DePaul upset Seton Hall on a stunning buzzer-beating block in Big East tournament

Seton Hall is going home and the refs got the call right

It’s hard to know which is the bigger upset in the men’s Big East tournament on Wednesday night.

No. 10 seed DePaul shocking No. 7 Seton Hall (-5.5) or a referee crew making the correct, game-deciding call as time expired in Madison Square Garden.

The Blue Demons (3-17 in the Big East this year) picked up their fifth ever victory in the conference tournament with a 66-65 win that ended with DePaul’s Nick Ongenda sprinting to the hoop from halfcourt to make a game-winning block on Femi Odukale.

Officials initially signaled for goaltending on the play —a wild moment in itself — but the refs reversed the call following very quick review. And it was absolutely the right move since the ball was still on its way up and not over the cylinder.

But how the game got to this point is just as dramatic.

DePaul had numerous chances to tie or take the lead with less than a minute remaining and couldn’t capitalize on any of them.

The very next play after the jump ball:

Seton Hall would hit two free throws after the foul to extend the lead to four only for DePaul to hit a layup with six seconds remaining right after.

That’s when it all fell apart for the Pirates.

Jalen Terry stole the ball from Odukale and was fouled shooting a three-pointer with four seconds left. He hit all three shots from the foul line to set up Ongenda’s block.

“I knew it was a block,” Ongenda told the FS1 broadcast. “I knew it. That’s what I do. I block everything.”

He’s not joking. The senior finished with four rejections on the night. None bigger than the play he made as time expired. Legendary broadcaster Bill Raftery was on the call and said he’d never seen a game end like this one.

Only in March.

Notre Dame’s Olivia Miles is finalist for Lieberman Award

Just another honor for the Irish point guard.

Here’s hoping the knee injury Olivia Miles suffered in Notre Dame’s regular-season finale against Louisville isn’t serious. In the meantime, Irish fans can be happy that she has another honor to her name. For the second straight season, Miles has been named one of five finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is given to the country’s top point guard. A Miles win would put her in company with [autotag]Skylar Diggins[/autotag], who won the award in 2012 and 2013.

Miles is pacing the Irish in rebounds (7.2), assists (6.9) and steals (2.1). She is the only player in the country to average at least 14 points, seven points, six assists and two steals. She also ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in points, rebounds and assists, leading the last of those categories.

Also up for the award are 2022 winner Caitlin Clark of Iowa, Nika Muhl of UConn, Lauren Park-Lane of Seton Hall and McKenna Hofschild of Colorado State.

Iowa Hawkeyes ranked No. 21 in 247Sports’ preseason college basketball rankings

It’s almost time to tip off the 2022-23 men’s college basketball season. According to 247Sports, Iowa starts as the nation’s No. 21 team.

You can tell a season is right around the corner when the market becomes flooded with preseason rankings. Everyone loves a good set of rankings, especially as they try to get a gauge on teams before they step on the court. Nothing boosts your self worth quite like correctly predicting who the top teams will be in advance!

247Sports’ Kevin Flaherty and Isaac Trotter recently took their hand at predicting the field, releasing their college basketball preseason rankings. Coming in as the 21st ranked team in the country is the reigning Big Ten Tournament champion in Iowa.

This could be one of Fran McCaffery’s better defensive teams, and if Kris Murray makes the expected leap to All-Big Ten caliber player, the scoring will be there as well. Patrick McCaffery, Tony Perkins and Payton Sandfort can all put the ball in the basket. – 247Sports.

Iowa is one of only three Big Ten schools featured on the list, Illinois ranked 15th with Indiana a place behind.

The Associated Press also only ranked three Big Ten teams in their initial top 25, notably leaving Iowa on the outside looking in. According to the AP voters, Indiana is the highest-ranked Big Ten team at No. 13, followed by No. 22 Michigan and No. 23 Illinois.

It will once again be a tough competition for the conference crown, but it seems the national media is not expecting a national champion to come from the Big Ten this season.

There is a lot of projection in regards to Iowa this upcoming season, making it understandable why they are a bubble top-25 team heading into the season. Of course, the notable departure is All-American forward Keegan Murray. The fourth overall pick by the Sacramento Kings, Murray would’ve been a National Player of the Year most other seasons.

A lot of pundits are projecting twin brother Kris Murray to fill his brother’s shoes as the star of the team, but, of course, that is still just a projection for now. Murray is following a similar career arc to his brother Keegan, performing really well when given a chance at extended playing time last season. We will have to see if he can handle the limelight as the true No. 1 option for Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery.

The other biggest projection, as Kevin Flaherty breaks down for Hawkeye Insider and 247Sports, is the team’s defense.

Fran McCaffery’s bunch lost All-American Keegan Murray, who likely would have been National Player of the Year in a number of other seasons. But he brings back an experienced roster from a team that appeared to figure things out defensively as the season went on, something that could make this 2022-23 bunch better than its predecessors.

