Lincoln Riley speaks with pride about Baker Mayfield on The Jim Rome Show

Baker Mayfield has won NFL playoff games with two different NFL teams. Not bad. Lincoln Riley is happy for him.

Lincoln Riley was making the rounds on sports talk shows Monday. He appeared on at least three different major shows. One of them was The Jim Rome Show. Riley talked to Rome about a number of topics, one of them being the growth and evolution of Baker Mayfield, one of three quarterbacks coached by Riley who has won the Heisman Trophy.

Mayfield has not become a transcendent NFL star, but he has certainly not been a bust, either. Mayfield has been a productive quarterback for multiple NFL franchises, taking both the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. Mayfield looked very good in the Bucs’ NFC wild card playoff win over the (now-dethroned) NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles one month ago. He has won two NFL playoff games with different franchises. That’s a career achievement most quarterbacks would love to have.

Riley is clearly proud, in his conversation with Jim Rome, about Baker Mayfield’s staying power in the NFL.

Calvin Johnson is ‘extremely happy’ for the Lions and to be around the team

Detroit legend Calvin Johnson is “extremely happy” for the Lions and to be around the team

For many years, Calvin Johnson wanted little to do with the Detroit Lions. Their uneasy split following his unexpected retirement after the 2015 season, and the team’s demand that the Hall of Fame wide receiver pay back some of his bonus money, weighed heavily on the Lions fan base.

The animosity has largely faded in recent times, since owner Sheila Hamp took over and Johnson’s one-time Lions teammate Dan Campbell became the head coach. Johnson has been honored inside Ford Field, and he was prominently on the sidelines for the franchise’s first postseason victory since the 1991 season last Sunday night.

As Johnson told the Jim Rome Show in an interview this week, being part of the Lions success was very important to him.

“It was extremely important,” Johnson responded. “To bring my family back around the organization, to be here in such at time where my brother Dan (Campbell), he’s having success here … it’s important.”

All the negative energy between Johnson and the organization appears gone.

“I’m glad that we’re walking in the right direction,” Johnson added. “And I’m extremely happy for this team right now.”

Ifeatu Melifonwu loves the ‘energy and momentum’ from the Lions fans

Ifeatu Melifonwu loves the “energy and momentum” from the Lions fans in an interview on the Jim Rome Show

Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, like nearly all his Detroit teammates, experienced a playoff victory for the first time in his NFL career on Sunday. The third-year safety was very grateful to the fans in Ford Field for helping make it happen.

Melifonwu praised the Lions fans and the home field advantage they provided in an interview this week on the Jim Rome Show.

“The energy was awesome. You always feed off that. It gives you energy and momentum,” Melifonwu told Rome. “Like on defense, you can’t even hear. You just have to rely on hand signals because you can’t hear each other even if you’re right next to the person. Getting the calls in the huddle, you can barely hear. So it’s definitely — I think we use it to our advantage. It definitely gives us momentum.”

The Jim Rome Show provides the Melifonwu clip here, and the full interview from this week’s appearance can be found here.

Bills’ DaQuan Jones explains poking fun at Next Gen Stats

Guy just wants his due respect:

Bills defensive tackle DaQuan Jones doesn’t get much recognition for the job he does.

Not only is he a defensive tackle, he’s a one-tech spacer eater. Not the flashy type like Aaron Donald or Ed Oliver.

But Jones still just wants a little respect. He even let NFL Next Gen Stats know about it, too.

Following the Bills’ 37-3 win over the Commanders, the analytics outlet posted about how well the defense pressured Commanders quarterback Sam Howell. Not listed? Jones, despite having a total worthy of being up there.

Jones let Next Gen Stats know:

Jones naturally just wants what he feels is his due respect. He elaborated further on it during an appearance on the Jim Rome Show.

“Kind of like I said, story of my career,” Jones said.

Seahawks great Shaun Alexander has an idea to get running backs paid

Here’s Alexander on the Jim Rome show offering a solution.

The Seahawks have had some great running backs come through over the years during the Pete Carroll era. However, the team’s only league MVP is still Shaun Alexander, who won the award back in 2005 when running backs still had a chance to win MVP and also get paid.

That last part is an ongoing problem for running backs in the modern game, even the very best of whom are struggling to get fair contracts around the NFL. Here’s Alexander on the Jim Rome show offering a solution.

