The Mariners’ circle dance they do when they win is the best celebration

This dance after wins is the best.

It’s possible that the Seattle Mariners are the most fun MLB team out there as we hit August.

They just made a huge trade for pitcher Luis Castillo, one that already paid off on Wednesday with an eight-strikeout performance in a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees.

And after wins like that one, they’re doing a dance that’s the best celebration in baseball right now.

The outfielders get in a circle and dance. The infielders do it too! It’s a complete delight, and I need to share it with you too, in case you haven’t seen these guys dancing like they were at my wedding nearly two decades ago:

The Astros had a brilliant answer to the Mariners hitting Jose Altuve on the first pitch

Now, THAT is how you respond.

Earlier this season, the Seattle Mariners were involved in the biggest baseball brawl we’ve seen in years. And on Sunday, they were fortunate to avoid a similar scene in Houston.

Mariners All-Star rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day Injured List after he was hit on the right hand by a pitch mid-swing in Saturday’s game. Though X-rays were negative and the pitch clearly wasn’t intentional, the Mariners didn’t exactly take a subtle approach to retribution in Sunday’s game.

With George Kirby on the mound for Seattle, Astros star Jose Altuve was hit up high with a 95 mph fastball on the very first pitch Houston saw in the game.

Altuve went down for a few seconds before returning to his feet, nodding that he was OK. It certainly appeared to be retaliation for Rodriguez’s injury, and Yuli Gurriel avoided a high-and-tight pitch the following at-bat.

The game easily could have gotten out of hand at that point, but the Astros instead used the free baserunner to their advantage. Later in the inning, Altuve would score on a perfectly executed double steal of home.

MLB fans had plenty of thoughts on the whole sequence as well.

Luis Castillo trade grades: Who won the Mariners and Reds deal?

Handing out some grades for the Luis Castillo deal.

Cross one of the top arms on the trade market off the list.

Luis Castillo, whom many thought was going to be dealt by the struggling and rebuilding Cincinnati Reds, was sent to the surprising Seattle Mariners, who were scorching hot entering the All-Star break and who are for sure Wild Card contenders.

The price, though, was quite a haul of prospects for the Reds, exactly the kind of move they needed to make.

As usual, we’re grading the big trades as the Aug. 2 MLB trade deadline approaches, so let’s dive in with this deal and hand out some grades to both sides:

Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez switched his bat before a big three-run blast because it needed a nap

Julio Rodriguez changed up his bat ahead of this big knock and it paid off!

Julio Rodriguez understands the importance of beauty sleep.

In Rodriguez’s second game back from injury after the All-Star break, the 21-year-old rookie made quite the impact for the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. During the Mariners’ day game against the Texas Rangers, things were looking grim for the home team down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

With two men on, however, Rodriguez took Jon Gray deep with this three-run rocket to put the Mariners on top 4-2 for the game-winning tally. Since Rodriguez returned from injury earlier in the week, the outfielder has hit two huge home runs for his team in clutch spots.

What a blast! In the Mariners postgame interviews, Seattle manager Scott Servais said Rodriguez swapped out his bat ahead of clobbering home that three-run knock. The reasoning? Because… the bat was sleeping.

As he’s standing there ready to go up for that at bat, before that he says ‘I had to switch bats.’ I said ‘ah, you got a new one?’. He said ‘yeah the other one’s sleeping; it’s a day game he’s not ready to go.’ He took a new bat up there and hit a three-run homer. That’s Julio Rodriguez.

And what do you know, Rodriguez was right! Considering the Mariners have won their last 15 games that Rodriguez has played, his bats can take all the naps they want to.

4 things that would be fun to see in MLB’s second half, including the Yankees choking

Lots of baseball fans would love to see this happen.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The All-Star break was a lot of fun but now it’s over and it’s time for teams and fanbases to get ready for what should be a frantic final few months of the season followed up by what could be a very juicy postseason.

So while we get ready for baseball to get back in action later today (there are six games on this fine Thursday) let’s take a look at four things that would be fun to see happen.

1. The Baltimore Orioles making the playoffs.

The O’s have been awful in recent years. Like, really, really, really bad. They’ve had over 100 losses in three of the last four seasons (the shortened 2020 season was they only year they didn’t have 100 in that stretch), including last year when they dropped 110 games. That’s a lot of losing.

Well, the Orioles are 46-46 at the All-Star break, which is basically like 20 games over .500 for them, and had a 10-game winning streak earlier this month. They’re still 3/2 games back in the wild-card race but with three wild-card teams getting in this year there is a shot they could get there. It’s a long shot, sure, but it would be fun to see them in contention for a spot in the postseason.

