Chris Carson is a double-edged sword for the Seahawks this season

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson has been a double-edged sword for the team this season with high production but multiple fumbles.

Chris Carson has been a bit of a double-edged sword for the Seattle Seahawks this season. The third-year running back out of Oklahoma State has rushed for 853 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games in 2019, while chipping in 189 receiving yards for two additional scores.

However, he already has a career-high six fumbles on the season doubling his previous career-high in 2018. This could become a real concern moving forward despite Seattle’s 8-2 record.

The Seahawks may be a high-ranking team in the NFC right now, but they have had to fight for almost every one of their victories. Carson has contributed greatly to the team’s success and is their best running back by a country mile, but his ball security issues are still noticeable.

Coach Pete Carroll repeatedly preaches protecting the football, something the Seahawks were not able to do in their narrow overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. Carson had a fumble himself, but he also provided 101 total yards and a touchdown in the matchup.

Carson’s issues began early, when he fumbled in each of the first three games of the season. After that, Carson did not fumble in his next five outings. He then proceeded to fumble twice against Tampa Bay in a contest Seattle escaped by the skin of its teeth with a win.

Carson has been one of the most important players on the Seahawks’ roster and is crucial to their offensive success. His positive contributions far outweigh the negative, but he must continue to work on his ball security to help his team win even more, especially with the tough schedule the Seahawks have over the final six weeks of the regular season.

Josh Gordon had only 2 catches in Seahawks debut but both were crucial

New Seahawks wide receiver Josh Gordon only registered two catches in the team’s win over the San Francisco 49ers, but both were crucial.

Josh Gordon made crucial contributions in his first game as a Seattle Seahawk on Monday night, despite his stat line showing only two catches for 27 yards. Both of those catches were vital plays in the game against the San Francisco 49ers and offered a glimpse of what the Seahawks and their fans can expect from him moving forward.

Russell Wilson credited Gordon for making the most of his opportunities and helping the team achieve their most important victory of the season.

“Josh Gordon has been a great addition to our team,” Wilson told reporters after the win. “We have a lot of great receivers and a lot of guys who can catch the football and make plays. He made some huge, huge catches today on third downs. He had the one slant to the right and I think another on the left. Just some of the plays he was making with confidence on big third downs to continue drives. He was great. He had a great week. It’s great to have him on our football team.”

Gordon had a reception for 13 yards on third-and-6 that preceded Jason Myers’ 46-yard field goal that gave Seattle a 24-21 lead. His other catch was for 14 yards and a first down in overtime.

While Gordon did not receive many opportunities, he has already displayed a propensity for coming through in the clutch. This could be just what Seattle needs at wide receiver with Tyler Lockett’s status up in the air for Week 12 against the Eagles when the team comes off their bye week.

Sitting at 8-2 with a tough schedule ahead of them, the Seahawks could use more contributions from Gordon down the stretch.

49ers take small dip in power rankings after stumble vs. Seahawks

The 49ers’ fall from the top of the NFL Wire power rankings wasn’t bad after they suffered their first loss of the year.

The 49ers were a 47-yard field goal away from beating the Seahawks on Monday night and maintaining an undefeated record. Instead, Chase McLaughlin’s kick hooked wide left (and then some), and the 49ers eventually lost to the Seahawks. The loss was enough to drop San Francisco one spot to No. 2 in the NFL Wire power rankings.

It’s not a surprise the 49ers finally dropped out of the top spot in Doug Farrar’s rankings. He’s had them there since they downed the Rams 20-7 in Week 6. Baltimore also had a dominant win over the Patriots, followed by a dominant win over the Bengals. There’s not a team playing better football than the Ravens going into Week 11.

The key for San Francisco is not letting losses pile up. Monday night was a heartbreaker, but a game they could have (should have?) won even without their two best pass catchers, George Kittle and Emmanuel Sanders.

Farrar explained why the loss isn’t as bad as it seemed:

San Francisco’s drop from the undefeated isn’t that big a deal in the grand scheme of things — they lost to a very good team playing at its best (especially on defense) and did so seriously shorthanded. Kyle Shanahan’s team will try to get things back together against the Cardinals next week.

This is where things get more tough for the 49ers though. They face Arizona in Week 11, Green Bay (No. 5 in the rankings) in Week 12, and then Baltimore (No. 1) and New Orleans (No. 4) in back-to-back road games. Then they’re home for the Rams and Falcons before wrapping up the season in Seattle (No. 6).

