Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway selected by San Francisco Giants in 2021 MLB draft

Congrats to Seth!

We’ve got our first Ohio State baseball player off the board in the 2021 MLB draft. Starting pitcher Seth Lonsway was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round as the No. 176 pick overall.

Though Lonsway had an inconsistent 2021 campaign, he has a reputation for being able to miss bats, a trait that many teams look for despite an up and down performance. In 2020, he led all NCAA Division I baseball in strikeouts per nine innings (21.0), but was not selected by a team in last year’s draft COVID-19 shortened, five-round draft. He followed that up by leading Ohio State with 98 strikeouts this past season.

“Seth Lonsway has an elite curveball, one of the better breaking balls in the draft,” OSU coach Greg Beals said in a statement. “Scouts are aware of Seth’s ability with that breaking ball which should allow him to pitch in the big leagues. He has major league stuff.  He works tirelessly on his craft and the quicker his fastball evolves and he commands his fastball, you’ll see Seth Lonsway in the big leagues. I have no doubt about that.”

For his career at OSU, Lonsway posted a 12-11 record and sported a 3.89 ERA. He’ll now get to live out his dream of making it to the next level and we say congrats.

MLB.com says Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway has best curveball of top prospects

Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway was ranked with having the best curveball of all top prospects heading into the MLB draft.

The College World Series is in full swing and the MLB draft is less than a month away. Many collegiate and high school players hope to hear their name called seeking to take another step in fulfilling dreams of making it to the big leagues.

One of those players is Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway. His numbers don’t look great on the surface, posting a 3-5 record with a 4.37 ERA. However, the southpaw hurler would strike out 98 batters in only 68 innings of work in 2021. And that is what is catching the attention of scouts.

MLB.com recently listed some of the best prospects heading into the draft, high school superlative style. Lonsway made the list with the honor of “best curveball”.

Jim Callis of MLB.com had some glowing remarks about the lefty and compared him to a former Major League All-Star with a killer curve.

“Lonsway rode his curveball to 98 strikeouts in 68 innings this spring, generating an impressive 52 percent swing-and-miss rate. He uses a high arm slot to stay on top of his bender, which combines low-80s power and depth, reminding some scouts of Barry Zito’s trademark curve.” Callis said

Lonsway is currently ranked as the 150th best prospect in the 2021 draft. However, with a dominant breaking ball and a heater that touches the mid-90’s, the Buckeye pitcher could end up being a steal for a team looking to add an arm to its pitching prospects.

Pitcher Seth Lonsway dominates during win over Penn State Saturday

Ohio State used dominating pitching from Seth Lonsway to take care of Penn State 7-0 on Saturday. The win clinched the weekend series.

The Ohio State baseball beat Penn State on Saturday by the score of 7-0 to clinch the weekend series. The Buckeyes took care of business on Friday night with a lot of offense en route to an 11-6 victory, and used a whole lot of pitching from Seth Lonsway to win Saturday.

The OSU ace went seven innings, giving up just three hits and two walks while striking out six. He slung a cool, even 100 pitches on the day to notch his second win of the year.

On offense, the Buckeyes broke out the bats for the second-straight time. They jumped on Penn State starter Conor Larkin for three runs in the first inning. Mitchell Okuley walked, advanced to third on a single by Zach Dezenzo, and later scored on Kade Kern’s single to center. Then with one out, Brent Todys lofted a sacrifice fly to score Dezenzo, and Kern later scored on a wild pitch.

The score stayed that way until the fifth inning when Nick Erwin tripled, then scored on a sac fly by Okuley to extend the lead to 4-0 for OSU. The Buckeyes got two more the next inning on two doubles, one by Todys, and another by Marcus Ernst, and Ohio State was up by a commanding 6-0 lead after six innings of play.

OSU would add one more run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning for the final tally of 7-0.

With the win, the Buckeyes run their record to 15-12 on the season and remain in fifth place in the league, just one game behind the Iowa Hawkeyes for fourth. Ohio State and Penn State will do battle for the last game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium.

Time to break out the brooms.