Iowa has not had a top 70 defense in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency since the 2015-16 season, and if the Hawkeyes can find a way to keep the offensive train rolling while buffing up on the defensive end, Iowa could compete for a Big Ten title. Iowa certainly appears to boast plenty of firepower. – Flaherty, 247Sports.

That progression on the defensive side of the court is probably the biggest key for Iowa in 2022. While the team loses Keegan Murray, they still return a lot of experienced players who can put the ball in the hoop. Fourth-year forward Patrick McCaffery averaged a hair over 10 points per game last year, and is getting some breakout buzz in his own right ahead of the season.

Payton Sandfort showed a lot of scoring potential off the bench last year, especially as a shooter hitting 36% of his 3-point attempts. You can go down the roster list and find potential breakout candidates: Kris Murray, Patrick McCaffery, Dasonte Bowen, etcetera.

There are a lot of things to be excited about with this team, but a ton to prove as well. They’ll have plenty of opportunities to show why they’re a top team right away, with Seton Hall, Clemson, and Duke scheduled early in the season.

A Clemson guard who recently entered the transfer portal has revealed where he will finish his collegiate career.

Al-Amir Dawes is headed to Seton Hall.

The Newark (N.J.) native is returning home. Dawes, who started 25 of the 33 games he played this past season as a junior, announced his decision to transfer to the Big East program Wednesday via social media.

The 6-foot-2, 182-pound guard finished last season as the Tigers’ second-leading scorer (11.3 points per game). His 39.8% clip from 3-point range was also tops on the team.

Dawes started 66 games over the last three seasons, averaging 9.9 points and 2.2 assists during his Clemson career. He shot 40.1% from the field and 37.2% from beyond the arc.

Clemson has found at least one replacement in the portal so far in former College of Charleston and Boston College guard Brevin Galloway. The Tigers have one scholarship remaining for next season after recently getting a commitment from Galloway.

Saint Peter’s coach Shaheen Holloway familiar with big upsets in March

Saint Peter’s coach Shaheen Holloway took down Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament, but 22 years ago the Oregon Ducks were his first victim.

On Thursday evening, the first full day of March Madness, the Kentucky Wildcats and coach John Calipari were upset in stunning fashion by the Peacocks of Saint Peter’s, a No. 15 seed out of the MAAC.

It was an upset for the ages, perhaps the greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history, but for Peacocks head coach Shaheen Holloway it was a somewhat familiar scene.

Holloway has been a part of college basketball for the better part of the last 25 years, playing ball at Seton Hall from 1996-2000 before embarking on a seven-year professional playing career. He returned to coach at Iona as an assistant from 2007-2010, and then went back to Seton Hall for eight years before taking over as the head coach at Saint Peter’s in 2018.

While Thursday’s upset may not ever be topped, Holloway was a part of another remarkable tournament run back in 2000 – and Ernie Kent’s Oregon Ducks were one of his victims.

Holloway averaged 13.2 points, 5.6 assists, and 5.1 rebounds for the Pirates during the 1999-2000 season, a year where they went 22-10 and earned a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

They faced off in the first round against No. 7 seed Oregon, a team that went 22-8 under coach Kent behind stellar play from senior guard Alex Scales and sophomore and future NBA Dunk champion Fred Jones.

Holloway was a monster in this game, dropping 27 points on 11-17 shooting as the Pirates managed to prevail in overtime, 72-71 to advance to the Round of 32 and end Oregon’s promising season far too early.

While a No. 10 upsetting a No. 7 is hardly on the same level as a No. 15 seed over a No. 2 seed, the Pirates did follow that up with a win over No. 2 seed Temple in overtime, 67-65, to advance to the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in school history – and to date the last time they have done so.

Oregon missed the tournament the following year before the remarkable 2001-2002 season, where they earned a two seed and advanced to the Elite 8 before falling to Kansas by a score of 104-86.

Oregon certainly hopes never to feel the pain of a first round surprise exit ever again, but the goal for Dana Altman and company at this point is just to get back to the big dance after a late season collapse cost them a spot in the madness this year.

Saint Peter’s Shaheen Holloway is deservedly the hottest coaching name in college hoops after beating Kentucky

Shaheen Holloway was an excellent college basketball player at Seton Hall.

The biggest star of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament thus far is the Saint Peter’s coach who defeated Kentucky. His name is Shaheen Holloway.

Before the game, even many college basketball fans would not be able to tell you where Saint Peter’s is located. It was a shocking win for the program and one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

The win put the program on the map and gave Saint Peter’s fans a ton to cheer about in the process. Although the bracket-busting performance had excellent contributions (especially from Daryl Banks and Doug Edert on the offensive side and KC Ndefo on defense), it was the team’s coach who stole the show.

Although he was matched up against a legend in John Calipari, Holloway (who was an excellent college basketball player at Seton Hall) never backed down and continued to fight until the final seconds of the game.

Holloway also showed extreme confidence during walk-off interviews, too. When asked if he was nervous during the game, he slyly answered that he did not — it’s just basketball.