With injuries piling up and the schedule getting tougher, it’s going to be an uphill climb for the 49ers to keep themselves ranked among the team’s elite.  However, they’ll have ample opportunities to prove themselves worthy, and if things go right the rest of the way, they’ll have a real claim to be the NFL’s best team at the end of the 2019 season.

Can’t win them all: Studs and duds from 49ers 1st loss of 2019

Monday night was an incredible football game between two rival teams with plenty ramifications for later in the season.

Monday night was an incredible football game between two rival teams with plenty ramifications for later in the season. Unfortunately, the 49ers came up on the short end and suffered their first loss of the year at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers came in with several key injuries and had several more during the game that hindered the team, but they still had plenty of chances to keep their undefeated season alive.

There was a lot to unpack following the 27-24 overtime loss that dropped the 49ers to 8-1. Here are the studs and duds from a back-and-forth Monday night contest:

Dud: QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

With all the circumstances around the game tonight, Garoppolo had a chance to put himself in the top tier of quarterbacks. Without tight end George Kittle entering the game, and losing wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders during the . contest, made things hard on the quarterback, but he could have taken the opportunity to step up and make plays. He unfortunately couldn’t do it.

There were too many mistakes from him Monday night, including several bad throws and two costly fumbles that led to two Seattle touchdowns. His 66.2 passer rating Monday night was the third-lowest number for Garoppolo as a 49er. Tonight shouldn’t call into question about Garoppolo’s viability as a starting quarterback, but it could lead to questions about his ceiling.

The NFL announced changes to the 2019 regular season schedule on Tuesday. For the time being, none of them involve the Dallas Cowboys’ final slate of seven games. Nothing will change for the Week 11 schedule, but Week 12 is going to flip a couple of important, NFC matchups between the various time slots.

Those contests of course, are being moved around the ratings bonanza that will fall upon CBS when the Cowboys travel up north to take on the current AFC leaders in the New England Patriots. The league is swapping Green Bay against San Francisco along with Seattle against Philadelphia.

The Cowboys game will occupy the national, late afternoon start and kickoff at 3:25 p.m. central, as planned. The Fox network had the Packers and 49ers squaring off in a local coverage game, but Kyle Shanahan has his club at 8-1, and they warrant more national exposure. Aaron Rodgers vs Jimmy Garoppolo is now the Sunday night contest on .

To round out the moves, Russell Wilson’s Seahawks will now kick off at what would be 10 am in their local time zone, as they and Doug Pederson’s Eagles will now host Seattle at noon central.

In addition to these changes, the league has announced their Week 16 slate of Saturday games the weekend before the holidays.

The Houston Texans will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on 12/21 at noon central. That will be followed by the Buffalo Bills visiting the New England Patriots at 3:30 p.m., then the Los Angeles Rams will take on the 49ers at 7:15 p.m.

All of the Saturday games will be broadcast on the NFL Network.

There can certainly be more changes in the coming weeks, as the league continues to try and get the best contest to the most eyeballs.  On could even involve the Cowboys and Eagles’ Week 16 contest potentially getting the Sunday night treatment.

NFL Official Rules On Schedule Changes

Flexible Scheduling

Allows teams to play their way onto the Sunday night schedule

In 2006 the NFL implemented a primetime “flexible scheduling” element on Sundays in Weeks 10-15 and in Week 17. In 2014 that was extended so that games between Weeks 5 and 17 could be affected by flex scheduling. However, only two games may be flexed into Sunday Night between Week 5 and 10.

Flexible scheduling ensured quality matchups on Sunday night in those weeks and gave surprise teams a chance to play their way onto primetime. The NBC Sunday night time slot for “flex” weeks lists the game tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.

Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game will be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights.

Just as the six major college football conferences have done for many years, the NFL has the flexibility to move the start times of games on Sundays, using a 12-day notice format.

For example, a game scheduled for a Sunday could move from a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff to an 8:15 p.m. start, but the change would be made and announced no later than the prior Tuesday, 12 days prior. Sunday afternoon games, as in the past, can still be moved between 1:00 and 4:05 or 4:25 p.m. ET.

In Week 17, in order to ensure a Sunday night game with playoff implications, the decision to move the start time may be made on six days notice.