Ohio State baseball’s Seth Lonsway named National Pitcher of the Week

Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway was named by many national media outlets to a slew of player of the week honors.

The Ohio State baseball team is making moves, winning four in a row to sweep the Indiana Hoosiers last weekend. It quickly vaulted the Buckeyes from the middle of the pack into third place, just one and a half games behind leader Nebraska, and just one back of rival Michigan.

It was a team effort over the weekend, but one of those games was a total, dominant effort by left-handed starter Seth Lonsway. Against the Hoosiers last Saturday, the junior struck out a ridiculous 17 hitters in a complete game, seven-inning, two-hit, shoutout performance. Amazingly, only four of the game’s outs did not come by strikeout.

With that performance, Lonsway was recognized by several national media outlets as either the National Pitcher of the Week, or the National Player of the Week. Those sites were Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of The Week, D1Baseball National Player of the Week, NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week and Perfect Game/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week.

Have a game Seth. Ohio State has a big, big three-game series this weekend against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Let’s hope the Bucks can keep rollin’.

Ohio State pitcher named to preseason watch list for Golden Spikes Award

Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway is one of 55 players to be named to the Golden Spikes preseason watch list. Baseball is around the corner.

Spring is in the air… unless you live in the midwest and are buried under a foot of snow. Come to think of it, a lot of the country is feeling that right now. Nonetheless, the unofficial start of spring happened yesterday when pitchers and catchers reported to warmer climates in Arizona and Florida.

It won’t be long before the sound of aluminum bats are filling the air on the campus of The Ohio State University in Bill Davis Stadium. As the season gets ready to get underway, one Buckeye pitcher is making a name for himself.

Seth Lonsway, a pitcher for the OSU baseball team has been named to the preseason USA Golden Spikes Award watch list. Lonsway is one of 55 players to be nominated. The Golden Spikes Award is given out annually to the nation’s best amateur baseball player.

Fans will even be able to vote for their favorite player starting on June 8.

Past winners include Andrew Benintendi, Chris Bryant, Trevor Bauer, Bryce Harper, Steven Strasburg, and David Price, among others.

After going undrafted in the 2020 MLB draft, Lonsway decided to come back to Ohio State for another year to hone his craft. The Buckeyes will be glad to have the left-hander back who has gone 9-6 over the course of two years with a 3.59 era and 168 strikeouts.

Dillon Dingler joins exclusive list of high Buckeye baseball draft picks

With the 38th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Detroit Tigers took Ohio State Buckeye catcher Dillon Dingler.

Coming in to 2020, 11 former Ohio State baseball players had been taken in the first two rounds of the MLB Draft. Six Buckeyes had been taken in the first round, and five in the second. None had gone that high since 2010, when Alex Wimmers was taken by the Minnesota Twins in 2010. Of course, the most high-profile Buckeye taken in the draft is almost certainly Nick Swisher, who went No. 16 overall to the Oakland Athletics in 2002. Swisher was already the most high-profile Buckeye in recent decades, and his focus in discussions of Moneyball-style baseball theory has kept him prominent well past his playing career.

Well, on Thursday evening the Buckeyes added a 12th top draft pick to the list, and one who will hope to supplant Swisher as the highest-profile baseball Buckeye. Catcher Dillon Dingler was taken by the Detroit Tigers with the first pick of the second round, 38th overall. (The reason the first pick of the second round was 38th is because the MLB has eight “competitive balance round” picks after the first round. There were only 29 first-round picks due to the penalties received by the Houston Astros for the sign-sealing scandal.)

Dingler hit .276 in his three years at Ohio State, but he was clearly vastly improved as his career went on. In his final COVID-shortened season, Dingler was batting .340 and had ten extra-base hits in his 50 at-bats in 2020. He was listed as the No. 24 prospect according to mlb.com, but fell to No. 38 in the actual draft.

Dingler certainly has high expectations heading into his professional career, but if his Ohio State career is any indication, he definitely has a good chance to live up to them. Not only is it great for him personally, but professional success is great for the program in general. The Buckeyes were well-improved in recent years, but professional success from alumni is key to recruiting better players in the future and generating fan interest.

