Should Seahawks have drafted an offensive lineman in the 2nd round?

Following Seattle’s pick of D’Wayne Eskridge, pundits are asking if the Seahawks should have drafted an offensive lineman in the 2nd round?

The Seattle Seahawks used their first pick of the 2021 NFL draft – No. 56 overall in the second round – to beef up their wide receiving corps and hopefully land themselves a solid No. 3 option behind Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf.

But some seem to be questioning Seattle’s selection of D’Wayne Eskridge out of Western Michigan not so much for what he lacks himself as a player, but more for what position group the Seahawks made their target.

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire actually gave the Seahawks a C-minus grade for the Eskridge pick. Nate Davis of USA TODAY wrote the following regarding Seattle’s selection.

“Welcome to the draft, Seattle, which gave up its first-rounder in the Jamal Adams deal … and that’s OK given the Seahawks’ spotty record in Round 1 lately,” Davis starts. “Eskridge brings more athleticism to the passing game with his blazing speed, averaging 23.4 yards per catch over the past two seasons. At 5-9, 190 pounds, he’s more Tyler Lockett than DK Metcalf. “Still, what about that offensive line, fellas?”

What about the offensive line? Surely the Seahawks’ acquisition of guard Gabe Jackson this offseason isn’t their only solution to Russell Wilson’s woes . . .

Seattle has just two more draft picks to work with this year – one in the fourth round at No. 129 and one in the seventh at No. 250 overall.

The action kicks off Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. PT.

D’Wayne Eskridge was hoping he would be drafted by Seahawks

Wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge out of Western Michigan was hoping he would be drafted by the Seattle Seahawks and his wish came true.

“It’s already been written..” Western Michigan wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge tweeted just minutes after he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft at No. 56 overall.

He was hoping he would be drafted by the Seahawks and his wish came true.

“I’m hoping I go to the Seahawks out of every team in the league I feel most comfortable with them,” he wrote in a screen-shotted text he included with the tweet.

“Just feel good about them overall, know they gone take care of me and especially with your cousin there.”

Eskridge is expected to address the media via Zoom later this evening, so check back often for the latest, breaking news.

Draft Wire gives Seahawks a C-minus grade for D’Wayne Eskridge pick

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire gives the Seattle Seahawks a C-minus grade for their selection of WR D’Wayne Eskridge in the second round.

The Seattle Seahawks surprised a few folks when they opted not to trade back in the second round, instead, adding a speedy wide receiver from Western Michigan, D’Wayne Eskridge.

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire isn’t instantly a fan of the pick, giving Seattle a barely-passing grade of C minus.

“Helping Russell Wilson is the right idea, but the Seahawks needed offensive line help far more than another pass-catcher,” Easterling writes. “There were multiple blockers worthy of this pick, and instead, the Seahawks reach past a couple of more valuable receivers for an undersized sleeper in Eskridge, who had a strong week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Corner was a bigger need, too.”

Perhaps snagging a wide receiver wasn’t the biggest need for Seattle, but the Seahawks do draft for the best possible player and perhaps see what they need from the young receiver . . . another weapon in QB Wilson’s pocket.

Be sure and tune in this evening when coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider are expected to give their thoughts on the second day of the 2021 NFL draft.

With no picks in the first round this year, the Seattle Seahawks had to wait an entire day to cast their first selection in the 2021 NFL draft.

At No. 56 overall, the Seahawks have selected Western Michigan wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge.

The Seahawks entered the draft with just three total selections this year so Seattle is next scheduled to pick in the fourth round at No. 129 overall and in the seventh round at No. 250, barring any trades.

Seahawks select Creed Humphrey at No. 56 in Touchdown Wire mock

Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire has the Seattle Seahawks selecting center Creed Humphrey at No. 56 in his second-round 2021 NFL mock draft.

The start of the second day of the 2021 NFL draft is just hours away and Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire has now put the finishing touches on his second-round mock draft.

While he has a number of trades sprinkled throughout the night, Schofield has the Seahawks staying put and pulling the trigger on center Creed Humphrey from Oklahoma to beef up Seattle’s offensive line.

“The Seattle Seahawks have just three picks in the 2021 NFL draft, and have a few needs including EDGE and cornerback,” Schofield starts. “While they cannot fill all of those holes with just one pick, they address a bit one, adding center Creed Humphrey from Oklahoma.

“Humphrey is experienced and powerful, and gives Pete Carroll and company a solid option in the interior on day one.”

The pick would not only be beneficial to Carroll and crew but would also put a smile on quarterback Russell Wilson’s face, knowing he has a little extra protection heading into the season.

All the action kicks off at 4:00 p.m. PT and be sure and follow along with Seahawks Wire as we keep you updated on all the latest news!

Saints Wire staff bold predictions for Day 2 of 2021 NFL draft

The New Orleans Saints showed that fans should be ready for anything on Day 1 of the 2021 NFL draft, setting up our Day 2 bold predictions.

The New Orleans Saints showed that their fans should be ready for anything on Day 1 of the 2021 NFL draft, selecting Houston edge rusher Payton Turner in a surprise move at No. 28. That kind of raises the bar for our Day 2 bold predictions. So the Saints Wire staffers huddled up again and called our shot for what the Saints may do on Friday night, during rounds two and three:

2021 NFL draft: All of Saints’ current picks on Day 2

The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to make three selections on the second day of the 2021 NFL draft, where they once picked Alvin Kamara.

[mm-video type=video id=01f4ge9td3dde52q2v32 playlist_id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f4ge9td3dde52q2v32/01f4ge9td3dde52q2v32-f097768b41ab36ffaaab68da8eda487b.jpg]

The second day of the 2021 NFL draft is upon us, with the selections in rounds two and three set to begin in prime time on Friday night. But where are the New Orleans Saints slated to pick? And could they navigate the board by trading their picks? After spending their first round pick on Houston edge rusher Payton Turner, their top needs endure at cornerback, linebacker, and receiver.

Right now, the Saints are scheduled to make their only selection in the second round at No. 60 overall. After that, they’ll have to wait until the end of the third round, where New Orleans acquired a pair of compensatory draft picks at Nos. 98 and 105. However, the Saints lack their own third rounder after trading it last year to move up and select Zack Baun.

If the Saints do start calling teams to see about trading up again, they have plenty of bargaining chips with extra draft picks in rounds four, six, and seven (twice), plus a full compliment of selections in 2022. Few teams are more aggressive in the trading market than the Saints, so keep an eye out for movement.

We’ll see how it shakes out. There are plenty of quality players still available at positions of need, and New Orleans has had a lot of success in rounds two and three since Jeff Ireland was hired to build their draft board and run the scouting department. Look for a potential trade to acquire a coveted prospect like the Saints have done recently with Baun, Erik McCoy, and Alvin Kamara.
