Notre Dame finds ‘23 running back replacement in West coast star

The Irish upgrade at running back

Just under a week ago, Florida running back [autotag]Sedrick Irvin Jr.[/autotag] decided that Notre Dame was not the place for him, decommitting from the Irish. Maybe Irvin Jr. knew what was to come for the 2023 recruiting class.

Today, Irvin Jr.’s “replacement” was found in Washington running back [autotag]Jayden Limar[/autotag]. The five-foot-eleven-inch and 185-pounder verbally committed to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and the Irish this evening on CBS Sports HQ. He ultimately chose the Irish over Arizona, Michigan and Oregon. Limar is viewed as a better prospect than Irvin Jr. and with rumors of the Irish making waves for another Floridian, [autotag]Richard Young[/autotag], there probably weren’t enough carries for all of them in South Bend.

Back to the good news, as the Irish are getting someone who many view as a high-level running back. Limar’s offer list shows that as he held verbal offers from USC, Texas A&M, and others.

The commitment from Limar is the thirteenth verbal in the 2023 recruiting class. Many view the class that [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has assembled as one of the best, if not the best, at this current moment of the cycle.

Michigan State could get the 2023 class started with a familiar name.

Four-star running back Sedrick Irvin Jr. will announce his commitment next week on Sept. 22. Irvin Jr. — son of Spartans legend Sedrick Irvin — is rated as No. 8 running back and No. 177 overall prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2023 class.

Irvin Jr. has long been considered a top target for the Spartans and is currently projected to follow in his dad’s footsteps by playing in East Lansing. However, the Spartans will need to beat out a ton of big-time programs for his talents.

Irvin Jr. currently holds scholarship offers from 28 programs, including the likes of Florida State, Notre Dame, Stanford, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon.

Michigan State currently has no commits for the 2023 class so hopefully, they’ll get that class started with a huge get in Irvin Jr. We’ll know by this time next week.

MSU picks up two crystal ball predictions for 4-Star 2023 RB Sedrick Irvin Jr.

Irvin, who is listed at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 8 running back and No. 92 overall prospect in 2023 class

Older Spartan fans remember Sedrick Irvin tearing it up for Michigan State in the late ’90s, and if all goes as a few recruiting analysts are forecasting we could be seeing his son doing the same in a few years.

Michigan State has picked up a pair of crystal ball predictions for 4-star and top 100 2023 running back prospect Sedrick Irvin Jr. from 247Sports recruiting analysts Allen Trieu and Sean Scherer. Irvin, who is the son of former MSU legend Sedrick Irvin, was handed an offer from the Spartans back in August and would be a huge get for Mel Tucker if he eventually picks to play his college ball in East Lansing.

While a pair of analysts currently pegs Michigan State to land Irvin, he is refuting those claims. Irvin, who plays at Gulliver Prep in the Miami area, took to Twitter on Friday to say he’s going to “enjoy the recruiting process” before issuing any kind of top schools list or commit.

Irvin, who is listed at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 8 running back and No. 92 overall prospect in the 2023 class. As you can expect, Irvin has already received numerous scholarship offers from premier programs across the country, including Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State and Tennessee.

So what can we make of these early crystal ball predictions? Well, Trieu is normally spot on with his predictions — nearly 95% accurate all-time — so you have to think there’s a reason why he likes Michigan State to land Irvin. Not to mention his father’s ties to the program could lead to an inside track for Irvin. But we also need to keep in mind that it’s still extremely early in the recruiting process, and Irvin has made it clear he’s in no rush to commit. Mix in the fact that it’s only a matter of time before even more programs come calling for his talents so there will only be more and more competition for MSU.

So with that being said, it’s nice to see MSU getting the early nod on Irvin but don’t get too excited as there’s still a long way to go in this recruiting battle. It should be really interesting to see how it all plays out in the next two years.
