martindale returned to the Giants.

That was music to the ears of quarterback Daniel Jones, who was also thrilled to see quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, who interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator job, return.

“I think it’s huge,” Jones said. “It definitely gives us a little bit of a head start.”

Safety Xavier McKinney was equally as “thrilled” to see Martindale back.

“(It’s) great to have him back,” McKinney said. “We can continue to build off what we had last year.”

Both Jones and McKinney understand that NFL business is NFL business. And while they support their coaches and wish the best for them, having them return is a breath of fresh air — especially considering the franchise has been in a constant state of turnover for nearly a decade.

Consistency is essential and the Giants finally have that.

Todd Bowles sees a bright future for Giants’ Shea Tierney

Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles may have passed him over for a job, but he sees a bright future for New York Giants QBs coach Shea Tierney.

The New York Giants have a deep bench when it comes to Brian Daboll’s coaching staff.

This offseason, both of their coordinators, Wink Martindale (defense) and Mike Kafka (offense), were serious head coaching candidates and several others were hired away by other teams.

One assistant that was interviewed but missed out on being hired was quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney. He interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator vacancy which eventually went to Dave Canales.

Tierney impressed Bucs head coach Todd Bowles during the interview.

Tierney runs a high-functioning quarterbacks room that will likely include Daniel Jones again as well as backup Tyrod Taylor. The Giants are likely to add to that room through the draft or free agency this spring.

Should the Giants’ offense continue to make great strides again this year, Kafka will be in the mix on the carousel for another head coaching gig. That will give Tierney either a shot at the Giants’ coordinator job or perhaps another team’s.

Bucs complete OC interview with Giants QB coach Shea Tierney

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have completed yet another interview for their open offensive coordinator position

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have completed yet another interview in their search for a new offensive coordinator.

New York Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney is the latest candidate to interview for the spot vacated by Byron Leftwich, the team announced Tuesday evening.

Tierney’s interview comes just hours after the Bucs also met with Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken about the position, the same one he held in Tampa Bay for three seasons under then-head coach Dirk Koetter.

After interviewing a long list of candidates, don’t be surprised if the Bucs make a decision on this job in the next few days, as they continue the overhaul of their offensive coaching staff under head coach Todd Bowles.

Giants’ Shea Tierney will interview for Buccaneers’ OC job

New York Giants QB coach Shea Tierney will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

New York Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo was the first to report news on the interview.

Tierney has been working under Giants head coach Brian Daboll since 2018 with the Buffalo Bills and was with him at Alabama in 2017. In Buffalo, he worked as the offensive assistant and was later promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach.

With the Crimson Tide, Tierney served as an offensive analyst.

Prior to his time with Alabama, the Giants and the Bills, Tierney served as a graduate assistant at NC State and football analyst and coaching intern with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tierney has widely been credited with helping quarterback Daniel Jones break out in 2022 and would likely be considered an offensive coordinator replacement with the Giants should current OC Mike Kafka take a head coaching position elsewhere.

If Tierney accepts a job elsewhere, the Giants could potentially turn to Davis Webb as the quarterbacks’ coach.