NFL Flexible Scheduling 101

  • Begins Sunday of Week 5
  • In effect during Weeks 5-17
  • Up to 2 games may be flexed into Sunday Night between Weeks 5-10
  • Only Sunday afternoon games are subject to being moved into the Sunday night window.
  • The game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night during flex weeks will be listed at 8:15 p.m. ET.
  • The majority of games on Sundays will be listed at 1:00 p.m. ET during flex weeks except for games played in Pacific or Mountain Time zones which will be listed at 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET.
  • No impact on Thursday, Saturday or Monday night games.
  • The NFL will decide (after consultation with CBS, FOX, NBC) and announce as early as possible the game being played at 8:15 p.m. ET. The announcement will come no later than 12 days prior to the game. The NFL may also announce games moving to 4:05 p.m. ET and 4:25 p.m. ET.
  • Week 17 start time changes could be decided on 6 days notice to ensure a game with playoff implications.
  • The NBC Sunday night time slot in “flex” weeks will list the game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.
  • Fans and ticket holders must be aware that NFL games in flex weeks are subject to change 12 days in advance (6 days in Week 17) and should plan accordingly.
  • NFL schedules all games.
  • Teams will be informed as soon as they are no longer under consideration or eligible for a move to Sunday night.

49ers vs. Seahawks: 3 things that stood out in the 3rd quarter

The 49ers will have some work to do in the fourth quarter after Jimmy Garoppolo turned the ball over twice in the third quarter.

The 49ers will have some work to do in the fourth quarter after Jimmy Garoppolo turned the ball over twice in the third quarter. Seattle was able to capitalize on both turnovers, and turned both into touchdowns and a 21-10 lead.

Here’s what stood out in the third quarter.

Another forced fumble for the defense

After ending Seattle’s final drive of the first half with a fumble, the 49ers did it once again on Seattle’s opening drive of the second half. The Seahawks were moving the ball well against the San Francisco defense for the first time, but K’waun Williams punched the ball out of Rashaad Penny’s hands and DeForest Buckner picked it up. Seattle has started to move the ball against the 49ers defense, but the turnovers have now slowed Seattle twice.

49ers can’t take advantage of the takeaway

The offense had a huge chance to take control of the game following the fumble recovery, but couldn’t take advantage. They got into a decent spot with a fourth-and-2 in plus territory, but Jimmy Garoppolo overthrew Deebo Samuel for a turnover on downs. The offense hasn’t done much all night, and put a lot of pressure on the defense.

Off of Bourne’s hands, into Diggs’ and Seattle leads

Turnovers have played a huge role in the game, and Jimmy Garoppolo’s second interception of the contest led to Seattle taking the lead. On first-and-10, Garoppolo threw a pass that was high, intended for Kendrick Bourne, that Bourne could have caught, but it tipped off his fingers into the hands of Quandre Diggs who returned the ball to the 49ers 16-yard-line. The play proved costly as Seattle took the turnover and turned it into points with a touchdown to take their first lead.

49ers vs. Seahawks: 3 things that stood out in the 2nd quarter

One mistake from Jimmy Garoppolo turned the tide of the game and the 49ers hold onto a three point lead at the half.

The final three minutes of the first half featured several swings, and when the dust settled the 49ers lead 10-7 at intermission. Seattle took momentum with a scoop-and-score from Jadeveon Clowney on a Jimmy Garoppolo fumble that provided the only scoring for the Seahawks. Seattle looked to take the lead, but a huge strip from Jaquiski Tartt ended that hope.

It’s a one-possession game with 30 minutes left. Here’s what stood out in the second quarter:

Warner’s first sack is a big one

Seattle’s offense was threatening to score for the first time with a third-and-4 inside 49ers territory when Fred Warner collected the first sack of his career. Mike Iupati left a hole wide open for Warner to not just bring up a fourth down, but knock Seattle out of field goal range.

Garoppolo’s athletic throw and Bourne’s moves lead to a first down

The 49ers faced a third-and-8 at their own 29-yard-line when Jadeveon Clowney wasted little time getting past Joe Staley to Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo quickly got rid of the ball to Kendrick Bourne four yards short of the marker, but Bourne made a few moves and got the first down to continue the drive. The series would only last three more plays until the 49ers had to punt.

Tartt’s takeaway changes tide

The Seahawks had all the momentum following a defensive touchdown and were driving the ball late in the quarter. Wilson hit DK Metcalfm who turned up field and powered through several would-be tacklers until Jaquiski Tartt stripped the ball prior forcing the turnover at the two-yard-line. The drive ended Seattle’s late push to take the lead before the half, and may have given the 49ers the momentum back.

49ers vs. Seahawks: 3 things that stood out in the 1st quarter

The 49ers dominated the opening 15 minutes opening up with a 10-0 lead.

