Sixers sign then waive Sekou Doumbouya, Aminu Mohammed for Blue Coats

The Philadelphia 76ers will sign and then waive Sekou Doumbouya and Aminu Mohammed for them to join the Delaware Blue Coats.

The Philadelphia 76ers are planning to contend for a title in the present, but they also have to be sure they are stockpiled with young players for the future.

The Sixers have been signing and waiving a series of players, the necessary groundwork for them to join Philadelphia’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. On Saturday, they did the same thing with two more young prospects.

Philadelphia signed a former 15th pick, Sekou Doumbouya, and undrafted guard, Aminu Mohammed, and waived them. Doumbouya has NBA experience with the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers. Mohammed was on Philadelphia’s summer league team.

Doumbouya has career averages of 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds and Mohammed averaged 13.7 points and 8.2 rebounds as a freshman at Georgetown. Both look to make an impact with the Blue Coats and eventually earn another shot in the NBA.

Lakers re-sign Sekou Doumbouya to two-way contract; Jay Huff waived

The Los Angeles Lakers made two roster moves Wednesday regarding the two-way spots.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday Sekou Doumbouya has been re-signed to a two-way contract.

In order to make room for Doumbouya’s arrival, the Lakers are waiving Jay Huff.

Doumbouya was with L.A. on a two-way contract earlier in the season, but he was waived after dealing with an injury. The former No. 15 overall pick in 2019 now has another opportunity with the Lakers. He made two appearances during his first stint and had a 10-point game on 4-of-4 shooting against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Huff, a 7-foot-1 floor-spacing center, made four appearances during his run, which last came on Dec. 23. He averaged 1.0 rebounds, 0.2 assists and 0.2 steals in 5.0 minutes per game.

The other Laker currently on a two-way deal is Mason Jones, who has appeared in two games since starting with the franchise on Dec. 21.

Lakers waiving Sekou Doumbouya; Chaundee Brown signed to two-way deal

The Los Angeles Lakers announced two roster moves Tuesday involving the team’s two-way spots.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced Tuesday Sekou Doumbouya’s two-way contract has been waived.

Los Angeles initially signed the 6-foot-8 forward towards the start of the regular season after waiving Joel Ayayi, the previous holder of one of two two-way spots.

Doumbouya, a former first-round pick in 2019, is currently rehabbing a foot injury, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

He appeared in two games this season, most notably dropping 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in the blowout loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Lakers will replace Doumbouya with Chaundee Brown. Brown signed with the team on an Exhibit 10 deal after going undrafted in 2021, and he impressed on both ends of the floor during Summer League and the preseason before being waived prior to the start of the regular season.

Brown then moved to the South Bay Lakers and was key in the team’s opening night win against the G League Ignite.

Jay Huff, a 7-foot-1 floor-spacing center, is the other two-way player.

Full South Bay Lakers G League 2021-22 roster tracker

The South Bay Lakers of the G League announced its 2021-22 training camp roster. See who is on the team.

The start of the 2021-22 NBA season also signals the G League is beginning soon.

The Los Angeles Lakers‘ G League affiliate is the South Bay Lakers, which plays its home games at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo, California.

South Bay’s schedule doesn’t start until Nov. 5, but the team, head coached by recently promoted Miles Simon, announced the training camp roster for the new season.

South Bay is where the two-way players on the Lakers’ full 17-man roster spend the majority of their time, so Sekou Doumbouya and Jay Huff are two of the prominent names.

Here’s the full roster tracker for the 14 players:

Lakers nearing two-way deal with former first-round pick Sekou Doumbouya

The former No. 15 overall pick in 2019 is likely joining the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-way deal.

The Los Angeles Lakers are progressing to sign Sekou Doumbouya on a two-way deal, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The Detroit Pistons drafted Doumbouya, a 6-foot-8 forward, with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 draft, but it’s been a rocky ride for the youngster since then.

Through two seasons with Detroit, he averaged 5.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 17.3 minutes while shooting 38.4% overall on 5.5 attempts and 25.4% from deep on 2.3 attempts.

Detroit dealt Doumbouya this summer to the Brooklyn Nets for DeAndre Jordan, which led to Jordan’s buyout with the Pistons. Then Jordan signed with the Lakers.

But the Nets didn’t keep Doumbouya for long. Brooklyn rerouted him to the Houston Rockets, but the Rockets waived him upon arrival.

Head coach Frank Vogel said the team would consider players currently on the roster and league-wide availability for the second two-way spot available.

Vogel said Chaundee Brown was making a case, but it looks like the Lakers see more upside in the 20-year-old Doumbouya.

Doumbouya will spend more time developing with the South Bay Lakers of the G League, but his size could be useful to the main roster given Trevor Ariza’s injury and the general lack of players of his frame on the roster.

Rockets waive Khyri Thomas to finalize trade for Brooklyn draft pick

By waiving Khyri Thomas to make room for Brooklyn’s Sekou Doumbouya, the Rockets will receive an unprotected 2024 second-round draft pick.

The Houston Rockets have finalized their reported trade agreement with Brooklyn, which nets them a 2024 second-round draft pick in exchange for paying the 2021-22 salary ($3.6 million) of Sekou Doumbouya. The third-year forward is being accepted via a trade exception.

