SEC Basketball: Standings experience shakeup following SEC-Big 12 Challenge

The Big 12 took care of the SEC by winning seven games over the league’s programs on Saturday. How much shake-up did the SEC experience?

It may be a great thing that the SEC-Big 12 Challenge is coming to a close, especially for SEC programs.

The Big 12 won seven of the ten games in the final event last Saturday, some by convincing margins.

The biggest upset of the weekend was Oklahoma’s thrashing of No. 2 Alabama, 93-69. Two Sooners’ scored 25 or more points in the game, led by Grant Sheffield’s 30-point effort followed by Jalen Hill’s 26-point game.

Mississippi State also earned an upset win by taking down No. 11 TCU, 81-74. The Bulldogs needed overtime to pull off the victory, but got much-needed production from Tolu Smith, who scored  27 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

In the event’s only ranked-vs-ranked matchup, Rick Barnes got the best of his former squad as No. 4 Tennessee defeated No. 11 Texas, 82-71 in Knoxville. Oliver Nkhamhoua and Zakai Zeigler each scored 20 points for the Volunteers, dropping 27 and 22 points respectively.

How did the SEC’s performance in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge affect the current standings? Here’s a look at where your favorite SEC team ranks ahead of this week’s action.

Tigers of the Game: Williams, Broome earn honors for effort in West Virginia game

Williams and Broome were vital to Auburn’s second-half comeback attempt in Saturday’s loss to West Virginia.

For the first time this season, Auburn Basketball has become victim to a two-game losing streak.

Auburn’s strong second half could not erase a 16-point lead that West Virginia built in the first half was too much to overcome, as the Tigers fell to the Mountaineers in the opening game of the SEC-Big 12 Challenge, 80-77.

Auburn shot 49.2% from the field in the loss, but four Tigers would end the game with double-digits in the points column. For the fourth time this season, Jaylin Williams led the team in scoring, while Johni Broome had a special second half. Allen Flanigan reached double-figures in the first half, while K.D. Johnson crossed the threshold late in the game.

With so many options, choosing a Tiger of the Game provided a challenge. Here’s a look at which player Auburn Wire writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells, as well as Auburn fans, chose as their Tiger of the Game following Auburn’s loss to West Virginia.

Vols defeat Texas in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

Tennessee avenges last year’s loss to the Longhorns.

No. 4 Tennessee (18-3, 7-1 SEC) defeated No. 10 Texas (17-4, 6-2 Big 12), 82-71, in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge Saturday before a sellout crowd at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Vols avenged last year’s 52-51 loss at Texas in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Olivier Nkamhoua recorded a career-high 27 points to lead Tennessee. He totaled eight rebounds and three assists for the Vols, who opened a 40-28 lead by halftime.

Sophomore guard Zakai Zeigler recorded 22 points, 10 assists and three rebounds for the Vols.

Josiah-Jordan James totaled 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Santiago Vescovi recorded 12 points and eight rebounds for Tennessee.

The Vols outrebounded Texas, 38-23, in the game.

Jabari Rice scored a season-high 23 points to lead Texas. Brock Cunningham and Marcus Carr scored 11 points each for the Longhorns. Carr was held scoreless in the first half.

Instant Analysis: Tigers’ comeback effort falls short in second-straight loss

Auburn outscored West Virginia by 13 in the second half, but the Mountaineers 16-point halftime lead was too much to overcome.

The first game of the 2023 SEC-Big 12 Challenge did not start off as an entertaining contest, but would ultimately turn into an edge-of-your-seat affair.

The No. 16 Auburn Tigers shot 56% from the field in the second half, and outscored West Virginia 48-35 in the final 20 minutes, but the Mountaineers’ 16-point halftime deficit, as well as a rough game at the free throw stripe were not enough to steal the win, as they fell to West Virginia, 80-77 in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

After trailing by a large margin in the first half, Auburn would cut West Virginia’s lead to one point three different times over the final five minutes of the game, but never took the lead. In the late stages of the game, Auburn’s poor shooting output at the free-throw line throughout the game caught up with them. Auburn ended the game by succeeding on just 6-of-19 shots from the stripe, while West Virginia converted 21-of-25.

