SEC football quarterback rankings following Week 1

Where Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck ranks among SEC quarterbacks following his Week 1 performance against Clemson

The first week of college football is finished, and we are looking forward to Week 2. UGA Wire already did its own SEC football power rankings. Now, we rank the quarterbacks for those SEC teams.

Week 1 offered several contrasting matchups. Many SEC teams played weak or Football Championship Subdivision teams. Some played ranked teams. Here’s how every quarterback stacks up statistically ahead of Week 2.

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

1. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss (418 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INTs, 272.6 Passer Rating vs. Furman)

Dart lived up to his namesake this week, throwing darts all over the field and leading Ole Miss to a 76-0 win. The Rebels have a relatively easy schedule for a while; their first SEC opponent is Kentucky in Week 5.

2. Payton Thorne, Auburn (322 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs, 253.6 Passer Rating vs. Alabama A&M)

Not many people expected to see Payton Thorne here, but he balled out on Saturday. Once again, it was against an FCS team, and Auburn doesn’t get an SEC opponent until Week 4 against Arkansas.

3. Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee (314 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 208.1 Passer Rating vs. Chattanooga)

Same ordeal as the first two. Iamaleava had an excellent performance against an FCS team. However, the Vols play No. 24 NC State next week, so don’t be shocked if Iamaleava sinks a bit.

4. Blake Shapen, Mississippi State (247 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 228.2 Passer Rating vs. Eastern Kentucky)

I put Iamaleava over Shapen due to having more passing yards, but Shapen was ultraefficient in his 21 attempts.

5.  Jalen Milroe, Alabama (200 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 374.5 Passer Rating vs. Western Kentucky)

His insanely high passer rating is due to throwing nine times. It feels crazy putting him this high despite the volume, but he also had two touchdowns running, giving him five total on the day.

6. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt (190 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 216.0 Passer Rating at Virginia Tech)

Pavia’s passing stat line looks just OK, but combine that with his 104 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing, and you see how Vanderbilt was able to look like an actual SEC team for once.

7. Taylen Green, Arkansas (229 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 181.9 Passer Rating vs. Arkansas Pine Bluff)

Taylen Green goes above Ewers because of his 88 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing.

8. Quinn Ewers, Texas (260 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INTs, 184.2 Passer Rating vs. Colorado State)

9. Carson Beck, Georgia (278 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 160.5 Passer Rating vs. No. 14 Clemson)

It speaks to how dominant Georgia was that Carson Beck wasn’t jaw-dropping and still orchestrated an efficient performance in a 31-point blowout.

10. Brock Vandagriff, Kentucky (169 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INTs, 189.4 Passer Rating vs. Southern Miss)

If not for the game being cut short due to lightning, Vandagriff would be higher on this list. He was on pace to pass for 225 yards and four TDs.

11. Jackson Arnold, Oklahoma (141 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs, 168.2 Passer Rating vs. Temple)

Arnold had four touchdowns but only throwing for 141 yards on 25 attempts dings him a bit. He had a ton of short fields to work with as his defense forced six turnovers.

12. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU (304 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 155.6 Passer Rating vs. No. 23 USC)

Nussmeier’s debut as LSU’s signal-caller was mixed. He didn’t do enough to lose the game, but certainly not enough to win either. It was evident as they lost to USC on a last-second rushing score.

13. Brady Cook, Missouri (218 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 135.4 Passer Rating vs. Murray State)

Brady Cook had a mediocre day against Murray State, but he isn’t the biggest reason Missouri is No. 11.

14. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina (114 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, 85.1 Passer Rating vs. Ole Dominion)

Now we get to quarterbacks who were actively bad. It’s rare a team barely wins against an FCS team, but South Carolina did just that against Old Dominion, and it was mostly thanks to Sellers playing terribly.

15. Graham Mertz, Florida (91 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 83.2 Passer Rating vs. No. 19 Miami)

Mertz had an awful day. He had this stat line and he even suffered a concussion. Florida’s season is on life support, especially if he misses time or keeps playing terribly.

16. Conner Weigman, Texas A&M (100 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 54.7 Passer Rating vs. No. 7 Notre Dame)

Weigman’s stat line seems almost unfathomable, but what might be more unbelievable is that despite his awfulness, Texas A&M still had a chance to win late against Notre Dame. A truly terrible performance, and if he can’t rebound, Texas A&M is in trouble.

SEC quarterback rankings ahead of 2024 spring football

Where does Jackson Arnold rank among SEC quarterbacks heading into spring ball?

As the SEC expands to 16 teams in 2024, the conference is stacked at the quarterback position. From former five-star prospects to 2024 Heisman contenders to intriguing transfer additions, there will be some fantastic quarterback play on display this fall in the SEC.