The 49ers dominated the first 15 minutes Monday night, opening up a 10-0 lead. The offense held the ball for 10:55 in the first quarter and held Seattle’s offense to just six plays.

Everything looked good to start. Here’s what stood out in the first quarter:

Too close of a call

The first drive appeared to end abruptly when Jimmy Garoppolo was intercepted by Shaquill Griffin, but Jamar Taylor was called for holding while Garoppolo still had the ball to wipe out the pick. The call was huge for the 49ers offense to allow them to hold on to the ball and continue the drive. Garoppolo was shaky on the opening series, completing three-of-seven passes.

Another bail out from Seattle

Three plays after the near interception, Garoppolo and the offense faced  a third-and-6 at the Seattle 45-yard-line when Garoppolo hit Emmanuel Sanders short of the first down marker. It would have given the 49ers an interesting fourth-and-short situation but Trey Flowers was called for pass interference to prolong the drive. The drive resulted in a 43-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin to give the 49ers an early 3-0.

First defensive drive couldn’t have gone better

The 49ers defense spared little time making an impact against MVP candidate Russell Wilson, forcing Seattle to go three-and-out on their opening drive. The series was shut down on a third-and-2 when DJ Jones blew through center Joey Hunt to get to Wilson before the quarterback had a chance to even think.

The 49ers offense followed Seattle’s opening drive with a seven-play, 83-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown.

Josh Gordon appreciates Seahawks culture, playing for Russell Wilson

The Seattle Seahawks’ new wide receiver Josh Gordon expressed an appreciation for the team’s culture and playing for Russell Wilson.

The Seattle Seahawks claimed wide receiver Josh Gordon off waivers after being cut by the New England Patriots and he is very satisfied to be with his new team in the Emerald City.

“I’m just grateful to be here,” Gordon said following Saturday’s practice. “I’m grateful to be here. There’s a lot of gratitude. Definitely thankful to land in a spot like this. Could’ve been anywhere, I couldn’t control that. Nonetheless, I’m grateful to have this opportunity to just go out there and do what I do.

“It has been great. It’s been a smooth transition. A great environment, a great football team, and organization. I’m really happy to be here.”

Gordon expressed his appreciation for the culture in the Seahawks’ locker room from the players to the coaches.

“The energy is high energy, all the time, everybody,” he said. “Top to bottom, all across the board. Offense and defense, staff. I love it. Keeps everybody kind of moving, everybody’s on their toes and in the right frame of mind to come in and do what you have to do and just perform, work, and compete.”

Gordon stated he and Russell Wilson discussed playing together for years, and he is looking forward to finally making it happen.

“Me and Russ have been talking about (playing together) for a long time, for a while behind the scenes – how nice it would be,” Gordon said. “Admire his game. I think maybe he respected mine mutually. I love the way he plays, it’s as simple as that. He’s a great ballplayer, he can make it happen from pretty much anywhere.”

Wilson offered words of praise for his new wide receiver after team practice this week.

“Josh, he’s been great since he’s gotten here,” Wilson told reporters on Friday. “He’s been studying like crazy. He sits up (front) and takes tons of notes. He’s highlighting like crazy. He’s in his playbook nonstop. He’s prepared. He’ll be prepared and ready to roll. He’s a true pro. He’s been in different systems and stuff like that. I think that helps him. I think he’s really fired up to be here. We’re fired up to have him.”

Fans hope Gordon can contribute to Seattle’s ambitions as they head into a brutal stretch of schedule through the second half of the season.

Prediction

Seahawks 23, 49ers 21

Moneyline (?)

The Seahawks are one of the best teams in the league and this is a game ripe for an upset. As good as the 49ers have been this year, they showed a few flaws against Arizona last week against dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray.

Russell Wilson is having an MVP season and will lift the Seahawks to victory. Bet SEATTLE to win straight up with the moneyline (+220).

Against the Spread (?)

If we’re picking the Seahawks to win straight up, you bet we’re taking them with the points, too. Seattle is a 6.5-point underdog in Week 10, which is a huge spread for a divisional matchup – even if San Francisco is at home.

Happily take the points and take the SEAHAWKS (-110) to cover the 6.5-point margin. They’re 13-3 ATS in their last 16 against the 49ers.

Over/Under (?)

The Over/Under is a tough pick this week, since the total is just 46.5 points. The Seahawks offense can go on a tear at any moment thanks to Wilson, but San Francisco’s defense is dominant.

This should be a fairly low-scoring affair with both teams managing the clock. Bet the UNDER (-110) Monday night.
