The UFC stays home in Las Vegas this week with a key middleweight matchup atop the card – thought it won’t be at that weight class.

UFC Fight Night 196 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] (17-4-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) in a fight between the most recent two middleweight title challengers. They both lost to champion Israel Adesanya. But this fight won’t be at middleweight thanks to Costa’s failure to make weight. They’ll fight at 205 pounds after Costa came into fight week heavy and intially asked for a catchweight. Vettori is a -185 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Costa is +140. Our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Vettori with a 9-4 picks lead.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Grant Dawson[/autotag] (17-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) is the biggest favorite on the card at -420 in his lightweight fight against [autotag]Ricky Glenn[/autotag] (22-6-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC). He’s a near-unanimous pick from our staff members at 12-1.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Jessica-Rose Clark[/autotag] (10-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Joselyne Edwards[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a women’s bantamweight bout. Clark is a -160 favorite, and she’s got a sizable 9-4 picks lead.

[autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] (18-12 MMA, 13-10 UFC) meets [autotag]Seungwoo Choi[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in a featherweight bout. Choi nearly is a 3-1 favorite, and he’s up big in the picks at 9-4.

It’s a close fight at the betting window between welterweights [autotag]Dwight Grant[/autotag] (11-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and [autotag]Francisco Trinaldo[/autotag] (26-8 MMA, 16-7 UFC). Trinaldo is just a -135 favorite, but he’s got a big 10-3 edge in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Nicolae Negumereanu[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is a -230 favorite at light heavyweight against [autotag]Ike Villanueva[/autotag] (18-12 MMA, 1-3 UFC). He’s a near-unanimous pick at 12-1 from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Costa (57 percent), Dawson (87 percent), Clark (75 percent), Choic (50.1 percent), Trinaldo (63 percent) and Negumereanu (77 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Alex Caceres vs. Seungwoo Choi added to October UFC Fight Night event

Alex Caceres will put his four-fight winning streak up against Seungwoo Choi’s three-fight streak at UFC Fight Night on Oct. 23.

[autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Seungwoo Choi[/autotag] is the latest addition to a UFC Fight Night event in October.

MMA Junkie on Saturday verified with multiple people close to the situation that Caceres (18-12 MMA, 13-10 UFC) and Choi (10-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) have agreed to face off in a featherweight scrap this fall following an initial report from ESPN. The person requested anonymity because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

UFC Fight Night on Oct. 23 does not have an announced location or venue, but is expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Broadcast plans haven’t been revealed.

Caceres, 33, is in the midst of a four-fight unbeaten streak. He’s been shooting for a top-15 opponent at 145 pounds, but “Bruce Leeroy” has always been willing to take on all comers during an octagon tenure which dates back to his March 2011 debut.

He’ll get a tough test in streaking South Korean Choi, who has won his past three UFC fights including a vicious 97-second knockout of Julian Erosa at UFC on ESPN 25 in June.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night lineup on Oct. 23 now includes:

  • Paulo Costa vs. Marvin Vettori
  • Seungwoo Choi vs. Alex Caceres
  • Randa Markos vs. Livinha Souza
  • Daniel Lacerda vs. Jeff Molina
  • Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Joselyne Edwards
  • Jun Yong Park vs. Gregory Rodrigues
  • Mason Jones vs. Alan Patrick
  • Dwight Grant vs. Gabe Green
  • Kris Moutinho vs. Aaron Phillips
  • Nicolae Negumereanu vs. Ike Villanueva

The UFC is back this week with a longtime fan favorite against a rising star at the top of the lineup.

UFC on ESPN 25 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN2 and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, “The Korean Zombie,” [autotag]Chan Sung Jung[/autotag] (16-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC), takes on [autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] (15-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) at featherweight. Ige is a slight -125 betting favorite at BetMGM, and it’s pretty close in the picks from our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, too. They’ve got Ige with an 8-5 advantage.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Aleksei Oleinik[/autotag] (59-15-1 MMA, 8-6 UFC) meets [autotag]Serghei Spivac[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in a heavyweight bout. Spivac is a -225 favorite and has a big 9-4 picks lead.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Davey Grant[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 4-3 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (18-7-1 MMA, 10-6 UFC) in a bantamweight bout. Vera is a 2-1 favorite at the betting window, and he’s a near-unanimous pick from our staff members at 12-1.

[autotag]Julian Erosa[/autotag] (25-8 MMA, 3-4 UFC) is a slight underdog at +125 against [autotag]Seungwoo Choi[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC). Choi, the -150 favorite, has an 8-5 lead in the picks.

[autotag]Bruno Silva[/autotag] (19-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) only is a -120 favorite in his middleweight fight against [autotag]Wellington Turman[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC). Silva is returning for the first time since November 2018. But despite those facts, our staff members have him as the main card’s only unanimous pick.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Matt Brown[/autotag] (22-18 MMA, 15-12 UFC) meets [autotag]Dhiego Lima[/autotag] (15-8 MMA, 4-6 UFC) at welterweight. Lima is a -185 favorite, and he’s got an 8-5 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Jung (62 percent), Oleinik (57 percent), Vera (81 percent), Erosa (53 percent), Silva (65 percent) and Brown (51 percent) are the choices.

With Collin Anglin out, Youssef Zalal steps in to face Seungwoo Choi at UFC Fight Night 184

Seungwoo Choi will get yet another change in opponent on Feb. 6 when he draws Youssef Zalal.