West Virginia dominated the first half as they took a 45-29 lead into halftime. As a team, Auburn shot 40.7% in the first half while the Mountaineers connected on 56% of its shots. West Virginia also out-rebounded Auburn, 17-12, and went 3-of-7 from three-point range. West Virginia’s Erik Stevenson scored 18 of his 31 points in the first half, none of his teammates would score more than eight points during the stretch.

Auburn’s key contributors were rather quiet in the first half. [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], the team’s leading scorer, failed to score a point in the first half, going 0-3 from the field. [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] shot 1-5 from the field and scored just three points in the first 20 minutes. [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] was the team’s leading scorer in the first half with 10 points, followed by [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] with six points.

The Tigers were able to cut into West Virginia’s lead in the second half. With 14:50 remaining in regulation, Green connected on a free throw that put Auburn within nine points of the Mountaineers, 55-46. Over the next seven minutes, Auburn worked their way up to a three-point deficit, then Broome cut the Mountaineers’ lead to one point with 5:16 remaining in the half.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Broome ended the day with 15 points, which was second behind Williams’ 18-point game. Flanigan and [autotag]K.D. Johnson[/autotag] also reached double-figures in the loss, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively.

Auburn gets a rematch with Georgia for its’  next game. The Tigers and Bulldogs will square off on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 6 P.M. CT inside Neville Arena. Last time out, the Bulldogs defeated Auburn, 76-64 in Athens on Jan. 4.

Ranking this season’s SEC-Big 12 Challenge slate

Which matchups are you excited to watch on Saturday?

One of College Basketball’s premier events is back for the 2023 season.

The 2023 edition of the SEC-Big 12 Challenge will be the final installment, as the SEC is planning to transition to an all-new ACC-SEC Challenge that is set to begin during the 2023-24 season. The end of the deal is primarily due to ESPN ending the contract, and in small part due to Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC in 2025.

The final SEC-Big 12 Challenge will feature several intriguing matchups against evenly-matched teams. The series will kick off with Auburn traveling to West Virginia for an 11 a.m. CT tipoff and will end with a marquee matchup between two of College Basketball’s winningest programs, Kansas and Kentucky.

Which matchups are you most excited to watch? Auburn Wire has broken down all ten games and has ranked them from what we feel is least watchable, to the most exciting.

Florida basketball learns of SEC/Big 12 Challenge opponent

The Oklahoma loss sent Florida basketball into a funk last season. Here’s who the Gators will face in the 2022-23 season’s SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Florida basketball will take on Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas, on January 28 of the upcoming season as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

The matchup was announced on Thursday as were the rest of the matchups that make up the interconference challenge. The Gators have fared well since the series began going 6-3 against the Big 12 over the last decade. Florida knocked off Oklahoma State at home last season and beat No. 11 West Virginia on the road in 2020-21.

Things are different this year, though. [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] has taken over for [autotag]Mike White[/autotag], who is now the lead man in Athens, Georgia. Golden is relatively unproven and is looking to rebuild what once was a proud dynasty in Gainesville. The good news is Kansas State is also dealing with a first-year head coach, so both teams should have an equal amount of time to figure things out under the new regime before facing each other.

The two teams have only faced off twice, once in 2010 and again in 2012. In the first matchup, Florida took down then-ranked No. 6 Kansas State on neutral ground at the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise. The Wildcats returned the favor by upsetting 8th-ranked Florida two seasons later in Kansas City at the Sprint Center (now the T-Mobile Center).

Here are all of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchups:

Florida at Kansas State
Alabama at Oklahoma
Arkansas at Baylor
Auburn at West Virginia
Kansas at Kentucky
Texas Tech at LSU
Ole Miss at Oklahoma State
TCU at Mississippi State
Iowa State at Missouri
Texas at Tennessee

All games will air on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