Bills’ Brandon Beane: Drafting Dalton Kincaid can help everyone

#Bills’ Brandon Beane: Drafting Dalton Kincaid can help everyone:

In selecting Dalton Kincaid in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, many first thought of how much that pick would mean to Josh Allen.

Of course another weapon helps out your quarterback, but Allen was not the only one on the mind of Brandon Beane when he submitted that pick to the league. The GM explained on “The Jim Rome Show” that Kincaid is going to help out every playmaker on the Bills offense, from receiver Stefon Diggs to fellow tight end Dawson Knox.

For more from Beane, see the attached Rome clip in the video player above.

BIlls’ Brandon Beane welcomes Josh Allen’s willingness to protect self

#BIlls’ Brandon Beane welcomes Josh Allen’s willingness to protect self:

Bills general manager Brandon Beane knows there are still going to be shots taken by his quarterback, Josh Allen.

But earlier this offseason, Allen did admit he has to start taking less of those hits as he gets older. After the QB said that, the GM had recently been asked how excited he was hear that during an appearance on The Jim Rome Show.

See the clip above for Beane’s thoughts on Allen.

Brandon Beane: 2023 is not ‘make-or-break’ for the Bills

Brandon Beane: 2023 is not ‘make-or-break’ for the #Bills:

The 2023 NFL season is a big one for the Buffalo Bills.

But it’s not just about next year.

During an appearance on the “Jim Rome Show,” Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane was asked for his outlook on next year. Sure, Beane admits a Super Bowl push should be on the agenda, but even with the GM’s desires to win a title, he does not want to push all his chips into the middle of the table.

That could work–It did for the Los Angeles Rams. But a short time later, the Rams are rebuilding. Rather than that, Beane wants to maintain excellence.

For Beane’s thoughts, see the attach Rome clip in the player above.

Calvin Johnson ‘excited to be around’ the Lions again, ready to do more with the team

Johnson praised the Lions organization for working with him in an appearance on the Jim Rome Show

The long-running frostiness between Lions legend Calvin Johnson and the team appears to be thawing quickly. In an appearance on the Jim Rome Show this week, Johnson couldn’t help but get excited about the direction of Dan Campbell’s team. “Megatron” also praised the Lions for improving the relationship between the two parties, who have been at odds over bonus monies that Johnson was asked to return following his surprise retirement after the 2015 season.

Rome asked Johnson where things stood between him and the Lions organization.

“I think we’re having some good conversations,” Johnson said. “Mike Disner (Lions COO) over there with the Lions, he’s back in town. I feel like he’s going to put an effort to — bring the two of us together.”

Johnson continued,
“So I’m excited about that. I’m excited about him actually reaching out and putting an effort forward to try and make that happen.”

The Hall of Fame wide receiver noted that he’s got a lot of experience to offer the young team and that, “I’m excited just to be around the team again.”

James Houston explains why getting cut by the Lions was good for him

Detroit rookie phenom James Houston explains why getting cut by the Lions was good for him, what it was like to sack Josh Allen and more with the Jim Rome Show

James Houston has burst onto the NFL, announcing his presence with authority for the Detroit Lions. The sixth-round EDGE from Jackson State seized the lead in sacks by a rookie with his eighth on the season in Detroit’s Week 17 win over Chicago.

Eight sacks in six games is a very impressive feat for Houston. It’s even more astonishing because he was cut after the preseason, unable to make the initial 53-man roster.

Being cut might have been a necessary setback for Houston. He explained why in an appearance on the Jim Rome Show this week.

“When they first cut me, it was like — okay, I’m clearly not there yet,” Houston said. “That was kind of like an ego check for me. It allowed me to humble myself and it allowed me to just put my head down and go to work.”

The hard work led to a spectacular debut. In the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day loss to the Bills, Houston bagged a sack of All-Pro QB Josh Allen on his very first NFL play.  As Houston told Rome, practice makes progress.

“It was almost just like practice,” Houston said. “Everything was so smooth. Everything worked just the way I wanted it to, and it was finishing. You don’t really get a chance to finish as a practice squad player. You don’t get to sack the quarterback or anything like that.”

Houston continued,

“Getting to Josh Allen, I knew that was going to be a task in itself … getting to him I just knew I had to wrap to get him down. Once I got him down I was like ‘man this is the feeling I’ve been waiting for’.”

Houston also shares his thoughts on playing for Dan Campbell and some other fun conversation. The full audio interview is available here courtesy of the Jim Rome Show.