[autotag]Seungwoo Choi[/autotag] will get yet another change in opponent on Feb. 6.

Collin Anglin has been forced out of UFC Fight Night 184, and [autotag]Youssef Zalal[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will step in on short notice to face Choi (8-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC).

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Thursday but asked to remain anonymous, as the promotion has not yet made an official announcement. MMA DNA was first to report the news.

The pair were originally slated to square off at this past October’s UFC Fight Night 179, but Choi was forced to withdraw due to undisclosed reasons. Instead, Zalal faced newcomer Ilia Topuria, who handed him his first promotional loss. Prior to that, the Moroccan featherweight had notched three wins over Austin Lingo, Jordan Griffin and Peter Barrett, becoming the first fighter in 2020 to go 3-0.

After dropping his first two UFC bouts to Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker, Choi notched his first promotional win when he defeated Suman Mokhtarian at UFC Fight Night 165 in December 2019. Prior to his latest booking, Choi had been booked on Feb. 6 against Steven Peterson and then Anglin.

With the change, the UFC Fight Night 184 lineup includes:

  • Alistair Overeem vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Marion Reneau
  • Manel Kape vs. Alexandre Pantoja
  • Beneil Dariush vs. Diego Ferreira
  • Clay Guida vs. Michael Johnson
  • Julio Arce vs. Timur Valiev
  • Alex da Silva vs. Devonte Smith
  • Joselyne Edwards vs. Karol Rosa
  • Molly McCann vs. Lara Procopio
  • Seungwoo Choi vs. Youssef Zalal
  • Aliaskhab Khizriev vs. opponent TBA

With Steven Peterson out, UFC books Collin Anglin to fight Seungwoo Choi on Feb. 6

An injury forces Steven Peterson out but opens the door for Collin Anglin.

[autotag]Collin Anglin[/autotag] has his UFC debut date and opponent set.

Stepping in on short notice for the injured [autotag]Steven Peterson[/autotag], Anglin (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will make his first UFC walk on Feb. 6 against South Korea’s [autotag]Seungwoo Choi[/autotag].

The UFC Fight Night event takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Friday but asked to remain anonymous, as the promotion has not made an official announcement.

BJPenn.com was the first to report Peterson’s withdrawal due to an injury. Korean outlet SpoTV was the first to report Anglin had stepped in.

[lawrence-related id=580095,580352]

Anglin, 27, earned his UFC contract after an impressive performance on Dana White’s Contender Series in September when he defeated Muhammadjon Naimov by unanimous decision. The bout was praised heavily by UFC president Dana White.

Following back-to-back losses to kick off his UFC tenure, Choi (8-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) picked up his first promotional victory in December 2019 against Suman Mokhtarian. Choi was expected to fight Youssef Zalal in October 2020 but withdrew for unknown reasons.

With the change, the UFC Fight Night lineup for Feb. 6 now includes:

  • Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen
  • Alistair Overeem vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Marion Reneau
  • Molly McCann vs. Lara Procopio
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Marion Reneau
  • Aliaskhab Khizriev vs. TBA
  • Julio Arce vs. Timur Valiev
  • Collin Anglin vs. Seungwoo Choi
  • Clay Guida vs. Michael Johnson
  • Beneil Dariush vs. Diego Ferreira
  • Alex da Silva vs. Devonte Smith
  • Danilo Marques vs. Mike Rodriguez
  • Nicco Montano vs. Karol Rosa
  • Manel Kape vs. Alexandre Pantoja

Youssef Zalal vs. Seungwoo Choi targeted for UFC event on Oct. 10

Already 3-0 in 2020, Youssef Zalal will look to continue his success against Seungwoo Choi.

[autotag]Youssef Zalal[/autotag] has been one of the UFC’s most active fighters in 2020 – and he’s been booked yet again.

On Oct. 17, Zalal (10-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will square off with [autotag]Seungwoo Choi[/autotag] – pending bout finalization. The event does not have an official venue or location at this time.

Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the targeted booking Monday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Zalal, 23, is 3-0 in the UFC in 2020. After defeating Austin Lingo in his promotional debut at UFC 247 in February, Zalal defeated Jordan Griffin in June by unanimous decision. On Aug. 8, Zalal defeated Peter Barrett by unanimous decision – the third fight in as many appearances he took on short notice. With the win, Zalal became the first UFC fighter in 2020 to go 3-0.

In December, Choi (8-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) rebounded from an 0-2 start to his UFC tenure. After losses to Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker, Choi defeated Suman Mokhtarian at UFC on ESPN+ 23. In eight pro victories, Choi has five finishes.

With the addition, the current Oct. 17 lineup includes:

  • Poliana Botelho vs. Gillian Robertson
  • Krzysztof Jotko vs. Makhmud Muradov
  • Modestas Bukauskas vs. Jimmy Crute
  • Seungwoo Choi vs. Youssef Zalal

Six fighters are looking at potential six-month medical suspensions after UFC on ESPN+ 23, including former champion [autotag]Frankie Edgar[/autotag], who lost in the main event.

Edgar’s (23-8-1 MMA, 17-8-1 UFC) first-round TKO defeat to [autotag]Chan Sung Jung[/autotag] (16-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) in this past weekend’s featherweight headliner led to an orbital injury that resulted in a 180-day suspension for “The Answer,” unless he receives clearance from a specialist beforehand.

MMA Junkie today obtained the full medical suspension report from UFC on ESPN+ 23, which went down at Sajik Arena in Busan, South Korea.