Seven of the last nine Heisman winners have come from Oklahoma and the SEC. Two of those seven were non-quarterbacks, DeVonta Smith and Derrick Henry.

Much of what will determine which teams emerge as SEC title and College Football Playoff contenders will be on the shoulders of the quarterbacks who will lead their team in 2024.

There are some quarterback competitions that need to take place, but here’s our pre-spring ball SEC quarterback rankings.

Ranking SEC quarterbacks by QBR after Week 3: Carson Beck in the middle

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck climbs up a few slots in the SEC QBR rankings

Many teams in the SEC are still seeking consistent quarterback play after Week 3. The conference is off to an uneven start, and quarterback play is a big reason. The SEC lost Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Hendon Hooker and Stetson Bennett to the 2023 NFL draft.

The SEC will have some excellent conference games in Week 4 of the college football season. Alabama plays at Ole Miss, LSU hosts Arkansas and Auburn travels to Texas A&M. SEC quarterbacks will have another chance to prove themselves against a high level of competition.

ESPN’s Total QBR rating takes into account numerous factors, including the strength of the opponent. ESPN defines QBR as the “Adjusted Total Quarterback Rating, which values the quarterback on all play types on a 0-100 scale adjusted for the strength of opposing defenses faced.”

The SEC is off to a rough start to the 2023 college football season. Both LSU and Alabama have loses before Week 3. When was the last time that happened?

So far, the conference is 3-6 against Power Five opponents. A big reason the SEC may be in for a down year is quarterback play. The conference lost Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Hendon Hooker and Stetson Bennett to the 2023 NFL draft.

We think Carson Beck could be in for a monster year

The Georgia Bulldogs are looking to win a third straight national championship. However, it won’t be easy because the Dawgs have some uncertainty at the quarterback position.

Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff is expected to start for the Bulldogs. Both Beck and Vandagriff have not started any games in their college career, but both have a lot of familiarity with Georgia’s offensive scheme.

Whoever starts for Georgia will have an elite supporting cast and will be in a great situation. The starter should be in a position to put up great numbers.

Georgia’s favorable schedule will give Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff time to adapt to the starting role. Georgia avoids having to play the top projected teams in the SEC West. Additionally, the Bulldogs open the season with four straight home games against Tennessee-Martin, Ball State, South Carolina, and UAB.

SEC Mike considers Carson Beck, who is the projected starter, to be the SEC’s No. 8 quarterback ahead of the 2023 football season. He ranks Beck behind quarterbacks like Kentucky’s Devin Leary and Tennessee’s Joe Milton.

Georgia’s offensive line play should allow Carson Beck, who is not the most mobile of quarterbacks, to play to his strengths and work primarily from the pocket. Combine that with Georgia’s running game, defense, and elite receiving targets like Brock Bowers and Arian Smith and the Bulldogs will rarely put Beck in a tough situation.

SEC Mike thinks that Carson Beck could be ranked as the conference’s top quarterback by the end of the season. If Beck can avoid turnovers, then he should have a big year.

Carson Beck practices against one of the best defenses in the country every week. Saturdays will often be easier for him than in practice. Additionally, Beck looked pretty sharp in Georgia’s spring game.

Overall, Carson Beck’s talent and previous solid performances makes us think that he will end the year as a top five quarterback in the SEC.

Georgia’s Carson Beck ranked in lowest tier of SEC QBs

We think Carson Beck should be ranked much higher than as the No. 12 quarterback in the SEC

The Stetson Bennett era is over in Athens, Georgia. The Georgia Bulldogs are looking to win a third consecutive national championship. Either Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff is expected to start for the Bulldogs.

College Sports Wire has Carson Beck ranked as the No. 12 quarterback in the SEC. Here’s what College Sports Wire has to say about Georgia’s projected starting quarterback:

Beck has waited three years for his opportunity to start for the Georgia Bulldogs. He looked great in mop up duty over his 10 games in the last two seasons. Beck is inexperienced but he showed why he was a highly-touted four-star prospect out of Florida in the 2020 recruiting class.

Yes, Carson Beck has not started any games in his career, but he has a lot of familiarity with Georgia’s offensive system. At a minimum, Beck (or Vandagriff) is a top 10 quarterback in the SEC.

Whoever starts for Georgia will have an excellent supporting cast and will be in a great situation. Ultimately, it is tough to separate a quarterback from the talent around them. Whoever Georgia starts at quarterback will put up great numbers.

At the very least, Carson Beck deserves the benefit of the doubt over a player like Alabama’s Tyler Buchner. Buchner, a Notre Dame transfer, failed to defeat Marshall in a ugly loss last season.