2. The Seattle Mariners making the playoffs and winning a playoff series.

Just like the Orioles, the Mariners have grown used to losing lots of games over the years. That changed a bit last season when they finished 90-72 but still missed the playoffs. Right now they’re the hottest team in baseball thanks to their current 14-game winning streak and sit in second place in the AL West.

The Mariners haven’t been in the playoffs since 2001 when they lost to the Yankees in the ALCS so they and their fans are hungry for this playoff push. But forget about just getting in the playoffs, I think it would be fun as you-know-what to have them win a playoff series and get things rocking up in the Pacific Northwest.

3. Aaron Judge hitting 60 home runs.

Speaking of 2001, that was the last time we saw someone hit 60 or more home runs in a season (Barry Bonds had 73, Sammy Sosa had 64). Well, Judge has 33 homers so far and is on pace to break the 60-home run barrier. Nobody in the AL has hit over 60 dingers since Roger Maris in 1961. Home runs are fun. Home run chases are fun. This should be a fun few months for Judge and the Yankees.

4. The Yankees break the regular-season win record, then lose in the playoffs.

The Yankees are the best team in baseball with 64 wins and 28 losses at the break. They are on pace to beat the record for most wins a season (116) that’s held by the 2001 Mariners and 1906 Cubs. And let’s be honest – nobody is going to be able to stop the Yankees from breaking that record this year.

But… someone will stop them from winning their first World Series since 2009 and that team will be the Houston Astros. Yankees fans would be crushed if that happened. The rest of baseball fans would probably find it kind of funny. OK, they’d find it really funny.

Ken Griffey Jr. snapping photos of Julio Rodriguez at the Home Run Derby became an instant meme

So many Ken Griffey Jr. memes!

Julio Rodriguez had one very notable fan and Seattle Mariners legend following his incredible performance in the 2022 Home Run Derby Monday night: Ken Griffey Jr.

Griffey — known for his own Derby prowess — had a huge, professional-looking camera he was using to snap shots, and of course that became an instant meme, with a lot of people comparing him to a proud dad watching his kid play.

It didn’t matter that Rodriguez lost in the finals to Juan Soto. The 21-year-old is in the midst of an incredible season and his performance Monday night was worth snapping.

Let’s get to the memes:

Breakdown of Mariners-Angels brawl showed Andrew Wantz telling Jesse Winker he had to hit him

“You had to hit me?!”

MLB handed down suspensions for Sunday’s bench-clearing brawl between the Angels and Mariners this week, and Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker was the hardest-hit player with 7 games.

But after seeing all the videos and context for the brawl, it’s awfully easy to come away thinking that Angels pitcher Andrew Wantz’s three-game suspension was too lenient. He seemed to admit he hit Winker on purpose.

The whole ordeal stemmed from the Angels taking issue with how the Mariners pitched to Mike Trout on Saturday. Trout avoided two high-and-tight pitches — after a meeting at the mound — with one coming close to his face. Trout wasn’t hit, but the Angels were determined to send a message on Sunday.

An excellent breakdown of the brawl from Jomboy Media showed Wantz evidently admitting to Winker that he “had to” hit him with the pitch. The exchange took place around the 9:40 mark. (NSFW language, video plays in separate YouTube tab)

As the fight was starting to settle down, Winker and Wantz came face to face. And Wantz, who wanted to apologize, appeared to tell Winker that he had to hit him. Winker responded, “You had to hit me? Why did you need to hit me?”

Winker and the rest of the Mariners were adamant that the Angels overreacted since they never actually hit Trout with a pitch. So, the response of throwing behind Julio Rodriguez and then hitting Winker was taking the whole situation too far.

The full breakdown was definitely worth a watch. MLB fans also had thoughts on the video.

The Mariners-Angels brawl looked even more intense from a fan’s close-up video

What a view!

Major League Baseball is almost certainly going to dive into all the available video from Sunday’s bench-clearing brawl between the Angels and Mariners as the league evaluates possible suspensions. But leave it to a fan to capture the best view of the fight.

By now, you probably heard about what happened on Sunday. The Angels were upset about high-and-tight pitches to Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani on Saturday. So, in Sunday’s game, pitcher Andrew Wantz threw behind Julio Rodriguez, was allowed to stay in the game and then hit Jesse Winker the next inning.

After getting hit, Winker charged to the Angels dugout, and that was when this fan got the best view of a legit BASEBRAWL.

Like, whoa.

Winker especially was going at it with multiple punches at Anthony Rendon. Justin Upton — a former Angels player! — took a hard fall right at the start. There’s a lot to unpack there.

But hey, MLB fans did appreciate this new angle of the fight.
