Seahawks great Shaun Alexander has an idea to get running backs paid

Here’s Alexander on the Jim Rome show offering a solution.

The Seahawks have had some great running backs come through over the years during the Pete Carroll era. However, the team’s only league MVP is still Shaun Alexander, who won the award back in 2005 when running backs still had a chance to win MVP and also get paid.

That last part is an ongoing problem for running backs in the modern game, even the very best of whom are struggling to get fair contracts around the NFL. Here’s Alexander on the Jim Rome show offering a solution.

Happy Birthday to Seahawks all-time leading rusher Shaun Alexander

Even 15 years after his departure, Alexander is still the all-time leading rusher in franchise history..

Today marks the 46th birthday of Seattle Seahawks all-time leading rusher Shaun Alexander. An inductee of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Alexander was drafted out of the University of Alabama by the Seahawks in 2000 and spent eight seasons in Seattle before finishing his NFL career with the Washington Redskins in 2009.

Alexander’s career highlights are plentiful but his 1,880 rushing yard, 27 touchdown, 2005 MVP season was undeniably his best.

According to Alexander’s Twitter account, seeing the return of the classic Seahawks uniforms brings back “great memories.” While usage of the term “great” doesn’t refer to a championship season for Alexander, it does indicate how strong and memorable his experiences were suiting up for the Seahawks. Even 15 years after his departure, Alexander is still the all-time leading rusher in franchise history.

In 2022, Seattle inducted Alexander into the Seahawks Ring of Honor alongside household names like quarterback Matt Hasselback, wide receiver Steve Largent and former head coach Mike Holmgren.

Seahawks Mt. Rushmore: Running backs

Every great Seahawks team has been defined by an elite ground attack

Here at Seahawks Wire, we are continuing our latest on-going summer series: Seahawks Mt. Rushmore, where we will look at the top four players at each major position in franchise history.

Last week we naturally started with quarterbacks. Now, we’re on to what Seattle is arguably best known for when it comes to offense: running backs. Every great Seahawks team has been defined by an elite ground attack, led by some of the best backs to ever play.

Interestingly, while he appeared last week on the quarterbacks list, Russell Wilson is actually No. 5 all time in franchise rushing yards at 4,689.

Seahawks legend Shaun Alexander believes Geno Smith should be Seattle’s QB1 for next 5 years

Seahawks legend, Shaun Alexander, sits down with USA Today Sports to talk about Seahawks’ QB Geno Smith.

Geno Smith is having a moment. Not only is he the front runner for NFL comeback player of the year. He’s now one of the faces of the league in Germany as his Seahawks face Tampa Bay in the first ever regular season game played in that country.

He’s also set to be a free agent this offseason and will likely cash in on his magical season. One Seahawks legend has seen enough to think the team needs to lock him in as QB1 for years to come.

“He will get the contract he so values, so deserves,” said Alexander in an interview on ‘Sports Seriously’ to Mackenzie Salmon. “There’s nothing that he has done that has made us think he’s not our guy for the next five years.”

A ringing endorsement from a man who was just put in Seattle’s ring of honor.

Seahawks legend Shaun Alexander to raise the 12th Man Flag

To this date Shaun Alexander is the only Seahawk to win the MVP, and one of only five Seahawks to even get an MVP vote

Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals is a little extra special for the Seattle Seahawks and the 12th Man. At halftime, the legendary Shaun Alexander will be inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor. Given that Sunday is Shaun’s day, it’s only fitting he will partake in the pregame tradition of raising the 12th Man flag.

Simply put, Shaun Alexander was nothing short of an unstoppable force for the Seattle Seahawks. During his tenure in Seattle, Alexander cruised his way to 100 career touchdowns – tying franchise icon Steve Largent for most in team history.