Doumbouya is not sticking around with the Rockets, who reportedly plan to waive him. But since Houston currently has a full roster, they had to open up a roster spot to formally execute the trade — and they did so by waiving guard Khyri Thomas, who is on a non-guaranteed contract.

Since Doumbouya will be waived shortly, the Rockets could potentially re-sign Thomas to the vacated roster spot at that time. However, other NBA teams will have a chance to claim Thomas off waivers in the interim (though many would have to open up a roster spot to do so).

A 6-foot-3 guard, Thomas averaged 16.4 points and 5.0 assists in five games with Houston late last season. Though he played most of the year in the G League “bubble,” the 25-year-old was suddenly forced into big minutes for the Rockets due to a historic wave of injuries. But in 2021-22, Houston’s backcourt depth appears to be much more substantial, and Thomas did not appear to have a clear path to minutes.

Nets trade Sekou Doumbouya, 2024 second-round draft pick to Rockets

In a salary dump by Brooklyn, the Rockets will pay Sekou Doumbouya’s 2021-22 salary and receive a 2024 second-round draft pick for doing so. Houston will waive Doumbouya after the trade.

In an apparent bid to lower team payroll, the Brooklyn Nets are trading third-year forward Sekou Doumbouya to the Houston Rockets, along with an unprotected second-round draft pick in 2024. The development was first reported Tuesday by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

However, the Rockets — who do not currently have an open roster spot — do not have any plans for Doumbouya, themselves. Per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the Rockets will waive the 20-year-old before he plays a single game for them. Houston is using a trade exception to absorb Doumbouya’s contract, allowing owner Tilman Fertitta and general manager Rafael Stone to effectively buy a future draft asset.

A 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward, Doumbouya was the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft. In two professional seasons, he has averaged 5.6 points (38.4% FG) and 2.8 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game.

Now 20 years old, Doumbouya will earn $3.6 million for the 2021-22 season. His contract does not have a further financial commitment.

Bruce Brown is excited to play with Sekou Doumbouya again

Bruce Brown opens up on what he is looking forward to this season.

It seems like the Brooklyn Nets are becoming a designated stop for  ex-Detroit Pistons players. After acquiring Blake Griffin and Bruce Brown last season, now Brooklyn will also have the services of Sekou Doumbouya. The Pistons drafted the Guinea native in 2019 and it was then when he became teammates with Griffin and Brown.

In an interview with Anthony Puccio of the Association, Brown did not hold back his excitement on playing with Doumbouya again:

“We’re friends, so we talk from time to time. Ya know, that’s my dawg. I’m excited for him to be here. He’s still finding his way, so the Nets are the perfect place to learn. He’ll have a chance to learn multiple roles and learn from the best.”

Brown also touched on why he decided to return to the Nets even though analysts projected him to receive offers around $12M. The Boston native pointed out that one of the reasons were to compete for a championship, and that was something he did not want to miss out on:

“We had unfinished business. I wasn’t gonna miss that opportunity.”

Report: Brooklyn Nets waive Jahlil Okafor

The Brooklyn Nets are parting ways with Jahlil Okafor..

After acquiring Sekou Doumbouya and Jahlil Okafor via trade from the Detroit Pistons, the Nets are now waiving Okafor. The 25-year-old big man is bound to get interest from various teams as a free agent, but it seemed like in Brooklyn a role could not be carved out for the Arizona native. Last season in Detroit, he averaged 5.4 PPG and 2.4 RPG in 12.9 MPG.

When playing for the Nets in 2017, Okafor was given an opportunity to prove himself to the organization. In that season, the young big man went for 6.4 PPG along with 2.9 RPG. The stint was short lived though because a year later he joined the New Orleans Pelicans. It’s only a matter of time before another team in the league scoops him in the coming days.

Report: Brooklyn Nets trade DeAndre Jordan, four draft picks to Pistons

The Brooklyn Nets are trading DeAndre Jordan to the Pistons.

The Brooklyn Nets have reportedly traded center DeAndre Jordan, four second-round picks and cash to the Detroit Pistons for Jahlil Okafor and Sekou Doumbouya, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Nets are sending their own picks in 2022 and 2027 as well as a 2024 second from the Wizards and a 2025 second from the Warriors, according to Wojnarowski. They will also include $5.78 million in cash.

This move saves the Nets $47 million in salary and tax, according to Wojnarowski. Jordan is owed just over $9.8 million in each of the next two seasons. The Pistons are planning to work out a buyout with the big man, allowing him to be a free agent.

Wojnarowski is also reporting that the Los Angeles Lakers would be a “serious contender” for Jordan should the Pistons buy him out.

The Nets are planning to waive Alize Johnson as well, according to Wojnarowski.

The Nets are inheriting about $5.7 million between Doumbouya and Okafor. Doumbouya is entering the third year of his rookie-scale contract after being drafted No. 15 overall in the 2019 draft out of France. The Nets can pick up his fourth-year option of about $5.5 million for next season if they want.

Doumbouya has not been overly productive in his first two seasons in the NBA, averaging 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. His shooting numbers do not jump off the page either, hitting 37.9% overall and 22.6% from beyond the arc last season.

Okafor entered the league as an exciting prospect in 2015 but has largely flamed out after averaging nearly 18 points per game his rookie season. He has spent time with four different organizations through six seasons, including a stint in Brooklyn in 2017-18.