That mentality is exactly what brought Holloway’s team into this big moment despite the fact that the resources Saint Peter’s has at its disposal are nowhere near what a program like Kentucky offers.

Public records indicate Kentucky spends more than ten times as much as Saint Peter’s does on their respective basketball teams. In fact, Kentucky reportedly has four assistant coaches who make more money on their salaries than Holloway does as head coach.

But that didn’t matter when the two teams actually matched up on the floor.

Despite the lack of resources, Saint Peter’s only even made it into March Madness by winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) conference. Then, with a win over Kentucky, his legend only continued to grow.

In the process, Holloway made a lot of new fans around the nation. Now, especially after the massive win over Kentucky, many believe that his recent successes are only just the beginning for Holloway.

One of those individuals is former Kentucky head coach Rick Pitino, a two-time NCAA tournament champion. Pitino, who currently coaches at Iona in New York, was named MAAC Coach of the Year over Holloway.

Pitino, who played college basketball at the University of Massachusets in the early 1970s, said he believes Holloway could be an excellent candidate to replace Matt McCall at UMass (via NJ.com):

“I think Shaheen is one of the young superstars in coaching. He has the total package that fits UMass … He’s a terrific recruiter. He knows how to recruit inner-city kids, which UMass needs. He plays a tough style of play to go against. He was a great player himself from an area that he would have to recruit the University of Massachusetts, so I think he checks all of the boxes. He’s a wonderful guy.”

However, it is not just Pitino who walked away impressed by Holloway. Former NBA players including Magic Johnson and JJ Redick shared their thoughts, and so did many fans around the world.

Georgetown vs Seton Hall Game Preview, Big East Tournament

Why Georgetown Will Win

The Hoyas get to turn it loose with nothing to lose.

It’s a lost season with a brutal 20-game losing streak since mid-December, but everything starts now. The season can be made by screwing up Seton Hall, and it almost did that a few days ago.

The Pirates won the last meeting 73-68, but the Georgetown defense allowed just 4-of-20 from three and the offense was decent at getting to the line – that’s what it does.

It would be nice if the Hoyas were better from three and could come up with more defensive stops in meaningful moments, but they make free throws. They’ve taken 94 over the last four games, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Georgetown can’t stop anyone from the field.

Seton Hall didn’t shoot well in either game against the Hoyas and still managed to win both of them.

The D allows 78 points per game with everyone able to get easy shots – the Hoyas get hit for 46% from the field.

No, Seton Hall hasn’t been great in the two games, but it’s on a five-game winning streak, it’s learned to push through in close games, and it’s able to overcome its problems with lots of rebounds and plenty of big defensive stops and takeaways.

In this, it’ll be about …

The rebounds.

Seton Hall is +22 in rebounding margin in the two games against the Hoyas, and that’s not about to stop.

Georgetown will come out hot and get everyone all excited, and then Seton Hall will wake up and start hitting its shots. One big run in the second half will put the game away, helped by a whole lot of offensive rebounds.

Shelby Lowe throws no-hitter, Tigers have impressive start to season

Auburn softball off to a roaring start, Shelby Lowe close to perfect in game 2

Auburn softball had a nearly perfect first day of the season.

Sophomore Shelby Lowe (1-0) threw a no-hitter against St. John’s in the Tigers’ second game of the season. The left-hander struck out 11 batters and hit one batter in the five innings she pitched, as Auburn cruised to a 14-0 win.

Auburn’s bats started the game hot and never cooled off, the Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and scored at least two runs in every inning.

Makayla Packer started the game off with a walk and promptly showcased her speed. She stole second and third before scoring on an error. Sydney Cox hit a home run just a few pitches later to give Auburn a 2-0 lead and open the floodgates.

Aspyn Godwin hit a two-run home run to stretch Auburn’s lead to 4-0 before the Tigers recorded an out.

While 10 different batters got hits for Auburn, it was Cox who stole the show offensively.

Cox, who started at third base, went 4-for-4 with a home run, three doubles, four RBI, and three runs scored and was named the Offensive Player of the Game.

Packer also had a strong performance offensively. Auburn’s centerfielder went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, two runs scored, and stole two bases.

The win was Auburn’s second of the season after they beat Seton Hall 10-3 earlier in the day to open the season.

Auburn jumped out to an immediate 1-0 lead when leadoff batter Parker sent the second pitch she saw over the fence.

The Tigers wasted no time adding on either, adding two more runs in the first inning and three more in the second inning to jump out to a commanding 6-0 lead. That was plenty of room for sophomore pitcher Maddie Penta.

She may have not thrown a no-hitter, but Penta (1-0) was also dominant in the circle for Auburn. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs and four hits in seven innings of work while striking out 16 batters.

Auburn will return to Jane B. Moore Field Saturday for rematches with both Seton Hall and St. John’s. They will face Seton Hall at 2:30 p.m. CT and St. John’s at 5 p.m. CT. Auburn will close play their final game of the Tiger Invitational Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT against UMass Lowell.