The crowning achievement of Alexander’s run with the Seahawks was earning league MVP honors in 2005 with a then-record 27 rushing touchdowns. To this date he is the only Seahawk to win the MVP, and one of only five Seahawks to even get an MVP vote. (Bobby Wagner, Steve Largent, Cortez Kennedy and Jim Zorn)

Alexander will join his former quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck, and head coach, Mike Holmgren, in the Ring of Honor. Both Holmgren and Hasselbeck were inducted last October.

Shaun Alexander to be inducted in Seahawks Ring of Honor

Alexander will officially be honored during Seattle’s home game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 16.

The Seattle Seahawks will be taking time to honor another one of their legendary players during the 2022 season. On Thursday it was announced that running back Shaun Alexander would become the newest member inducted to the Seahawks Ring of Honor.

Alexander will officially be honored during Seattle’s home game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 16.

Last season the Seahawks inducted Matt Hasselbeck and Mike Holmgren into the Ring of Honor. It is only fitting for Alexander to join his former quarterback and head coach a year later.

While the Pete Carroll/Legion of Boom era of the Seahawks brought the franchise to the championship mountaintop, it should not be forgotten how formidable the early-2000’s Seahawks were. Behind the legs of Shaun Alexander, the Seahawks won the NFC West four times and made five total trips to the playoffs.

Of course, the crowning achievement during Alexander’s tenure was capturing the League MVP award in 2005 for his sublime season. Alexander rushed for 1,880 yards and set a then-NFL record with 27 rushing touchdowns.

Alexander was only the second running back the Seahawks ever spent a first round draft selection on, and he rewarded the organization handsomely. During his tenure, ranging from 2000-2007, Alexander scored 100 career touchdowns. He joins Steve Largent as the only members of the organization to accomplish such a feat.

Shaun Alexander doesn’t want Seahawks to trade for Baker Mayfield

At least one franchise legend doesn’t like the idea.

If the 2022 NFL season were to start today, the Seahawks would roll into their Monday night matchup with the Broncos having Drew Lock and Geno Smith on the gameday roster at quarterback.

At this late hour, there’s not many other options at the sport’s most important position. There are still two veteran QBs who might get traded before the season begins, though: Jimmy Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield. Both have had great moments during their careers but they’re also among the most inconsistent starters in the league. The 49ers aren’t going to trade Garoppolo to a division rival anyway, which basically makes Mayfield the only game left in town as far as potential QB upgrades go.

At least one franchise legend doesn’t like the idea. Former league MVP and Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander had this to say about Mayfield yesterday on the Zach Gelb Show:

“It’s interesting because I feel like Baker Mayfield might, on paper, look a bit better than Drew or Geno. But, I don’t know if there’s a higher ceiling for any of those three guys… If we make a trade, are we willing to lose something that doesn’t have as high of a ceiling? That’d be foolish… To lose picks or people for something with a ceiling that’s not as high, I don’t think that’s the wisest.”

If the Seahawks knew they’d be getting the 2018 and 2020 version of Mayfield it’d be worth it. However, that’s far from a guarantee and last season while playing hurt Mayfield regressed horribly and may have even been the worst QB1 in the NFL outside of Sam Darnold.

Giving up anything for Mayfield as part of a trade seems like a bad idea, but if he gets released Seattle should definitely try to pick him up.

Seahawks great Cliff Avril shares shoutout for Boye Mafe

Here’s Cliff Avril’s shoutout for the newest member of the defensive line.

Some Seahawks legends have been making themselves available to the team’s draft picks over the last couple days. Seattle’s GOAT left tackle Walter Jones has taken the time to talk with Charles Cross and both Shaun Alexander and Rashaad Penny have welcomed Kenneth Walker III to the squad.

One of the Seahawks’ best pass rushers of all time is welcoming the team’s second-round draft pick, Minnesota EDGE Boye Mafe. Here’s Cliff Avril’s shoutout for the newest member of the defensive line.

The most interesting pro comp we’ve seen for Mafe comes from Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire, who gave him some very-high praise by likening him to Seahawks legend Michael Bennett.
