Breaking down the Saints picks in new 7-round mock draft simulation

We let the Pro Football Network mock draft algorithm write its own 7-round Saints mock draft, which turned into the most unique simulation of draft season:

Enough people have taken a shot at writing mock drafts that, with the 2023 NFL draft just a few weeks out, we decided to let our mechanical overlords have a try. We ran a seven-round simulation with the Pro Football Network mock draft machine making picks for every team, which put together some unique results for the New Orleans Saints. Let’s break it down:

We’re a good bit into free agency now and the New Orleans Saints have made a couple of interesting additions and brought back some key depth players. Now that things have taken shape, we can take another look at a mock draft for the team.

Along the interior of the defensive line, we have seen the additions of Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders. While the team can certainly address the middle of the line in the first round, it just now becomes less of a must. The team can take more of a best player available mixed with what they still need.

The signing of Jamaal Williams also makes the drafting of a running back in the first two days of the draft much less likely, but it probably works out better for a team trying to win now.

Post-combine 7-round mock draft for Packers featuring Aaron Rodgers trade

A seven-round Packers mock draft run through PFF’s simulator and featuring an Aaron Rodgers trade to the Jets. Check it out!

The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine is over and the potential is growing for Aaron Rodgers to be traded to the New York Jets.

Here’s a quick run through the mock draft simulator at Pro Football Focus for the Green Bay Packers, assuming Rodgers is traded to the Jets for the 13th overall pick in the 2023 draft. (Note: It’s certainly possible the compensation in a Rodgers trade will be much more, but the idea here was to keep it as simple as possible. Also, he’s a soon-to-be 40-year-old quarterback who might only play one more season.)

The seven-round results, featuring 12 total picks for the Packers:

Lukas Van Ness gives the Packers a versatile and high-upside rusher who has all the size and athleticism the team covets in defensive front prospects. He could be a disruptive down lineman or stand-up edge rusher based on his development. Imagine the power in a front featuring Van Ness, Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark and Devonte Wyatt.

From there, the Packers went with three-straight pass-catchers, transforming the weapons around Jordan Love, especially at tight end. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a slot dynamo and would team perfectly with Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs to give the Packers three young, dynamic receivers to build around, while Sam LaPorta and Tucker Kraft rehaul the tight end position for 2023 and beyond. This is a terrific tight end class, and the Packers could easily double-dip to rebuild the position. Moro Ojomo helps replace Dean Lowry, speedster Keaton Mitchell provides depth at running back long term, and Earl Bostick Jr. gives the Packers another athletic offensive lineman to develop.

From there, the Packers got four developmental defensive players in the seventh round, including two safeties. The team may prioritize the secondary much earlier in the draft, especially with the question marks at safety, but free agency is another option to build depth here. The draft ends with Clayton Tune, a quarterback the Packers can start developing behind Love.

Final seven-round 2020 mock draft for the Saints, with trades

The New Orleans Saints completed several trades in our final seven-round 2020 mock draft, adding prospects like Tee Higgins and Jalen Hurts.

The 2020 NFL Draft is almost here, and the New Orleans Saints will be on the clock before we know it. So it’s time to run through a final seven-round mock draft, doing our best to navigate the hundreds of selections and make trades when possible to end up with the best set of prospects.

We’ve been publishing a new entry in this series once a week, every week for the last month. You can compare different scenarios to each other in the links we’ve embedded below:

So let’s get to it. Here’s our final stab at seven rounds of Saints picks before the draft kicks off on April 23.

Round 1

There was a surplus of highly-graded options on our board, so we tried to trade down and recoup more picks. We had 10 available prospects graded as potential first-round values at this point, so we attempted to move down 10 spots, from No. 24 to No. 34. The Indianapolis Colts weren’t interested, however, so we ended up settling for a move down to No. 33 (owned by the Cincinnati Bengals). That trade swapped our pick at No. 24 for Nos. 33 and 107 in this year’s draft, and Cincinnati’s third-round pick in 2021.

Saints make a few bold moves in our latest seven-round 2020 mock draft

The New Orleans Saints started our latest seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft by trading up for Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

The New Orleans Saints already have 68 players under contract for the 2020 season, but only 53 of them will be kept around for opening day. Just like we’ve seen in past years, this roster is too deep and talented for every rookie draft pick to stick, so it’s important that the Saints make calculated moves to target players who have a shorter path to contributing than taking scratch-off lottery tickets on a bunch of long shots.

In last week’s seven-round mock draft, we took a more conservative approach and traded back a few times, garnering extra picks to help maneuver the draft board. This time, however, we tried out the mock draft simulator from Pro Football Network, which allows you to trade 2021 draft picks as well as selections in this year’s event.

The Saints are one of the NFL’s most aggressive outfits in the draft, having traded up at some point in each year of Sean Payton’s tenure (except in 2006, during his first days on the job, and in 2012, when he was suspended), and it’s important that we reflect that by having the ability to deal out future picks.

They’re always wheeling and dealing, giving up next year’s draft picks to make immediate upgrades. Fans and analysts may hate the gamble of giving up future assets, but until the NFL draft is abolished altogether or the heat death of the universe (whichever comes first), the Saints won’t have a piper to pay. There will always be future picks to trade.

So with all that said: move on to the next page to find out how we added several impact players in this seven-round mock draft, and which picks are left to work with another day.