Georgia’s offensive line allowed Stetson Bennett to be sacked only nine times last year. The offensive line play at Georgia will allow Carson Beck, who is not the most mobile of quarterbacks, to play to his strengths and work primarily from the pocket. Combine that with Georgia’s running game, defense, and pair of All-SEC receiving targets and the Bulldogs will rarely put Beck or Vandagriff in a tough situation.

Carson Beck’s situation will ultimately help him resemble a player more similar to the 2022 version of Stetson Bennett than a bottom tier SEC quarterback.

Georgia’s schedule is another factor that will help either Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff adapt to the starting role. Georgia avoids having to play LSU, Alabama, or Texas A&M from the SEC West. The Bulldogs open the season with four straight home games against Tennessee Martin, Ball State, South Carolina, and UAB.

Carson Beck practices against one of the best defenses in the country every week. Saturdays will often be easier for him than in practice. Additionally, Beck looked pretty sharp in Georgia’s spring game.

Overall, Carson Beck’s talent and previous solid performances make it much more likely that he will end the season as a top five quarterback in the SEC than a bottom five quarterback.

Currently only two SEC quarterbacks have higher Heisman odds than Carson Beck.

So, just how good is KJ Jefferson, anyway? Five reasons why he’s better than ever

KJ Jefferson has given Arkansas two potential Heisman Trophy dark horses with his play in 2022.

Technically, Arkansas football and its fans have had four different years of KJ Jefferson to look at it on the field. Thankfully for the program and its faithful, they get almost two whole years more.

Jefferson made a name for himself last year in throwing for more 2,700 yards with 21 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. His most impressive trait, though, was his running ability as he took off 146 times for a team-high 664 yards with six touchdowns.

To the surprise of no one, it’s been much of the same so far this year. Arkansas is a perfect 3-0, too, heading into the Hogs’ first major test of the year on Saturday: the Southwest Classic against Texas A&M in Week 4.

Jefferson set a career-high in passing in the Hogs’ Week 3 win against Missouri State, going 19 of 31 for 385 yards and two touchdowns. He’s been just as good this year as he was last.

But how good is that? Let’s take a look.

SEC QB rankings at regular season’s end: Kyle Trask just means more

Ranking the SEC quarterbacks at the end of the 2020 regular seasons with two Heisman finalists leading the way.

(This post was originally published by Crissy Froyd on LSU Tigers Wire.)

An unprecedented 2020 college football season has finally reached its end in the SEC, and we’ve seen plenty of surprises and shuffling around at quarterback this year.

One of the biggest storylines of the year has been the competition between Florida’s Kyle Trask and Alabama’s Mac Jones vying for the Heisman Trophy.

But it looks as if the honors might not go to a quarterback at all anymore (enter DeVonta Smith, who is coming off a performance with 15 receptions, 189 yards and two touchdowns).

Here’s a look at where each quarterback in the conference stands at regular season’s end.

SEC QB Rankings, Week 13: How close are Mac Jones and Kyle Trask in the Heisman race?

We’re finally nearing the defining moment — the SEC Championship Game between the Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The race for the Heisman Trophy couldn’t be much closer between Kyle Trask and Mac Jones, and how each of them perform in the showdown should give us our final answer on who deserves the honors most (although Devonta Smith, who many know to be a cheat code, is also a good option outside of a quarterback).

In addition to that, here’s a look into how each of the conference’s quarterbacks stack up ahead of Saturday:

1. Kyle Trask, Florida.

You can’t define a player by one game, and a large part of what went awry for Florida. That can be largely placed on the defense and… who throws a shoe, honestly?

Trask finished the night completing 29-of-47 passes for 474 yards with two touchdowns and the two interceptions. He also had a pair of rushing touchdowns.

There were a handful of forced throws and obviously having turnovers within a final stat line isn’t desirable, but one of the turnovers came on a deflection, making it not entirely has fault.

Trask continued to etch his name into the Gators’ history books, surpassing Danny Wuerffel’s single-season touchdown record, setting a new one of 40 on the season.

Where do each of the SEC’s quarterbacks stand ahead of Saturday’s slate of games?

Here’s a look at where each SEC quarterback ranks heading into another week of college football.

It’s been a rocky week for SEC football, and many of the conference’s quarterbacks won’t see action with all of the postponements of games that were originally scheduled for Saturday.

This weekend will be a rather empty one, with only the following matchups remaining:

Vanderbilt at Kentucky: 12 p.m., SEC Network

Arkansas at Florida: 7 p.m., ESPN

South Carolina at Ole Miss: 7:30 p.m., SEC Network

Here’s a look at where each SEC quarterback ranks heading into another week of college football.