Pitcher Seth Lonsway was also expected to be a high draft pick, though he had not yet been taken as of the time of this writing (midway through the fifth round). Additionally, high school senior Mac Wainwright (from Lakewood, OH) was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round. Wainwright is an Ohio State signee, and he will need to decide if he goes straight to the pros or if he starts his career as a Buckeye for at least one year.

Ohio State baseball loses to Stetson 9-1

The Ohio State baseball team couldn’t hang with Stetson Friday night, losing 9-1 in DeLand, Florida.

The Ohio State baseball team took it on the chin Friday night, dropping the first game of the weekend series 9-1 to Stetson in DeLand, Florida.

The Buckeyes got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and seemed to have dodged a bullet with ace Seth Lonsway on the mound. In reality, it was just the beginning of more offensive opportunities for the Hatters.

Stetson struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, plating two runs on two walks, a single, and a wild pitch. It got two more in the 3rd inning with Lonsway continuing to struggle with his command. He was lifted in the inning after giving up another single and a walk, but the damage was done with OSU down 4-0.

Ohio State’s only run came in the top of the 5th inning on a two-out rally. Matt Carpenter walked, then Mitchell Okuley lined one off the wall for an RBI triple to make the score 5-1. Unfortunately, that’s as close as the scarlet and gray would get, ultimately surrendering four more runs.

It has been a very disappointing start to the season to say the least for the Buckeyes. The loss drops Ohio State’s overall record to 3-7. It’ll try to get some momentum going on the season when it goes at it again tomorrow at Noon against Harvard.

The Ohio State baseball team gets its first win of the season over Pittsburgh

The Ohio State baseball team used dominating pitching to pick up its first win of the season 4-1 over Pittsburgh.

After dropping its season opener, the Ohio State baseball team rebounded for its first victory of the year, 4-1 over Pittsburgh thanks to a dominating performance from starting pitcher Seth Lonsway.

The right-hander made it difficult for the Panthers’ bats to get any kind of offense going. He had a shaky first inning — giving up one run — but he settled down from there. All told, he threw six innings of one-hit ball — striking out twelve hitters along the way to earn the win. Bayden Root came on in relief and pitched another strong three innings. He struck out six and allowed just one hit to nail things down.

There wasn’t a ton of offense for the Buckeyes, but enough to get the job done. After Pittsburgh plated a run on a couple of walks and a two-out RBI single in the top of the first, Ohio State answered. It got a big ground out RBI from Brent Todys after Nate Karaffa and Dillon Dingler both had hits.

The Buckeyes then took the lead for good in the 4th on back-to-back doubles by Connor Pohl and Zach Dezenzo to make it 2-1. Ohio State loaded the bases then but couldn’t plate any more runs in the inning.

It did get two insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning though and that would be more than enough.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 1-1 on the young season and will take on Indiana State at 11:30 AM Sunday.

Ohio State baseball pitcher Seth Lonsway named second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball

Ohio State pitcher Seth Lonsway had been named a preseason Second-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

We’re just a few weeks away from the start of college baseball season, and Ohio State is expected to field a very competitive team in 2020. It’s already been ranked No. 24 in the preseason by Baseball America, and is expected to contend for a Big Ten Championship.

Part of the reason why the expectations are high is because of starting pitcher Seth Lonsway. The redshirt sophomore left-hander had a fantastic year in 2019. He was named a First Team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings, and Second Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and the NCBWA.

Lonsway was also a Third Team All-Big Ten selection and a member of the Big Ten All-Freshman and All-Tournament Team. He led the Buckeyes with eight wins in 2019, going 8-4 with a 3.70 ERA.

He led all Division I freshman with 126 strikeouts, and led all Big-Ten pitchers by striking out 71 batters in conference play.

Now, he’ll be leaned on as the ace of an Ohio State pitching staff that hopes to lead its team to a Big Ten title and another appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State opens its season on February 14 in Port Charlotte, Florida against St. Joseph’s.
